Automatic Vehicle Locator Using GPS and GSM (or) GPS Based Vehicle Tracking and Security System

Abstract

Global Positioning System, usually called GPS, is the only fully-functional satellite navigation system. A constellation of more than two dozen GPS satellites broadcasts precise timing signals by radio, allowing any GPS receiver (abbreviated to GPSr) to accurately determine its location (longitude, latitude, and altitude) in any weather, day or night, anywhere on Earth.

GPS has become a vital global utility, indispensable for modern navigation on land, sea, and air around the world, as well as an important tool for map-making and land surveying. GPS also provides an extremely precise time reference, required for telecommunications and some scientific research, including the study of earthquakes. GPS receivers can also gauge altitude and speed with a very high degree of accuracy. The United States Department of Defense developed the system, officially named NAVSTAR GPS (Navigation Signal Timing and Ranging Global Positioning System), and launched the first experimental satellite in 1978. The satellite constellation is managed by the 50th Space Wing. Although the cost of maintaining the system is approximately US$400 million per year, including the replacement of aging satellites, GPS is available for free use in civilian applications as a public good.

A GPS reciever placed in a car can recieve signals from these satellites and will calculate the exact location of the car in terms of latitude and longitude. This data can be sent to a owners computer that can monitor the location. A GSM modem can be integrated into this project for providing security and remote control. The current location of the car can be found out by sending an SMS. The car can also be disabled by sending an SMS.

GSM & GPS BASED VEHICLE SECURITY AND ACCIDENT NOTIFICATION SYSTEM

ABSTRACT

Now a day millions of vehicles populates our road every day. Our project, which combines the GPS and GSM technologies for the purpose of vehicle security and accident notification.

The GPS- GSM based vehicle security and accident notification system is such a state of the art automobile accessory. This system can protect the automobile from being it stolen. Also in case of any accident, the accident notification subsystem automatically sends SMS (short message service) messages to the ambulance and also to some predefined telephone numbers such as vehicles owner and police station etc.

This kind of automobile accessory is very relevant in todays world. Because the traditional vehicle security systems are becoming outdated, the intruders can easily break into a vehicle if the vehicle is using an ordinary alarm system. In the case of the GPSGSM based security system, even if the intruder manages to get in the vehicle, the position of the automobile is continuously monitored. This data is sent to the preset telephone numbers via SMS by the system. From this data police can easily trace the intruder.

Here we are using GPS to locate the accurate location of the vehicle and the GSM is used to communicate with the user for security needs. The micro controller is programmed to perform the desired operation.

The GSM mobile interfaced to deliver commands to Micro controller, it extracts data from the GPS receiver. The Micro controller processes the data extracted from the GPS receiver and operation is performed as per the user needs.

This system offers a high level security with precession and also offers access from any where in the globe.
