THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD (CHRISTMAS)

The Order of Mass can be found on page 3 of Breaking Bread Welcome to St. Gabriel Church! We want to be the first to wish you and your family a truly blessed Christmas. We are happy that you have chosen to worship God with us on this great feast; we hope you will rejoin us throughout the year. Each Christmas liturgy we celebrate in this parish is unique; therefore, this worship aid is provided to assist you in your prayer and participation. The worship aid follows the structure of the Mass, so please note the indications for your particular liturgy as we progress through our prayer. Numbers indicate a hymn number in the Breaking Bread missalette in your pew racks; Breaking Bread also contains the various responses for the Mass on the pages indicated by the worship aid. Out of courtesy towards the efforts of our various musical ensembles and in keeping with the reverence of the Holy Mass about to be celebrated, please turn off all electronic devices and refrain from talking in normal voice during our prelude. The Lord said to me: You are my Son. It is I who have begotten you this day. (Verses from Psalm 2)

Before the marvel of this night, adoring, fold your wings and bow, then tear the sky apart with light, and with your news the world endow. Proclaim the birth of Christ and peace, that fear and death and sorrow cease: Sing peace, sing peace, sing gift of peace, sing peace, sing gift of peace! Awake the sleeping world with song, this is the day the Lord has made. Assemble here, celestial throng, in royal splendor come arrayed. Give earth a glimpse of heavnly bliss, a teasing taste of what they miss: Sing bliss, sing bliss, sing endless bliss, sing bliss, sing endless bliss! The love that we have always known, our constant joy and endless light, now to the loveless world be shown, now break upon its deathly night. Into one song compress the love that rules our universe above: Sing love, sing love, sing God is love, sing love, sing God is love! ~Jaroslav Vajda

When he is King we will give him the Kings gifts, myrrh for its sweetness, and gold for a crown, beautiful robes, said the young girl to Joseph. Fair with her firstborn on Bethlehem Down. Bethlehem Down is full of the starlight, winds for the spices, and stars for the gold, Mary for sleep, and for lullaby music; songs of a shepherd by Bethlehem fold. When he is King they will clothe him in gravesheets, myrrh for embalming, and wood for a crown; He that lies now in the white arms of Mary, sleeping so lightly on Bethlehem Down. Here he has peace and a short while for dreaming. Close-huddled oxen to keep him from cold, Mary for love, and for lullaby music; songs of a shepherd by Bethlehem fold. ~Bruce Blunt

Jesus was born in a humble stable, into a poor family. Simple shepherds were the first witnesses to this event. In this poverty heavens glory was made manifest. The Church never tires of singing the glory of this night: The Virgin today brings into the world the Eternal, and the earth offers a cave to the Inaccessible. The angels and shepherds praise him and the magi advance with the star, for you are born for us, Little Child, God eternal! (CCC, 525)

They shall exult before the LORD, for he comes; for he comes to rule the earth. He shall rule the world with justice and the peoples with his constancy. R.

ABOUT OUR CHRISTMAS MUSIC

Merry Christmas from all here at St. Gabriel! We hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas season. You will notice this year that the translation of the Mass is slightly different. For your assistance, we have placed most of the relevant responses in this worship aid; other responses are indicated by cues. One of the unique elements of the Roman Rite Christmas celebration is that we have four distinct liturgies for Christmas: Vigil Mass, Midnight Mass, Mass at Dawn, and Mass during the Day. Each Mass focuses on a particular aspect of the Nativity. In the Vigil Mass (celebrated at 4PM), we hear the prophecies leading to the birth of Christ: the focus is so much on expectation that the Gospel is the genealogy of Christ. At this Mass, our children lead the musical portions of worship. Our childrens choir (composed of grades 3-8) sings the whole Mass, with augmentation by our handbells (grades 7-8) and angel choir (grades K-2). A new feature of our liturgy this year is the Living Gospel presented in place of the homily. Our parish children re-enact the gospel of the Midnight Mass (which focuses on the Nativity of Christ). Our 6PM Mass utilizes the texts of the Mass during the Night (Midnight Mass). At 6PM, we hear the same beloved Christmas carols we hear at the other Masses, but with the addition of two vocal solos. I wonder as I wander is one of the most beloved Christmas carols from traditional American sources; our cantor sings the most popular arrangement (by John Jacob Niles) of this beautifully haunting piece. We also hear the famous aria from Messiah, He shall feed his flock. This aria reminds us that Jesus Christ comes according to Gods plan for the purpose of shepherding us to Eternal Life. Our Midnight Mass is always led by our fine, allvolunteer choir. At 11:30 we sing a variety of carols interspersed with readings from the Nativity accounts of the Gospels. This year, our focus is on English-language pieces. However, our first piece, the Introit (Entrance Antiphon) for Mass bears mentioning: we traditionally think of the joyful aspect of Christmas. The Introit, from Psalm 2, reminds us that along with joy, we should remember that the Christ child truly brings the gift of peace, a gift that remains throughout the year. This is contrasted in the Psalm with the futility of humankinds attempts to contradict Gods plan. Our other carols are poetic glosses on the Nativity scenes. At Midnight Mass, we hear the Gospel account of the Nativity of Christ: interestingly enough, this is only Christmas liturgy where the Nativity IS the Gospel reading! So, the rest of our music deals particularly with this reality. The offertory of the Mass is one of the most famous pieces of Renaissance polyphony in the world. Victorias O magnum mysterium is sung in every corner of the world; its music, with the light and shadows characteristic of Victorias writing, perfectly reflects this profound text. One can almost see the mystery of the God of the universe lying helpless in a manger painted by this luminous choral setting. Rather than focus on the Nativity narrative (the focus of Midnight Mass), the Christmas Mass during the Day (10AM) focuses on the mission of Christ. We hear the prologue to St. Johns Gospel, in which we hear his description of the Word made flesh. Today, we have made a dedicated effort to sing many of the favorite carols of Christmas, beginning with the prelude and progressing to the end of Mass with Hark the herald angels sing. Our entrance antiphon is from Handels Messiah. It is one of the most famous of the choruses from the Messiah, and is a favorite for its festive flourishes. The offertory repeats that of Midnight Mass. The voluntary after all Masses is excerpted from the first organ symphony of Louis Vierne, former organist of Notre-Dame-de-Paris. This youthful piece is full of exuberance that matches well with the joy of Christmas. Repetitive motives in the manuals (hands) are contrasted again a pedal melody. A development section elaborates on this material and leads us to a thrilling recapitulationending this piece with a festal flourish!
