The weather may have con-
tributed to a fatal accident in the
township last week, as a 79-year-
old Riverside resident swerved off
of Route 73 North on Tuesday,
Nov. 29 at 3:40 p.m., crashing into
a lake on the side of the road, Eve-
sham police said.
Maria Santos, 79, was pro-
nounced dead after being trans-
ported to Virtua Hospital in Marl-
ton.
The vehicle flew 30-feet off the
roadway and crashed into the
lake in front of the Marlton Prom-
enade, Lt. Walt Miller said. Arriv-
ing police officers found that the
vehicle left the roadway and
launched into the lake located on
the southwestern corner of the
Promenade Shopping Center, 500
Route 73 South, Marlton. The ve-
hicle was completely submerged
under water and witnesses re-
ported that Santos was still inside
of the vehicle.
Members of the Evesham Po-
lice and Fire Departments en-
tered the water and removed San-
tos from the vehicle. The occu-
pant was transported to Virtua
Hospital in Marlton. At the hospi-
tal Santos was pronounced dead.
Police representatives have prop-
erly notified the surviving mem-
bers of the Santos family.
The investigation into the
crash is ongoing; however, it ap-
pears that the vehicle was travel-
ing on Route 73 northbound prior
to driving off of the roadway into
the lake, Miller said.
No police personnel were in-
jured during the rescue efforts.

The township might be insti-
tuting a new insurance program
that could potentially reduce
costs.
Representatives are reporting
that the township will explore a
new self-funded insurance pro-
gram to help cut down on medical
insurance premium costs.
Township Manager Tom Cz-
erniecki said the council would
look closely at the new plan and
see if the change would benefit its
employees, while also cutting
down on costs as Evesham Town-
ship moves into the future.
If the program were initiated,
the township would take all of the
money that it currently pays for
health insurance premiums and
put it into a large employee pool.
The township will hire a third
party company to manage the
pool of insurance premium
money, Czerniecki said.
The way the program would
work, Czerniecki said, is that an
employee would put in a claim for
health care, and it would be taken
out of the employee pool.
An employee would submit a
claim and it would paid out of the
budget that would otherwise go to
health insurance premiums.
Thats a very simple way of look-
ing at this, Czerniecki said. We
would buy umbrella policies and
lets say your individual costs ex-
ceed a certain dollar amount, the
policy would kick in.
The township would cover the
insurance premium costs until
the employee reaches a certain

An autopsy was performed re-
cently at the Burlington County
Medical Examiners Office,
Miller said.
In other police department
news:
A suspect from Philadelphia
was arrested on Nov. 29 at approx-
imately 12:20 a.m. Police are in-
vestigating the suspects connec-
tion with a recent rash of tire
thefts in Evesham Township, ac-
cording to representatives.
The Evesham Police Depart-
ment attempted to conduct a
motor vehicle stop on Route 73,
Marlton.
The suspect vehicle accelerated
and refused to pull over.
The officer pursued the vehi-
cle, which had been reported
stolen in Philadelphia. The pur-
suit ended when the vehicle
crashed into a tree on North
Maple Avenue at Oak Avenue,
Marlton. The suspect then fled
the vehicle on foot into the Ar-
rowhead Development.
Police searched the area for the
suspect. The suspect was located
and arrested without further inci-
dent. The suspect was identified
as a 40-year-old male from the
2100 block of Franklin Street,
Philadelphia.
The suspect was charged with
eluding police, receiving stolen
property and possession of bur-
glary tools.
He was committed to the
Burlington County Jail in default
of $50,000 bail.
No one was injured during this
pursuit.
Police are investigating to de-
termine if the suspect was in-
volved in a recent rash of tire
thefts from vehicles in the area.

threshold, Czerniecki said, then
the insurance policy would begin
for the employee. Its basically as
if the township is creating its
own insurance company, he said.
The savings would be a slow-
down of growth in that line item.
I think the metric you would use
is seeing the current growth of
our state benefit plan. It increases
every single year, same with
every other plan, but this plan
would possibly grow at a slower
rate, he said.
This is not the first change the
township has looked at for its in-
surance costs this year. In July,
the members of the Evesham
Township Council agreed to have
all township employees pay be-
tween 20 and 30 percent of their
health benefit costs, starting on
Jan. 1.
The township will require em-
ployees in the states family
health insurance plan to pay 30
percent approximately $432 a
month of their health care pre-
miums. An employee in the single
plus plan will pay 20 percent or
$114 a month of their health-
care premiums.
Currently, employees only pay
1.5 percent of their gross salary to
their health-care plan.
The measure will save the
township $350,000 on an annual
basis. Back in July the township
said it would look to see if mov-
ing into a private health care
provider would make more sense
for the municipality and offer ad-
ditional savings for township tax-
payers.

Parker McCay shareholder and
co-chair of the Administrative,
State and Local Government De-
partment, John C. Gillespie, was
the 2011 recipient of the Michael
Pane Award. The award is given
by the Pane family, the New Jer-
sey State League of Municipali-
ties, and the New Jersey Institute
of Local Government Attorneys.
It honors a municipal profession-
al who practices with the highest
ethical standards and whose
work has significantly enhanced
the integrity of local govern-
ment. Gillespie received the
award on Nov. 17, at the New Jer-
sey State League of Municipali-
ties Convention in Atlantic City.
Gillespie is a resident of Marl-
ton. He currently serves as solici-
tor to Evesham Township, as well
as other municipalities. He is also
one of the trustees of St. Isaac
Jogues Roman Catholic Church
in Evesham.
The award is given in honor of
Michael Pane, Sr., who was long-
time editor of the Municipal Law
Review, president and trustee of
the New Jersey Institute of Mu-
nicipal Attorneys, and counsel to
the New Jersey Association of
Municipal Clerks and the League
of Municipalities, among many
other distinguished titles.
I am humbled to be recog-
nized with this award. I knew
Michael Pane and considered him
a colleague. He was a brilliant
man who upheld the highest
ideals of our profession. To re-
ceive this honor is particularly re-
warding, said Gillespie.
Gillespie is involved in all
areas of municipal law, including
governmental defense litigation,
land use and development. Dur-
ing his 30-year career, Gillespie
has represented numerous local
government entities on a wide
range of issues.
His experience in municipal
law allows him to advocate for his
clients and provide skilled legal
representation on the difficult
practical issues that face local
government.
He is a trustee of the New Jer-
sey Institute of Local Govern-
ment Attorneys (NJILGA) and
serves as associate counsel to the
New Jersey State League of Mu-
nicipalities. In 2010, Gillespie re-
ceived the Fred G. Stickel Memo-
rial Award, the highest award
given by the NJILGA, which hon-
ors a member of the New Jersey
bar who demonstrates excellence
in the field of public sector law.
He was also among the first-ever
recipients of the International
Municipal Lawyers Association
Amicus Service Award, which
recognizes lawyers who have
done exemplary work to protect

A
cross the country, cities and
school districts are in need of
additional revenue sources. In
New Jersey, and elsewhere, some gov-
erning bodies have turned to selling
advertising space on public property.
The results: Mixed.
The Associated Press recently re-
ported that the response to Bank of
America ads stretched across the
Wabash Avenue Bridge in Chicago has
drawn the publics ire probably not
doing BOA or the city any good.
But the same report cited a school
district in Colorado that now includes
ads on report cards. Parents, it seems,
dont seem to mind at all.
The concept, of course, isnt new.
But, in these challenging times when
taxpayers are demanding breaks and
governing bodies try to maintain re-
spectable levels of services, more and
more are looking at ways to raise addi-
tional funds. And renting out public
space for private advertising is one
way to do just that.
It seems that doing so is a sound
concept so long as the governing
body doesnt go too far.
The AP story quoted experts who
said the bridge ads could be simply
disgusting to the public and viewed by
some as blight. In that instance, no-
body wins.
But, under the right circumstances,
its readily apparent that the public
will accept some form of private ad-
vertising in the public space.
It all comes down to taste. An obnox-
ious sign that simply looks out of
place likely will raise objections. A
less intrusive, and perhaps more rele-
vant, advertising message might be
applauded by the community as a way
to save valuable tax dollars.
Governing bodies should continue
to explore private advertising but be
careful in doing so.
Buy an ad, lower your taxes
But be careful not to cross the line of good taste
Private ads, public spaces
Do you think governing bodies should
explore placing advertisements for
private companies on public proper-
ty?
Gamblers, sculptor, cursive and Obama
Gamblers on self-exclusion list
penalize themselves, casinos
Casinos have seized nearly $70,000 in
jackpots in recent months from gamblers
who signed up for the states self-exclusion
list, the Associated Press said.
Gamblers who signed on to the list asked
the casinos to keep them out and to seize
their winnings if they still managed to
sneak in.
Usually, people sign on because of a
compulsive-gambling problem. The theory
is theyll lose their incentive to gamble if
they cant keep their winnings.

Giannotti sculpting
his place in the arts
If you live in South Jersey, youve proba-
bly seen at least one sculpture by John Gi-
annotti. The Haddonfield resident has
about 24 outdoor sculptures on display
around the world, with several in South
Jersey. Giannotti, originally from New
York City, has lived in Haddonfield for 10
years.
He started teaching at Rutgers Universi-
ty in Camden in 1970 and was head of the
fine arts department. He taught an inter-
national studies program as well. Giannot-
ti started out as a painter. His father was a
sign painter and his workshop was like a
playground for the child.
He still paints, but mostly does sculpture
these days. Giannotti said he is not a
gallery artist, meaning he does not create a
series of works with the same theme. In-
stead, he hops around and works on what-
ever strikes his fancy.

Should schools still
teach cursive?
Should schools even bother teaching
cursive writing anymore? This has become
a hot issue in education, the Gloucester
County Times reported.
New Jersey doesnt seem to require the
practice, and many schools across the state
and country have dropped it from the in-
struction altogether.
The old displays of cursive writing no
longer line the top of a third-grade chalk-
boards.
The penmanship exercises that once
took up blocks of time in elementary
school are now taught at the teachers or
schools discretion, if at all.

The Marlton Sun
If you live in South Jersey,
youve probably seen at least one
sculpture by John Giannotti. The
Haddonfield resident has about
24 outdoor sculptures on display
around the world, with several in
South Jersey. Giannotti, original-
ly from New York City, has lived
in Haddonfield for 10 years.
He started teaching at Rutgers
University in Camden in 1970,
and was head of the fine arts de-
partment. He taught an interna-
tional studies program as well.
Giannotti started out as a
painter. His father was a sign
painter and his workshop was
like a playground for the child.
I started making art at an in-
credibly young age, Giannotti
said.
He still paints, but mostly does
sculpture these days. Giannotti
said he is not a gallery artist,
meaning he does not create a se-
ries of works with the same
theme. Instead, he hops around
and works on whatever strikes
his fancy.
Giannotti said he finds sculp-
ture the most interesting work
possible, and that every new
commission he gets opens an en-
tirely new world for him.
Being a sculptor is similar to
being a features writer for a
newspaper, because you have to
become a mini expert on that
subject in a very short period of
time, he explained.
My work in my studio is
never the same, Giannotti said,
noting if he were in a gallery, he
would be expected to produce a
continuous collection of work. I
just dont find that exciting.
He left Rutgers in 2001 because
he wanted to devote more time to
creating monumental sculp-
tures. However, Giannotti still
does some teaching in Philadel-
phia, Connecticut and New York.
Next spring, he is going back to
Rutgers for an honors course on
the art and architecture of Italy.
In the middle of the semester, he
will take students on a 12-day
trip to Rome, Florence and
Venice. That kind of trip is more
affordable for his students than a
full semester abroad.
Giannotti said most of his out-
door sculptures are in bronze be-
cause of its lasting quality. While
he has carved marble and al-
abaster, he considers himself a
modeler in clay because it allows
for better variety than working
in stone.
And he has no favorite piece,
but is encouraged by the popu-
larity of some of his work with
the public, which is really what
the work is about.
The artist can get pleasure
out of making something and
satisfaction out of doing it well,
but if there is a really good pub-
lic response, then it really be-
comes meaningful, Giannotti
said.
He said the statues that draw the
most positive response are the
Hadrosaur in Haddonfield and
the Matthew Henson statue at
the Maritime Museum in Cam-
den.
Theyve sort of made a place for
themselves, Giannotti said.
The ones that give me the most
pleasure are the ones that have a
story to them, a history to them
and can communicate in some
way with people.
Giannotti said he tries to ex-
press three different communi-
cations with his work.
First, is the communication be-
tween him and the work of art.
Second, is the sculpture commu-
nicating with itself, which is why
he likes to sculpt pieces with
more than one character.
The Henson piece shows a dog,
King, looking up at his master.
And, the work at Sisters of In-
fant Jesus on Kresson Road in
Cherry Hill includes a little girl
looking up at a nun.
And, third, there is the com-
munication between the work of
art and the public.
He said he was more con-

Youre putting up something
brand new in a town that is not
used to such things, Giannotti
said. The reception that it got
was pretty astounding.
He said the dinosaur piece was
made for kids, who love it.
Also, with outdoor pieces, people
dont need a background in art
history to appreciate them, he
said.
Giannotti said the project hes
currently working on may get
the best response ever, because it
is a sculpture of World War II
icon Rosie the Riveter.
The piece, which is half done,
will be installed in Wood-Ridge
(near the Meadowlands in
Bergen County) in January.
Wood-Ridge was home of Curtiss
Wright, airplane-manufacturing
plant in World War II where
many women worked.
Giannotti said NJ Transit
wanted a new sculpture for a
new station and solicited input
from residents and they chose
Rosie the Riveter.
He said he made his first
sculpture in college he had
done mostly painting up until
that point in what he called a
crazy mans studio.
The teacher, at the University
of Buffalo, would rake his fin-
gers over the clay if he didnt
like the sculptures his students
were working on, and tell them
to start over again.
He had some incredible stan-
dards, so I learned a lot from
him, Giannotti said, noting the
medium he used at first was clay.
And, when he works in bronze,
he creates a steel armature skele-
ton and adds mesh for clay.
I try working from life as much
as possible, Giannotti said.
When youre working on a
sculpture, its like working on lit-
erally hundreds of portraits.
Every time you turn a frac-
tion of an inch, you get a differ-
ent profile, he said. You need
lots of information.
Giannotti said his creative
process is almost exactly the op-
posite of what you would think it
is.
He said he thinks of the end-
ing first, and the venue where
the piece will be installed.
When teaching full-time, Gian-
notti had the luxury of being cre-
ative because selling art was not
his main source of income. With
commissions the ideas are given
to him.
When youre operating your
own business which is a cre-
ative business its easy to fall
into a funk, he said. I like to set
schedules for myself.
So which artists does Giannotti
revere?
There are so many artists
who have influenced me that the
list would go on forever, he said,
noting his favorites range from
classical artists to avant garde.
Giannotti, who plays in a jazz
quartet, said eclectic music also
inspires him.
He listens to a diverse group of
musicians such as Handel, Pink
Floyd and Vampire Weekend.
I listen to everything, and it all
has a different effect on me, he
said.
