Accelerated programs Missouri State also offers accelerated masters programs. Masters degrees mean marketability! Just ask the more than 2.25 million students enrolled in graduate schools across the U.S. With more and more people competing for employment these days, a masters degree might just give you the competitive edge that you need to land your next job. Based on information acquired from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Council of Graduate Schools reports that the number of occupations that typically require a masters degree will increase by approximately 20% from now until 2016. Of the 30 occupations projected to grow at the fastest rates, five generally require a masters degree. Additionally, in 2007, among individuals 25 years of age and older, the unemployment rate for those with a masters degree as their highest degree was 1.8% compared to 2.2% for those with only a bachelors degree, and 4.4% for high school graduates.

Affordable Education
Missouri State students have received quality education at a great value for more than 100 years. Over the decades not only have academic options increased, but also the wide range of services offered to students. Included in the student fees are additional services such as office visits to a physician in our health and wellness center, admission to most on-campus NCAA events, campus shuttle service, e-mail and Internet access, recreation facilities, student security and tutorial help through the writing and counseling centers.

Financial Assistance
To qualify for federal nancial aid, you must either: Be admitted as a graduate student into a specic graduate program (major); OR Be admitted as a graduate, nondegree seeking or post-baccalaureate student taking courses required for teacher certication based on an evaluation of your credentials by the Missouri State University Office of Teacher Certication; OR Be admitted as a graduate, nondegree seeking or post-baccalaureate student working on prerequisite coursework to gain admittance into a masters degree program based on an evaluation of your credentials by the director of that program. To begin the nancial aid process, you need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You may pick up the FAFSA application in the Missouri State University Ofce of Financial Aid, Carrington Hall, Room 101; however, we strongly recommend completing the FAFSA on the Web at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Complete the FAFSA application in time for it to be received by the processor before March 31. Applications will be accepted after this date, but funds may be limited. Please make sure you list the Missouri State University school code (002503) on your FAFSA. Completing the FAFSA online is much faster, more accurate and allows for corrections and renewal applications to be led more efficiently. Why did you choose Missouri State for graduate school? ac: I attended Missouri State for my undergraduate degree and wanted to come back. I liked how the compact campus was a micro-community within the larger community of Springfield. I knew the professors gave one-on-one attention if a student needed it. My program also had a great combination of day and evening courses and allowed me to specialize electives to meet my work needs.

Why did you choose to earn a second masters degree? ac: When I was finishing my MBA, I realized I was more passionate about my concentration area than I was about the business courses I was taking. After speaking with my MBA advisor, I realized combining two different programs would really give me an edge when I finally go into the workforce full-time. Because some overlap is allowed, I was able to extend my assistantship to cover the second degree and integrate online courses to free up some more time for other interests. With the second degree, I hope to combine my two areas of interest and find a niche that really works for me. Being able to take classes across varying disciplines to meet my degree requirements really helped me choose to pursue a second degree instead of simply taking the occasional course.

How have you benefited from online courses? ac: Everyone always talked about the flexibility of online classes, and they werent kidding! Online courses allow me to balance my time and accommodate my work schedule and my social life. Online courses give me more time at home, which is something I appreciate. Theres a lot of self-discipline that goes into taking classes online, and that has helped me integrate the learning process into my daily life. And believe it or not, online courses have also given me a deeper appreciation for textbooks. I previously used textbooks simply as supplemental material to the traditional classroom lecture, but I feel online classes help me realize how important textbooks really are in the learning process.

Do you have the opportunity to conduct original research and work one-on-one with your professors? ac: The opportunity to do original research is definitely there. My degree had a thesis option, but I was able to incorporate some original research into my seminar class.
ms:

Where is the best place for a graduate student to study on campus? ac: I like complete quiet when I study, so Meyer Librarys study rooms are great. I dont have to reserve them, just find an open one. If I feel the need to people watch while Im studying, Ill go to the Student Union or the atrium in Strong Hall.
ms:

What are the advantages of a graduate assistantship? ac: The fee waiver! Going to college and having someone else pay for it is fantastic. The assistantship also allows me to have a job that understands my education needs when my schedule needs to be adjusted week-to-week and semester-to-semester. The assistantship gave me experience for my future career path and really helped give me a better understanding of what I want to do after I finish school.

Best place in Springfield to get a cup of coffee? ac: Im a Starbucks purist and I always like my Venti Light Raspberry White Chocolate Mocha Frapaccino to go!

Best place in Springfield to relax? I like to go downtown to the Springfield Brewing Company (the Brew Co), have a drink, play pool and listen to the live music. All of downtown is being renovated though, so there are always new places to go. The Moxie is a great place to see an art-house flick and forget about the stresses of life.

What are the Top Three reasons to come to Missouri State? ac: The campus community, option to take classes in multiple disciplines, and the variety of courses offered.

Graduate Assistantships
Missouri State offers approximately 500 graduate assistantships! What are graduate assistantships? In a nutshell, you work 20 hours a week for the University and you receive a fee waiver for tuition, as well as a stipend. Sound good? Read on.

Graduate assistantships are available to aid students with course fees and expenses. As a graduate assistant, you will work an average of 20 hours per week beginning the week before classes and ending the day of commencement in an office or department on campus. You may apply to do administrative tasks, assist professors with research or teach introductory-level freshmen courses, depending upon your qualifications and previous work experiences. The minimum stipend for a graduate assistantship in the 2009-10 academic year (nine months) is $7,340.

Requirements for an assistantship: 3.00 GPA on undergraduate course work, last 60 hours of course work or nine hours of graduate course work. Must be enrolled in a minimum of six hours of graduate-level course work (500800) during the fall and spring semesters. Summer assistants must enroll in at least three hours of graduate credit.
Note: Some departments/offices may require graduate assistants to take more than six hours of course work.

What brought you to Missouri State for graduate school? ab: First of all, admission with a graduate assistantship surely made me interested in Missouri State. Secondly, the research profile of the faculty in the Physics, Astronomy and Materials Science Department helped me finalize my decision.

What are the advantages of a graduate assistantship? ab: The first major advantage is the tuition waiver. As an international student, this is an extremely helpful step. A graduate assistantship requires 20 hours of work per week. This really helps to spend ample amounts of time with both my research and my courses. In addition, these duties train an international student in the work culture of this country. To put all the pieces together, it gives financial stability.

Do you have the opportunity to conduct original research and work one-on-one with your professors? ab: I certainly have the opportunity to conduct original research, as my advisor had strongly encouraged me to formulate my own research problem. My advisor and co-advisors help me generously when I face any hurdle. I am really fortunate to have one-on-one discussions with not only my advisors, but with my co-advisors as well. In addition to these personal meetings, we have regular, weekly group meetings to get a feel for research in different fields.

Where is the best place for a graduate student to study on campus? ab: In my opinion, its the basement floor of the library. Not only is it pretty silent, but I also find most of the subject books there its easy to quickly pick up a reference book. This saves some useful time in the final days before the exam.

What are the Top Three reasons to come to Missouri State? ab: For me, I would say the high acceptance rate, good research facilities and courses, and the availability of a research assistantship.

Continue the Tradition This scholarship is a program for out-ofstate students who are the children and grandchildren of Missouri State University graduates. To qualify, students must be classified as non-residents for fee purposes; must be enrolled full-time (9 hours for graduate students); must have at least one parent, step-parent or grandparent who is a graduate of Missouri State (with an associates, bachelors, masters or specialist degree) and be a member of the Alumni Association. In addition, recipients must be admitted to a graduate degree program and have an undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or higher.

Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded by various offices and departments on campus, as well as through the Midwest Student Exchange Program. Please check with your department regarding scholarship opportunities.
Missouri Outreach Graduate Opportunity (MOGO) Scholarship The MOGO Scholarship provides a partial remission of out-of-state fees for full-time graduate students who are not Missouri residents. This scholarship is available to students admitted into an eligible graduate program. The MOGO Scholarship has a value of three-fourths of the nonresident graduate student fees for 9 credit hours (5 credits hours in the summer). For the 2008-09 academic year, the value was $1,377 per fall and spring semester and $765 in the summer. The scholarship amount will be adjusted annually when the Missouri State University Board of Governors approves changes to the student fee schedule. No application is required. Once a student meets the eligibility criteria, the scholarship will automatically be offered. The MOGO Scholarship cannot be combined with other forms of University aid, including scholarships, graduate assistantships or fee waivers. Students in the following programs are not eligible: Administrative Studies, Nurse Anesthesia, Business Administration, Physical Therapy, Computer Information Systems, Physician Assistant Studies, Defense and Strategic Studies, Educational Leadership Cooperative Program with the University of MissouriColumbia The Basil and JoAnn Boritzki Endowment Scholarships The Basil and JoAnn Boritzki Endowment annually awards scholarships to two fulltime graduate students, one male and one female, in recognition of their academic achievements. To be eligible, a student must have the intention of entering the teaching profession in publicly supported educational institutions, either K-12 or college; have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or above; and be enrolled full-time during the academic year that the award is given. Aileen and Keith Ford Endowed Scholarship Eligibility: Must be a first-year graduate student who earned an undergraduate degree at Missouri State University. Consideration will be given to performance at the undergraduate level of study, academic potential to successfully complete the program in which the applicant is enrolled, leadership qualities, personal maturity and motivation. The scholarship recipient must be enrolled in at least 9 hours each semester. For more information, contact the Graduate College at 417-836-5335.

Students who meet these criteria will receive a waiver covering the out-of-state portion of their required student fees. This waiver will be renewed one year for graduate students who complete 18 hours of graduate course work with at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA. Because this waiver covers all out-of-state fees, it cannot be combined with other out-of-state waivers or stipends. Midwest Student Exchange Program Missouri State University participates in the Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP). This program provides an opportunity for Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota and Nebraska residents to attend Missouri State at less than the regular non-resident fees. All graduate degree programs are available to qualified MSEP students at Missouri State. Graduate students whose legal residence is Kansas, North Dakota, Nebraska, Michigan or Minnesota may qualify if they also have an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.25 and are formally admitted to a graduate degree program. The value is a full waiver of out-of-state fees for the academic year (fall and spring) and may not be held in conjunction with the MOGO Scholarship. The Midwest Student Exchange Scholarship will be renewed for one year (4 semesters total) for graduate students who complete 18 hours per year with at least a 3.50 Missouri State grade point average. This award cannot be combined with other out-of-state waivers or graduate assistant stipends. Application is automatic with application to the University, but the total amount of awards available is limited to the first 20 eligible students. This award is not available during the summer semester.

Why did you choose Missouri State for your graduate studies? mh: When I decided to pursue a doctorate degree in audiology, I looked at four universities three public and one private. When I toured the facilities, I was impressed with the research equipment and space available. I felt safe and comfortable in the Springfield community and found the academic, research and clinic environments in my department to be at or above those available at the other universities. My final decision to attend was based on my tour, the multidisciplinary approach of the program, the faculty, and the overall monetary value of both the undergraduate and graduate programs. One of the nonmonetary values I discovered is that classes are largely taught by faculty and not by student teaching assistants.

Did you have the opportunity to work oneon-one with your professors? mh: I found the faculty to be some of the most dedicated and hardest-working people anywhere. All are open to individual discussion, including areas of academic or clinical difficulty or identifying methods to work through the emotional rigors of a doctoral program. Sometimes the discussions involved ideas for changes in the program, for new student activity or about some quirky research model. I appreciated their candor and openness. I recognized the high demands on their time and learned a great deal from each of them.

Any advice for prospective graduate students who are seeking a career change or advancement? mh: My advice is to prepare a five-year plan, including details of what you expect to accomplish in graduate training, where you would like to apply those highly specialized skills and, most importantly, identify your support system.

Dr. David Lutz, professor of psychology, and Kimberly Stagner, academic advisor for the College of Business Advisement Center, each received an Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit from the National Academic Advising Association. Dr. Laszlo Kovacs, research professor of agriculture; Dr. Wenping Qiu, associate research professor of agriculture; Dr. Richard Biagioni, professor of chemistry; and Dr. Paul Durham, director of the Center of Biomedical and Life Sciences, received an $897,955 award from the Missouri Life Sciences Research Board to develop new, high-value commercial products and to enhance disease resistance in grapevines.

Why would you recommend Missouri State to graduate students? js: We have a large number of faculty members who are doing really good research but who still care about teaching.

How much one-on-one contact do graduate students have with their professors? js: Every graduate student has a one-onone experience. They are in relatively small classes, sometimes with 10 or 12 students; the largest class is about 25. Many students also opt to do a thesis, and that process includes intensive work with an instructor. Faculty members will read the students work very carefully and even give them writing assistance. Were not just teaching the topic of religion, were also teaching them how to be professional scholars.

Why would you recommend the religious studies department to a prospective graduate student? js: I have colleagues with degrees from leading national universities, and we have sent on our masters graduates to some top-flight Ph.D. programs Harvard and Duke, for example. Were strong in several areas, including religion in American culture; Biblical study; the history of Christianity and Judaism; and Buddhism and Hinduism in south Asia. Students can get a good general introduction to the field.

Why is the study of religion important? I dont think we can understand American culture without understanding religion. We cant understand American politics, popular music or history. Different parts of the country have different, distinct personalities and I think religion and ethnicity have a lot to do with that.

What makes Springfield an ideal place to study religion? js: There are so many things to study here that a curious graduate student would find fascinating. Religion is tied to the music and tourism of the area. We also have the headquarters of Assemblies of God, one of the most important movements in the country, in Springfield and they have fantastic archives. The Baptist Bible Fellowship International is in town. Past graduate students have done research on local mega-churches, Christian Science congregations and coffeehouse ministries. Beyond Christianity, there is religious immigration that is reshaping the

What is your favorite place on campus? I love the atrium of Strong Hall. Its flooded with sunlight in the morning, which makes me happy to come to work. I love that when you walk in, you see students reading newspapers and smell coffee from the coffee cart. You see the public radio and the public television stations in the building, and you feel like this is where people are catching up with the latest news and talking about what matters.

Graduate Interdisciplinary Forum

The annual Graduate Interdisciplinary Forum is a venue that allows you, as a graduate student, to share the research and creative work you have completed in your graduate programs with students and faculty from across campus and from area colleges and universities. The Forum includes both oral and poster presentations. The Forum allows you to sharpen your presentation skills as you receive feedback on your research from people outside your discipline. Additionally, the Forum gives you a chance to see the projects of other graduate students from across campus. Participation in the Forum provides you with a valuable presentation experience and it can be added to your resume.

Do professors often work one-on-one with graduate students? er: There are a lot of opportunities for oneon-one work. I have worked with several students who wanted to go on to a Ph.D. program who have eventually gotten published. Those publications helped them get accepted to a program.

Do graduate students have an opportunity to help with research? er: Our graduate research assistant on the international entrepreneurship project has been with us for two years. He has been instrumental in maintaining the relationships with our collaborators.

Why would you recommend Missouri State to prospective graduate students? er: Its a university that does it all and does it well. I think we do a good job of serving our students through teaching. But many of the faculty members are also top-notch researchers. That is a unique blend. Institutions, typically, are either focused on one or the other, but we have both.

Why would you recommend the College of Business Administration to prospective graduate students? er: There are so many opportunities for students who earn a business degree. They have many choices in potential careers. My area, management, is so far-reaching. Every organization needs a leader and a manager, so you could go into virtually any field if you have management knowledge. Missouri State has the largest business program in the state, but it is not just being large that makes us great. We were accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, which is a really selective group, and they remarked on how many publications our faculty members have produced in last the fiveyear period. They were really impressed. Missouri State also has an international business focus, so there are lots of opportunities to do student-exchange programs.

What are some characteristics of the students at Missouri State? er: The students come from so many different backgrounds. I see a lot of diversity in life experiences. We have traditional graduate students, as well as working students. We have students from all over the state, country and world. They share their experiences in the classroom and that makes every course unique.

What is your favorite place on campus? I love the area outside the library because I love the sound of the Jane A. Meyer Carillon bells and the water fountains. Sometimes I will open my office windows to watch the carillon player go up the many stairs before playing the bells at noon. The sound gives a nice ambiance to the campus.

You can take a great deal from your classes if you attend when you are prepared and take in what your professors have to offer. Best place on campus to study? The library! I have spent many hours at a desk studying and writing in the quiet of Meyer library. Ive never had to use the quiet rooms. I have always sat in the commons areas by a window if I need a stretch and a look outside, or a center desk if I wanted to concentrate.

On Nov. 13, 2008, one of Americas greatest rock bands, The Eagles, opened Missouri States new $67 million, 11,000-seat JQH Arena to a sold-out crowd. Springfield-based hotelier and philanthropist John Q. Hammons gifted the first $30 million toward the construction of the worldclass facility, which is the home court for the Missouri State Bears and Lady Bears basketball teams. Its one of the largest indoor shopping centers in the state, with more than 190 stores. Around town, there are nearly 1,500 retail outlets to match your shopping interests. Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, one of Missouris largest tourist attractions, is the place to get your gear for outdoor fun. You can trek next door to the new American National Fish and Wildlife Museum to explore some of the native species, as well as a few thousand others. Springfields indoor ice-skating rink has brought a new dimension of indoor entertainment to the area. You can enjoy recreational skating or cheer on the Missouri State Ice Bears, who compete in the American Collegiate Hockey Association. Springfields professional baseball team, the Springfield Cardinals, offers an opportunity to enjoy quality, professional baseball on a students budget. As do the Baseball Bears, who share Hammons Field with the St. Louis Cardinals AA affiliate, which is a member of the Texas League of professional baseball clubs.
