RIETONDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL POLICY FOR ABSENTEEISM, LATENESS AND TRUANCY

A. ABSENTEEISM 1. LEARNERS 1.1 Learners are marked present or absent in the official class register during the Register period at the beginning of the day. 1.2 Registers are submitted to the Deputy Principal on a Friday before 09:00 and weekly statistics are calculated and kept on record. 1.3 Learners are encouraged to bring a letter explaining reasons for absence on their return to school. 1.4 If a learner is absent for more than 2 days, it is the task of the class educator to rule out truancy by getting the secretaries to phone guardians. 1.5 It is expected that parents inform the School that a child will be away from School for reasons other than sickness. This should be done well in advance. 2. 2.1 EDUCATORS Staff members are expected to contact the Headmaster (or, if he is unavailable, the Deputy Principal or the School office) before the start of the school day i.e. before 07:30. A doctors certificate is required if a staff member is absent for 3 or more days. Staff members sign a time sheet, kept in the staff room, which records arrival and departure times for the week. Absentees of CS, PS and Support Staff are recorded in the official staff register, kept by the Deputy Principal. Leave forms are to be completed in full and signed by the Headmaster on the staff members return. All leave requests should be given to the Headmaster in writing.

LATENESS 1. LEARNERS 1.1 Parents are reminded at regular intervals via the school newsletters to have their children at school on time. 1.2 School gates are locked at 07:45 and latecomers must report to the prefects on duty, who record their names, the time of arrival and reason for lateness.

Debits are issued to regular offenders or those without valid excuses. 2. 2.1 2.2 EDUCATORS Staff members who arrive late are expected to report to the Headmaster on arrival at school. A Fraction Time register is kept by the Deputy Principal, in which any time off taken by staff members, is recorded. On accumulation of 7 hours for CS educators and 8 hours for PS staff, a leave form must be competed for one days leave. Requests for time off should be given to the Headmaster in writing.

TRUANCY 1. LEARNERS 1.1 If a child is absent for more than 3 days without an explanation, the class educator of the grade is expected to contact the childs parents to ascertain the reason for absence.
