BlaNk So what do you do when your mind is just a blank and it is time to write a Ravings!!! A number of things are going on, but are still a little too fresh at this point to write about. They need to simmer and stew a bit before serving up to the public. Many years ago (nine maybe) I was able to use a brilliant article by an Australian writer on how to get your adult children to move out of the house. It was very witty and funny as heck!!! Unfortunately, getting good substitute writers to fill in for you is pretty hard to do. That Musings lady has offered to fill in from time to time, but I wouldnt want her stuff printed anywhere. So ... out of desperation I called upon my best friend to see if he might be able to help me out and being the good boy that he is he said WOOF!!! So here he is!! Hi there, my name is The Jet, and I belong to a wonderful man called Mikie. I also live with a strange little old lady, who has this even stranger liking for three fat creatures that I have to share the house with. Mikie is my best friend cause he doesnt like those fat creatures either!! Mikie is so wonderful because ... Hey thats not a full dish ... You got to put more food in there than that!!! You could stand to lose a few pounds yourself!! If he wasnt my best friend, why, I would gladly chew his leg off. Even when they are on a diet, the fat creatures get three meals a day and I only ever get two!! What about that, big shot friend?? Although, Mikie is a real tight wad with the kibble, he does regularly take me for walks in the woods. I love walking in the woods!! Hey slow poke ... why are you stopping and just looking at trees?? I have squirrels to chase and I cant just hang around in one place while you snooze!! Id just leave and go off on my own, but the coyotes might get him. More importantly, the coyotes might get ME!! The kibble police can look after himself!! The other nice thing about Mikie is that in the winter time he likes to light fires. Dont worry ... if the kibble doesnt improve the Fire Marshall is definitely getting a call. I just love sitting right in front of the stove with a blazing fire going. I am so happy that I even let one of the fat creatures share some of the space. Hey Mikie ... the fire is dying down ... get over here!! My best friend Mikie would be just about perfect if it wasnt for the Strange Lady and the Fat Creatures!!! Thanks Jet. The end!! 800

With the absence of the Sussex Corner Rink building many residents have been wondering if the Carnival would be posponed this this year. We are happy to announce that the Sussex Corner Winter Carnival is a GO, scheduled for the Weekend of February 17-18. The plan is to continue with previous years events on a hand flooded ice surface and a carnival-style tent from our local commercial tent rentals. In the event that the weather isn't cooperating we have expanded the Sussex Corner Amazing Race competition to fill in the afternoon. Those teams who participated last year will be sure to return for the challenge again this year. The race will run continually throughout the afternoon on Saturday for teams of two (one being over the age of 18). This event consists of a series of outdoor challenges completed while being timed. Last year proved to put a smile on the faces of the contestants and spectators alike. We had great success with the addition of two new outdoor activities last year and are happy to have John McNair from Outdoor Elements leading a snowshoe trek Friday evening as well as Tim & Dawn Whitters of Simply for Life leading a cross country ski through the beautiful nature trail Saturday morning. All the favourites once again - family skate, games with Pete and Penny the Penguins, ever popular horse and sleigh rides, maple candy on the snow and face painting. There will be a limited canteen including hot dog & hamburger BBQ throughout the day as well as our famous fireside Seafood chowder between 5-7pm. Cake and hot chocolate will be served at 6:30pm free of charge, while finishing the evening with our spectacular fireworks display at 7pm. This will be the fourth year for the Corner Cup Hockey Tournament and we are hoping for another year of friendly competition between the teams with games scheduled from Thursday evening to the finals Saturday at 5pm. If you would like to register your team of five players or receive more information you can e-mail the Village at village@sussexcorner.com or contact Ben Whalen at 433-4394. Registration is $50 per team. We are on the hunt once again for the best snow sculpture and snowman. All Village residents are invited to compete by creating a snow sculpture in your own yard and register by calling the village office 433-5184. Join in on the fun of building your most creative snowman in Sullivan Park during the Carnival with judging Saturday evening. All winners during the Carnival will be entered in our grand prize draw which is a night at Adairs Wilderness Lodge, including meal vouchers graciously donated by Larry and Ida Adair.

FEBRUARY IS
Sealed with an X
People often use the symbol X to represent a kiss at the end of a love note or card but dont understand how this letter came to be associated with the meaning of a kiss. It is believed the custom dates back to when the majority of the public was illiterate. The X or a cross was used as one would use their signature today, to mark a persons word to abide by a contract or agreement from a Christian perspective. The X was often then kissed as a further symbol of honesty. Eventually, the X itself came to represent a kiss and no longer just a signature. Why the letter O came to represent a hug is not as widely understood. Some say that it is because an O is a shape of hugging arms. Others say it is what Jewish immigrants would use as their own signature, similar to the X, so they were not mistaken for Christians.

that commemorates love and romance and also the patron Saint Valentine. The history of St. Valentine is shrouded somewhat in mystery, and there are beliefs that many different people went by the name St. Valentine. One such individual was a holy priest who served in Rome, Italy. Some historians surmise that he was jailed for defiance during the reign of Claudius II, sentenced to death, and became a religious martyr. Pope Gelasius marked February14 as a celebration in honor of his martyrdom in 496 AD. Today, the Catholic church recognizes at least three different martyred saints named Valentine or Valentius. So how did St. Valentines Day transform from a religious holiday into one far more secular? During the third century in Rome, Claudius II decided that single men served better as soldiers if they were single and had no attachments at home in the way of a wife and family. Thusly, he outlawed marriage. St. Valentine didnt agree with the views and reportedly performed marriages for young lovers in secret. It is this which may have propelled Valentines Day to be more about love than religious obligation.

Another legend says that Valentine himself authored the first Valentine card. It has been rumored he fell in love with a woman -- the jailers daughter -- while in prison and sent her a letter. He signed it, from your Valentine. No matter the origins of the holiday, today St. Valentines Day has become a day where love is celebrated. Lovers send each other cards and tokens of their affections. It is customary to go out for dinner and send flowers. Chocolates and roses seem to go hand-in-hand with Valentines Day events. Although certain customs have become commonplace, some customs of Valentines Day have fallen by the wayside. One such custom is the drawing of names that took place in the 18th century. Names of men and women (equal numbers of each) were placed into two different containers. A lottery of sorts took place where one mans name was drawn and matched with a womans name. The people called were called Valentines, and the pairing was considered a good omen of these couples marrying later on. Another lost custom was of a man wearing a paper heart with the person he loveds name written on it. The heart was pinned to his sleeve, which gave way to the expression, wearing ones heart on ones sleeve. A woman could do the same type of thing by wearing a charm known as a love-badge near her heart. Where now we send out mass-produced Valentines Day cards, original Valentines were handmade and personalized letters. Within them individuals could write their exact sentiments to a loved one. On February 14th, people nipped by the love bug partake in many customs to show their love. How will you show that special someone you care this year?

I so enjoy reading your articles and cant wait to see what you write about in each issue. This last one made me laugh Debbie, as you describe the missing suet from your feeders. A very good friend of mine has been having the same problem. He set up a trail camera on his deck and caught the creature red handed. I am sending you a couple pictures so you can get a chuckle too. These little guys are so sweet you cant help but love them, even if they do steal like little robbers. We had a pair of them this fall that devoured our grapes and plums. We set up a camera as well to catch the action. As much a problem they can be to us, they are still one of Gods little creatures and we just have to learn to live with them. Thanks for the great reads. Theresa McCready, Youngs Cove. 323

Is there anyone who doesnt love Garfield? You know, the big orange cat whose motto in life is All I do is eat and sleep. Eat and sleep. Eat and sleep. There must be more to a cats life than that. But I hope not. Well, I have three cats, and though they may not have Garfields attitude two of the three are definitely a mite, well, tubby. Not huge, but certainly overweight. They have never had lasagna, but being indoor cats they do not get a lot of exercise. Plus we have normally free fed all of our cats. The dry cat food and lots of fresh water stay out all the time and are refilled whenever empty. This has worked well for previous cats, but obviously is not the correct process for these ones! I have often wondered how I could reduce the food intake for one or two cats without starving the other and have never come upon a workable solution, or at least not one that didnt have me policing each cat so as to ensure no one eats two meals while someone else gets little or nothing. But . . . I now have a plan. After much research on cat foods - protein levels, weight control vs not, etc - and some pondering, I started a new feeding regime. No more food out all the time. There are now three meal times, and only three meal times, and at all other times the food is put away out of the reach of little paws. The dish goes down for a half hour when I get up, a half hour at supper time and another half hour at bedtime. They can eat all they want during those time periods, but when the timer goes, the dish goes! Wisely, I started this on a workday so that I did not have to listen to the pitiful cries of a starving cat. Smudge has always been VERY vocal when the food dish even begins to approach empty, so a missing food dish definitely warrants complaint. Loud and often! Within a few days, however, even she seems to have adapted and while there are still moments of distress they are dwindling. And not because she is prostate, weak from hunger, but because she has learned it does no good. It has only been a couple of weeks, too soon to tell if it is going to result in any weight reduction. Crossing my fingers. Meanwhile for all you non-morning people who hate to get up: Ill rise, but I wont shine. ~ Garfield. 801
