Check to see if you have the most up-to-date version of this pattern here: http://knitfreedom.com/aspen-ice-hat-version-1.0 Errata: http://knitfreedom.com/help/errata/aspen-ice-hat This hat design was created by Camilla Emond of Magnolia Handspun based on Liat Gat's design for the Aspen Ice Cowl. Due to popular demand, Liat then tested and wrote down the pattern for the Aspen Ice Hat. Sizes: Small, Medium, Large (fits a 21, 22, 23-inch head, respectively - model shown wearing size medium). Finished Measurements: 20, 21, 22 inches in circumference. Required Gauge: 2.5 sts/in in garter stitch. Options: Can be made fitted, slouchy, or super-slouchy (shown on model) - the instructions for each style are in the pattern. Materials: Yarn: 2 skeins Magnolia Handspun, or 100 yards of bulky thick-and-thin yarn, such as Mango Moon Dreadlocks Needles: Size 15 needles, whichever type you prefer for knitting in the round (two circulars, DPNs, Magic Loop, etc) Notions: Scissors and tapestry needle. Optional: large pompom maker. Abbreviations: CO: cast on K: knit P: purl YO: yarnover K2tog: knit 2 together Instructions: CO 34(36,38) sts. Join for working in the round. Brim: Round 1: K. Round 2: P. (tip: click here to learn how to do garter stitch in the round without purling) Repeat rounds 1-2 5 more times. You should have 6 garter-stitch ridges, not counting the caston edge (tip: click here to learn how to count rows on garter stitch).
Hat Body: Round 1 and all subsequent odd-numbered rounds: *YO, k2tog, rep from * around. Round 2 and all subsequent even-numbered rounds: Knit. Repeat repeat rounds 1 and 2 until work measures For a regular-fitting hat: 5 inches For a slouchy hat: 6.5-7 inches For a super-slouchy hat (pictured): 8 inches from beginning of hat body. Decreasing: Round 1: (K2tog) around [17(18,19) sts]. Sizes Small and Large ONLY: Round 2: *K2tog, rep from * to last st, k1 [9(10) sts]. Size Medium ONLY: Round 2: K2tog around (9 sts). Finishing: Break yarn, leaving a 12-inch tail for weaving in. Thread tail twice through rem sts on needles. Pull yarn tight to close the top of the hat. Weave in all ends. Note: For maximum chunkiness and texture, do not block hat. Just wear and be fabulous! Optional: Giant pompom Using an extra-large pompom maker, make a pompom and sew it onto the end of the hat.
