COMMUNITY EVENT
Nevada City Film Festival Celebrates its 10th Year
From January 13th to the 15th, South Yuba River Citizens League (SYCL) will be presenting their 10th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival. Each year, this Film Festival draws top filmmakers, celebrities, leading activists, social innovators and well-known world adventurers to Nevada City to not only show films but many times interact with Film Festival attendees. Over 350 films were submitted for consideration for showing at this years event. That total was narrowed down to 115 films that will be presented at various area theaters and locations during the three days. This years Wild & Scenic Film Festival will also feature a selection of some of the most popular films that have been shown in past years. Considered the largest film festival of its kind, those attending will see award winning films about nature, community activism, adventure, conservation, water, energy and climate change, wildlife, environmental justice, agriculture, Native American and indigenous cul-
tures. According to the event web site www.wildandscenicfilmfestival.org this years films combine filmmaking, cinematography and storytelling to inform, inspire and ignite solutions and possibilities to restore the earth and human communities while creating a positive future for the next generation. Films were selected from across the world, covering diverse topics from a man returning to his cultural heritage to smoke salmon in a traditional fish camp, in Smokin Fish, to an exploration of biomimicry in Second Nature: The Biomimicry Evolution, which emulates natures ideas to help us become more sustainable engineers, chemists,

architects and business leaders. A complete listing of films to be shown, along with ticket purchase information, can be found at www.wildandscenicfilmfestival.org. Last years event drew record crowds with ticket sales increasing by over 20%. What is the SYCL? The South Yuba River Citizens League started in 1983 as a group of concerned citizens banding together to oppose the construction of two dams on the South Yuba River. They were successful as the dam projects were defeated resulting in 39 miles of the South Yuba River to be permanently protected through the State Wild and Scenic designation. In addition to producing the Wild & Scenic Film Festival, SYRCL (pronounced circle), is currently organizing a national campaign for the restoration of Californias wild Chinook salmon populations in the lower Yuba River. They also coordinate the largest citizen-based river monitoring program in the state and host other events for the community including the Greater Yuba River Clean-Up that organizes over 700 volunteers in an annual litter removal project. the tree. In homes with no children gifts are collected in big sacks which are placed near the front door. Boxing Day is the day after Christmas. Since servants would have to work on Christmas day, they are given December 26th off. Their employers would give them a box containing gifts and bonuses. France - Christmas is called Nol. Christmas trees are many times decorated in the old way with red
they have an Adventskranz - a wreath of leaves with four candles. On each Sunday for the 4 weeks of Advent, another candle is lit. Father Christmas, Der Weihnachtsmann, leaves presents in the late afternoon of Christmas Eve after people have been to a church meeting. One person in the family will ring a bell and call everyone to come to the room. On Christmas Day most families will enjoy a meal of fish or goose. Hungary - Santa Clause, known as Winter Grandfather comes on the 6th of December. Children clean and put their shoes outside next to the door or window before they go to sleep. The next day candies and/or small toys are found in the shoes in red bags. On December 24th children go to their relatives or a movie while little Jesus brings the tree and presents to their house. It is customary to hang edible things on the tree like golden wrapped assorted chocolates and meringues beside the glass balls, candles (real or electrical), and sparklers. Families usually cook a festive dinner of fresh fish, rice or potatoes and home made pastries as dessert. After dinner, the tree would be viewed by the children for the first time. Latvia - Latvians believe that Father Christmas brings presents on each of the 12 days of Christmas starting on Christmas Eve. Usually the presents are put under the family Christmas tree. It is widely believed that Latvia is the birthplace of the decorated Christmas tree. The Christmas Day meal is cooked brown peas with bacon (pork) sauce, small pies, cabbage and sausage.

New Year cards wishing everyone good luck and joy for the New Year are far more popular. Christmas lunch is a starter of fois gras, a strong tasting pate made from goose liver, followed by lunch of seafood. Decorations in houses are minimal but western traditions are now starting to show up as shops and town centers have Christmas decorations including trees.
