The Time Machine Deliverables Chapters 1-12

23/03/2012 CHAPTER 1 Ambience Chapter 1 AMB 1.1 - 3 minutes: The book begins in late 19 th century London, specifically, in the Time Travellers home in Richmond, a borough on the Thames River on the outskirts of London. Would be a modest size home. This is the smoking room, should have a fireplace, clock, sounds of carriages outside on the street (Very occasionally). Still quiet night time sounds but even softer than AMB1.1 Music Chapter 1 MUS 1.1 - .32 sec: Opening introduction should be more subtle as an introduction to the scene, not so epic yet. References: Classical Mahler Symphony No.1 Movt 1. 225 WPM .32 sec including fade. Intensity level 5 out of 10. MUS 1.2 - 1:05 min: This is where the time machine concept is first introduced. Although it is a familiar concept, the time traveller is revealing the possibility that it could be real not fiction. This should be quite an emotive piece one that foreshadows what is to come. Level 3 out of 10 MUS 1.3 - 50 sec: The first time we see a model of the time machine, should be wonder, excitement, curiosity, mistrust, scepticism and carry an element of the unknown. :50 sec Intensity level 4 MUS1.4 - 43 sec: Closing chapter, the Time Traveller declares his intention to explore time. This should have an element of danger, adventure and boldness. Intensity should be level 5 and should build the intensity of the story. SFX Chapter 1 SFX1.1 Sound of clock chiming half past the hour after dinner they have moved to the smoking room. SFX 1.1a Soft burning sounds of trying to re-light a cigar. SFX1.2 Sound of a large man moving in a leather chair. SFX1.2a Sound of writing on a chalkboard and drawing a line up and down and up again. CHAPTER 2 Ambience Chapter 2 AMB2.1 5 min: Drawing room Night, in the Time Travellers house, very soft night birds and insects, occasional movement sounds of the men in the room. VERY soft fireplace. AMB 2.2 1 min: Smoking room, night, soft birds and insects. Louder fire place. Music Chapter 2 MUS 2.1 same as MUS 1.2 MUS 2.2 - 1 min: Shock at seeing the Time Traveller in a dishevelled state. They are used to seeing him composed and they cant recognise the state he is in. Suspenseful, but not too heavy, music intensity level 4 MUS 2.3 - .35 sec: Solo instrument, preferably piano, delicate and suspenseful as we are about to hear the story. SFX Chapter 2 SFX 2.1 - Walking into drawing room wooden floor SFX 2.2 - Slight paper rustle (as if moving paper through air) SFX 2.3 - Soft bell pull for servants SFX 2.3a - Sounds of dinner plates, cutlery etc. SFX 2.4 - Very Quiet door creak and soft foot falls SFX 2.4a - Sounds of forks being dropped onto the plates and moving in chairs SFX 2.4b - Soft limping footsteps SFX 2.5 - Pouring a glass of champagne SFX 2.6 - Picking up the glass and drinking SFX 2.7 - More champagne being poured and drunk SFX 2.8 - Soft Pacing footsteps on wood floor SFX 2.9 - Soft placing of glass on table SFX 2.10 - Soft footsteps SFX 2.11 - Wooden door open SFX 2.12 - Wooden door close SFX 2.13 - Soft muffled footsteps going up stairs. Fading out. SFX 2.14 - Soft bell pull for servants (similar to sfx 2.3) SFX 2.15 - Random Sounds of cutlery on plates, dinner sounds. SFX 2.15.a as above in 2.15 slightly longer. SFX 2.15.b - one man eating SFX 2.16 - Slide of a glass across a table and a tap on the side of it SFX 2.17 - Pouring wine into glass SFX 2.15b - One man eating continued SFX 2.18 - Pushing plate on wood table SFX 2.19 - Picking up a cigar and cutting the end off SFX 2.21 - Soft bell pull for servants (similar to sfx 2.3 and 2.14) SFX 2.20 - Group walk into smoking room SFX 2.22 - The 6 men sit down into armchairs SFX 2.23 - Man settling into his armchair

CHAPTER 3 Ambience Chapter 3 AMB 3.1 Inside a lab in the Time Travellers house, soft Bunsen burners and bubbling. Still quiet day time sounds. AMB 3.1a Time Travel whooshing and flapping with machine noise make it sound like its progressing needs to be quite long. AMB 3.2 Stormy weather, torrents of rain and hail, lots of wind. AMB 3.3 Similar to 3.2 but slowly getting less intense AMB 3.4 Day time, nicer weather, sunshine, heat, birds soft rustle of trees, insects Music Chapter 3 MUS 3.1 Quite an epic theme because this is the first time travel event. CHAPTER 4 Ambience Chapter 4 AMB 4.1 Inside Eloi building, soft birds outside, movement of Eloi around the room. Large chamber with echo, marble floors AMB 4.1a Eloi at evening, emerging from the hall and entering the evening. AMB 4.2 Soft evening sounds, experiment with futuristic insect and animal sounds. No gnats or mosquitoes. AMB 4.3 Evening. Birds. In forest VERY PEACEFUL AMB 4.4 Night, in forest, more nocturnal sounds experiment with sounds from another time. Music Chapter 4 MUS 4.1 Entrance into Eloi, Should be the main theme of the city and the people. :45 seconds MUS 4.2 Realisation, first impression of the society, solo music reflective. Intensity 3. :45 sec MUS 4.3 Development of MUS 4.2 still first impressions but positive thinking the world has conquered its challenges from the time that he came from. SFX Chapter 4 SFX 4.1 Unscrew squeak and rattle SFX 4.2 Slide Levers into pocket SFX 4.3 Soft whispers and child like murmur SFX 4.4 Group stepping back on grass. SFX 4.5 Child like laugh and skipping towards time traveller SFX 4.7 Group walking on grass SFX 4.8 Group walking on cobbles/stone SFX 4.9 Lots of people sitting down on cushions. CHAPTER 5 Ambience Chapter 5 AMB 5.1 Inside Eloi building, dulled night time environment. Quiet. AMB 5.2 - Day, outside forest. Very close river. Early morning, birds soft insects. AMB 5.3 Early morning, near forest. Birds soft insects. AMB 5.3a Hot sun layered in AMB 5.4 LAYER. Tunnel sound/echo to show the proximity of the shaft

Music Chapter 5 MUS 5.1 He discovers the Time Machine is missing. Worried, anxious, disbelief level of intensity 6. 1:30 MUS 5.2 first thoughts of the development of the civilization above ground. Should be similar or reminiscent to theme in 4.3 MUS 5.3 Gentle theme for Weena 1:30 intensity level 3 MUS 5.4 Introduction of the Morlocks, new theme, foreboding, dangerous tension building, Intensity level 8 3 mins. CHAPTER 6 Ambience Chapter 6 AMB 6.1 Tunnel sound. Distant machines with lots of echo and verb. AMB 6.2 Dry Machine layer. Still some echo and reverb but closer to machines now. Music Chapter 6 MUS 6.1 - A sense of mystery, wonder, and an underlying danger here... More ambient in feel/tone than metered or melodic... almost long metallic sounds with a subtle bass drum pattern like a heartbeat (orchestral-amb)... build the suspense in our reader as the Time Traveller feels as he decides what he must now do - which is explore deeper into what hes discovered to be a haunting and unknown underworld of civilization... 1:00 min, 3-4/10 intensity... MUS 6.2 - A similar bass drum heart-beat feel here to add suspense to the scene. Minimal in nature, but should be made intense by some swells of horns or strings that are eerie and add tension as he is roused from sleep by these creatures he fears. :30, 5/10 intensity. MUS 6.3 - Similar to 5.4, the morlock theme - dark and dangerous as he sees this scene unfold before him, and his last match runs out!... :30, 6-8/10... MUS 6.4 - This music should be frightening and full of suspense and danger. Eerie swells/crescendos accompanied by more of a metered faster tempo/feel, repetitive underlying strings, etc... propelling us into his current adventure/nightmare as he is being pursued and nearly captured by the Morlocks. (chase scene!) 1:50 (ish), 9/10 intensity. SFX Chapter 6 SFX 6.1 Very soft padding of footsteps barely discernable SFX 6.2 Soft cloth and scuff sounds SFX 6.3 Feet and hands searching for grip, rock/pebble debris SFX 6.4 Soft cloth sounds pulling someones arm SFX 6.5 Rough cloth movement/body fall? SFX 6.6 Climbing on metal rungs, sometimes using wall (sfx 6.3) SFX 6.7 Soft metal bending sound, sound of rock crumbling and debris falling down tunnel. Also sounds of the time traveller struggling to right himself SFX 6.9 Swing off metal bars onto ground SFX 6.10 Soft body fall, painfully getting to the ground to lie down SFX 6.8 Similar to 6.6 SFX 6.12 Quickly pulling out box of matches SFX 6.11 Frightened movement on gravel or rock debris. SFX 6.14 Patter of the morlocks footsteps on gravel or stone... add some debris SFX 6.13 Lighting a match SFX 6.15 Soft echo footsteps and a hand running along a soft stone wall, more debris SFX 6.16 Strike of a match. Again..... CHAPTER 7 Ambience Chapter 7 Music Chapter 7 MUS 7.1 - My brain hears Holsts SATURN movement of The Planets suites... Something sweeping and with both epic beauty swells contrasted by low uncertainty and repetition... Cinematic and sweeping as it takes us through a mental conversation he has with himself, trying to reason whats just happened to him and what he should do next... Should end (or fade out) right as we enter night once again, and our fears (along with Weenas) return... 3:00 min or so, 5/10. MUS 7.2 - Similar in structure and feel to 7.1, but a shorter duration here... He finds some comfort and calm even in the night here as he gazes into the stars... Should have a feeling of vastness to it, calm yet an underlying uncertainty still (as we are in night which is our frightful time in this new strange world). Cinematic once again. 1:15 (ish) - 4-5/10 intensity. MUS 7.3 - Similar to 6.1. This should build up suspense, but not smack us in the face with it. It should be long tones, an underlying heart beat sort of bass drum feel... He is putting 2 and 2 together and realizing that what he saw the Morlocks eating the previous night was actually an Eloi that they captured... His horror... coming upon me should be evident in this build of music that takes us through to the end of Chapter 7. 1:30, 3-4/10 intensity. SFX Chapter 7 SFX 7.2 Hoisting up a child onto shoulder SFX 7.3 Putting child back onto the ground SFX 7.1 walking on grass SFX 7.4 Walking on grass, skipping child SFX 7.5 VERY soft rustle of pocket SFX 7.7 Picking up a child SFX 7.8 Walking on grass SFX 7.10 Tiredly sitting down SFX 7.9 Putting a child down on grass SFX 7.11 Cloth sounds (wrapping someone up in a coat) SFX 7.12 Waling on grass SFX 7.13 Picking fruit off of trees

CHAPTER 8 Ambience Chapter 8 AMB 8.1 INTERIOR Day time, nicer weather, birds soft rustle of trees, large space AMB 8.2 INTERIOR Day time, Afternoon in the ruins AMB 8.3 INTERIOR Evening, in the ruins Music Chapter 8 MUS 8.1 - Broad and sweeping tones, french horn and baritone type swells, not overly metered, more ambient in nature. We are looking in on the vast ruined museum here and imagining all its former glories and what it now must contain. Nothing too big, just something to add intrigue and emotion to this passage. 1:30, 2-3/10 intensity. MUS 8.2 - Similar to (or same as) 6.1 again, hinting at the presence of the Morlocks and the unknown :30sec, 3-4/10 intensity. MUS 8.3 - Moment of triumph as hes found matches which he knows the Morlocks are afraid of when lit. Nothing huge or sweeping here, but a hint of hope... :30, 2-3/10 intensity SFX Chapter 8 SFX 8.1 Fading in footsteps on grass SFX 8.3 A few more steps SFX 8.4 Brushing away dust from a glass case SFX 8.5 Clambering onto a metal machine SFX 8.6 Soft slap of hands on metal SFX 8.9 Child whimpering softly SFX 8.8 Snap of metal bar SFX 8.7 Slow bending of metal SFX 8.10 Slow steps on stone SFX 8.11 Walking up a stone staircase SFX 8.13 Opening of an airtight case SFX 8.12 Walking on stone floor SFX 8.14 Lighting of a match SFX 8.15 Dance SFX, rhythmic foot sounds and cloth rustles SFX 8.16 Picking up a glass jar SFX 8.17 Throwing a jar on the ground and it smashing SFX 8.18 Soft pocket rustle SFX 8.19 Fading footsteps on stone SFX 8.20 Soft scratching sound (of etching his name into stone) SFX 8.21 Walking on stone SFX 8.22 Smashing a glass case

CHAPTER 9 Ambience Chapter 9 AMB 9.1 - Sound of small outside fire catching dry twigs and wood etc. Still birds in the air and daytime outside sounds AMB 9.2 - Roaring forest fire

Music Chapter 9 MUS 9.1 - Similar to 6.1 again, hinting at the presence of the Morlocks before he discovers they are there in the text (musical foreshadowing a bit)... This also hints at the unknown of the fire as it begins to crawl out from where hes lit the first flame and grow and grow, sweeping across the forest... 1:00, 4/10 intensity. MUS 9.2 - Similar to 6.4 - Eerie and more full, metered with heavy low strings or a thumping bass drum (orchestral). We should feel the suspense and despair as he knows they are surrounded, and then towards the end of this cue, they have found him and close in... 1:15-1:30, 8/10 intensity. MUS 9.3 - Full battle type score here, as they have descended on him while he slept - his fire has mostly gone out, and all he has is his iron bar to use against them... which he does with brute force, killing a few Morlocks before they run away from him in fear... 1:00-1:15, 9-10/10 intensity. MUS 9.4 - Again, more epic and full on here, as the fire is engulfing him and any remaining fleeing Morlocks. Either a continuation of cue 9.3 or a new one with similar elements but more crashing and vigorous impacts... :40 sec, 10/10 intensity. MUS 9.5 - Exhausted, after a fight and ordeal, but still with an element of mystery to the sound... Long tones and gradual swells - nothing too big here, but we should feel a sense of mourning for Weena who is lost, and also a sense of exhaustion of The Time Traveler as he tries to figure out what to do next... 1:00-1:15, 5/10 intensity. SFX Chapter 9 SFX 9.2 Picking up firewood (rustle of bush occasionally) SFX 9.3 Dropping a pile of sticks and twigs SFX 9.5 Walking through bush. Footsteps on grass, occasional crack of twigs SFX 9.6 Patter of morlocks running around the pair SFX 9.4 Lighting a fire with a match then a soft crackle of fire that fades out when they walk off SFX 9.7 Putting a child down onto the ground SFX 9.8 Fumbling in pockets SFX 9.9 Lighting a match SFX 9.10 Rustle in pocket SFX 9.11 Sound of a match flaring up SFX 9.12 Picking up weena

CHAPTER 10 Ambience Chapter 10 AMB 10.1 - Interior but near large opening .Evening amb. Birds. In forest AMB 10.2 - Interior. Evening amb. Birds. In forest very dulled. Cave like sound.

Music Chapter 10 MUS 10.1 - Solo Piano or something simplistic here, but with a mournful tone and a longing sound.... He is intellectualizing what he has seen, and mourns for the human race and what it has become. This self-dialogue should have this simple accompaniment which gives added weight and some sadness to these words... 1:30 or less, 2-3/10 Intensity. MUS 10.2 - Broad and triumphant, but not happy sounding... He has found the Time Machine, so we need that sense of triumph, but he knows there is still work to do, and he suspects (and is correct in doing so) that there may be a trap around the corner waiting for him :30, 6/10 Intensity MUS 10.3 - Very similar to 9.4 - Violent and emotional as his glee quickly turns to fear and anxiety. The Morlocks are swarming to him again, and he is going to try to escape through the Time Machine... CHAPTER 11 Ambience Chapter 11 AMB 11.1 - Time travel AMB but slowing AMB 11.2 - Alien Like ENV. A soft deep drone, VERY QUIET lapping of waves on a shore. AMB 11.3 - Alien Like ENV. A soft deep drone, soft gusts of wind

This piece creates a sense of wonder and mystery and almost asks the question of whether things we are experiencing are real or not... Great fit here. 3:00, 2/10 intensity. Broad a cinematic, taking us on the time travel journey and into these unknowns with the Time Traveler. 2:30, 5/10 intensity. This will overlap to the end of this chapter and go with the reader through the Epilogue to close out the book. It leaves us by the end of the piece wondering the same thing as the Narrator... was it all real, or not?... 3:00-3:15, 2/10 Intensity.
