1. Identify the goals for SDT (Self Directed Team) both broadly and at the Corpus Christi plant?

Answer 1: Goals for SDTs broadly Improvements in productivity and quality Returns on investment higher than the industry average Achieving 95% or more of design capacity Goals for SDTs at Corpus Christi Plant The plant would not be unionized Adopting a delegating leadership style Flat organization, few levels and blurred lines between management and workforce.

Q2. Explore work force design including inherent challenges, tension and impacts of SDT (Self Directed Team)? Answer 2: Work force design:

The work force design in the traditional roles has Unions, who divide workers into two categories: Production and Maintenance. Work assignment is determined by job-classification and seniority. As the Exhibit 2 gives us the partial Organization structure where there are 8 roles with 27 workers in it. Whereas at the Corpus Christi Plant, there are 4 roles and 27 team members in all. Thus, the structure of the hierarchy at the Corpus Christi is flatter and has less number of levels. The challenges and tensions which are faced by RL Wolfe: 1. Conflict between maintenance and line operator personnel at unionized plants. 2. Sick rate of third shift is 20% higher in Austins and 35% in Columbus plants than at comparable plants. 3. The design capacity being lower, i.e. 82% of design capacity at Corpus Christi, 70% in Austin, and 65% in Columbus plants, as comparable to 95%, which is according to John Amasi is the true measurement of high productivity. Impact of SDT: 1. The Sick rate of third shift is way below than Austins and Columbus. 2. The design capacity is 82% at Corpus Christi, much higher than 70% and 65% of the remaining plants. 3. Flatter organization and more control over production process.

Q3. Explore the motivational impacts of SDT (Self Directed Team) and the concept of empowerment?

Answer 3: SDT motivated the workers and employees in a way that the new hires at the Corpus Christi plant developed a sense of initiative and problem-solving skills, e.g. setting production goals or participate in strategy setting for the plant. Empowerment: One of the major issues surrounding the use of self-directed teams is empowerment. People are empowered when they are given the authority and responsibility to make decisions affecting their work with a minimum of interference. When people are empowered they bring their minds to work. They are engaged in making decisions that affect their part of the business. They take responsibility for their actions.
