Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 9 June 1870) was an English novelist, generally considered the greatest

t of his time. Many of his novels were originally published serially, that is, they appeared once a month in newspapers or magazines, which made them very popular at the time. His novels and short stories are so popular that they have never gone out of print. He was born in Portsmouth, England, on the 7th February 1812. He was the second of eight children. His father worked in an office. Soon after Charles birth they moved to Bloomsbury and then to Kent, where he grew up. The family, full of debts, had to move to London in 1822. The father was sent to Marshalsea debtors prison. Charles was the only one who remained outside and, at the age of twelve, he had to work in a factory in order to pay for his accommodation and to help his family. He remembered this terrible time all his life, and wrote about it in his novel David Copperfield twenty-five years later. In 1836 he married Catherine Thomson Hogarth, with whom he had ten children. They separated in 1858. He became a newspaper reporter, and wrote his first novel, The Pickwick Papers (1837), which was very popular. In the next four years he wrote three more novels, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby and The Old Curiosity Shop, which were all very successful. People loved A Christmas Carol, when it appeared in 1843. In A Tale of Two Cities, a story about the French Revolution, he showed his interest in history, and in Great Expectations, he wrote about the differences between the rich and the poor, which he had known himself in his own early life. He spent long hours at his writing desk, but he also had time for his large circle of family and friends, and for helping people. As he grew older, he worked harder than ever, giving public readings of his works in Britain and America, and continuing to write novels. He died of a stroke on 9th June 1870.
