This essay describes some important points and examples of different forms of communication, in particularly verbal and importantly the supportive non-verbal communication. Evidently, both verbal and non-verbal methods have inherently unique roles in nursing. However, it is when these methods are utilised in a complementary manner, that they most effectively denote empathy, trust and understanding. This essay also describes how listening is a big part of communication. Accordingly, the productive delivery and construal of both these communicative modes, contributes to the establishment of mutually satisfying therapeutic nurse-patient relationships, with the ultimate goal of assisting in patient recovery. It is important to be able to communicate effectively so you can understand all angles of relationships. Communicating with patients is an essential part of nursing care. Clearly therapeutic communication is central to health nursing and through this process nurse-client relationships can be enhanced. Effective therapeutic communication is a cornerstone upon which the nurseclient relationship is built and nursing process implemented. Utilising therapeutic communication skills by the nurse enhances nurseclient communication interactions and encourages the client to develop towards a healthy life. In establishing a checklist for effective therapeutic communication, it will be goal accomplishing stating it in the light of positive guidelines (the dos) rather than negations(the donts).
