Letter from the President
Brothers and Friends, If nothing else, this newsletter must contain one vital message: Cal Alpha misses you. Were curious who you are, what youre doing, and how you got there since you graduated from Cal, and were curious about all the same things from your old fraternity friends and pledge brothers. Because of this, weve treated you to an Alpha Star full of exciting developments in the chapter. First and foremost: were planning on having real alumni events this semester events you would show up for, events that would truly let us build that bridge from us to you (SEE PAGE 4). Keep an eye out for that, because our new alumni secretary is already doing a stellar job, and I cant wait to see what he puts together. Secondly, we want you to see where weve come in the past couple of semesters: we have 52 members including Phikeia this semester, a result of recruiting 23 new members during the 11-12 school year; we have a 3.48 GPA, the second best in the IFC and the third best in the whole Greek system; and last semester we staffed a Walk for ALS event, an effort which we wish to follow up with events this semester, including fundraising late-night barbecues and an Iron Phi 5k. Even within our plot of land weve made improvements, repainting the front deck, renovating the basement, and restoring our plumbing, gutters, and roof. Third, we want to share with you all of the developments coming to us in the year 2012. Besides all of the brotherspecific stuffan enhanced scholarship program, reaching out to more sororities, and having more frequent and better brotherhood eventswere taking steps to make the house a better place for alumni to come, reminisce, and build a connection with the current brothers. Were repainting the interior of the house this semester; were exploring options for new furniture and/or entertainment in the living room; and countless home improvements are in Housing Corps plans for the near future. 2012 is an exciting year to be a Phi; its an exciting year to be a Phikeia; its an exciting year to be an alumnus. Were looking forward to seeing you again because, well, we miss you. Yours In The Bond, Steven Shuken #1358 President

The House Band

With the addition of the back deck to the house, a few brothers and I decided it was only appropriate to bring back the Phi Delt band! Composed of a guitar, vocals, drums, a bass, and keyboard our band covers a variety of songs including She Loves You by the Beatles and Respect by Arethra Franklin. Although we have only performed at our house we are hoping to raise money for furnishings by playing at local venues. It is truly rewarding to play music for our brothers and alumni, so hopefully you will get a chance to hear us play at alumni events. Yours in the bond, Matt Mueller #1345 Chorister

Rush Still Strong with a 7 Man Class

After another successful rush week featuring on-campus recruiting efforts and a popular tea and hookah night, the brothers of Phi Delta Theta have inducted seven new pledges. After a brilliant fall rush, Humza, Aaron, EdAlthough their personailities differ vastly, they all in our eyes embody the qualities necessary to become a Phi.

fer vastly, they all in our eyes embody the qualities necessary to become a Phi. Our events this spring brought many new people to the house, but more importantly brought the brothers together in a way that allowed us to all become a big part of rush. Each brother had the opportunity to talk with a number of potentials that walked into the house for our evening BBQ, bowling trip, and broomball. One of the most

memorable and enjoyable nights was our formal dinner night, which we decided to do a little differently by having our dinner cooked by one of our very own brother Ben Kahriman. As always, the brothers and Phikeia were able to come together as one for the first time this semester to celebrate the months to come. I am looking forward to seeing our new inductees grow into worthy brothers of Phi Delta Theta over the coming pledge semester under the leadership of Phikeia Educator, brother Fernando Lopez, and I am sure that they will take their place as leaders of our chapter in the future. Phi-lanthropic Endeavors
Last semester over 30 of the brothers headed over to Heather Farm Park in Walnut Creek at 6:30 in the morning to volunteer in the 2011 Walk to Defeat ALS. The brothers were on site for over 6 hours, helping to set up, register walkers, distribute petitions, show walkers around, and clean up. Overall the event was a great success and a rewarding, meaningful day for everyone. The goal for Spring 2012 is for California Alpha to become a Iron Phi Chapter by raising $10,000 dollars for ALS. In past years the chapter has already raised a total of $1,450.01. To reach this goal, the fraternity plans to host several fundraisers throughout the semester, including a Hot Dogs for Lou BBQ, a restaurant fundraiser, and a 5k run. For more information regarding these events, including the time and place, please contact brother Patrick Fuster, alumni secretary. In order to reach our goal we will need your support, and we highly welcome your attendance as an opportunity to meet the current brothers and support a cause central to the mission of our fraternity.

A Rebirth of Our Ritual

Brothers, As some of you may be aware, and some more may not, performance of the Ritual and reading of the Bond in the California Alpha chapter has waned in recent years, so I am pleased to announce that our President, brother Steven Shuken, and I are working together to reverse this alarming trend and return the Ritual and the Bond to a prominent position in the lives of the brothers. As it has been noted in meeting, it is the Bond that binds us together as a fraternity, without which we are only a group of people living together in the same house who get along well. Herefore, we have decided that the Ritual be performed and the Bond read at every chapter meeting hence, as is proper. Soon as well I hope to mend the broken corner of the altar. Speaking further of the Bond, ours is in fact one of the few copies of the Bond signed by an original founding father still in current circulation. Understandably, after 139 years the book is beginning to wear and brother Lindley's beautiful penmanship beginning to fade. For this reason we plan to retire our current copy by the semesters end whereupon it shall be sent to International Headquarters where it can be better preserved for future generations. Additionally, upon special request to International Headquarters, I have received the honor of permission to inscribe the new copy of the Bond myself. We have received the materials necessary, and I shall work my best to have it completed as soon as possible while employing the patience and time required to produce a transcription worthy of the words contains within.

Home Improvement
Brothers, I am excited to tell you about the improvements that have been made to the house recently. Last semester new benches were built to line the walls in the basement. The pledges took on the task of painting those benches and repainting the floor in the basement. We still have some painting left to do down there but the room looks much better than before and has allowed the basement to become, once again, a great place to hold our weekly chapter meetings. We also got another big and very necessary house improvement out of the way last semester when the roof was completely replaced. The brothers are planning to repaint the first floor of the house in the next couple of weeks, which will provide a much needed face-lift to those rooms. We really appreciate all the alumni help we have received to improve the house so that it remains a place we can all enjoy and be proud of.

House Furnishings Got Junk? The Chapter house is constantly in need of new supplies and we graciously accept donations of furniture and other equipment in working condition. We are continually trying to improve the appearance of the house and would gladly accept any donations. If you would like to make a contribution please contact Patrick Fuster at (818) 620-5938 or at patrickfuster@gmail.com. We could use the following: Kitchen Appliances - Furniture Electronic Appliances - Tools Your donations have allowed us to repaint the first floor, furnish the basement for meeting, and fix the front door. We are always striving to make the house a better place for both current brothers and alumni.
