What is the SYCL?

The South Yuba River Citizens League started in 1983 as a group of concerned citizens banding togeth- er to oppose the construction of two dams on the South Yuba River. They were successful as the dam projects were defeated resulting in 39 miles of the South Yuba River to be permanently protected through the State Wild and Scenic designation. In addition to producing the Wild & Scenic Film Festival”, SYRCL (pronounced “circle”), is currently organizing a national campaign for the restoration of California’s wild Chinook salmon populations in the lower Yuba River. They also coordinate the largest citizen-based river monitoring program in the state and host other events for the com- munity including the Greater Yuba River Clean-Up that organizes over 700 volunteers in an annual litter removal project. Christmas Traditions From Around The World
Christmas Traditions From Around The World

Belgium - On the sixth of December Sinterklaas or Saint Nicholas is celebrated, which is an entirely different holiday from Christmas. Santa Claus in Belgium is called de Kerstman or le Père Noël and he arrives on Christmas day to bring children presents. Small family presents are exchange from under the tree or in stockings. Christmas breakfast is special sweet bread called ‘cougnou’ or ‘coug- nolle’ which is supposed to be shaped like baby Jesus. Some fam- ilies will have another big meal on Christmas day.

Brazil - Father Christmas is called Papai Noel. Many Christmas cus- toms are similar to the United States. For those who have enough money, a special Christmas meal will be chicken, turkey, ham, rice, salad, pork, fresh and dried fruits, often with beer. Poorer people will have chicken, rice and beans and will also drink beer. The well to do have traditional Christmas tress will those less fortunate having Christmas trees made of plastic or

is just a dry tree branch.

Since

December is warm and there is no

snow many Brazilian’s put cotton over their Christmas tree branch to simulate snow. Christmas time varies a lot from south to north region.

Finland - Finnish people believe that Father Christmas lives in the north part of Finland called Korvatunturi located north of the Arctic Circle. There are three holy days of Christmas - Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. On Christmas Eve residents decorate a spruce tree in the home. Santa comes to homes were there are children and places presents under

the tree. In homes with no children gifts are collected in big sacks which are placed near the front door. Boxing Day is the day after Christmas. Since servants would have to work on Christmas day,

they are given December 26 th off. Their employers would give them a box containing gifts and bonuses.

France - Christmas is called ‘Noël. Christmas trees are many times decorated in the old way with red

they have an ‘Adventskranz’ - a wreath of leaves with four candles. On each Sunday for the 4 weeks of Advent, another candle is lit. Father Christmas, Der Weihnachtsmann, leaves presents in the late after- noon of Christmas Eve after people have been to a church meeting. One person in the family will ring a bell and call everyone to come to the room. On Christmas Day most families will enjoy a meal of fish or goose.

Hungary - Santa Clause, known as Winter Grandfather comes on the 6th of December. Children clean and put their shoes out- side next to the door or window before they go to sleep. The next day candies and/or small toys are found in the shoes in red bags. On December 24th chil- dren go to their relatives or a movie while little Jesus brings the tree and presents to their house. It is customary to hang edible things on the tree like golden wrapped assorted choco- lates and meringues beside the glass balls, candles (real or electri- cal), and sparklers. Families usually cook a festive dinner of fresh fish, rice or potatoes and home made pastries as dessert. After dinner, the tree would be viewed by the chil- dren for the first time.

Latvia - Latvians believe that Father Christmas brings presents on each of the 12 days of Christmas starting on Christmas Eve. Usually the pres- ents are put under the family Christmas tree. It is widely believed that Latvia is the birthplace of the decorated Christmas tree. The Christmas Day meal is cooked brown peas with bacon (pork) sauce, small pies, cabbage and sausage.

Christmas Traditions From Around The World Belgium - On the sixth of December Sinterklaas or Saint

ribbons and real white wax candles. Father Christmas is called Père Noël. The Christmas meal is an important family gathering with good meat and the best wine. Few people send Christmas cards. New Year cards wishing everyone good luck and joy for the New Year are far more popular. Christmas lunch is a starter of fois gras, a strong tasting pate made from goose liver, fol- lowed by lunch of seafood. Decorations in houses are minimal but western traditions are now starting to show up as shops and town centers have Christmas deco- rations including trees.

Germany - Many houses will have little wooden frames holding elec- tric candles in their windows. Often

Drew Harrison, the renowned “Lennon” vocalist of Northern California’s premiere Beatles tribute band, The Sun Kings, performs a very special show celebrating the life and music of John Lennon on Friday,

December 16th, 8:00pm at the Center for the Arts, Grass Valley. In the Spirit of

Lennon is Harrison’s tribute to John Lennon, and interpretation of his music. He goes beyond just sounding like him, but captures the inten- sity that Lennon brought to the Beatles music as well as his own. This intimate and emotional performance has been seen and heard nationwide, in South America as wells as Europe. He was invited to perform In the Spirit of Lennon at the Latin American Beatles Fest in Buenos Aires and in Louisville, Kentucky where he per- formed at Abbey Road on the River. This year Harrison has been invited to the coveted International Beatles Week in Liverpool, England where he will perform his tribute to Lennon, as well as with The Sun Kings. their annual holiday concert under the direction of conductor Ken Hardin. This sea- son’s offering includes several rhythmically unusual pieces, featur- ing “Misa Criolla” by Argentine composer Ariel Ramirez. The contempo- rary mass is based on traditional Latin American rhythms. The main soloists for the Misa Criolla are tenor Ken Getz and baritone Steve Nicholson, who states, “I’m very excited about singing Ariel Ramírez’ Misa Criolla. It’s historically significant as one of the first non-Latin Masses which also gives it a great emo- tional depth and exuberance.” Other solo parts will be sung from groups within the choir. The Chorale’s musi- cal talents will be further showcased in a few a cappella selections including “African Noel” and the West Indies

Antsy McClain & the Trailer Park Troubadours

Singer, songwriter, humorist and small town philosopher Antsy McClain will perform Friday,

December 30 th at 8:00pm at the Center for the Arts, Grass Valley. McClain writes what he knows: The good life. Staging his live shows from a small, fictitious trailer park called Pine View Heights (pat- terned after his own childhood surroundings and experi- ences); he is free from an over- abundance of material things and appreciates time with family and friends. Sharing his mantra of “Enjoy the Ride,” McClain has won friendship and collabora- tion with some of the most talented musicians in the world. With such a wide circle of mentors like Waylon Jennings, Tommy Smothers, guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel and cowboy poet Baxter Black, it’s no won-

Paula Poundstone brings in the New Year and benefits local libraries

Paula Poundstone returns to The Center for the Arts on Saturday, December 31 at 8:00pm for another rau- cous New Years Eve performance. Armed with nothing but a stool, a microphone and a can of Diet Pepsi, Paula’s ability to create humor on the spot has become

the stuff of legend. It’s little wonder at times people leave Paula’s shows debating whether the random peo- ple she talked to were “plants” – which, of course they aren’t. Poundstone’s razor-sharp wit made her a perfect fit as a regular panelist on NPR’s popular weekly news quiz show, “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me.” Her first book, “There’s Nothing in This Book That I Meant to Say,” is out in paperback and on audio. Lobos one of the most innovative and critically acclaimed groups in the world. Rolling Stone magazine wrote: “with the exception of U2, no other band has stayed on top of its game as long as Los Lobos.” In this very special performances, Hidalgo and Perez offer a departure from the larger scale Los Lobos shows and aim focus on the songs and the process of their cre- ation. The two started writing songs together when they were in high school, long before they ever became members East L.A.’s Los Lobos. As the main songwrit- ers in one of the worlds most solid and long-lasting roots-rock enclaves, they’ve accumulated an outstand- ing collection of tunes. But until now they had never

offered fans a chance to hear those songs in their purest, elemental form. Tickets are $35.00 for member and $40.00 for non-members. For ticket purchase and information call 274-8384 or visit www.centerfort- hearts.org

Lucinda Williams presents an acoustic performance

The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley is pleased to present An Evening with Lucinda Williams on Sunday January 22 at 7:30pm. This performance will present a rare opportunity to hear this ground-breaking artist in an intimate setting of the Center’s 300-seat Main Stage Theater. The two time Grammy winner, one as a per- former and one for penning Mary Chapin Carpenter’s “Passionate Kisses”, Williams is credited with helping to place the Americana music movement at the forefront of listeners’ minds. Her latest offering album is enti- tled Blessed. The Album was recorded at the end of what Williams calls “a really big writing streak that gave me enough to make two albums,” brings some of the most straightforward songs she’s ever written. While it’s not a concept album as such, Blessed – recorded with producer Don Was – brings together a dozen songs that runs through the dozen short stories. Williams has never hesitated to wave that flag of iconoclasm, but she’s never used it as a shield. Ever since the release of
