BUILDING STUDENTS SPEAKING SKILL THROUGH COMMUNICATIVE ACTIVITIES

INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Problem 1. Significance of Speaking Skill


a. Speaking skill is an important media to communicate with others all

over the world. b. Good speaking skill enable someone to get scholarship to go abroad.
c. Everyone needs speaking skill as an instrument for social interaction. d. Speaking skill is needed to understand and express language meaning.

e. Speaking skill is needed in public speaking.


f. Speaking skill is needed in giving information, suggestion, persuasion,

etc.
2. Students speaking skill is relatively low a. Students should have good ability to speak but most student have

problem to speak up thier own idea confidently.


b. Good speaking is characterized by good pronunciation but most student

fail to produce the sound of a language well.


c. Students are expected to be able to speak in a good structure but many

students cannot put words in a good grammatical order.


d. Good speaking is also characterized by good intonation, stress, and pitch

but many students fail in these micro skills. B. Identification of the Problem There are some factors that influence students speaking skills: teacher, student, and process. 1. Problems related to teacher: method, material, media. 2. Problems related to students: interest, motivation, confidence, learning habits, learning strategies, socio-economic background, intelligence, etc. 3. Problems related to process: classroom activities, interaction, language practices, or exposure, school social climate, etc.

C. Delimitation of the Problem Students low speaking skills can be built by using communicative activities because communicative acctivities can overcome the problems of speaking (ideas, linguistic features, organization) as well as problems related to teacher, student, and process. D. Formulation of the Problem
1. What factors influence the students low speaking skill? 2. What strategies action is effective to build students speaking skills?

3. How can the strategic action be implemented effectively?


4. What significances does communicative activities have in improving the

students speaking skills? E. Research Objective


1. Identifying factors influencing the students low speaking skill.

2. Developing plans of action based on the influencing factors. 3. Implementing the plans of action to find out strategic action.
4. Describing significances of communicative activities in building the students

low speaking skill. F. Significance of the Research study 1. Students will learn how to build good cooperation with others, give their opinions, and appreciate their friends opinion. 2. Students will learn how to develop their potentials in building good cooperation so as to make their learning successful. 3. Teacher can make use of the research findings to enrich their teaching methods and techniques.
