MARINE ENGINEERING Human beings have always been fascinated by the high tides and vastness of oceans.

Throughout the history of civilisations they have shown remarkable will to tame these and utilise them for the betterment of culture and expansion of civilisation. But, behind all these efforts, there lay the person who very well understood the ergonomics of ships and designed the ships in a such a way that the sailors were able to conquer the world. In the modern era these persons are called Marine Engineers and the discipline they need to know is called Marine Engineering. Marine Engineers are responsible for the safe running of ship engines, boilers, all the machineries of the ship, steam connections as well as maintenance, repair, upgradation and construction of all the relevant marine machinery. They are the overall incharge of the engine and its crew and ensure the safety and standards of the marine body. With modern development, the role of Marine Engineers has widened and smoothened, too, Electronis navigation has helped the Marine Engineering a lot. The responsibilities of a Marine Engineer are large and therefore require some essential personal attributes. The person should have organising ability, team spirit, ability to get on well with others, be cool and cope well under pressure, should be able to handle crisis, good at conceptualising forms and structures, excellent communication skills, physical fitness and above all, liking for sea. The admiration of sea itself will develop and enhance these qualities. The very nature of the job fascinates many youngsters to take Marine Engineering as their career. They too, like their ancestors, dream of sea faring and modern technological developments have made their dream more reachable than evey before. Eligibility: The minimum educational qualification is 10+2 with PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics). However, Biology at 10+2 is an added advantage. There are also certain medical norms (physical fitness) that need to be met to get entry into the Marine Engineering courses. One should have a good physique with sound health. The minimum height should health. The minimum height should be 150cms with correlated weight and proportionate chest with minimum 5-cm expansion. Courses: There are two main training centres-Training Ship Chanakya, Mumbai and Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI), Kolkata - which conduct courses in Marine Engineering. The New Delhi - based International Maritime Institute also conducts courses related to the field. The degree offered in these courses is that of Engineering or B.Sc. in Nautical Sciences. A number of private institutes also offer courses in Marine Engineering. However, such courses must be approved by the Mumbai-based Director General of Shipping. It is to be noted that in most of the institutes only male candidates are allowed to carry on the courses. However, there are a few institutes, which also allow female candidates. Aspirants must check up with such institutes

before appearing in the entrance examination. Prospects and Remunerations: A Marine Engineer has a number of options after he earns the degree. Marine Engineers primarily work in the Indian Merchant Navy. The Merchant Navy mainly comprises of tankers, liners, passenger vehicles, ore carriers and other type of specialised ships. These Merchant Navy ships are operated by public sector as well as private sector shipping companies. One has diversified option to select the ship one wants to join. A Marine Engineer enters as a Junior Engineer. Even at the entry level, the remuneration received by a Marine Engineer is high one. A person who joins the Merchant Navy as Junior Engineer earns around Rs.25,000 to Rs.30,000 per month in any foreign vessel. But, the most important benefit is that, by virtue of travelling for more than six months outside Indian borders, he gets the status of an NRI (Non-Resident Indian) and thus gets exemption from taxes plus he also gets other benefits too. Apart from ships, Marine Engineers are also employed for the designing, research, consulting, training and education purposes in the related field. How to become an astronaut The astronaut selection process is based on selection criteria matching the requirements of the various types of mission foreseen. Astronaut candidates are preselected in ESA Member States and finally selected by ESA. Major aspects taken into consideration are psychological suitability, scientific and technical competence, and fulfilment of medical criteria. The present composition of the astronaut corps is a result of the fusion of all national astronaut teams of ESA member states with the ESA astronaut team into one single European Astronaut Corps. The professional background of the members is widespread and expresses the large scope of activities encountered in space research, technology development and operations. In the future EAC will be solely responsible for the selection of the next generation of European astronauts. This will be decided in accordance with ESA's obligations as a partner in the International Space Station programme. The selection, performed in 1991/92, was based on the following criteria: General Requirements Applicants, male or female, must be nationals of an ESA Member State. The preferred age range is 27 to 37. Applicants must be within the height range of 153 to 190 cm. They must speak and read English and have a university degree (or equivalent) in Natural Sciences, Engineering, or Medicine, and preferably at least three years' postgraduate related professional experience, or flying experience acquired as test, military or airline pilot. Medical Requirements Applicants should be in good health, have a satisfactory medical history, and be of a normal weight and sound mental disposition. Certain tests are performed to evaluate applicants' bodily systems (muscular, cardiovascular and vestibular). These tests employ such facilities as centrifuges, rotating chairs, pressure chambers and aircraft. Psychological Requirements General characteristics expected of applicants include good reasoning capability and memory, concentration, aptitude for spatial orientation, and manual dexterity. An applicant's personality should be characterised by high motivation, flexibility, gregariousness, empathy with fellow workers, low level of or disposition towards aggressiveness, and emotional stability. Professional Requirements The astronaut candidate must be well versed in scientific disciplines and must have proven outstanding ability in applicable fields, preferably including operational skills.

The Next milestone in manned spaceflight acvtivities is the build-up of the International Space Station. Further selection of astronauts will use criteria defined in co-ordination with the International Space Station partners How To Become An Astronaut Many of us dreamed of becoming a NASA astronaut when we were young. Some of us never got over that dream. When John Glenn rode the shuttle for NASA in 1998 at the age of 77, that flight breathed new hope into many would-be astronauts. So, how do you become an astronaut? Let's discover the NASA employment path, together. Difficulty: Hard Time Required: Varies, But Several Years Here's How: 1. Begin your preparation as early as possible. Learn the basics in elementary school, especially math and science. Read everything you can get your hands on about astronauts, space, and whatever field you want to work in. 2. Learn how to work effectively in a team environment. Also, don't forget the world around you. NASA does not exist in a vacuum, and you shouldn't either. Astronauts are team players. 3. Since a college degree is a necessity, it is imperative you do well in high school first. Study hard, make good grades, especially on the SAT or ACT. Make a good decision on the course of study you wish to pursue, whether it be engineering, biological or physical science, or mathematics. 4. NASA's "minimum degree requirement" for an astronaut is a bachelor's from an accredited institution, so work hard in your chosen classes. Your grades should allow you to enroll in a good Master of Science program. 5. After college, you'll need 3 years of related increasingly responsible professional experience in your field. You should start preparing for this by choosing wisely when it comes to internships and coop positions in college. 6. Communication plays a very vital role, not only verbally, but written as well. In addition, the Space industry is now a global enterprise. It's a good idea to be bilingual as well. 7. Once you've got your degree and some work experience, it's time to apply for those astronauts positions. Fill out a Standard Form 171 (government employment application) and send it to Astronaut Selection Office, NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, TX 77058. 8. The astronaut application will be reviewed and ranked by various criteria, including: height, experience and expertise. NASA receives an average of 4,015 pllications to fill around 20 slots every 2 years.

9. Next, another screening process, and about 118 from the original 4,015 will be invited to Johnson Space Center for a week of interviews, medical exams and orientation. The ASB interviews each astronaut candidate and assigns them a rating based on: experience and potential, motivation, ability to function as a team member, communicative abilities, and adaptability. You can fail due to interpersonal skills. 10. If you are interested in a pilot/commander position, instead of mission specialist, you will also be required to log in at least 1,000 hours of flight time in command of a jet aircraft. During training all crew members train aboard a T-38 jet, in which the controls are identical to the Space Shuttle and therefore, can be used as a flight simulator either on the ground or in actual flight. 11. Many applicants do not meet medical standards while others withdraw after learning all that the job entails. After collecting significant information, the Astronaut Selection Board will choose its final candidates and pass that recommendation on the NASA Administrator who will make the final pick for employment. 12. Once selected, astronaut candidates begin a rigorous training program. Expect many long days, even after your training ends. Being an astronaut can be hard on family life. Tips: 1. An interesting fact is that out of 195 former and present astronauts, 123 have taken part in Scouting. It seems that scouting is a great place to learn many of the skills required to be an astronaut. 2. Don't approach your college career concerned with how it will appear on a resume. Make sure you have a real interest in your course of study. 3. As soon as you arrive on campus, go to the co-operative and recruitment offices to explore the possibilities of an internship or work/study position to gain vital experience necessary to be marketable. If you wait till your senior year, or even after graduation, you've missed a golden opportunity. 4. Don't rest on your laurels. Most astronauts to date have continued with career and/or education to the post-graduate levels and were able to substitute education for all or part of their work experience requirement. Still, the application process is a long one, and you still need to eat in the meantime. 5. The Astronaut Selection Board (ASB) is looking for people who have done very well in a technical field. Make sure you have sterling recommendations, especially from undergraduate and graduate school professors that can attest to your problem solving abilities, communicability with others and your ability to work well in a team. Astronaut Requirements Have you ever wondered if you have what it takes to become a NASA Astronaut? The term "astronaut" derives from the Greek words meaning "space sailor," and refers to all who have been launched as crew members aboard NASA spacecraft bound for orbit and beyond. Since the inception of NASA's human space flight program, we have also maintained the term "astronaut" as the title for those selected to join the NASA corps of astronauts who make "space sailing" their career profession. The term "cosmonaut" refers to those space sailors who are members of the Russian space program. The crew of each launched spacecraft is made up of astronauts or cosmonauts drawn from the various categories described in these pages. The crew assignments and duties of commander, pilot, mission specialist, or payload specialist are drawn from the NASA professional career astronauts. Mission Applicants for the Astronaut Candidate Program must be citizens of the United States. Commander and Pilot Astronaut Duties Pilot astronauts serve as both Space Shuttle and International Space Station commanders and pilots. During flight, the commander has onboard responsibility for the vehicle, crew, mission success and safety of flight. The pilot assists the commander in controlling and operating the vehicle. In addition, the pilot may assist in the deployment and retrieval of satellites utilizing the remote manipulator system, in extravehicular activities, and in other payload operations. Basic requirements for an Astronaut Pilot include the following: 1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics. An advanced degree is desirable. Quality of academic preparation is important. 2. At least 1,000 hours pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft. Flight test experience is highly desirable. 3. Ability to pass a NASA space physical which is similar to a military or civilian flight physical and includes the following specific standards:

Distant visual acuity: 20/100 or better uncorrected, correctable to 20/20 each eye. Blood pressure: 140/90 measured in a sitting position. Height between 62 and 75 inches.

Mission Specialists Mission specialist astronauts work with the commander and the pilot and have overall responsibility for coordinating operations in the following areas: systems, crew activity planning, consumables usage, and experiment/payload operations. Mission specialists are trained in the details of the onboard systems, as well as the operational characteristics, mission requirements/ objectives, and supporting equipment/systems for each of the experiments conducted on their assigned missions. Mission specialists perform extravehicular activities (EVAs), or space walks, operate the remote manipulator system, and are responsible for payloads and specific experiment operations. Mission Specialist Astronaut Duties Mission specialist astronauts, working with the commander and pilot, have overall responsibility for the coordination of Shuttle operations in the areas of crew activity planning, consumables usage, and experiment and payload operations. Mission specialists are required to have a detailed knowledge of Shuttle systems, as well as detailed knowledge of the operational characteristics, mission requirements and objectives, and supporting systems and equipment for each payload element on their assigned missions. Mission specialists will perform extravehicular activities, payload handling using the remote manipulator system, and perform or assist in specific experiment operations. Basic requirements for a Mission Specialist include the following: 1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics. Degree must be followed by at least three years of related, progressively responsible, professional experience. An advanced degree is desirable and may be substituted for part or all of the experience requirement (master's degree = 1 year of experience, doctoral degree = 3 years of experience). Quality of academic preparation is important. 2. Ability to pass a NASA space physical, which is similar to a military or civilian flight physical and includes the following specific standards:

Distance visual acuity: 20/200 or better uncorrected, correctable to 20/20, each eye. Blood pressure: 140/90 measured in a sitting position. 3. Height between 58.5 and 76 inches.

Payload Specialists Payload specialists are persons other than NASA astronauts (including foreign nationals) who have specialized onboard duties; they may be added to shuttle crews if activities that have unique requirements are involved and more than the minimum crew size of five is needed. First consideration for additional crew members is given to qualified NASA mission specialists. When payload specialists are required they are nominated by NASA, the foreign sponsor, or the designated payload sponsor. In the case of NASA or NASArelated payloads, the nominations are based on the recommendations of the appropriate Investigator Working Group (IWG). Although payload specialists are not part of the Astronaut Candidate Program, they must have the appropriate education and training related to the payload or experiment. All applicants must meet certain physical requirements and must pass NASA space physical examinations with varying standards depending on classification.
