STORMWATER in CHRISTCHURCH
Current situation: Christchurch has a significant annual rainfall. In this rainfall, the Avon River is relied on as the main component of the citys storm water drainage system. The urbanisation of the CBD has resulted in high percentage of impermeable surfaces so the amount of run-off water continues to increase and put even greater pressure on the natural waterways. resulting issue: The citys storm water contains pollution from the idustrialisation of the city, which causes damage to the health and quality of the natural water ways. The high discharge of the storm water drainage into the river results in high river flows and the increased likelihood of floods.

-The existing storm water drainage will be redirected away from the Avon River and instead to a single point. -The water passes through a filter chamber holding back any solid mass. -The liquid passes through a hydro turbine at high pressure which generates electricity to power functions of the Green house including artificial lighting and heating during winter. -The water then moves through to a constructed wetland filtration canal which naturally cleans the water of all toxins. -Once the treatment process is complete it enters a storage cistern -The water is then used for several functions: Watering of the garden and of crops Temperature regulation- through sub ground cooling in summer, and turbine heating of water and turbine powered HVAC in winter. -Excess water is discharged into the reclaimed wetlands In the summer months where rainfall is less, the nearby Avon River water will be used for the watering of the greenhouse after passing through the same filtration and wetland treatment. The water will bypass the turbine during the warm seasons as there will be less demand on powernatural cooling and ventilation and no artificial lighting needed. Any power requirements will be supplied by solar electricity gained through PV panels during this time.
