Tastes of Judaism
What is Jewish food? Why do we eat sweet foods on Rosh Hashanah and dairy foods on Shavuot? What does it mean to take challah? Whats so unique about Israeli food? These are a few of the questions we will consider in this hands-on exploration of Jewish cooking. We will learn how particular foods became traditional for Shabbat and Jewish holidays, how different culinary traditions developed in Jewish communities all over the world, and what are the common links that make all of these foods Jewish. We will start in the classroom, but we will spend most of our time in the kitchen, where we will experiment with Jewish recipes, learn a few cooking techniques and get ready for the holidays. Shabbatonim The Retreat Experience...

Shabbatonim are a highlight of the Havayah program, with teens coming together as a community to learn with our faculty and clergy, participate in Shabbat services, engage in social and team-building activities, and spend free time with friends (both old and new). Our core curriculum is presented at our Shabbatonim. We offer three Shabbatonim each year for Grades 8-10, plus a Shabbaton for Grades 11-12, with our Clergy. Shabbatonim are an essential and important component of the Havayah Program. They not only enable students to engage in learning about our core curriculum, but also (and most importantly) give our teens the opportunity to build a strong sense of community. Consequently, we ask that students attend at least two out of three Shabbatonim each year in grades 8-10, and that students in grades 11 and 12 attend the Shabbaton especially designed for upperclassmen. Many students choose to enroll in all of our Shabbatonim...feel free to maximize your experience! If you have any questions regarding Havayah Shabbatonim, please contact Laura Hyman.

Frequently Asked Questions About The Experience...

What is Confirmation? Confirmation is a ceremony developed by leaders of the Reform movement about 100 years ago to honor teenagers who have decided to continue their Jewish education into adulthood. To prepare for this milestone, students gather to meet, learn, struggle and engage with our clergy, our faculty and each other and confirm their commitment to Jewish learning and the Jewish people. The Confirmation Ceremony takes place on the evening of Shavuot, the night when our people celebrate the receiving of Torah. What kind of learning will students do in their Chavurot? In addition to focusing on an area of special interest (acting, cooking, etc.), each Chavurah includes Jewish text study, discussion and projects aimed at deepening students understanding of Jewish issues related to the Chavurahs topic, as well as opportunities to get to know each other and build community. Because our Chavurot are interest-based (not grade-based), students choose to participate in activities where they have fun and engage in Jewish study. How do Shabbatonim fit into Confirmation? We ask that students who wish to become Confirmed participate in Shabbatonim in order to engage in learning in our core curriculum. The curriculum includes three subject areas, which rotate on a three year cycle: American Jewish History, European Jewish History and the Holocaust, and Israel. Our Shabbatonim help build and develop strong friendships and meaningful connections to Judaism and the TBE community. Why does Havayah present the core curriculum at Shabbatonim, rather than in a classroom setting? We believe very strongly in the power of experiential Jewish education. Shabbatonim enable students to make authentic connections to their Jewish identity while living in Jewish time. Students participate in Shabbat services, engage in community building and socialize over the course of a weekend. These interactions deepen bonds and comfort with peers, which result in an increased readiness to learn. A retreat format also provides more flexibility in terms of class timing, space, resources and staff than a classroom format, allowing us to provide the highest quality learning programs for our students. What kind of support is there for students with special needs? We are thrilled to provide ongoing special needs support within the Havayah community, through working with a dedicated Special Needs Coordinator. The Coordinator will provide consultation to our faculty and help us accommodate students with a variety of learning needs in both formal and informal settings. If you have questions about special needs support or services, please contact Laura Hyman How does BELY (our youth group) fit into Havayah? BELY, TBEs youth group for grades 8-12, falls under the umbrella of Havayah. We encourage all students in grades 8-12 to participate in BELY events, which provide additional social and educational opportunities in an informal and community-based setting. For additional information about BELY, visit BELYOnline.org.
