CriteriaforGradingPrivateLessons
Yourfinalgradefortheprivatelessonwillbedeterminedbyaveragingtheteacher's

evaluationgrade(50%)andthefinalexamgrade(50%).Forpurposesofaveraging,agrade ofFonaproficiencyiscountedasazero.Therefore,youmustpassyourproficiencyinorder topassyourPrivateInstruction.Seetheprivateinstructioncoursesyllabus,distributedby yourprivateinstructor,fordetails. Thefollowinggradingcriteriawillbeusedintheprivateinstructor'sevaluation: A(90100)Superior,Exceptional;controlofcoursematerialenablesexcellentproduction. B(8089)Good;graspofmaterialenablesaboveaverageproduction. C(7079)Average;assimilationofmaterialenablesacceptableproduction. D(6069)BelowAverage;exposuretomaterialenablespoorbutpassableproduction. F(below60)NotPassing;assimilationofmaterialisinsufficienttodemonstrateacceptable productivecapacity. Finalexamrequirementsmeasurevocalprogresscoveredinyourprivatelesson.Depending onyourownskillsandrateofprogress,however,youmayneedtospendalargeportionof thelessontimeonexamrelatedmaterial.Onceyouareabletoperformtheminimumexam requirementstothesatisfactionofyourprivateteacher,youwillbeexpectedtoworkon moreadvancedsongmaterial,improvisationalconceptsand/ortechnicalmaterials. SchedulingofPIFinalExams(Proficiencies) Proficienciesaregivenduringthefinalexamweekofeachsemester.Examsignupbegin week8eachsemester,andtakeplaceonlineathttp://berklee.net/vc.Signupsarehalted intheafternoonofthelastschooldayproceedingfinalexamweek(generallyaFriday).Your privateinstructorwillprovideorapproveyourlistofsongselectionspreparedfortheexam, andthisinformationwillbeinputintoyourstudentvoicedepartmentrecord.Anychanges inmaterialmustbeapprovedbytheinstructorbeforetheexam. IV.CreditByExamforPrivateInstruction

StudentscannotreceivecreditbyexamforprivateinstructionLevels5,6,7or8. ThetakingofaCreditbyexamproficiencymustbeapprovedbyyourcurrentvoiceteacher and/orthedepartmentchair.AstudentmustobtaintheminimumexamgradeofAin ordertoqualifyforcredit.AstudentmaynotattemptmorethanonecreditbyexamperPI level,andmaynottestoutofthelevelinwhichtheyarecurrentlyenrolled. ProfessionalMusicandMusicEducationmajorsmustcompleteLevels5and6inresidence atBerklee.PerformancemajorsmustcompleteLevels5through8inresidenceatBerklee. Thecreditsforanyapprovedcreditbyexamwillnotbeawardeduntilthestudenthasmet thefollowingadditionalcriteria:

Priorreviewandapprovalofplansbytheinstrumentaldepartmentandmajorchairs atleasttwosemestersinadvanceofexpectedgraduationdate. Maintenanceofaminimum3.0GPAinprivateinstruction,andgenerallygood academicstanding. Completionofallprivateinstructionfinalexamrequirements. CompletionofSeniorRecital(Performancemajors)orFinalProject(Professional MusicandMusicEducationMajors).

Studentsmaytakethecreditbyexamproficiencyduringfinalsweek,orthethird WednesdayoftheFallandSpringsemesters.Signupsforfinalsweekproficienciestake placeonlineathttp://berklee.net/vcbeginningweek8eachsemester.Signupsforthethird Wednesdayproficienciestakeplaceonthefirstdayofclassinroom11403U. AdditionalLessons:Nonleveled&Nonprincipal Asavoiceprincipalyoumustearnallofyourprivateinstructioncreditforgraduationin voicelessons.Ifyouchangeyourprincipalinstrument,youmayjeopardizeyourgraduation status. Nonleveledlessons,whichdonotincludeafinalexam,maybeavailabletostudentswho arealreadyenrolledinanexambasedlessonandwishtotakeanadditionallessonontheir principalinstrument.Nonleveledlessonsarenotincludedinyourfulltimetuition,and incuraprivateinstructionfeeasdetailedintheregistrationmanual.

Nonleveledlessonsdonotsatisfythegraduationrequirementforprivateinstruction; instead,theyareappliedtoyourgeneralelectivecreditwithintheestablishedlimits. NonleveledprivateinstructiononinstrumentsoutsideoftheVoiceDepartmentmaybe available,dependingonteacheravailability.Approvalbytheappropriatedepartmentchair isrequired.Asavoiceprincipal,anyprivateinstructioncredityouearninlessonsotherthan voicelessonsisappliedtoyourgeneralelectivecredit,withintheestablishedlimits.

V.PrivateInstructionFinalExamRequirements

AllWritingDivision,MusicTechnologyDivision,MusicBusiness,andMusicTherapymajors: 4Levelsonprincipalinstrument(Standardtrack). ProfessionalMusic&MusicEducationmajors:6Levelsonprincipalinstrument (Performancetrack). Performancemajors:8Levelsonprincipalinstrument(Performancetrack).

Dualprincipalsmayaccompanythemselvesonallsongsatanylevel. CDsoriPodsmaybeusedforvocalproficiencyaccompaniment.Studentsare encouragedtoconsultwiththeirprivateteachertoensurethataccompaniment tracksareofappropriatequality.AllstudentsarerequiredtohaveabackupCDof theirselectionstouseifnecessary. Withtheexceptionofvocalexercises(Vaccai/Concone),allselectionsmustbe performedfrommemory. StudentsarenotrequiredtosingthevocalexercisesinItalian.Anysyllablesmaybe substitutedwiththeapprovalofyourprivateinstructor. Selectionspreparedforanygivenexaminationmaynotbeutilizedinsubsequent testing,withtheexceptionofcreditbyexamswhichhavescoredlessthananA. Yourproficiencysongsshoulddemonstratetheworkyouhavedoneinyourprivate lesson.SongselectionsforProficienciescannotbechangedwithoutpriorapproval oftheprivateinstructor.Songscannotbechangedonthedayofyourproficiency. StudentsmaychoosethefirstselectiontobeperformedbeginningatLevel3. Afailinggradeonaproficiencyresultsinafailinggradeforthatprivateinstruction level.Forpurposesofgradecalculation,anyproficiencygradebelow60isaveraged asazero.

AdditionalProficiencyRequirementGuidelines

TranspositionsarenotallowedonTraditionalSongs,Artsongs,MusicalTheater,and NegroSpirituals. Guitarand/orpianoaccompanimentmaybeusedinvocalproficiencies. Onlyoneaccompanistisallowedperproficiency. Originalsongsmaybeusedinavocalproficiencyatthediscretionoftheprivate teacherbutonenonoriginaltunemustbeincludedintheproficiency. RequiredVocalExercises(Vaccai,Concone)maybereplacedatthediscretionofthe privateteacherandbyapprovalofthedepartmentchair. PerformancemajorsLevels7and8:ExceptforTraditionalsongs,allsongsmustbe performedwithamicrophone.Specialcircumstancesmustbeapprovedbythe privateteacheranddepartmentchair.

FINALEXAMMAKEUPINFORMATION

Makeupexamsforincompleteswilloccuronthe3rdWednesdayofFallandSpring semester,andduringFinalsWeekofFall,Spring,andSummersemester.Signups beingthefirstdayofclassinFallandSpringat11:00amin11403U. Accompanistsarenotprovidedforanymakeupfinalexams. Excusedincompleteproficienciesmustbecompletedbytheendofthenext semesterinwhichthestudentisenrolled(excludingsummer)orelsethegradewill becomeanIFandtheentirePIlevelwillneedtoberepeated. Allmakeupproficiencieswillresultina1letterdropingradeforthatproficiency (i.e.:lettergradeof"A"willbechangedto"B.")exceptincasesofseriousillnessor familyemergency(seebelow)

Severeillnessorfamilyemergencywillbeexcusedonlywith:

StudentsmajoringinPerformancemastertheconcepts,techniques,andmusicalstylesthat arenecessaryforasuccessfulperformancecareer.Requiredcoursesemphasize improvisation,ensembles,styleanalysis,rehearsaltechniques,fourlevelsofrecital preparation(culminatingintheSeniorRecital,whichistherequiredfinalprojectfor Performancemajors)andeightlevelsofprivateinstructiononaprincipalinstrument.
