Visual Arts, Alankar Museum & Shilpgram

Visual arts Visual Art Division looks after the organizations art exhibitions at the Kendra galleries namely Sudarshan, Sukriti, Surekh, Chaturdik, and Parijat I & II. Camps and workshops of artists working in both modern and traditional styles are also organized from time to time. These facilities provide the artists an opportunity to exhibit their works and at the same time people feel able to observe the works of art of other states and countries. The ground and first floors of Contemporary Art Museum Sphatic presently show the masterpieces of few renowned artists and sculptors. The museum potentially depicts the creativity of the contemporary artists of Rajasthan and India. There are some large sized paintings on various supports i.e. paper, textile, and canvas; depicting various genres of paintings. The sculpture collection of this contemporary museum contains collection focused on the various themes. Sculpture studio and studio for graphics are presently used by the students to practice the art genre. Alankar Museum The Alankar Museum, a permanent exhibition space at JKK consists of two floors. The exhibits on ground floor are of variety of sizes and stylistic denominations. There are some large sized, carved wooden doors, noble furniture items, pots (metallic, papier mche, ceramics, ), terracotta artifacts and also a few depicting statues of Hindu deities i.e Lord Ganesha, Krishna and, Durga (various reincarnations of goddess Durga i.e. Ma Kali and other gods-goddesses worshiped in Rajasthan including Ramdeoji, and Pabuji as well). The wooden swing, the collection of ceramics, decorative boxes, carved wooden furniture and statues and icons of Rajasthani as well as spiritualistic thought could be considered to provide the focus for the display. The first floor also exhibits a significant collection of various articles and represents the traditional system of rural living and the indigenous contents of Rajasthan and Rajasthani folks, with a considerable number of displays on cottage industry and agricultural system prevalent in Rajasthan. The exhibits here are mainly the belongings used in Rajasthani houses, particularly in the villages or country-side. The collection here mainly contains hookah, lanterns, embossed pitchers and duvets. Shilpgram a rural complex housed in it 9.5 acre complex known as Shilpgram is the venue for fairs, haat bazaars and festivals. It has six huts representing Braj (Bharatpur), Hadoti (Kota), Tribal( Dungarpur), Desert (Barmer and Bikaner), Shekhawati (Sikar) and Centre ( Jaipur). Crafts fair, festivals and folk programs are organized in shilpgram from time to time, bringing it to life, vibrancy and colour

Documentation (Audio Visual Library, Publications, Library) Audio-visual Library Jawahar Kala Kendra carries out documentation through audio-visual methods and in print also. Various forms of singing and dancing, theatre, both folk and modern and techniques of crafts have been documented and are being done regularly. Performing arts of Rajasthan is another important work compiled by the Kendra in which all major folk forms of dance, theatre and music are presented. Recently Pandoon Ka Kada (Mewati Mahabharat) and Jaangda Style of singing has been documented in audio

format. Publications The kendra has published district wise cultural survey reports of Rajasthan, which include information on collections, monuments, artists, fairs and festivals. Arts of rural areas are equally represented in the kendras publications, Lok-svar a collection of songs and Mandana floor decoration done by village women cover this area. Since its inception, Kendra has brought out many publications including Protected monuments of Rajasthan, Art Treasures of Rajasthan and recently Museums of Rajasthan. Besides these major activities the Kendra grant financial help to authors for publishing book on art and culture, 120 books have been published so far. Library The Kendra houses a well-stocked library on performing and visual arts of nearly ten thousand volumes and subscribes art journals. The Library offers membership to students, scholars and those who are interested in art. At present there are 200 members. Besides them, there is a long list of temporary of visitors coming to Jaipur , both national and international prefer to take temporary membership for a week or two, books are not issued to them but they are allowed to sit and study.

Theatre Theatre reflects the society and attempt to reform the society. The core work of the theater section of JKK is not only to display the dramas; but also, to cross references these with the new and veteran genres. Activities carried out here are designed to provide the ideal platform to bridge the gap among the artist, students, scholars, with the integration of different modern theatre forms and a movement towards a multi disciplinary approach towards the understanding, dissemination and propagation of theatre. Jawahar Kala Kendra provides theatre space for staging the plays and attracts audience through adequate publicity. The Kendra has three performing areas, Madhyavarti an open air theatre designed after a traditional Rajasthan step well where steps are used for sittings, a regular closed theatre named Rangayan for modern theatre and black box- Krishnayan where intimate performances take place. Musicians and connoisseurs sit together discuss various aspects of music and theatre. Committed to the promotion and development of theatre, this division helps in the organization of plays, festivals, workshops and camps in the rangayan, the closed theatre, the Madhyavarti the open air theatre and in arena the Krishnayan. It alsoseeks to preserve and develop the local traditions of folk theatre which are on the verge of extinction. Ultimately, the theatre section of JKK has been buoying as a civic playground for developing and presenting new and challenging work across the theatres. Veteran and

new theatre artists have taken the institution as an innovative and a convenient way of thinking about arts.
