Spraying crops less effective in windy weather

KAREN WATKINS

praying should not be done in windy conditions as this would cause spray drift and make the applications quite useless as some of the spray would not be effective on the crop. This would actually be quite silly as his input cost would be for a less effective dosage, according to MEC of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gerrit van Rensburg (Spray drift headache, Bulletin December 1). Mr Van Rensburg said that should transgressions occur, the Department of Health or the health officials of the specific municipality should be contacted with evidence to investigate. He said most wine farms are part of the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) system and their spraying records should be kept updated to qualify as member of this system. Should it be necessary, the records could be accessed by the investigating officers to see what sprays have been used, when and in what quantity. However, he warns, it should be noted that some people are more allergic and susceptible to chemicals and will react more profusely than

others, he said, references to skin irritation, dishwashing liquid, pollen, as examples. This does not mean that any application overdose was done, said Mr Van Rensburg. Producers are urged to use products only as prescribed by the manufacturer. Farmers have the right to protect their crops, but must do so within the ambit of the relevant legislation. In cases where residential areas border on working farms, good communication will make for good neighbours, said Mr Van Rensburg. He stressed that vineyards do need agro-chemicals to protect them against fungi and pests, unless you produce organically. However, only registered substances can be used, taking into account the prescripts on the label (when and how to apply). And due to the high cost of agrochemicals, farmers will not double dose or spray unnecessary. To report spray drift, contact Leon du Toit of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on 021 944 1430 /31/32. The City Healths Air Quality Management Unit can also be contacted on 021 590 1419 for investigation.
