O little town of Bethlehem

...How still we see thee lie. Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by
Our own Milky Way galaxy is thought to contain about 200 billion stars; and were actually about average compared with other galaxies of which astronomers estimate there are approximately 100 billion to 1 trillion, Revd. Bob Politt of which our planet, Earth, is a mere spec. Recently it was estimated that our planet is inhabited by 7 billion people, each person being made up of a number of atoms almost too big to write =7 followed by 27 zeros! These particles hold together for approximately 650,000 hours to make up our lifetime before they fall apart. So, who are we, from where have we come and to where are we going? The ingredients of our chemistry can be found on the shelves of most chemist shops: some carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, a little calcium and a dash of sulphur. Very ordinary stuff and yet within the universe you are unique, each life is precious and each person is a miracle.

...Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight

...For Christ is born of Mary and gathered all above while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love

And so we live upon this planet, floating in a giant space, revolving every 23 hours 53 seconds, orbiting a star called the Sun every 364.25 days whos surface is 6000Ca degree nearer we burn up, a degree further away we freeze up. Our Earth rotates perfectly at an angle of 23 at a speed of 30kph. Another daily miracle.

...How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heaven...

For me this well known carol embodies the wonder of the Christmas message: God, who is beyond time and space, the Creator and Sustainer of all, loves us and sent his Son to us to tell us.

...O holy Child of Bethlehem descend to us, we pray. Cast out our sin and enter in be born to us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell. O come to us, abide with us our Lord Emmanuel.
Emmanuel means God is with us. He wants to be with you and wants you to know that you are with him and can never be separated from him. Today he still enters in to the lives of those who are willing to welcome him. May you know the real joy and peace of Christmas.

New hedging for Sherfield

As part of a wider campaign to stop the decline in hedge trees and encourage people to reconnect with healthy, local food on their doorstep, the Tree Council is giving Sherfield a free fruiting hedge. The hedging will be sited in a number of positions around the Village Green and will include: Hawthorn, Sloe, Raspberry, Gooseberry, Redcurrant, Blackcurrant, Blackberry, Rose, Elder, Quince, interspersed with 20 fruiting trees : Apples, Crab apples, Cherry, Damsons, Pear, Plums, Green Gage, Medlar, Rowan, Walnut, Mulberry and Hazel. Although the hedge is free, we have to plant it ourselves and for this we need as many willing volunteers as possible. The planting is scheduled to take place over the weekend of 26th and 27th of November and 3rd and 4th of December. If you could spare a couple of hours, and can bring your own spade, please phone Jane Jordan on 880852 or Bruce Batting on 882605.

Finally, from the whole LINK team we wish you a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

The Evergreens Club: Reported by May MacQueen Our meeting for November was a talk and floral demonstration by Ilene Iles. Ilene demonstrated arrangements using various receptacles including wine glasses, baskets and decorated plant pots. She used carnations, roses, freesia, gerberas and different types of greenery. Ilene also answered any questions from the members and gave some interesting tips and ideas. Ilene kindly donated the floral demonstrations she had made towards our raffle. Our next meeting is our Christmas Party on December 5th at 2pm.

Thoughts and prayers for Advent, Christmas and the New Year Isaiah 11 : 1 -3 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding. The Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. The NIV Bible Prayer for the Month. Loving God, it will soon be Advent and we will be anticipating Christmas again but perhaps for many people this year it will be a time of anxiety and not the usual bustle of preparation. The world around us is in turmoil and we wonder what it will mean for us. Two thousand years ago Mary and Joseph faced an equally uncertain future as they were forced to travel to Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus. You came into a world where there seemed no place for you but you were received with great joy by the rough shepherds who were the poor of that time. As we rejoice this year hear our prayers for all who have no cause for celebration, the hungry, the homeless, the unemployed, the out of work young people in our country and throughout the world. Open our hearts to hear again your word, to welcome in the living Christ and to reflect on our response to his call. Teach us to welcome Jesus into our lives and to rejoice in his love not just at Christmas but always. In your name we ask. Amen Prayer Points for December/January Pray for Paul White, one of our church members who is currently serving in Afghanistan; that he will be kept safe during his tour of duty and for Shirley his wife and Katharine their daughter as they face a lonely Christmas without him. Give thanks for the joy of the Christmas message Pray for those who could be alone at Christmas that their need of fellowship and friendship will be recognised by those around them, especially those who have been bereaved in the past year Pray for the homeless and those without food or water or shelter this Christmas that the world will not forget them. Pray for world leaders that they may work together to bring peace and prosperity to all peoples, especially those living in poverty in so-called third world countries.

From Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council

Closure of the Post Office
The parish council is actively working with the Post Office to ensure that the village has a facility when the current postmaster retires. There are several options for consideration and one of these could involve the post office moving to a different location within the village if it is unable to continue on its current site. In this event, it is likely that volunteers will be called upon to assist with the running of the service and the parish council would like to hear from anyone who would be able to spare some time to ensure that this valued village facility is not lost. All training will be free and in the village. If you think that you could spare a few hours a week, then please contact the parish clerk .

Digital Switchover
In February 2012 analogue television transmitted via Hannington will be switched off and those with analogue televisions will need to convert them to digital by using a Freeview box, a digital satellite service or digital cable. For older and disabled viewers who may find making the switch difficult, the BBC run Switchover Help Scheme is available to assist. If youre 75 or over or eligible disabled, the Help Scheme will write to you directly and in plenty of time to ask if you want help. For more information on the Switchover Help Scheme visit helpscheme.co.uk or call free on 0800 40 85 900.

Next meeting
The parish council will be holding its next meeting on Wednesday 14th of December at 7.30pm in the Sherfield Park Community Centre in the Taylors Farm ward of the parish and would like to extend an invitation to residents there to come along and meet their councillors and see them in action. There is a regular public participation session at all council meetings when residents may ask questions on the agenda items. The following meeting will be on Wednesday 11 January at 7.30pm in the Liddell Hall all welcome! Roy Best 1927 2011

It was testament to Roy that it was standing room only at his funeral. To so many people he was Mr Stratfield Saye. For 83 years he so generously gave his time in serving the Village he loved. Alongside farming, family and friends, the Village was his passion. Roy was born into a family of hardworkers. His parents lived and worked at the shop at West End Green and it was here that Roy was born. He started helping the familys bread baking business and whilst not making or delivering bread he worked as a farm hand. This sparked his love of farming and with his typical positive attitude and graft he became an accomplished farmer, becoming Chairman of Wokingham Agricultural Society and establishing the four farms that his family run today. It is impossible to overstate Roys lasting impression on the Village. He would grasp the nettle when others would not. He made things happen. He sat on the Stratfield Saye Parish Council for 46 years and was Chairman until he died. In the 1960s he was a District Councillor. He was Church Warden at St Marys and, even when unwell, he instigated plans to refurbish the Churchs exterior which will hopefully be one of his many legacies. He was involved in the James Christmas Charity and the Stratfield Saye Educational Foundation. The list could go on as he tirelessly did so many small things that meant so much to people. In every case he expected no credit. Roys passing is a huge loss to the Village. However, the Village has been blessed with having been graced by Roy for 83 years. He will not be forgotten. Our thanks to Mike Shearn for this contribution.

Special Advent Communion at St Leonards

Once again we will offer short mid-week communion services led by Revd. Sammie Armstrong during the weeks leading up to Christmas. Advent means coming especially a coming that is awaited. It has a double focus, past and future. We affirm that Christ has come, that He is present in the world today, and we are reminded that He will come again in power. The rich symbolism and meanings of Advent will help us challenge, as well as value and enjoy, the world Christ comes to save. During the busyness of Christmas use these brief services to think about the why of Christmas. Wednesdays at 11.00 - 11.30am 7th December, 14th December, and 21st December.

Sanquilo House, Wildmoor Lane

Dear Readers, Can you help? I am a garden historian researching on behalf of the Hampshire Gardens Trust. Recently my attention has been drawn to the gardens of the house now known as The Loddon School, but previously the Rectory/St Leonard's/Drayton House. The period of time which interests me is from about 1930 to 1946 when the house was owned by an American family from Manila called Marsman. During this time they updated the house, redesigned the gardens and renamed the house Sanquilo House. I wonder if, through your magazine I could ask whether there is anyone in Sherfield on Loddon who remembers the Marsmans or perhaps had a relative who worked there? During the war it was used as a convalescent home by the Red Cross. Contact:- Valerie Joynt on web site: valerie.joynt@joynt.co.uk or by phone: Tel: 01256 770506 if you can help.

THE WOMENS INSTITUTE

Reported by Ilene Iles Our November Meeting consisted of our Cookery Competition which took place at the Village Hall in the morning and was judged, once again, by Mrs Elizabeth Frewin. There were 49 entries and Dee Bulpitt remarked how delighted she was that so many Members had taken part. The Cups were presented by Dee during the Business Meeting in the afternoon Highest Individual Score (4 entries tied) - Ilene Iles (Victoria sponge) and Highest Total Marks Tess Morris. Mrs Frewin remarked on the high standard of the entries. Dee opened our Meeting at 2 p.m. Jerusalem was sung, the Minutes of the previous Meeting read, correspondence dealt with, the Treasurers Report given by Margaret Lee in Evelyn Holdaways absence and other matters covered. Tess Morris gave thanks to Val on the Members behalf for the very enjoyable and interest trip to Bletchley Park. The Business Meeting closed at 2.55 p.m. This was followed by a social afternoon in which 4 Members (Pat Thompson, Dee, Val and Ilene) read out their favourite poems and we then seated ourselves round tables for a quiz Dee had prepared on the topic of food (multiple answers provided). This was won by Tess Morris table! A delicious tea followed and the raffle was drawn. NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY, 7TH DECEMBER 2011 AT 2 P.M. ENTERTAINMENT WITH A CHRISTMAS THEME With Vera Hughes and David Weller CHILDREN SOCIETY COLLECTION BOXES The collection of the boxes will be in February as usual. I would be grateful if boxholders could get their boxes to St. Leonards Church on Sunday 5th February, 2012, but no later than 12th February. Report by Gill Fearon We have all been reading The Hypnotist by Lars Kepler, a creepy and compulsive crime thriller according to a quote on the dust jacket. Our recent meeting was spent discussing the book. Come face to face with fear itself, it says above the title of the book and it was with some trepidation that we embarked on the story. Lars Kepler is a pseudonym for the husband and wife team of Alexander and Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril, both Swedish and in their 40s. The story begins in Stockholm with the horrific murder of a man, his wife and young child, with an older teenage boy seriously injured with life threatening stab wounds. He quite possibly knows the identity of the murderer and the race is on to find out who committed this terrible atrocity and also to protect his older sister whose whereabouts are unknown. A psychiatrist who once practised hypnotism is asked to help by hypnotising the boy. Due to a bad experience ten years previously, he is reluctant to help, but is persuaded to do so. This act unlocks a series of events which cannot be predicted. The story is full of twists and turns and contains some graphic images, psychological abuse, revenge and gang violence. Out of 17 of us present (and one absentee who gave her opinion), only three of us actually enjoyed the book, finding it difficult to put down! A few hated it, but the majority were ambivalent about it. One complained of gratuitous violence, but it was pointed out that the book was based on a psychiatrist as one of the main characters and his involvement with severely disturbed people. A view was expressed that this book highlighted a lack of investment in psychiatric hospitals in Sweden where dangerous people are being let out into the community something which is happening in this country too. Discussion led to the incidence of mental health problems and suicide in Sweden, where the long winter and lack of sunlight affects health, although a member who once lived in Sweden assured us that most of the Swedish people she met were happy and friendly! It was interesting to have read a book which provoked such controversy. Our next two meetings for the year are our annual telephone quiz organised by another group through our HQ, and then our Christmas meal at the Four Horseshoes.

Sherfield and District Gardening Club

We will be publishing our 2012 schedule this month. Once again we have many interesting speakers and garden visits including the return of Ray Broughton in April and for the first time, Paulo Arrigo of Franchi Seeds in February and October. Anyone interested in gardening will be most welcome to join us at the Sherfield Village Hall at 7:30pm There will be no talk on Monday 19th December. Instead we have our Christmas party. Always a fun event with a light hearted quiz, nibbles and possibly a glass of wine or two. On Monday 16th January Derek Leary will talk about Gardens open for Charity. Derek has been a guitarist in a rock band; toured on stage as a cabaret act with is wife and lately performed as a bit part actor in various T.V. productions and films. However, his real love is gardening. His talk will take us on a tour of various Yellow Book gardens accompanied with a digital slide show.
