Oikeo Music Inc is a guild of songwriters, singers, musicians, and artists as well. Maybe some members or subscribers to our magazine arent sure exactly what a guild is, or does. I thought it might be fun to give a bit of European, historical background that might bring insight to all of us. Historians call the times we live in Modern Times, which actually began with the Renaissance. This began in Italy when a few writers chose to write their literature in the Italian language instead of Latin which took power from the church and aristocrats thus bringing knowledge and education to the common man. The Renaissance was an amazing period of genius in our worlds history. The word renaissance means rebirth and it refers to a time when European scholars, called humanists, were rediscovering ancient Greek and Roman writings, new scientific laws, new forms of art and literature, new religious and political ideas, and new lands including America. However, the most distinctive feature during this time period was the value and appreciation given to writers and artists. The writings during this time period brought to light a new conception of life and freedom, a more joyous expression in art, and a boundless play of human feelings encompassing our sense of beauty and intellect. During these times, every town in Europe boasted trade members of associations called craft guilds. By the 14th century there were more than 50 guilds authorized by the local government, sometimes chartered by the King. This was the era of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. Because a guild was valuable and important in the community and to the King, there were rules and regulations. (One note of interest is that the guild rules provided for care of their own sick or needy and required them to take care of their widows and orphans.) Sometimes crafters, artists or musician could become members based on the degree of skill. Sometimes a membership was very hard to obtain because it was passed along through inheritance. Guilds required standards on the quality of articles made or sold. After all, the King was a client! For example, a weavers guild required a certain number of threads to the inch in cloths they crafted. These people literally gave their entire lives to becoming excellent in their craft. A young man would be bound out by his parents to an employer and had to pass an apprenticeship to qualify as a member, usually seven years. This master fed and clothed him and when his seven years were up he became a journeyman working for wages. Guild organizations were full of these loyal, talented and determined craftsmen and artisans. Therefore, they were powerful and had great influence in city government. Here are a few questions we must ask ourselves today. What should our guild mean to our churches, cities, and government? How can we better represent our King, Jesus Christ, as we craft the life changing songs and art that comes from a holy life given 3 Front Yard Worship master? Why dont we consider carefully how we throw together a song or worship service? Why dont we take greater care to becoming meaningful in our churches and communities understanding that this is a lifelong commitment and a privilege? Are we crafting anything worth handing down to our children and their children? Do we have a standard that we are setting in place, not because we are perfectionists, but because we understand the power and privilege of our craft? OK, loosen up a little bit. We arent perfect, but we can strive for the beauty and reflection of God in everything we do. And we must at Oikeo Music Inc. Melissa Saulnier to our

Many songwriters do not know what the process is or how to be paid for original worship songs, choir music or hymns. This is accomplished by acquiring a Christian Copyright Licensing International number (CCLI#). If you arent sure what a CCLI# is we are looking for the opportunity to tell you more about your church and the licensing process for using music. All churches must pay licensing fees every month so that original music can be legally sung in congregations around the world. This means that every time your song is sung in one of these licensed churches, you receive a small, ongoing royalty. Oikeo Music Guild helps our members receive CCLI#s because we are an administrator for CCLI.We take your completed original songs and submit them to CCLI on your behalf. Why My Church Needs Love Inc I serve as director of care ministries at a larger suburban congregation, mobilizing ministry resources to meet needs. In this role, I hear about the needs of members in our church and people in the community, and often they are heart-wrenching stories. But what also tugs my heart is how challenged our church can be to meet all these needs. Let me share some examples. *A family of five who attended our congregation experienced an apartment fire. Their furniture was ruined, all of their clothing was smoke damaged, and their apartment was unlivable. The family had no financial reserves. Both parents worked full time and would be unable to drive their children to school if temporary housing was off the childrens school bus route. They turned to our church for assistance. Their need was legitimate and we knew them. My administrative team of three mobilized to arrange temporary housing, find clothing, and coordinate the childrens transportation. We have many ministries, but only two were readily available to meet their complex needs: our food pantry and our benevolence fund. We had no system for immediately addressing the other issues the family was

facing, short of dropping all other responsibilities and responding. If more than one family simultaneously had needs of a similar nature, we would be maxed out. We did what we could and put many other ministry responsibilities aside until we had ministered to this family. *A family with three children in the back seat of their car appeared at our church claiming homelessness and needing many resources: a place to live, jobs, gas money, and food. We had no way to verify their need and we did not know them. Again, the only ministries available to meet their needs were our food pantry and benevolence fund. *We helped a woman with a gift of cash from our benevolence fund who was later convicted and imprisoned for defrauding multiple churches for thousands of dollars. We had no way to verify the need and we did not know her. These are just three stories out of many weve encountered over the years in our churchs care ministry department.Your church may have similar stories. They range from needs that are legitimate that we can barely meet with our own resources, to a seemingly valid request that we dont know how to verify, to outright fraudulent activity. How do we function as a Christ centered church with compassion and accountability in meeting the material needs of those who appeal to the church for help? The answer is in uniting the Body of Christ to be what each church cannot be by itself. But how can this coming together happen? 5 Front Yard Worship

As I pondered and prayed about a solution to this dilemma, I uncovered a booklet published by Crown Ministries on Benevolence Ministry in Your Church. The booklet clearly stated that a benevolence fund is a poor ministry approach to those in financial distress. Such a fund assuages the churchs conscience concerning Christs mandate to help the sick and the poor, but is little different than the governmental hand out programs via welfare, which has generally failed. Why? The government cannot give love. No relationships are formed, no love is attached, and no accountability to move into independence is provided. Over the years our benevolence fund was the main source of our local outreach to the needy, yet it unfortunately paralleled the secular governmental approach to those in need. Ouch. Church is to be salt and light, not a carbon copy of the worlds methodologies. The Crown Ministry brochure gave an answer, however, it explained how a well-established, 28-year-old ministry called Love In the Name of Christ (Love INC) addresses these issues through its structure of mobilizing the Body of Christ, providing accountability through verifying needs, building relationships, offering love-based outreach, utilizing vast resources of abilities and talents of people in the pews, and being the Church in action. I knew this was the answer to the dilemma in our care ministries department. I Called the 800 telephone number in the Crown Ministry brochure and requested resources about the Love INC approach. patching together pieces of songs for a future recording, Lordwilling, but heres what Id like to share from my heart today: Quite often the Lord brings to mind several people who were instrumental in leading me to the Lord. I hope to make an impact on someones life like they did in mine. God strategically placed people in my life who would in turn pray for me to really know Jesus in my heart. In the 90s, I was living in a 12-unit apartment building in North Hollywood, CA, and one of my neighbors was a man named Kirk. He lived there for a number of years, and had one day decided to move south to Hermosa Beach, which was quite a ways away from the valley where I lived. One day before he Five years later I came to know God began my earthly story in moved away, he asked me when I Jesus Christ and put my faith in Toronto Canada. I was born into was going to start hanging around Him, though I still had to learn an authentic Italian family, and with people of integrity. I had been the short of it is that no one ever how to do that! Uncomfortable Truth Written by E.J. McCrea I would like to start by saying, thank you to everyone who supports Oikeo Music. It takes a great vision and a leap of faith to trust God with something so great. Thank you Melissa for having the faith to believe in yourself and others. As I began to write, please understand that if we dont stand for something, we will fall for anything. Im not writing because of hurt but my love for the ministry as a whole. The Word of God says, And Jesus came and spake unto them saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world, Amen. (Matthew 28:18-20). Ive seen a great deal of separation, discrimination, and competition within the church. I witness a plethora of competitive ministries try to out play, out sing, out worship, out build, out teach, out preach, and out number each other. Gods word says, And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. (Hebrews 10:24-25). There are churchs that select a few ministries that fit their doctrine or personal specifications but fellowship with them alone. Some focus on prosperity and giving more than salvation but is it for building Gods Kingdom or building mans salary? There is so much deception in todays ministries. Proverbs 16:25 says, There is

a way that seems right unto man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Are we hearing Gods voice less and leaning towards our own understanding. Are we giving God our all and doing things with excellence? What about the new fad with churchsnon-denomination. Have we not noticed that nondenomination is a denomination? It was a way to attract more Christians who where hurt and more nonbelievers who looked down on other denominations due to hypocrisy. God talks about the 7 Churchs in Revelation. For every church in America, we all fall under one of those 7 churchs today. If you havent researched them, I strongly recommend you do. We consider Christianity the cool thing to be nowadays but are we really being Christ-like? Have we separated ourselves from the ways of the world or are we trying to be more like them. There was a time when it was hard to find a preacher who was called by God. Today, its a job for over 75 percent of those who preach. They learn the talk, educate themselves, and add titles to prove they are more knowledgeable than others. I think people have failed to realize that God qualifies the called, He doesnt call the qualified. Thats man requirement. God knows our gifts, our abilities, our thoughts, and our heart before we were even consumed. He is All Mighty God, yet we forget where weve come from. Have we lost focus on what God has called us to do? I wonder, what would happen if we took every ministry and for one service, turned off all projectors, sung with no music, took away the chairs and all other amenities that weve added? What would be the response? What if we gave no explanation? Gods word says, So then because thou art lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit thee out of my mouth. (Revelation 3:16). Have 11 Front Yard Worship

we become too comfortable? Have we forgotten what true worship really is? He loves to be worshipped. Why do churchs ignore each others invitation to fellowship? Are we afraid of losing members? Are we discriminating? Is it the music that they listen to? Why wont predominately Black churchs fellowship with predominately White churchs? Or Asian with Pacific Islanders? Or one big city-wide fellowship with all churchs? What causes fear? We should walk by faith and not by sight, right? What makes you uncomfortable? Would the Spirit of the Lord not dwell there? Even the music has changed. In mainstream radio and in church we hear less of the name Jesus or Christ or God. But how many know that theres power in the name of Jesus. Gods word says, demons tremble at the sound of the name Jesus. So why have we down sized God? More and more Christian stations are playing artist that are secular artist. Its a big compromise but what is their purpose? Has this new generation become lovers of self? We are but filthy rags. I know, youre saying, not me I understand. Will you be more committed to the passion of Christ and put God back in the church, in your songs, in your ministries? Ive had the opportunity to be apart of various ministries around the world from D.C.,Alaska, North Dakota, Saudi Arabia, Korea, Missouri, and South Carolina. Through it all, God has kept me. I know we all see or hear about things that happen, especially when youre a part of a ministry but what do we do about it? Do we pray and give it to God? Do we address those issues? Or do we continue to add fuel to the fire? Have we left our first love as God word says? Have we looked more for self gain like bigger Churchs, better musicians, bigger salaries but failed to

help those in need? Why are there so many churchs but so little fellowship? I believe that we should reach all nations but it starts from being able to touch each other, physically, emotionally, and with a change of heart. I hope that we can see things more like God and bring unity back into the body of Christ. I think growth and excellence is great but discrimination and separation is not. Gods word states that Hes coming for one church. Will you be a part of that church? Are you still uncomfortable? As you know, the Grace of God has appeared in the person of Jesus Christ, the eternal Word made flesh. Lets face it, our Master is full of grace and truth and of His fullness we have all received grace upon grace. Literally we have received grace "piled upon" grace. Have you ever been to a seashore? Next time you are at the beach take a look at how the seashore is subject to the continual arrival of wave after wave. This is a picture of grace. Why so? Because in the gospel and because of God's good pleasure we have received and are receiving continual waves of grace in Christ Jesus.

You know, Parker, you have practiced grace on me, he said. You have given me not what I deserved; you have given me what I needed. following is a great illustration of grace. In the 1800s London had two famous preachers, Charles Spurgeon and Joseph Parker. On one occasion, Parker commented about the poor condition of children admitted to Spurgeons orphanage. Word of this came to Spurgeon but by the time it arrived, it was reported to Spurgeon that Parker had criticized the orphanage itself. Spurgeon blasted Parker from his pulpit and the attack was printed in the newspaper and became the talk of the town. Londoners flocked to Parkers church the next Sunday to hear his rebuttal. Heres what Parker said, I understand Dr. Spurgeon is not in his pulpit today, and this is the Jesus is the grace of God in Sunday they use to take an offering human form. His grace is for the orphanage, Parker said. I Glorious (Ephesians 1:6). His suggest we take a love offering for grace is Abundant, (Acts 4:33), the orphanage. Avalon is a new name in guitars but one with an established history and quality heritage. The company that now bears the name Avalon Guitars came into being in the 1980s as the Lowden Guitar Company. Through the years, the companys reputation for producing the very highest quality acoustic guitars was widely acknowledged, although production remained small. The highly skilled team of craftsmen also grew in stature as their experience and know-how developed. Avalon guitars are all about their contribution to the acoustic guitar world and their statement about acoustic guitar design, quality and above all, tone. The very heart and pure anatomy of todays Avalon guitar is bred from many years of traditional craftsmanship and love for guitar music. Discovering an Avalon guitar is like finding a long-lost friend; from the moment you meet it feels immediately, comfortable, reliable and truly rewarding; developing a bond and trust which is consistent and always inspirational.

Todays Avalon guitar represents a true heritage that has been defined by some of the worlds greatest craftsmen and artists. The Legacy Series, in its Premier Series and Custom Shop derivatives provide truly peerless quality and performance. That played-in feel manifests in abundance and underlines the feeling of longstanding friendship.

Todays Avalon guitar is the culmination of decades of creativity and musical excellence; a true representation of the Luthiers art.

Later in the week we returned to Kings Way Christian School to talk to the students ages 6th though 12th grade. Lindsey spoke to them about their selfesteem and how to find it through Gods eyes. She talked to them about seeing themselves holistically the way God looks at us instead of compartmentalizing our bodies. Lindsey used a basketball to give an example of how we tend to section ourselves, but when you twirl the ball the sections disappear. The visual was unique and simple yet the way Lindsey spoke to the students was impacting. During the week she sang at a coffee shop, two churches, the

Continued From Page 5 asked where the ministry headquarters was located, to my surprise I learned it was in our Twin Cities metropolitan area! I began the process described in the materials the Love INC National Headquarters provided Cont. on pg 22 to form a development committee for establishing our non-profit 501 (c) (3) affiliate. I learned that it was best to keep the activities of our affiliate geographically contained in a workable area for those needing help. Churches offering ministry could not be counties apart, as those receiving ministry could not realistically drive long distances.

executive director of the Love INC in Hudsonville, MI, showed us how they were offering a hand up out of poverty and financial crisis, rather than a hand out with continued failure afterwards. I saw people in compassion ministry modeled by Jesus.

Eric Morgan, the executive director of Love INC of the Tri-Cities in Grand Haven, MI, shared a common occurance in the single mom ministry that touched my heart. Every single mom in that community who needs a crib gets one free. As the female volunteer makes the delivery, she asks the single mom if she can take her out for coffee in a few days just to talk. Invariably, the single mom breaks down in tears because someone wants to connect with her relationally and not just be a do-gooder pushing an Even with the clear descriptions item at her for a feel good experience of the Love INC model from the for the volunteer. The Michigan Love INCs were utilizing the talents and gifts of believers who never believed their assets could be used for the Lord. Typical volunteer slots in churches utilize musicians, ushers, Sunday School teachers, bulletin stuffers, small group leaders, lay counselors, nursery attendants, greeters, etc. How about using the following roles for Christ in direct ministry: butchers, hairstylists, retail store display designers, gas station owners, accountants, computer geeks, bicycle technicians, watchmakers, shoemakers, warehouse owners, tax preparers, and many, many more? People with these talents and resources are directly in service to Christ as they contribute to Love INC ministry and touch the needy in their midst. This provides a natural platform for sharing the reason why they are serving, which is to be Jesus to them, to introduce them to Him, and to invite them into the church community. I saw this in action in Michigan. Can this be done here in the Greater Twin Cities? Of course, if our vision is as big as Gods and as big as Love INCs track record with the Lord at the helm. What is keeping us back? We are limited because we dont have a Kingdom vision. We as churches do great work within our own circumscribed boundaries. However, the Lords work is community wide, nationwide, worldwide. It knows no boundaries. As we unite in the name of Jesus to offer what we can in ministry involving the bigger whole of the Body of Christ, we are embracing the Lords Kingdom vision and will Cont on pg 27

Pastors Perspective
Success In Ministry BY Jack Aiken
Every pastor, evangelist, singer, songwriter and author wants to succeed in their ministry, but all too often we have a view of success that is more related to the worlds value system than to Gods. When I entered the pastoral ministry over 20 years ago I had a distorted view of what success in ministry would mean. I dreamed of being a rising pastoral star, leading a burgeoning congregation, while remaining the humble servant who would, of course, give all the glory to God. What a bunch of egotistical nonsense that dream turned out to be! Thankfully, none of these egodriven fantasies have came true, and as time has passed, I have come to a clearer understanding of what Gods priorities are for His ministers and how He defines success. First, Gods priority for His ministers is not the pursuit of a ministry, or even worse, the pursuit of success in a ministry. God wants us to seek Him. Our first order of business must be to know God and develop a deep intimacy with Him. Jesus said Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you. We generally apply this principle to the necessity of pursuing the spiritual aspects of life in preference to the material, however, this principle would seem to apply to ministry as well. Paraphrasing the scripture we could say, Seek first the God of the ministry, and the ministry of God will be given to you, as He wills. Seeking success in ministry, or through ministry, without seeking God as a matter of first priority, has lead many a minister, prominent or not, to disaster through pride. When ministry success comes faster than the development of the ministers character, disaster is inevitable. Second, God defines success as faithfulness. The most important byproduct of knowing Gods nature and character is that the seeker will also begin to know Gods will as it specifically applies to himself. Every Christian has some understanding of Gods will for world evangelism and discipleship of believers, but what is not always clear is the individuals specific role in Gods master plan. However,God is more anxious to reveal His will to us than we are to have it revealed. God wants us to know what He desires of us, and we can know by the simple expedient of asking Him. The main reason we dont hear Gods answer is because we have already predetermined what the answer must be. In order to know Gods will, we must be open to all possibilities. No one will ever be successful in Gods eyes without knowing and doing His will. Everyone who is faithful to obey will be considered successful even if such obedience holds the minister in a place of obscurity rather than thrusting him upon the world stage. In Gods eyes, both are equally successful and the heavenly reward will be exactly the same: Well done you good and faithful servant, enter into the joys of your Lord. God rewards obedience, not prominence. Third, I have come to realize that a ministers greatest impact or success in the ministry, may not be a direct result of his own efforts, but through the ministry of those he has empowered for ministry. It is a good thing to encourage someone to seek God and wait on Him to open doors for them, but if you are already established in a ministry, God may be looking to you to open the door of ministry to others. I am in ministry today because someone recognized the gifts and callings of God in my life, and encouraged me to develop them. This encourager became my mentor, giving me many significant opportunities to exercise my gifts while they were yet immature and undeveloped. The greatest accomplishment of John the Baptist was the introduction of Jesus to the Jewish people. Jesus raised up a cadre of disciples whom He prophesied would do even greater things than He had done. Barnabas stands as a shining example of one who recognized and promoted the gifts and calling of another. Paul, the apostle, did not come into prominence in the church until Barnabas, responding to the leading of the Holy Spirit, sought him out, and brought him to Antioch from his hometown of Tarsus. Over time, Barnabas slipped into obscurity, while Paul became the greatest Christian missionary-evangelist and teacher the world has ever known. Paul, in turn, raised up a legion of other ministers to share and carry on his work. None of these mentors viewed those God called alongside as competitors. They recognized them as the means by which God would enable their own work to be expanded. If we who currently hold the reins of ministry could take the same attitude, we would realize that our greatest potential for success may lie in the raising up of others to share the ministry we now hold. Those we mentor should never be viewed as competition, but as continuation. To sum it all up, successful ministry always comes out of intimacy with God. Faithful obedience to the will of God is Gods ultimate definition of success. The will of God will almost always include investing freely in the ministry of others.

musical points and counterpoints. These are the tunes that make the hair on my neck stand up. A dynamic song can make an emotional, and many times a very spiritual connection. It is a very cool thing. I was talking to a recording engineer friend of mine about how these dynamic qualities are so often lost these days in a lot of the highly processed / radio friendly CDs that are produced. Songs are squashed by studio processing and compression just to make them sound very uniform and LOUD. They are then compressed again when broadcast on the radio or made into an MP3. The result? They are loud, sonically flat, and lacking emotion. From nearly the beginning of the song, the dynamic roller coaster is going nowhere. Could this be one reason why many current songs tunes lack real staying power? They sound good for a brief time, but then lose their appeal, like audio cotton candy. While many current radio friendly songs may be a bit more than just black and white, most are certainly not a full color audio experience, in my opinion. As drummers and as musicians, lets not let this happen. When playing live, allow yourself and all the other band members to have space in the mix just for them. What techniques and / or skills are needed to be a dynamic musician? I know that for a long time I thought any request for me to play dynamically was code for Youre playing too loud!. I now know this is not true. More than likely they wanted some sensitivity, some variation in the grooves I was using. It is not merely adjusting your overall playing volume, but also varying the dynamics in your playing all through a song. Remember that along with the overall dynamics, you also have control of the volume of each and every hit on your kit. Every note can (and should) be dynamic. Adjusting the pattern of these dynamic changes with any of your limbs on a rhythm you are playing is what makes a simple mechanical drum beat turn into a real grooveYOUR groove. Lets move on now to a few practical tips:

environment is critical to the bands overall sound. As drummers and musicians, we need to complement the songs, not overpower them. A drummers primary job is to keep the bands clock ticking in time, but nobody likes a loud obnoxious clock! To illustrate the dynamics concept, lets start with two analogies. Look at the design of a roller coaster. What is its goal? To make your legs wobble, spit you out, and build anticipation to do it all over again. This is accomplished by a combination of turns, lifts, and drops. Once in a while a huge gut-wrenching drop or whiplash turn is thrown in to mix it up. This is effective because it builds and releases tension and also adds a measure of unpredictability. Would the ride be just as fun if it just went down, or only turned the whole time? The second time you take that ride you would know what to expect. The mystery and thrill are gone. Do you see where I am going with this? Musically, there needs to be a variety of style, volume, and tempo to give a song life. This is true whether you are recording music or playing live. Dynamics are a critical part of music, and a large part of being a well-rounded musician. And what if a song were described in colors? Lets say that the melody and tempo are black and white. Dynamic playing gives this black and white song not only shades of gray, but other colors too. Without dynamics, a song is sterile...mechanical...flat. With a dynamic approach, a vocalist can hold back, then let it all out at key moments. Instruments ebb and flow, punctuating key

Drummer to Drummer: Playing Dynamically By Christopher Jorge

A band member I have played with for many years recently gave me one of the best compliments I have ever received as a drummer. He said, I really appreciate your sensitivity to what other members of the band are playing. You play what the music requires. In fact, you sometimes underplay a tune. I pondered this comment and thought, What is sensitivity in a musical context? I came to the conclusion that what we are really talking about is dynamics. In this article I want to define what dynamic music is, and provide practical ways in which a drummer (or any musician / singer) might grasp a dynamic approach to their gift. From a drummers perspective, I feel that honing this skill is much more important than just learning to play faster or more precisely. Most of the venues I have played at over the years have not been large. Being able to adjust dynamically to the playing

This takes a humble heart, but it is very hard for us as drummers and percussionists to really have any idea what our volume level is like by the time it tickles the ears of the audience. We must face the reality that we play a VERY dynamic acoustic instrument behind most all other audible things that are happening on the stage. Even those of us using in-ear monitoring systems are using a monitor mix that does not resemble what the house is hearing. Based on the feedback you receive, used electronic drum kits a few times, but you can change several things: I withhold a full endorsement due to their Practice dynamic playing with a current limitations. Lower your stage monitor volume. If you use a stage monitor, adjust its volume down a bit and see how it affects your playing.

Experiment. Learn the sensitivity of the electronic kits triggers. How hard do you have to hit to get the sound you want? How light can you hit the hi-hat or snare to make a sound? With this knowledge tucked away, you can play with as much emotion as the electronics will allow.

* Note to Non-Drummers Finally, I feel compelled to speak to those that may feel like their drummer is way off base in their on-stage playing volume. Acoustic drum kits do sound dramatically different depending on how hard they are played. Asking a drummer to reduce their playing volume to just above a light finger tap may please the other players and singers on stage, but to the audience (and the drummer) the playing will lack feeling and personality. Remember that we want...no, need dynamics! If the drummer seems to have a good handle on dynamics, try these possible solutions to your onstage drum volume: In-ear monitoring. Have the front line players / singers use an in-ear monitoring solution. Move the drums back. A few more feet between the front line folks and the drummer can make a big difference. Use a Plexiglas shield. This may help, but beware of sound reflecting off a smooth back wall. That may just create another sonic issue to deal with.

I hope these tips will help create a balance in your band that will allow everyones gifts to shine. Unity
Hungry For More Of You? By Dan Adler

Dan & Sandy Adler

the Sheep and Goats, is both one of the most frightening and one of the most motivating and exciting passages of scriptures that I know. Jesus is talking about the final judgment and how He will separate the sheep (good) from the goats (bad) as they stand before His throne. The core criteria in this passage that distinguishes a sheep from a goat is whether or not this person gave drink to the thirsty, fed the hungry, clothed the naked, visited those in prison and showed hospitality to the stranger or homeless. To those who didnt do those things, He says these terrifying words Depart from me, I never knew you! Those are words that I never want to hear - or to have anyone else hear, but theres more to this story. When both the sheep and the goats ask the Lord, when did they do or not do these things, the Lord says, As much as you did or did not do for the least of these my brethren, you did or did not do for Me. This is a big revelation to both the sheep and the goats in this story. But fortunately, you and I get the benefit of reading this story and taking its message to heart before we ever have to hear any of this first hand. So heres the big application for worshipers who are hungry for more of Him. If you really want to get close to Jesus, serve Jesus and love Jesus, According to this passage, the most direct way you can do that is to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the prisoner and house the homeless. In doing so you are feeding, clothing, housing and visiting Jesus Himself!! Wow! What a concept! Just think how many worship services have great sound systems and great guitar players and great bands and passionate singers singing songs seeking for more of Jesus, but never do any of those things as part of their own lives or the life of their congregation! Thats a bit of a sobering thought isnt it? But on the other hand, look at the awesome opportunities all around us to love and bless and serve Jesus every day!! My understanding is that this passage was the primary motivator behind the life of Mother Theresa and she found profound closeness to Christ in serving the poorest of the poor. This months Oikeo magazine is featuring an article about Love INC (in the name of Christ). This great national ministry is effectively getting churches in cities and towns around the country to work together in unity to minister to the poor. Our Heart of the City Worship band has had the privilege to partner with Love INC at many of their national conferences.

Ive noticed that a trend in a lot of modern worship services is to have a lot of seeking songs - songs like Hungry, We are Hungry, AllWho are Thirsty, Rend the Heavens, Let it Rain, More Love, More Power and many others like them. I sing many of those songs regularly and I really do like them. But once in a while, in some services Im in, songs like that can almost feel empty or despairing sort of like were waiting for something to happen to us that may or may not come true. Its like we have nothing we can do but sing about it or pray about it and if nothing happens after that service, were sort of absolved from responsibility about our lack. Now dont get me wrong, I think its a really good thing to have a hunger for more of the presence and power of God in our lives. So I would never discourage singing songs like these. But I think we might want to look at some Biblical passages that could enlighten us on our journey of seeking and that, perhaps, might inspire us regarding the songs we choose or write for our worship services. Matthew 25:31-46, the parable of

This is Love In the Name of Christ. Having witnessed the vitality of the mature Love INCs in Michigan, I yearn for this in our Greater Twin Cities area. I yearn not because I want more social impact programs but because I want to model Jesus, to present Jesus as Lord and Savior to those we reach, and to enfold them into healthy church communities where they can receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Love INC is not a humanist good works program, but an outreach in the name of Jesus Christ that models His love. Following the Leader By Jake Hillman

Keyboards

Jake Hillman

I have been reading articles for musicians and worship leaders for a while now. All of them have had some awesome information on leading worship, being a Christian musician and instrumental worship. As a keyboard player, I usually look for articles on well, keyboarding. I have the utmost respect for those who have been willing to share their knowledge with the rest of us who, lets admit, really, really need it. Although there is always great information about ways to use my instrument to create cool sounds, support the band, and key progressions, I began seeing a consistent pattern of articles focused on skill. While I believe that skill is extremely important (see my article in the last issue of Front Yard) there is one element that tends to get overlooked or passed by, and that is our ability to lead people into worship just by playing to God. Lately, I have really focused on what it means to be a worship leader. I have been on worship teams since I was 13 years old. Now, Im no senior citizen, but that really was a long time ago for me. Ever since I started playing on a worship team with my dad at the helm, I have always thought of a worship leader as someone who uses an instrument, whether it be their voice or something they play, as a shepherds rod to lead the sheep into worship. To me, leading worship meant that someone had to stand in front of the congregation and present songs for people to sing in order for them to enter into worship, like a pilot flying a plane, or a captain steering a ship.

However, I am happy to say that this view the song, but loves it when I quietly play in those quiet moments when our pastor has recently been changed. is praying or giving an alter call. Over time, bricks. If there were a light bulb over my head, it would have exploded! I realized that, when I worship the Lord, people want to follow. It wasnt about my pedestal or piano stool, or about being up on stage or playing with a great Piano/Pad sound I found last week in the churchs keyboard. It was about worshiping Christ in such a way that people wanted to follow me into that worship. From that point, worship has taken on a whole new meaning. I see the worship team as a group of Christians who just want to worship God together. Our job is not to show off our gifts and talents, but to I began to get frustrated with myself because I just could not understand how use them to give glory to the One who this all worked. Sure, I liked playing the gave those gifts to us. Then, as we use those gifts together as a unified team, piano and keys and creating music and people will join and follow us into His playing with other musicians. Help for your Music Dept.

At Christ Church, we've been using music from iClub since our first service last June. With around 15 people, we don't have any musicians, so we rely heavily upon good music to worship with during our services. Basically, we worship to soundtracks by putting together a playlist in iTunes. At first, we were very self conscious about that, but we realized that if most clubs around town were dancing and partying to a DJ's records, then we could worship to soundtracks. We jokingly tell people we have "world class" musicians lead our services. Quite frankly, it has worked very effectively for us, and now that we're used to it, we can tell very little difference in the worship between our service and others with live music. iClub has been a tremendous resource for us because of all the options that it provides. Whenever a new song comes out, I download the music-only version to use during our welcome, prayer and offering, and just before the preaching. We download the full demo for worship, and the split track for our altar calls. We take the lead sheets and/or transparency downloads and use them to project the words in Keynote (the Mac version of PowerPoint). We've created four playlists for our service. 1. Pre-Service: song for prayer and to create the atmosphere. 2. Worship Service 3. Altar Service: we have several songs styles depending on mood leading into altar 4. Last Service: this is an archive of what songs we've recently used Our typical playlist for worship service looks like this: 1. Intro/Welcome: I Want to Praise You-Music Only 2. I Want to Praise You-Demo 3. Dance Before You-Demo 4. Prayer: Dance Before You-Music Only 5. Offering: Rain Lord-Music Only 6. Rain Lord-Demo 7. Preaching Into: Rain Lord-Music Only (fade out) Basically, we hit play and let'er go. We have a portable PA system we got from David Hutton in Asheboro, and we run the output into our soundboard. There have even been times, that without a computer, we've simply run it from an iPod, and it has worked just as well. I guess I said all that to say, "Thank you." GROUP PURPOSE The first rule of safety is group purpose. If everyone is working toward the same goal of great song crafting and can be assured that the others have the same goals, interests and values, you have the beginning of a healthy climate for trust building. To help you determine whether you have group purpose, ask these questions: Do others believe I care about their songs? Do others trust my motives? What do I want from me? What do I want from them? What do I want for the relationship? whether it be a group or an individual. Apologize Humble yourself Contrast Use a do/dont statement Example: The last thing I wanted to do was communicate that I dont value your songs. I think you are very talented.

Name_________________________ What are your motives in this relationship? _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ What do you want for you? _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ What do you want for them? _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ How can you commit, recognize, invent and brainstorm together! Commitment If you do not totally commit to what you are doing, you will probably bail the first time adversity rocks your world. Those who stay in the boat and row eventually make it to shore

Unfortunately as artists, songwriters and musicians, we seem to struggle in this area. Many times when we do not like what we hear, dialogue comes to a halt and conversation becomes unsafe. This brings us to the second rule of safety: GROUP RESPECT The instant others perceive disrespect, the evaluation or conversation is derailed from its original intent: to craft great songs! Here are three skills that restore respect and purpose in any setting

Remember however, that we should never do someone the disfavor of being dishonest with them. This is where discretion comes into play. We have learned to consider each individual and where they are at, and in each situation, there is ALWAYS something positive about that individual and their talent that we can draw attention to while still encouraging excellence in their craft. Grant Seekers

CFG Classroom (Christian Foundation Grants) How to Fund Your Program Preliminary Information Foundations: At CFG, we define a private foundation as a nonprofit corporation or charitable trust, whose primary purpose is making grants to organizations or individuals for religious, scientific, educational, cultural, literary, or other charitable purposes. The foundations in CFGs database are those we believe will be open to religious-specifically Christian-grantmaking. A private foundation derives its money from a family, an individual, or a business entity. By contrast, a public charity or community foundation derives support from members of the

public. CFG publications and databases cover private foundations, corporate foundations, community foundations and other grantmaking public charities. Obtaining Grants: Grantmakers usually fund nonprofit organizations that qualify for public charity status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. To qualify, the organizations purpose must be charitable, educational, scientific, religious, literary, or cultural. Public schools, libraries, and other government organizations may also qualify as public charities. Furthermore, public charities: cannot benefit private individuals; and are restricted in their influence on legislation or political campaigns. Funders generally do not make grants

to ministries and other organizations whose tax-exempt status is not finalized; most will request proof of nonprofit status before they consider an application. Under federal law, foundations may make grants to nonqualifying individuals and organizations if the foundations follow very specific rules. The rules regarding expenditure responsibility require foundations to file various reports certifying that the funds were spent solely for the charitable purposes specified in the grant. Individual grantseekers should consider pursuing affiliation with an eligible (tax-exempt) organization. In such an arrangement, the affiliate organization acts as a sponsor or fiscal agent for your project. For further information, click here. Desirable Grantseeker Attributes: Grantmakers seek to determine whether the purpose of an organization or project is in sync with its mission or objectives. They will also look for the following: Most importantly, foundations determine whether the purpose of an organization or project is compatible with their specific mission; Evidence that it is reputable in the community; Competent and committed employees and board members; A viable project budget; Evidence that the program or organization addresses an existing

problem; Successfully obtaining grants in the past; Evidence of financial competency; and a history of successful recruitment of volunteers. Some foundations only support wellestablished churches and ministries. Check each foundations guidelines and recent grantmaking using the CFG database. This will help you determine whether a foundation supports new organizations. Types of Funding Given By Grantmakers: The projects and organizations grantmakers will fund vary dramatically. Some give any kind of support; others only extend building support, scholarships, or fund specific projects/ activities. The CFG database provides you with information about the areas each foundation funds. Look at the Types of Funding index in the print and electronic databases. Due to ongoing commitments, foundations sometimes limit the number of new proposals they will accept. Funders do not want grant recipients perpetually dependent on them. Insider Help: Generally, knowing someone inside the organization, such as an officer, board member, or even an employee, is helpful. However, it is unwise to put pressure on those who will review your proposal. The best thing you can do is demonstrate the credibility of your organization and project. If a foundation states that it does not accept unsolicited grant requests, explore the possibility that someone familiar with your organization is also affiliated with the foundation. If this is unsuccessful, consider the challenge of attracting the foundations interest over time. Beginning Your Foundation Search Searching within CFGs database, compile a list of foundations that appear likely to support your organization or project. Select funders by examining

their descriptive profiles and recent giving histories. Consider foundations that: (1) have historically supported similar projects; (2) have awarded the type of support you seek; (3) are present in your geographic area; and/ or (4) you are affiliated with through someone on your board. The next step is to thoroughly research the funders you identify. To research a foundations grantmaking patterns and trends, explore the foundations website. You may also look at its annual reports, Form 990, and printed guidelines. Diligent research pays off in two ways: first, it may save you from submitting a proposal to a funder who will not even consider your proposal; second, it will help you draft a better (well informed) proposal. Even if your proposal is not accepted, you want to leave a good impression. Next time, the result may be different. You will increase your chances of success by using the following three approaches in your research: The subject approach identifies grantmakers that have funded, or expressed an interest in funding, programs in your specific subject field. Examples of different subjects

include: the Bible, children, education, or mission work. The geographic approach identifies foundations that fund programs in a particular city, state, or region. Although some may give nationally or internationally, many grantmakers limit giving to specific geographic areas. The support type approach identifies foundations that provide specific types of support. Examples include: building funds, scholarships, or general operating support. By combining two or more of these approaches, your chances of success may be even greater. For example, if your program involves building homes for missionaries in Haiti, you may want to start by searching for foundations that have made grants for: mission work (subject), building shelters or homes (support type), and work in Haiti (geographic). Before Drafting the Proposal: Although drafting your proposal is an important part of the grantseeking process, be mindful that far more time and effort should be spent in developing the project itself. Making a Beginning: Describe your program in great detail; make sure you Continued on page 37

God Cares About Art

because, God cares about art. Look at the caring detail He gives to the direction of the making of the Tabernacle, or the temple Solomon built. I encourage you to re-read the description of the construction of the Tabernacle in the book of Exodus. God was very specific about how it should be designed and built. I like this little blurb that God says to Moses, Exodus 27:8 says You shall make it hollow with planks as it was shown to you on the mountain, so shall they make it. Get it? God showed Moses how to make the altar. He showed him how to make the altar! Man....that totally changes how I ask God to help me when Im writing a song or drawing a picture. God, could You show me like You showed Moses? Thanks for reading this. You can reach me at Look around....were making copies of His work all the time. No one is a better or more prolific artist. Check His use of color, composition, technique. If you can write a better or more powerful song than the reverberation of every star in the universe then by all means step up to see if you have what it takes

Cont from pg 35 include the projects goals and objectives. The entire concept of the project should be clear to the reader. Develop a timeline and estimate costs for personnel, overhead, goods, and services. Draft job descriptions for personnel. Finally, outline how you will evaluate the success of your project. Components of your proposal may include: Summary Organization Statement Statement of the Problem/ Situation Specific Plan Results and Evaluation Budget Supplementary Materials Conclusion Assembly of these various elements into a well-organized proposal is described in the Proposal Writing Course. Submitting the Proposal: A Stepby-step Approach: I. First Steps Increasingly, grantmakers are requesting brief letters of inquiry addressing how well your proposal and their interests correspond. A letter of inquiry should include-to a lesser extent-all the elements of a proposal. It should only be two pages, and should indicate what the next step will be (for example, that you will follow up with a phone call in 10 days). The objective of a letter of inquiry is to capture the funders interest so he requests a proposal. In some cases, foundations supply detailed instructions about what your proposal should include. Follow them. Some groups of grantmakers such as regional associations (i.e. Minnesota Council on Foundations) and the National Network of Grantmakers are now endorsing common grant application forms that grantseekers may (or must)

use when submitting proposals. Although it is unlikely that you will send the same proposal to multiple foundations on your list, you should consider creating a master proposal for your project or organization. This may save time, as you can simply customize it for each prospective funder. II. Useful Guidelines for the Master Proposal Make it well organized and concise. Use headings and sub-headings where appropriate. Use dark type on bright white paper. Do not bind-use clips or staples. Use page numbers. If the proposal is long enough, provide a table of contents. Use charts and statistics as appropriate, but realize they can disrupt the flow of the narrative. Place footnotes on the same page, not at the end of the document. Include only important attachments, press releases, news clippings, resumes, and appendices. III. Stylistic Approach When drafting the proposal, consider the beneficiaries point of view. This especially applies to the Problem and Plan sections. Avoid using jargon, slang, or acronyms. If you do, provide explanations. Use short, succinct sentences; no rambling run-ons. Keep paragraphs short. Use the active voice whenever practical. You may use abbreviations as appropriate. However, excessive abbreviation may lead to confusion or distraction. IV. Application Procedures Each grantmaker establishes its own application deadlines. Read and follow them closely. A missed deadline could render your proposal worthless. After a proposal is submitted it may 37 Front Yard Worship

be several months before a decision is made. Also, it may take several weeks after notification of the grant to receive the funds. Therefore, it is in your best interest to submit your proposal up to a year in advance of your proposed start date. When submitting the same proposal to multiple grantmakers, inform them of the other grantmakers considering the proposal. Always address your cover letter to an individual. If you cannot obtain the correct individuals name from CFG, call the foundation. Verify the spelling of names and addresses. Do not fax or e-mail your proposal without determining that this is acceptable. At this time, very few grant proposals are accepted via fax or e-mail. Double check to be sure all requested attachments are included. Commonly requested attachments include: A copy of your organizations 501(c)(3) determination letter from the IRS; A list of your organizations board members and their professional affiliations; A copy of your organizations budget and most recent audit; A brochure describing your agency.
