Human Rights Institute Assistant Part-time/Job share; Weds - Fri HRI Programme Administrator Tuesday 3 January 2012

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: ANTICIPATED START DATE:

PURPOSE OF POSITION: The HRI works to promote and protect the rule of law and the ability of lawyers and judges to practice freely and independently. It does so by sending fact-finding missions worldwide leading to long-term technical assistance programmes in partnership with Bar Associations and Law Societies; sending trial observers; intervening by making representations to authorities worldwide; organising human rights training for lawyers and judges; developing continuing legal education programmes; liaising closely with international and regional human rights organisations, and producing newsletters and other publications. The role of the HRI Assistant is to provide administrative support to the grant funded projects.

Reporting to the HRI Programme Administrator, the HRI Assistants duties include, but are not limited to: Assisting with practical arrangements for training sessions, fact-finding missions, workshops and trial observations; Assisting with travel arrangements, setting up meetings and organising accommodation, per diems, insurance and visa, reconciling credit card payments, keeping within budget; Assisting with the circulation of relevant materials to speakers, workshop participants and delegation members; Maintaining travel logs and updating database; Assisting staff when abroad including responding to emails, assisting Communications administrator during mail outs of country reports and press releases; Dealing with general enquiries on the telephone and by correspondence; Sending of standardised letters/information; General secretarial assistance and filing; Preparation of hand over to other job share HRI Assistant.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE Would suit a graduate or equivalent experience, with some project administration experience in the NGO/charitable sector; should have strong administrative skills with an eye for detail; should have excellent knowledge of Word, e-mail, Excel; some experience of database entry;

should be confident and have a good power of communication with proficiency in written and spoken English; should be flexible and versatile and be able to work well under pressure; should have a readiness to be discreet about sensitive issues; should have an interest in human rights issues. Working knowledge of second language would be an advantage.
