PALMER INTSTITUTIONAL DISCRIMINATION Institutional Discrimination At the University of New Mexico, students and faculty members are coming

g out against the University proclaiming there has been unfair treatment and has been going on for years. The institutional discrimination occurring at the University of New Mexico is education/government. African Americans at the school have claimed that there is "rampant discrimination" and "created a culture of discrimination and a racially hostile environment" by failing to promote black employees to administrative positions and salary disparities between black staff and their peers. While equal laws and regulations towards equal opportunities are in place throughout the country and have been since the civil rights movement, the groups also allege that 80 percent of black doctors who left the university's medical school did so because of these conditions and "adverse employment action." For any African American student or even teacher applying to study or teach at this school, an allegation like this will greatly reduce the chances of them applying here. This is a huge deterrent for people and no one in their right mind would apply to a school where they knowingly are open to such discriminations. College is hard enough why would you subject your self to this disadvantage. The University of New Mexico did however release a statement regarding this institutional discrimination towards African Americans: We do not discriminate against African Americans. We do not discriminate against any individual or group based on race, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender or ability. The university has very clear policies in place which prohibit discrimination and we train our employees to comply with the law and our policies.

PALMER INTSTITUTIONAL DISCRIMINATION

The Universities student body is currently made up of only 2.4 % African American Students and almost 20 black teachers are tenured. They may seem like a very small part of the school, yet there are 6500 teachers and 33,000 students. This large school shows how big of a problem this discrimination is. Its not a small school with 5 African American kids, its a large state school that doors are open to anyone. The group of pastors that came forward with this allegation and members of a local N.A.A.C.P filed the complaint with the Justice Department. They claim, Specifically, it asserts that African-Americans have been excluded from positions in the schools upper administration; that black women at New Mexico were virtually left out of all positions of authority; and that blacks on the faculty faced disparity in salaries compared with fellow minority colleagues. (NYTimes). Institutional Discrimination of this sort is not uncommon, especially in a college level. Discrimination occurs at every college and whether or not you believe it almost everyone has said or at least thought something that is considered discrimination. That being said we ourselves have been subject to age discrimination, because we are students, we are less capable and more-willing to grunt /dirty work, which is unusual for a person elder than us to experience. It is all around us, whether people are willing to believe it. We dont live anywhere near a perfect community, or ever will see one. That being said, its time for people to stop pulling race cards and using such as an excuse, be the best you can be, if you dont get hired for example, its not because you are black or Jewish or even white. People should just abide by the phrase what doesnt kill you, makes you stronger from now on to avoid circumstances where people think are covertly discriminated.
