Examples of Local Projects that Accomplish SoundVision Goals

Wallace Dam Fishway, Wallingford, in process


 Save the Sound is in the process of coordinating the installation a Denil fishway
across Wallace Dam on the Quinnipiac River which will allow fish to pass over
the dam and swim upstream.
 When completed, the project will open eight miles of breeding habitat for
migratory fish that have been blocked for the last 100 years. Construction is
anticipated to begin in September 2011.

West River Tidal Restoration, New Haven, in process


 Save the Sound is in the process of coordinating the installation of three self-
regulating tide gates to allow more tidal fluctuation in the West River, which is
currently restricted by timber gates.
 When completed, the project will open up 5.8 miles of fish passage and restore
more than 50 acres of marsh habitat. Construction is anticipated to begin in fall
2011.

Pond Lily Dam Removal Planning and Design Project, New Haven, in process
 The Town of Woodbridge, TNC, and American Rivers are working in partnership
to complete the planning and design work needed to remove Pond Lily Dam in
the West River.
 When completed, the project will restore 1.7 miles of river connectivity and 60
acres of spawning habitat for native fish. There is currently a steepass fishway on
Pond Lily Dam, which may be removed and used to restore fish passage at
another dam site if Pond Lily Dam is removed.

Neighborhood Steward Teams Program, New Haven, in process


 Solar Youth is engaging 62 youth in an after-school program to investigate the
local ecology of their community, identify environmental issues that affect the
health of people and the natural environment, and seek solutions.
 Six Steward Teams will be created to work in four locations within walking
distance  to  one  of  New  Haven’s  three  main  rivers  that  flow  into  the  New  Haven  
Harbor.
 When complete, the youth will teach what they have learned and accomplished to
others through a public education project.
Low Impact Development in the Lower Housatonic River Valley, in process
 The  Housatonic  Valley  Association  will  expand  Low  Impact  Development  “green  
infrastructure”  activities  in  10  coastal  communities  to  reduce  pollution  flowing  
into the Housatonic River and Long Island Sound.
 The 10 communities in the Lower Housatonic and Naugatuck River and Estuary
include Monroe, Newtown, Southbury, Oxford, Seymour, Ansonia, Derby,
Shelton, Stratford, and Brookfield.

Little River Tidal Restoration, 2009


 Ducks Unlimited, Inc. restored hydrology to approximately 100 acres of tidal
marsh in New Haven County.
 Removed restrictions to tidal flow and restored an internal meandering tidal creek
system.

Organic Landscaping for Non-point Source Pollution Control, 2009


 Northeast Organic Farming Association of Connecticut helped homeowners
overcome barriers to transitioning from chemical to organic landscaping.
 Reduced pesticide and nitrogen loading on Long Island Sound by increasing the
acreage of organically managed land in Connecticut.
