EDITORIAL
Hail readers!
Welcome to Issue 6 of Slaughterama. We're glad to be back. As you are all probably aware, there have been some major changes here at Slaughterama H.Q. with some staff leaving and others arriving. On the plus side of that, there is new talent on board and lots of new ideas. You will find these days that you cannot just pick Slaughterama up as you used to be able to do before; now you have to ask for it at the counter of your local stockist. We had reports of issues being thrown away, so this preventative action was necessary to keep the zine free. You will also notice that no month appears on the cover. This was done because we will only be releasing issues from now on when we have enough quality material to fill an entire issue. Watch the Slaughterama forum on www.houseofnoizz.com or ask around to find out when the next issue will be released. And if you happen to miss one, get in touch with me via e-mail at slaughteramaster@gmail.com to request back issues. I must also state in this editorial that Slaughterama is being released purely for the enjoyment of the people who are fans of the featured bands. We are in no way trying to, or have ever attempted to misrepresent the local scene. Instead, we offer interviews and space in the zine to any bands wishing to do press. So if you enjoyed Slaughterama in the past and are happy to see the return of the zine, then enjoy! If you didn't enjoy the zine in the past but are reading it now, we trust that the changes will be to your satisfaction. And if you never liked and still don't like what we do, then it must be comforting to know that it cost you nothing to pick up, and it will cost you nothing to put down, and never pick up again. Whoever you are, thanks for reading, and thanks for your support. Catch you next issue!

NEWS
Swedish death metallers VOMITORY have been confirmed for this year's Gothenburg Deathfest, set to take place September 3 at Musikens Hus in Gothenburg, Sweden. Also scheduled to perform at the festival are NOMINON, ABORTED, DEGRADE and 9TH PLAGUE. More bands will be announced soon. In other news, VOMITORY entered Speedball Studios in Sweden May 27 to record the song "Mass Appeal Madness" for the upcoming NAPALM DEATH tribute album on No Tolerance Records. The track will be mixed by Henrik Larsson, who has worked with the band has on their last four albums. CHTON, the Norwegian death metal band featuring Kenneth of KEEP OF KALESSIN and Torstein of MANES, have parted ways with drummer Vidar. "The split is totally amicable and has been something we've seen coming for a little while now," the band write on their web site." As the activity in camp CHTON has only increased, he has chosen to step down and focus on his family life. The gig we did at Nattrock was the last thing Vidar did with us. Horns raised to everyone that was there! We have found a replacement, and will announce this as we post pictures of the new line-up. Thanks to Vidar for his dedication to CHTON, and good luck for the future!" HOUSE OF NOIZZ recently completed an interview with Silvio Massaro, vocalist of Australian Power / Progressive Metal band Vanishing Point. During the interview Silvio gave his thoughts the new album, Embrace The Silence and expressed interest in touring New Zealand. Watch www.houseofnoizz.com for details on when the full interview will air, and look out for a transcript in an upcoming issue of SLAUGHTERAMA. IRON MAIDEN frontman Bruce Dickinson is planning on recording an all-covers album with longtime collaborator/guitarist Roy Z, the singer told the French magazine Hard & Heavy during a recent interview. Dickinson told the magazine that he knows exactly which covers he wants to record, but offered no further details on the project. During the same interview, Bruce revealed that he originally planned on issuing a solo DVD prior to the release of his new solo album, "Tyranny of Souls", but changed his mind. He did not, however, confirm that he will release the DVD in the fall, as has been widely speculated. Dickinson also stated that he may schedule several European festival appearances during the summer of 2006. Swedish neo-classical metallers NARNIA are continuing work on their fifth full-length album, tentatively due before the end of the year via Nuclear Blast Records. An update on the recording sessions from the group's web site reads as follows: "We have finished tracking drums and rhythm guitars and parts of the bass and keyboard parts have been finished with great result! The songs cover the whole spectrum from crushing, heavy riffs to the most catchy, up-tempo songs we have ever done. We have been doing some serious digging among our melodic roots again this time but we are also working on a modern sound for the material." THERION, THRESHOLD, FREEDOM CALL, ORPHANED LAND and FIREWIND have been officially confirmed for the U.K. edition of the ProgPower festival, set to take place March 25, 2006 at The Centaur in Cheltenham. "Recognizing an upturn in the popularity of progressive and power metal here over the last few years, and offering a brand-new venue with unrivalled facilities and at a time of year not already over-subscribed with other metal festivals, we intend to do our European and U.S. counterparts proud," the festival organizers write on their web site. "With THERION, THRESHOLD, FREEDOM CALL, ORPHANED LAND and FIREWIND already confirmed, and two more bands to be announced, we hope to make this festival a great success." TRIAL BY FIRE have almost finished recording their first EP, scheduled for release within the next few months. The four tracks that will be featured on the disc are The Hunter's Moon, Raised On Infinity, Enchantress Of Pain and Trial By Fire. Catch TRIAL BY FIRE when they perform at The Studio in Auckland on June 30. See below for more details.

FEEDBACK
our gigs on the 26th of March and they are being supported by 3 local metal bands (yeah we missed out on getting this into your next issue, but we enjoyed Brendon Williams' interview with them in Feb's issue). Jadam also has gained sponsorship through D.B. to set up a Battle of the Bands type gig (called Underground SouNZ Band-Face-Off) where bands battle it out on stage for $1000 cash (and a whole swag of beer). I guess we just wanted to say "hi" from Christchurch, and to let you know we support what you are doing with your Metal zine, and we are interested in hooking up with some Metal bands who may be interested in playing some of our gigs. Our web-site is www.jadam.co.nz if any bands want to touch bases with us, and Jadam looks forward to the next issue of Slaughterama. Cheers, Jadam Productions (reviving the underground)

Hi there, We had the good luck to get our hands on the February issue of your Slaughterama Metal zine and loved it; it is great to see Metal getting a voice in NZ. My name is Paul Wilson and I run an underground production company called Jadam Productions, we are a small group who promote underground music of the rock / Metal / punk genre. We are non-profit and work toward getting bands out from the practice rooms and garages and onto the stage. We also try to get bands a fair deal when it comes to being paid for gigs because many Christchurch Bars and clubs won't pay bands for their time and talents. We are really interested in hooking up with Metal bands to do gigs in Christchurch. We have had MeatYard play at Jadam (the name of our gig), and we have 8Foot playing at one of

INTERVIEW
OUR EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH DON COCHINO
every time. But basically the album was received pretty well. We play a lot of songs live and it seems that people are already familiar with these songs. Fans keep coming over after the show and telling us that they like the album. I think the album is pretty straightforward and easy to get into. Tell us about the photos from the new album. Are the girls real or computergenerated? No-no, theyre real. This guy in Vienna used to collect these pictures. Hes totally into it. Its pretty cool. Youre here for the third time. How do you find New Zealand? Good; always good, thats why we keep coming back. New Zealands got the craziest mosh pits. Its quite scary sometimes, because the stages are so small, and people keep bumping into the microphone. The audience is very good in New Zealand. What is your best impression from this leg of the tour? Where was your best concert? Christchurch was pretty wild, and Auckland too. The biggest crowd is of course in Auckland. This is the end of the tour; weve been all over Europe Germany, Holland, Italy. We got a few shows booked in England and Ireland, then more shows in Germany and a couple of festival appearances. Lets talk about the new album, Ampeauty. Hows the reaction from the public? There are good reviews and bad reviews The artwork is of course quite interesting. Some people would call it art, others could find it rather disturbing. What do you think? I think those girls are quite nice looking. (laughs) Would you call Pungent Stench a Death Metal band? We have roots in Death Metal, that's for sure, but I wouldnt call it a Death Metal band. We got so many other influences, especially on the new album.

INTERVIEW
Who writes the music and the lyrics? Mostly we do it together. Get in the rehearsal room and jam. Do you have any plans for the next record? There will be two cover CDs coming out. One is going to be a Metal/Rock tribute, and the other one with our versions of non-Metal songs. We got about 20 cover songs to choose from. What are your influences? Basically, the stuff I grew up with, NWOBHM, stuff like that. Kiss is one of our biggest influences, and of course Judas Priest. I also like Jimi Hendrix and ZZ Top. This is the stuff I grew up with and I still like it. Speaking of Kiss, how important do you think the stage show is? The show is important. Im not even talking about pyrotechnics, but the band should enjoy what theyre doing. Not stand around, being all bored, but some movement should happen on stage for sure. What is the message behind Pungent Stench? There is no message. (laughs) Its basically just rocknroll, it should be entertaining. Horror movies are also made for entertainment, not to bring a message across. We want people to have a good time; get their aggression out. Whats the best thing about being in a Heavy Metal band? A lot of things, really. Traveling, seeing different places, being on stage Whats the highlight in Pungent Stench's career? Is there anything that sticks out, maybe a big show or something like that? I wouldnt call any of our big shows highlights. But its always cool to go to countries like Russia or New Zealand, where not many other bands tour. Do you do music full-time? Well, I have another band and a recording studio and Alex owns a record store. Hes had it for like six years, yknow So what do you do when youre just hanging out? Well, we do a lot of rehearsals and then just regular stuff that everybody else does. Go out, have a few drinks, you know. Im trying to do some sports once in a while, too. Keep myself in shape nall

INTERVIEW
Tell us about the scene in Austria. What are the usual numbers you get at a gig? The scene is small. Usually we get around 600 people, and some shows are really small. Sometimes they dont even have a stage there you know, so bands are set up right on the floor very small gigs. How difficult is it to make it for a band from Austria? Can you recall the beginning of Pungent Stench? We recorded our first demo during a rehearsal. We sold some of them, but we really wanted to go to England and record a proper demo in a professional studio. We were hitchhiking to England and staying with the guys from Napalm Death. The whole thing was really low budget. We recorded the demo in the same studio where Napalm Death recorded their second album. We later released that demo as 7. Later we played a few shows in Germany and a guy from Nuclear Blast was there. They got a hold of that demo and offered us a deal, thats how it started. Well, thank you for this interview, we hope to see you in New Zealand again! Thank you, guys. We will definitely be back here!

LIVE REVIEW
enthusiastic crowd, better sound, and longer (and looser) set. As is customary with Stench shows, there's several covers, and they open with "Shout It Out Loud" (Kiss). It's a "hey... we're ready; stop smoking and come in from the garden" intro that leads nicely into their own material. The old and new are integrated throughout; the new album "Ampeauty" gets a run via "The Amp Hymn" and the awesome juggernaut opener that is "Lynndie". Older chestnuts like "Sputter Supper" and "Viva La Muerte" are tossed into the ether with casual regularity, whilst the distastefully infantile "Splatterday Night Fever" causes the same intestinal churnings it did nearly a decade and a half ago. Guitarist/vocalist Martin Schirenc still looks as mean and yet, unstuffy as he does on the live clips filmed for "Video La Muerte". Alex Wank is relatively anonymous behind the kit but seems particularly at home on the "Club Mondo Bizarre" material ("Klyster Boogie,"

Kings Arms Tavern 19 March 2005

By Adrian Osmon Maybe it's just an excuse to get away from the grip of their own winter... Austria's Pungent Stench played tonight as the last date of their THIRD New Zealand tour. Surely there's not a whole heap of money to be made; their last two albums (since the reformation) haven't been released locally, yet they still come; there's the aforementioned seasonal escape and I guess the kudos, but you gotta think it's predominantly a (rare) genuine case of the heart being in the right place. Like the shows in 2003 they play two nights in Auckland, the first (at the Masonic in '03 and Safari Lounge this time) is decent, but the real keeper (again) is this Kings Arms one. For the same simple reasons: bigger and more

LIVE REVIEW
filtering back that it was just undergarments in New Plymouth (held in a gentlemen's club no less). It has been a very impressive display from an experienced troupe and pleasingly varied from the night before (sensible when half the crowd had been at Safari Lounge), leading to the only small moan I have: no "Shrunken And Mummified Bitch!" Played the night before, I know, but it would've been wonderful to hear it again over the bigger P.A. It's not to be (they play Mentors' "Four 'F' Club" instead, a [drunk] crowd favorite) and sooner than we'd like, Vienna's Pungent Stench are departing our shores again. Hope you got your share.

"Choked Just For A Joke") and the new bassist (who may or may not be Fabio Testy who played on "Ampeauty") seems to prefer the covers (very animated versions of "God Of Thunder," "Mother" and La Bamba.) They remain fullyclothed despite it being a warm night in Auckland and in contrast to the reports

INTERVIEW
Slaughterama recently talked to Legions Horde about who they are and what they do. Here is the interview.
Is Legions Horde a 'separatist' movement, or more of an addition to the growing, diverse metal scene in New Zealand? LHP was originally created for the underage metal followers out South Auckland way, and what people dont realise is, it was created when most members were still in school making it illegal to attend pub gigs. We dont consider it to be a separatist group, but more of an organisation catering to people who dont live so local to the city. Which bands associated with Legions Horde should people be the most aware of as strong up-and-comers? A relatively unknown Death/Doom Metal band by the name of Abyssal Dysphoria have extreme talent and have been regular performers at most LHP gigs. They will most definitely be a band to look out for in the future. Also recent additions such as Warbeast, Trial By Fire, Heavy Artillery are all worthy of notable mention with standout annihilations at the two previous LHP gigs and are sure to slay in the not too distant future. Bands to soon make an appearance will have to be Asylum, Dark Vision, Black Mortuary and The Contradiction of Christ. What can people expect at gigs organised by Legions Horde? Only an intense metal atmosphere with a wide range of different styles of metal in one sitting, along with a friendly crowd. A guaranteed experience you wont forget. So take the time to come along and see what South Auckland's only metal event has got to offer. What genres of metal run strong throughout the Legions Horde community?

Tell us about what Legions Horde Productions is. Legions Horde Productions is an organization based on providing South Aucklanders an acceptable all ages metal environment where bands and followers of metal can get together to enjoy the music. Overall a friendly environment which welcomes everyone who shares the same interests in metal. How long has Legions Horde been going for? About two years but only since late last year did we start having decent sized gigs. What age group are the people who normally attend Legions Horde gigs? When we first started out it mainly consisted of teenagers around the 17-18 mark. However, since the ageing of Legions Horde and the introduction of new bands and their fans the age group now varies from 16 all the way up to 25+ year olds. Dont let the young age fool you though; the moshpits can get pretty violent. What was your biggest motivation to create and run Legions Horde? The bands, the people... the support is ongoing and its all in good favour. In an environment like Legions Horde everyone plays their part and it doesnt matter whether they are in the crowd, in a band or one of the organisers; they are all equally important roles.

INTERVIEW
Black and Death Metal had a strong presence back in the early days of formation and still continue to be strong today. Though recently a more Thrash/Power/Heavy swarm of metal bands have joined which means LHP caters for pretty much every genre now. You guys are based in South Auckland... is there a shortage of metal fans out that way? Haha no way man, there seems to be a whole army of metallers out this way as I guess it is mainly dominated with a strong hip hop presence, therefore people are keen as to come along to LHP gatherings. Not only do we attract South Aucklanders but fans as far as Whangarei have made regular appearances to gigs in the past. Where are most Legions Horde gigs held, and where can people find out about future shows? In the early days gigs were held in underground garages with the venues being in Manukau and Papatoetoe. However, recently Ramarama Hall has been a favorite for everyone and we have held two gigs out there already (Storm of the Horde, December 2004 and Enemy of the Mainstream, April 2005). Though we are always keen to try out new places so if anyone has a barn, knows a bar manager or likewise, give us a shout so that we can organize some alternative venues. The website is the best source of information for upcoming gigs. Your website has a media section and a merchandise section, both currently under construction. What can people expect from both of these areas once constructed? Bands such as Trial By Fire and Warbeast are all in the studio process as we speak and we hope that once they are complete, the LHP site will be a good way to help distribute their music. The merchandise such as t-shirts, sweatshirts among other things are currently being designed and should be out for distribution within the next few months, and the site is a good way to advertise these products. What happens at a Legions Horde gathering? These are social meetings where people can get together and talk and listen to good metal, which is also ideal for musicians looking for bands and vice versa. Really just a place designed for people to congregate. Why do you think that Legions Horde (among many other persons, organisations and bands in NZ) dedicate so much time and energy to the advancement of metal with so little financial return? Metal is our passion, its what we all enjoy most and we have no hesitation in sharing this experience with everyone else. Somewhere along the line money does come into it, but at the end of the day we are willing to lose more rather than make a gain. Its worth the while as long as we can fund gigs everyone is happy. How do bands go about becoming associated with Legions Horde? The process is very simple really Log onto the site (www.legionshorde.tk), click on the contact page, fill in a description of your band (dont forget to leave a contact email) and we will get back to you. Bands sometimes assume that they are signing their lives away when they join up with us but this is far from the truth. LHP is here to support you and bring metal to the people who need it, nothing else needs to be said. What can people expect from Legions Horde in the future? As far as the future goes we can definitely say only good things are going to happen as more people spread the word and come to support. We can expect a diverse metal atmosphere here in South Auckland.

ALBUM REVIEWS
The Wicked Sonic Scriptures of The End Times/Songs to Have Your Nightmares With Label: Spikefarm Release Date: 2005 Probably the album of the month for me. Close your eyes and imagine: Finntroll and Ministry meet Immortal and decide to record a soundtrack to The Ring but get stoned somewhere along the way. Fucking brilliant! Another crazy Finnish band, The Wicked are totally out of control, full of horror melodies, Finnish traditional Humppa, Black Metal, industrial, creepy sounds and dialogues from movies (including Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), orchestral movements and all sorts of unexpected musical ideas. If you like late Arcturus youre gonna love this bastard! One of those things you just cant stop listening to. Highly recommended on drugs! 10/10 - Review by: Max Thrasher Bruce Dickinson Tyranny of Souls Label: Mayan Release Date: 2005 Wicked Sensation Exceptional Label: SPV Release Date: 2004

Really good hard rock. Wicked Sensation take their roots in classic stuff like MSG, House of Lords, Dokken, Lynch Mob, Whitesnake and so on. There are quite a few really explosive tracks here and some very well written mid-tempo songs. Theres nothing extremely new here, but I dont think new is the point of this music. The point is writing catchy, memorable songs that would please those who miss the abovementioned House of Lords and Lynch Mob. Shining Light and Back to My Bed are two songs here that are guaranteed to be stuck in your head for a while. Altogether, very nice. 8/10 - Review by: Max Thrasher

Vreid Kraft Label: Tabu Recordings Release Date: 2004

Great work from the voice of Iron Maiden. I must admit that being a huge Maiden fan, I can hardly be objective, but there are a few undisputed facts here: This is a very strong Hard Rock album. Some of you may recall the complex structures of "Skunkworks" or "Balls to Picasso" well, this time it's not the case. Tyranny of Souls is much simpler (which means, easier to listen to). The songs are shorter, catchier, and very melodic, with typical Dickinson trademarks everywhere. Yet, this is not Tattooed Millionaire. The sound is heavier and reminds rather of 1997s Accident of Birth. Altogether, as I said, this is a Hard Rock album. You can almost hear some Deep Purple and Rainbow in parts, but with some sinister aftertaste, if I may. I found it really hard to choose best songs here, and Ill leave it to you to make this choice for yourself. Highly recommended not only to Iron Maiden fans, but to all Heavy Metal fans in general. Pretty much as close to perfection as possible. 10/10 Review by Max Thrasher

And so the story goes Windir, the founder of the Norwegian Black Metal band also titled Windir passed away in a snowy blizzard and so, from the frosty remains comes Vreid. An eclectic mix of rocky Black Metal of the classic kind is more than welcomed on the majority of this album; 'Kraft.' With tracks thus named 'Songen At Fangen,' 'Wrath Of Mine' and 'Raped By Light,' it has an overall bouncy up-tempo feeling amidst the black. Other tracks, for example 'Empty,' seep with touches of inspired Nordic folk, adding a tint of a more (dare I say it) mellow, almost pop/gothic tinted vocal influence, Opeth / Katatoniaish even maybe, and 'Helvete' (Euronymous anyone?) has just a wicked winding electronic starter that draws you in for the anticipated, much nastier ending. Still a 'True' Black Metal album; check out 'Unholy Water' and 'Evig Pine' for proof, but with a taste of something quite inspiring and refreshing. 7/10 - Review by: Stine

ALBUM REVIEWS
Kaamos Luciifer Rising Label: Candlelight Release Date: 2005 Jennie Tebler Silverwing Label: Black Mark Release Date: 2005

Although fairly unknown, Kaamos first kicked off in 1998, releassing their debut self-titled album in 2002 which kind of dropped off in the NZ market without notice. Now they have Lucifer Rising to flaunt in our faces and it's up there with the best in ball-blasting Death Metal style, gutteral vocals and more than enough rhythm to get those messy mops banging. The title track, Black Revelation is a great eyeopener, paving the way for a pretty much consistent ride. Even the lower tempo tracks like Theriomorphic Pandaemonium (whatever that means!). Ascent and Dark Void still deliver the goods of the nod. If you're looking for something completely different, or over extreme, you won't find it here; but if it's pure death you want, don't hesitate to give this a try. 6.5/10 Review by: Stine IMMOLATION Harnessing Ruin Label: Olympic Recordings Release Date: 2005

This is a two-track EP from Jennie Tebler, who must be familiar to the audience by her long-term collaboration with Swedish wizards Lake Of Tears. The EP features Silverwing and Song to Hall Up High both written, arranged and recorded by Quorthon, the mastermind of legendary Bathory. Apparently it was intended to be a full-length album, which couldnt be completed due to Quorthons tragic departure in 2004. Luckily Jennie finished the songs, so now we have a chance to hear Quorthons final performance. Musically this is a mix of Bathorys epic sound and Jennies enchanting and gentle voice. I must say that female vocals really emphasize the music, and add another dimension to it, and Id really want to hear a full album by this project. Unfortunately, since Quorthon passed on, this wont be happening. The only negative point that I can think of is that the EP is so damn short (under 8 minutes), but I guess its nobodys fault. Absolutely essential for Bathory fans (for the reason stated above), Lake Of Tears fans and those who enjoy the likes of The Gathering, Within Temptation, Nightwish, etc. 9/10 Review by: Max Thrasher

I would of thought it'd be pretty hard to top the last album from these guys. Unholy Cult was damn Heavy but had those great melodies rooted deeply within it, and now 2005's Harnessing Ruin arrives. There is definitely a great warm and familiar sound to Immolation which is apparent here, but something has changed; the structure is not quite as punishing, so it's safe to say the boys are trying something different , which can be rare in the Classic Death Metal scheme of things, variety being difficult to achieve. So expect Immolation material but perhaps with a more gentle approach. Gentle??!! No, don't run screaming, pick it up and give it a listen you may love it. Big fans will definitely need to have it nonetheless to keep collections complete. Overall I found it a little more down-tuned and maybe too reflective, but with enough tasty parts to enjoy it. Am I being too judgemental one might wonder... 6/10 Review by: Stine

Kreator Enemy of God Label: SPV Release Date: 2005

Very nice, solid album from the German Thrash Metal veterans. After the softer sound of last two records Kreator migrate back to the traditional Thrash grounds. The album is somewhere between Violent Revolution and Coma of Souls sometimes reminiscent of Slayer, but the trademark of Kreator is certainly there. Although the first three tracks seem to be the most impressive, the rest of the material is sure to satisfy the fans. At the end of the day, you didn't really expect a bad album from Kreator, did you? 8/10 - Review by: Max Thrasher

LIVE REVIEW
WARD 10 AT LINCOLN GREEN, HENDERSON
INTERGALACTIC LIVE, THURSDAY 3 MARCH 2005.
nor heard before, providing the vocals, and the bass lines, on both bass guitar and an amplified cello. To a moderate crowd, Ward 10 performed a great set, albeit with some technical difficulties, where the fuse blew and thus cut power to the entire stage. While the fuse was being located, Dave took the opportunity to visit the bar for a refill. The fuse was located and the power was reset (so was the drummer!) and Ward 10 was back in session. Although in the middle of their set, they smoothly picked up where the power left off, until a song or two later the fuse blew again, demanding another round of drinks. There were calls from the crowd to continue acoustically on the cello but Gimpy subdued them with a smidge of nipple rubbing. Once again the fuse, power and drummer were all up and running again. Lights, phone cameras, and Ward 10 action. Their set completed without further mishaps. Ward 10 if you havent seen them yet, they are definitely worth a look and a listen. These guys have a good thing going. As the evening closed with the pop-punk sounds of Troy the Snail I made my exit with all senses satisfied, albeit a slight ringing in the ears. Thanks to Intergalactic Live and thanks to all the bands for a night of good live sounds.

Written by Maebhe & Britney

Another helping of live bands at the Lincoln Green dished up by the hardworking Intergalactic Live team, with the nights lineup promising to be an alternative-metal-pop-thrash-punk smorgasboard. Nonchalont kicked off proceedings with some original rock tunes and although nothing really leapt out and grabbed me aurally, they played a solid set. Schlonglongfong took the stage next and delivered some heavy-thrash-punk with reckless energy and abandon, coercing the crowd into busting some moves. More originals in the set and less covers wouldve pleased me further. Ward 10, what can I say? Theyre certainly a breath of fresh air in the metal scene. The drummer has no tongue, while the Gimp in the middle barely keeps inside his mask. Over the past year or so Ive watched this three man band meld and develop into what is a powerful and catchy display of talents. Matt and Dave on guitar blend their riffs, and rhythms together, yet each flare of their fingers is distinguishable from the other. The man behind the mask, Ant, manages to put on both a visual and an aural display Ive never seen

INTERVIEW
15 Questions with Ross McGuire from
We all grew up on the greats. Iron Maiden, The Thrash Big 4, Judas Priest, Ozzy and Sabbath, Motorhead. Each of us also have our own individual influences we bring to the band, like Cradle of Filth, Slayer, Queensryche, Misfits, Anthrax, Vai and Satch, NWOBHM, etc. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TOPICS YOU HAVE COVERED WITH YOUR SONGS SO FAR? I like lyrics that tell a story rather than the pain of losing your girlfriend. The song Trial By Fire is about witch trials. Warren's approach is more poetic, as hes a huge Cradle fan, his songs 'Enchantress Of Pain,' 'Ablaze His Lustful Fire,' and 'Raised On Infinity' are a different style to my writing, but work well together. Christian made his writing debut with Her Veil about the exhumation of a loved one. Movies are a huge influence; The Hunters Moon and a song weve almost finished entitled The Fog are based around two movies. "ROSS MCGUIRE" AND "TRIAL BY FIRE" RHYME. WAS THAT INTENTIONAL, OR A FLUKE?

Written by Brendon Williams

GIVE US A GENERAL RUN-DOWN ON WHAT TRIAL BY FIRE IS ALL ABOUT YOUR SOUND, YOUR OUTLOOK, ETC. Trial By Fire is true pure Metal. Heavy, fast, and loud! We are about making heavy uncompromising music for the legions of people out there, the whole band and myself included, who are sick of the crap that passes for music these days. HOW DIFFICULT WAS IT TO FIND THE LINE-UP YOU HAVE? Initially it was hard. I encountered musicians who werent committed and that was a hindrance, but the lineup now is the strongest yet. Warren (guitars) and Christian (bass) are terrific songwriters and musicians, and with the recent inclusion of Cameron (drums), (he) has breathed new life into our older songs, and added a new energy to the band. AS A NEW BAND TO EMERGE ON THE AUCKLAND LIVE SCENE, HOW HAVE YOU FOUND THE RESPONSE FROM THE PUBLIC SO FAR? The response has been tremendous. At our second gig we had the bar owner playing air guitar on top of the bar. People have a hunger for true Heavy Metal. Before playing with our friends in Warbeast and Just One Fix, I hadnt heard another band play any Motorhead, Maiden or Priest covers lately, and the reaction from the crowds was insane. WHAT ARTISTS HAVE INSPIRED YOU TO MAKE MUSIC?

15

INTERVIEW
Hahaha, Id never actually noticed that 'til now. Purely a coincidence I assure you. WHAT'S THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNT FROM THE WORLD OF MUSIC SO FAR? Success only comes to those who work for it! Nothing comes for free but if you work hard, it will come. WHO WOULD TRIAL BY FIRE TOUR WITH IF GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO TOUR WITH ANY 3 BANDS IN THE WORLD? Honestly, I would love to tour with any of the Metal bands we have currently played with. They have all been so awesome. Theres been more than three, so you know who you are. IF THERE HAD TO BE ONE MESSAGE YOU WANTED PEOPLE TO TAKE AWAY WITH THEM WHEN GOING TO A TRIAL BY FIRE SHOW, WHAT WOULD THAT MESSAGE BE? To give generously when the collector calls! Lol. Nah, probably that what you have just witnessed was an amazing Metal show, and that they were kiwi. WHAT IS TRIAL BY FIRE DOING DIFFERENTLY FROM OTHER BANDS OUT THERE? Well for a start we got a banner! I think if anything we have worked on more of an image than other bands. Image isnt everything, but you need something to pull a crowd. WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST ABOUT METAL? The sound of a double kick drum miked up! A distorted E5 chord! The compulsive desire to headbang to a killer song! A Halford or Dickinson scream! The cover to Somewhere In Time! WHAT'S THE TRIAL BY FIRE SONG YOU LIKE PLAYING THE MOST? I love to play all the songs, because each of them has something unique to them that I enjoy, but definitely the song Trial By Fire is a particular favourite, because it was the first song I wrote for the band. HOW OFTEN WILL TRIAL BY FIRE BE GIGGING THIS YEAR? ARE THERE PLANS TO GIG OUTSIDE AUCKLAND? Well be playing as often as we can around Auckland, and yes we plan this year to travel around the country to play. WHERE SHOULD PEOPLE GO TO FIND OUT INFORMATION ON WHERE AND WHEN TRIAL BY FIRE ARE PLAYING? Until our website is up and running, hopefully soon, check out the forum at houseofnoizz.com, or nzmetal.com. And for those without internet access, music stores like the Rock Shop and record stores like Real Groovy. WHAT DO YOU WANT THE BAND TO HAVE ACCOMPLISHED BY THIS TIME NEXT YEAR? This time next year we will have an EP out for sure, but apart from that, hopefully we play a few high profile gigs, play a few different cities and have a larger fan base, which already is steadily growing. Thank you for doing these 15 questions for us. Thank you.

MOVIE REVIEW
I DRINK YOUR BLOOD
STARRING: Bhaskar, Jadine Wong, Rhonda Fultz, George Patterson. DIRECTOR: David E. Durston.
REVIEW By Brendon Williams One of the titles from a series of classic, previously hard-to-find horror releases by Umbrella Entertainment, the cover promised many great things. Here are some of the tag-lines from the DVD cover:
"Previously banned now released uncut!" "One of the most truly horrific thrillers ever produced!!" "Satanic hippies on a holiday to hell!" "The first U.S. film to receive an "X" rating for its graphic, depraved violence"

For a 1970's movie, this "Z-grade trash exploitation" is really quite a good watch. Not as gory as you'd think, but the storyline is actually good enough to keep you interested in what's going on. Obviously, this release isn't for people who like Hollywood style movies if your definition of a horror movie is thrillers like "Scream" or even B-grade slasher flicks like the "Friday The 13th" series, you may be disappointed in the quality of this film. But if you're the type who appreciates the charm and atmosphere of movies made on shoestring budgets, with too many sub-par techniques to mention, then this may be a movie for you to add to your "must watch" list. RATING: 6/10 DID YOU KNOW: The face seen on the movie posters for this film was originally part of the poster art for the US/British monster film, "It!" (1966).

SUMMARY by Josh Pasnak A band of satanist hippies roll into a town and begin terrorizing the local folk. They rape a local girl and her grandpa goes after them. He fails and is given LSD. This bothers his grandson and he gets back at the hippies by feeding them meat pies infected with blood from a rabid dog. They turn into crazed lunatics and begin killing and/or infecting everything in their path.
