COMMUNITY EVENT
Nevada City Film Festival Celebrates its 10th Year
From January 13th to the 15th, South Yuba River Citizens League (SYCL) will be presenting their 10th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival. Each year, this Film Festival draws top filmmakers, celebrities, leading activists, social innovators and well-known world adventurers to Nevada City to not only show films but many times interact with Film Festival attendees. Over 350 films were submitted for consideration for showing at this years event. That total was narrowed down to 115 films that will be presented at various area theaters and locations during the three days. This years Wild & Scenic Film Festival will also feature a selection of some of the most popular films that have been shown in past years. Considered the largest film festival of its kind, those attending will see award winning films about nature, community activism, adventure, conservation, water, energy and climate change, wildlife, environmental justice, agriculture, Native American and indigenous cul-

tures. According to the event web site www.wildandscenicfilmfestival.org this years films combine filmmaking, cinematography and storytelling to inform, inspire and ignite solutions and possibilities to restore the earth and human communities while creating a positive future for the next generation. Films were selected from across the world, covering diverse topics from a man returning to his cultural heritage to smoke salmon in a traditional fish camp, in Smokin Fish, to an exploration of biomimicry in Second Nature: The Biomimicry Evolution, which emulates natures ideas to help us become more sustainable engineers, chemists,

architects and business leaders. A complete listing of films to be shown, along with ticket purchase information, can be found at www.wildandscenicfilmfestival.org. Last years event drew record crowds with ticket sales increasing by over 20%. What is the SYCL? The South Yuba River Citizens League started in 1983 as a group of concerned citizens banding together to oppose the construction of two dams on the South Yuba River. They were successful as the dam projects were defeated resulting in 39 miles of the South Yuba River to be permanently protected through the State Wild and Scenic designation. In addition to producing the Wild & Scenic Film Festival, SYRCL (pronounced circle), is currently organizing a national campaign for the restoration of Californias wild Chinook salmon populations in the lower Yuba River. They also coordinate the largest citizen-based river monitoring program in the state and host other events for the community including the Greater Yuba River Clean-Up that organizes over 700 volunteers in an annual litter removal project. Christmas Traditions From Around The World

Belgium - On the sixth of December Sinterklaas or Saint Nicholas is celebrated, which is an entirely different holiday from Christmas. Santa Claus in Belgium is called de Kerstman or le Pre Nol and he arrives on Christmas day to bring children presents. Small family presents are exchange from under the tree or in stockings. Christmas breakfast is special sweet bread called cougnou or cougnolle which is supposed to be shaped like baby Jesus. Some families will have another big meal on Christmas day. Brazil - Father Christmas is called Papai Noel. Many Christmas customs are similar to the United States. For those who have enough money, a special Christmas meal will be chicken, turkey, ham, rice, salad, pork, fresh and dried fruits, often with beer. Poorer people will have chicken, rice and beans and will also drink beer. The well to do have traditional Christmas tress will those less fortunate having Christmas trees made of plastic or is just a dry tree branch. Since December is warm and there is no snow many Brazilians put cotton over their Christmas tree branch to simulate snow. Christmas time varies a lot from south to north region. Finland - Finnish people believe that Father Christmas lives in the north part of Finland called Korvatunturi located north of the Arctic Circle. There are three holy days of Christmas - Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. On Christmas Eve residents decorate a spruce tree in the home. Santa comes to homes were there are children and places presents under

the tree. In homes with no children gifts are collected in big sacks which are placed near the front door. Boxing Day is the day after Christmas. Since servants would have to work on Christmas day, they are given December 26th off. Their employers would give them a box containing gifts and bonuses. France - Christmas is called Nol. Christmas trees are many times decorated in the old way with red

they have an Adventskranz - a wreath of leaves with four candles. On each Sunday for the 4 weeks of Advent, another candle is lit. Father Christmas, Der Weihnachtsmann, leaves presents in the late afternoon of Christmas Eve after people have been to a church meeting. One person in the family will ring a bell and call everyone to come to the room. On Christmas Day most families will enjoy a meal of fish or goose. Hungary - Santa Clause, known as Winter Grandfather comes on the 6th of December. Children clean and put their shoes outside next to the door or window before they go to sleep. The next day candies and/or small toys are found in the shoes in red bags. On December 24th children go to their relatives or a movie while little Jesus brings the tree and presents to their house. It is customary to hang edible things on the tree like golden wrapped assorted chocolates and meringues beside the glass balls, candles (real or electrical), and sparklers. Families usually cook a festive dinner of fresh fish, rice or potatoes and home made pastries as dessert. After dinner, the tree would be viewed by the children for the first time. Latvia - Latvians believe that Father Christmas brings presents on each of the 12 days of Christmas starting on Christmas Eve. Usually the presents are put under the family Christmas tree. It is widely believed that Latvia is the birthplace of the decorated Christmas tree. The Christmas Day meal is cooked brown peas with bacon (pork) sauce, small pies, cabbage and sausage.

ribbons and real white wax candles. Father Christmas is called Pre Nol. The Christmas meal is an important family gathering with good meat and the best wine. Few people send Christmas cards. New Year cards wishing everyone good luck and joy for the New Year are far more popular. Christmas lunch is a starter of fois gras, a strong tasting pate made from goose liver, followed by lunch of seafood. Decorations in houses are minimal but western traditions are now starting to show up as shops and town centers have Christmas decorations including trees. Germany - Many houses will have little wooden frames holding electric candles in their windows. Often

FMP FUN THINGS TO DO

Drew Harrison - The Spirit of Lennon Drew Harrison, the renowned Lennon vocalist of Northern Californias premiere Beatles tribute band, The Sun Kings, performs a very special show celebrating the life and music of John Lennon on Friday, December 16th, 8:00pm at the Center for the Arts, Grass Valley. In the Spirit of Lennon is Harrisons tribute to John Lennon, and interpretation of his music. He goes beyond just sounding like him, but captures the intensity that Lennon brought to the Beatles music as well as his own. This intimate and emotional performance has been seen and heard nationwide, in South America as wells as Europe. He was invited to perform In the Spirit of Lennon at the Latin American Beatles Fest in Buenos Aires and in Louisville, Kentucky where he performed at Abbey Road on the River. This year Harrison has been invited to the coveted International Beatles Week in Liverpool, England where he will perform his tribute to Lennon, as well as with The Sun Kings. Antsy McClain & the Trailer Park Troubadours Singer, songwriter, humorist and small town philosopher Antsy McClain will perform Friday, December 30th at 8:00pm at the Center for the Arts, Grass Valley. McClain writes what he knows: The good life. Staging his live shows from a small, fictitious trailer park called Pine View Heights (patterned after his own childhood surroundings and experiences); he is free from an overabundance of material things and appreciates time with family and friends. Sharing his mantra of Enjoy the Ride, McClain has won friendship and collaboration with some of the most talented musicians in the world. With such a wide circle of mentors like Waylon Jennings, Tommy Smothers, guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel and cowboy poet Baxter Black, its no won-

der McClain marches to the beat of a different drum. And his influences dont stop there. His live shows touch upon Country, Rockabilly, Jazz, Swing, and a number of Pop culture references. McClains poetry, heart-felt ballads and humorous tales have garnered praise from such artists as Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Lindsay Buckingham, and David Wilcox, to name a few. Tickets are $28.50 for members and non-members. For ticket purchase and information call 274-8384 or visit www.centerforthearts.org. Paula Poundstone brings in the New Year and benefits local libraries Paula Poundstone returns to The Center for the Arts on Saturday, December 31 at 8:00pm for another raucous New Years Eve performance. Armed with nothing but a stool, a microphone and a can of Diet Pepsi, Paulas ability to create humor on the spot has become the stuff of legend. Its little wonder at times people leave Paulas shows debating whether the random people she talked to were plants which, of course they arent. Poundstones razor-sharp wit made her a perfect fit as a regular panelist on NPRs popular weekly news quiz show, Wait WaitDont Tell Me. Her first book, Theres Nothing in This Book That I Meant to Say, is out in paperback and on audio. Her commentaries

This performance will present a rare opportunity to hear this ground-breaking artist in an intimate setting of the Centers 300-seat Main Stage Theater.
