The Meditation of BuddhismDepend on the Agarma Sutra

for Studies

English Abstract

This article is to explore the theory and practice of the Buddhist meditation based on
the Agama Sutra mainly and its method to root out the ignorance. It emphasizes on
seven branches of enlightenment, four-mindfulness, the contemplation on death and
contemplation on breath. Buddhist meditation was told by the Buddha to practice and
apply in daily life. Its purpose is to cleanse the body, speech and mind, and to root out
the ignorance. Therefore, the ultimate purpose of the Buddhist meditation is to walk
on the path of purification and to attain the nirvana.

Keywords: Seven branches of enlightenment, contemplation on death, four

mindfulness, contemplation on breath, samathda, vipassana.
