Visit of Mr. Herbie Hancock UNESCOs Goodwill Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue To Indonesian 16-23 December 2011
19 December I Jakarta - Mr. Herbie Hancock, Jazz icon and Grammy Awards winner will be visiting Indonesia on 16-23 December 2011. Mr Hancock was appointed as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue, in a ceremony at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on July 22, 2011. As a Goodwill Ambassador, Mr Hancock is visiting Indonesia to help bring attention to the work that UNESCO and its partners have carried out. During his visit to Indonesia, Mr. Hancock will be visiting Yogyakarta (17-21 December 2011) to visit the villages surrounding Borobudur then go to the Borobudur Temple compounds themselves, where he take part in a tree-planting ceremony, launch the UNESCO and National Geographic Indonesia publication entitled Borobudur: the Road to Recovery CommunityBased Rehabilitation Work and Sustainable Tourism Development and take part in a press conference. After these commitments he will have time to explore the temple itself. In Yogyakarta Mr. Hancock will also visit the Prambanan Temple Compounds where he will be briefed about the impact of the 2006 earthquake and the ongoing restorations and the Water Castle and Sultan Palace in the centre of Yogyakarta. While in Jakarta (21-23 December), Mr. Hancock will be visiting the ASPNet Green School, Museum and the Istiqlal Grand Mosque and Cathedral. On the 23rd of December in line with remembering 7 year of Tsunami Aceh, in-cooperation with The Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI), UNESCO, The Rolling Stone Magazine, and Java Jazz Production, Mr. Herbie Hancock will be participating as speaker on a half day discussion forum / talk show on the Role of Music in Building Culture of Disaster Awareness Among Youth in Indonesia. The objectives of the talk show are: Socialize and sensitize the role of music in building the culture of youth in general and specifically for culture of disaster awareness and preparedness Promote the non commercial disaster awareness music that has been produced by The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and the 15 musicians Expose the role of UNESCO goodwill ambassadors to the Indonesian youth. Appreciate and motivate Indonesian musicians, especially those who are very concern on hazards and disasters in Indonesia, by having the chance to perform and express their music with Mr. Herbie Hancock, a world class musician. Goodwill Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue Jazz icon Herbie Hancock was inducted as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue, in a ceremony at UNESCO headquarters on July 22, 2011. Recognizing Herbie Hancocks dedication to the promotion of peace through dialogue, culture and the arts, the Director-General Irina Bokova has asked the celebrated jazz musician to contribute to UNESCOs efforts to promote mutual understanding among cultures, with a particular emphasis on fostering the emergence of new and creative ideas amongst youth, to find solutions to global problems, as well as on ensuring equal access to the diversity of artistic expressions. It feels like an answer to some of my biggest dreams, Hancock told The Associated Press. UNESCO really cares about working toward the globalized peaceful world that people actually want to live in. One idea that is interesting to me is jazz as a metaphor for targeting literacy. With jazz, you don't just pick up an instrument and start improvising: it's about discipline. Freedom with discipline is the ethos of jazz.

Hancock's openness to other cultures and faith in humanism make him a natural fit at UNESCO, which was created to "build peace in the minds of men". He is already embracing his new role and working with the UNESCO Secretariat, national delegations, and the U.S. Mission to design and develop new projects. He participated in a roundtable discussion on music and cultural dialogue with ambassadors to UNESCO from several different countries, including India, Brazil, Sri Lanka, and Senegal. Furthermore, he called for April 30 to be recognized as international jazz day and announced that he will lobby both UNESCO and U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, for UNESCO to cite jazz on its World Heritage List of 936 properties forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value. He is very interested in raising awareness about the importance of World Heritage, both tangible and intangible. Biography Herbert Jeffrey "Herbie" Hancock was born April 12, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois. Like many jazz pianists, Hancock started with a classical music education. He studied from age seven, and his talent was recognized early. Considered a child prodigy, he played the first movement of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 5 at a young people's concert with the Chicago Symphony at age eleven. Through his teens, Hancock never had a jazz teacher, but developed his ear and sense of harmony. He is an American pianist, bandleader and composer. As part of Miles Davis's "second great quintet," Hancock helped to redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section and was one of the primary architects of the "post-bop" sound. He was one of the first jazz musicians to embrace music synthesizers and funk music (characterized by syncopated drum beats). Hancock's music is often melodic and accessible; he has had many songs "cross over" and achieved success among pop audiences. His music embraces elements of funk and soul while adopting freer stylistic elements from jazz. In his jazz improvisation, he possesses a unique creative blend of jazz, blues, and modern classical music, with harmonic stylings much like the styles of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.
