Lesson in Unit Context: This lesson is the first lesson in the third subsection of Chapter 8. The chapter covers the formation of the brand new government. This lesson answers the unit question: How did the competing ideas, experiences of political leaders, and fears of the Founders influence the development of political parties? It comes after a lesson in which the students read and analyzed Washingtons Farewell Address where he specifically warned against the formation of political parties. It precedes a review of the section and a quiz on the formation of the new government. Goals/Objectives: Students will be able to: Cite critical factors leading to the development of the Federalists and Democratic-Republicans. Summarize the key positions of the Federalists and Democratic-Republicans and the reasoning behind those positions. Describe how the character of American life and political society changed with respect to: o Competing views on the responsibilities of government o The development of political parties Considering the learner: The students have done analyzed a text that explained Jefferson and Hamiltons position on the national bank. They are essentially familiar with Jefferson and Hamiltons positions on how the constitution should be interpreted. They have completed a text analysis of the two viewpoints and completed a dialogue/twitter homework assignment imaging the two gentlemen were in discussion. This assignment was earlier last week, so there is a chance they no longer remember. The students in the fourth hour class are particularly disruptive in this hour and tend to have a problem staying on task. For this reason, Im going to ensure there is not a minute is wasted in the class period. About 25% of the students in the eighth grade have IEPs and most are reading below grade level. For this reason, we read many documents together in class

with discussion, so the students who have trouble reading can get the information through auditory means. The general reading level and comprehension level is below grade level, so I anticipate some challenges with the text. I also anticipate some motivation problems as well. There are a few disruptive students in this hour who can cause a commotion for the minutest reasons. Assessment At the end of the hour, I will collect a brief piece of writing. Students will answer the question: Who had a better plan for the United States, Hamilton or Jefferson? Cite at least one piece of evidence to back up their claim.
