Governors

Features
Demonstrates the effects of speed, mass, geometry and other variables of governor characteristics Basic drive unit will accept and enable comparisons to be made between three easily interchangeable governors: Hartnell governor, Porter governor and Proell governor Portable and suitable for classroom demonstrations as well as use by students in the laboratory Fitted with fully interlocked transparent safety cover Operates from safe low voltage supply Comprehensive technical manual Two-year warranty Complies with the latest EC Safety Directives

Description
By employing different lever systems, the centrifugal force on the rotating masses raises a sleeve against the action of gravity or spring. The governor mechanisms are mounted on their own spindles which are graduated at 4 mm intervals to indicate the centre sleeve position. On the Porter and Proell governors, provision is made for adding steel balls to vary the centre sleeve mass. The Hartnell governor offers the facility of varying spring rate and initial compression, bell-crank arm ratio and mass of rotating weight. The rotating member is belt driven by a variable speed d.c. motor, and is controlled by a separate speed control unit. An output to an electronic tachometer is provided.

Instruction Manual
A full technical manual is provided giving details of the apparatus, experimental procedure and typical results. Separate operating instructions accompany any ancillary equipment supplied.

Range of Experiments
An extensive range of experiments may be carried out with this apparatus, including: 1. Determination of characteristic curves of sleeve position against speed of rotation. 2. Derivation of actual controlling force curves from the above characteristics and comparison with theoretically predicted controlling force curves. 3. Comparison of governor types in terms of sensitivity, stability and the governor effort. 4. On the Porter and Proell governors, the effects of varying centre sleeve mass may be observed. 5. On the Hartnell governor, the effect of varying the following parameters: bell-crank arm ratio spring rate initial spring compression including the demonstration of the conditions under which the governor becomes unstable.
