TangerangHospitalHasNewIsolationRoomforAIPatients Tangerang,12December2011 AnisolationroominTangerangHospital,designedtohelpcontainanAvianInfluenzaoutbreak, washandedovertodaytotheMinistryofHealthbyrepresentativesofWHOandtheEU. The World Health Organization (WHO) Representative to Indonesia, Dr Khanchit Limpakarnjanarat, today (12/12) handed over the refurbished isolation room of Tangerang Hospital to the Ministry of Health (MoH), witnessed by Mr Colin Crooks representing the EuropeanUnion(EU).FundedbytheEUandimplementedbyUNOPS(theUnitedNationsOffice forProjectServices),WHOhasalsosupportedthecompletionofsimilarfacilitiesinnineother hospitalsinIndonesia. Thedevelopmentofthesetenisolationroomsispartofacollaborativeprojectfundedbythe EU and implemented by MoH and WHO, called Implementing the National Strategic Plan for Avian Influenza (INSPAI). Within the project period, December 2007 December 2012, ten isolationroomswithnegativepressurehavebeendeveloped.Thistypeofisolationroom,the firsteverinIndonesia,iscrucialinmanaginginfectiouscasesandpreventingtransmission. INSPAI aimed to improve the accessibility and quality of health services for the community, explained Dr Khanchit Limpakarnjanarat, WHO Representative to Indonesia. The technical assistance provided by WHO and other organizations is expected to promote the control of AvianInfluenzaandpandemicpreparednessthroughoutIndonesia. TheEUIndonesiapartnershiponhealthisbasedonasharedcommitmenttoglobalco operationinthefightagainstemerginginfectiousdiseasesandthehardshipstheyinflict,said MrColinCrooks,DeputyHeadofMissionoftheEuropeanUnionDelegationtoIndonesia, BruneiDarussalamandASEAN.Inthiscase,INSPAIwilleventuallyhelpIndonesiatopreventor containapossibleescalatingsituationincontrollingAIandbepreparedforanyeventual pandemic. Astheprojectperiodhasbeencompleted,inadditiontoisolationrooms,INSPAIhasprovided substantialsupporttothecapacitybuildingofhospitalsandlaboratorynetworks.Ithasalso revitalizedtheFieldEpidemiologyTrainingProgramme(FETP)andconductedHealthyFood Marketspilotprojects.Moreactivitiesarestrengtheningriskcommunication,andimproved understandingofH5N1throughresearch.INSPAIhasenabledIndonesiatoknowmoreabout thenatureofAvianInfluenzainIndonesiathroughscientificresearchconductedbyIndonesian researchers.

Understandingthecrucialroleofhumanresourcesinbirdflumeasures,INSPAIhastrained approximately8,000primaryhealthcareworkersfromhighriskprovinces(Yogyakarta,South Sulawesi,NorthSumatera,DKIJakarta,Bengkulu,andWestKalimantan).Around600health workersfromhospitalsacrossIndonesiahaveundergonetraininginInfectionPrevention Control. Additionally,morethan70healthsectorofficialsweresponsoredtostudyepidemiologyinthe UniversityofIndonesiaandtheUniversityofGadjahMadaandalmost200healthmanagers tookfieldepidemiologyshortcourse. TheprojectreferstotheNationalStrategicPlanforControllingAvianInfluenzawhichwas establishedinDecember2005,toeffectivelyrespondtoAvianInfluenza.Theplanwas formulatedbytheMinistryofHealthandtheMinistryofAgricultureandcoordinatedbythe StateMinistryforNationalDevelopmentPlanning.Theplanincludes10strategies.Sevenof themdirectlycoverhumanhealthside. BRIEF INFORMATION ABOUT WHO, EU AND UNOPS

WorldHealthOrganizationinIndonesia TheWorldHealthOrganization(WHO)isaspecializedagencyoftheUnitedNationsproviding global collaboration on health issues.
