AlhamdullilahiRabbilAlamin, the researcher would like to express his deepest


gratitude to the Almighty Allah SWT, the only provider, the most merciful whose
blessing give his guidance, inspiration and good health all the time to conduct the
writing of this thesis and complete his study in the Faculty of Languages and
Literature State University of Makassar. Also Shalawat and Salam are delivered to
our great prophet Muhammad SAW who has brought us from the darkness into the
lightness.
During the writing of the thesis, the researcher received a lot of assistance
from a number of people, as valuable guidance, correction, suggestion, advice and
golden support. Without them, the writing of this thesis would never been possibly
completed. Therefore, the researcher would like to express his greatest thanks and
appreciation for those people.

Special thanks also go to the principal of SMK YAPIP Sungguminasa, St.


Haspiah Habib, A.Md, to English teacher of class XI AK1, Aulia Sari, S.Pd. and the
second year students in academic year 2010/2011 who have kindly and
enthusiastically participated in this research. This thesis would have not been possible
without their cooperation.
His families, especially his beloved mother Najemia and father Mustaring
Ahmad who always give supports and pray for his success in completing the study
this year.

The researcher realizes that, this writing is still the simplest one. Remaining

The Writer

ABSTRACT

Ishak, 2011. Motivating the Students to Read English Material by using


Fairy Tales in SMK YAPIP Sungguminasa. Thesis FBS UNM. Makassar.
(Supervised by M. Asfah Rahman and Indrawaty Asfah).
The purpose of this research is to find out the students motivation in reading
English material by using fairy tales.
This research used pre-experimental research with one group pre/post
questionnaire study design. The first questionnaire was used to find out the students
motivation towards/ without any treatments. The students response some based on
their situation/ attitude for reading English material in class from their teacher. While
the second questionnaire was used to find out the students motivation towards the
use fairy tales as treatment in teaching English reading.
The population of this research was 90 second year students of SMK YAPIP
Sungguminasa in academic year 2010/2011. The writer used external random sample
as a sampling technique. The sample of the students was class XI AK1 which
consisted of 30 students.
The research variables were fairy tales as the independent variable and
students motivation in reading English materials as the dependent variable.
The result of the data analysis indicated that there was significant
improvement of students motivation after being taught by fairy tales. The data
analyzed using t-test showed that the value of t-test was higher than the value of ttable (3.904>2.000). The result of the research showed that the student of SMK
YAPIP Sungguminasa can be motivated in reading English material by using fairy
tales as treatments.
