Listening: Its Their Story NOT their Strength. Dave Gibbons

Bible Study Teachers serving Youth Groups in modern America are less effective to actually teaching their students because they fail to do this one thing. Listen. Not just the, Uh huh, I See, Thats Great but genuine eye contacting, question asking, idea probing, head knotting, excitement driven listening. Without gaining as much information as possible about who they are, what they have gone through or what they are going through now will ultimately prevent us from seizing the opportunities to make a great impact. An effective teacher proves that they are trustworthy and worth the time. The most effective way to do this is to enter the hearts of our Youth. We do this by becoming intimate with them. You probably just raised your eyebrow saying, Intimacy? Were only teachers! Why intimacy? Ew! Well our perverted culture has lied to us equating intimacy with physical or emotional attraction. Biblically, this is not the case. Intimacy simple means private or exclusive sharing of knowledge about something or someone. We do not need to be emotional to be intimate with our students although this may result in some serious talk. All we need to do is be more open to listening to what they are saying, how they are saying what they are saying, why they saying to who they Class aptent taciti other words. litora torquent per conubia are saying:D. Asking Good Questions: Once the heart is opened, you are able to probe to root of their heart not just symptoms. Human Resources: If you have a student who just loves you, make them a resource to gain information for encouragement not blackmail.

Learn: Investing and immense amount of time.
This is probably the most difficult part of being a effective teacher. This is the part where most teachers will say that teaching is not for them or that the commitment is too much. The acceptance of this role, I would say, is the difference maker in an effective teacher and worthless one. When you begin to spend large amounts of time with your students and truly invest in them, you are able to intimately engage with them in levels you have never dreamed. Just by being there. Although I do not condone this language, I have had multiple students call me Dad. They response to me like this because I choose to spend the time even some fathers. Given, there are great fathers out there but we cannot ignore the large amount of fathers who would rather play golf than cultivate their childs soul. When we invest time while listening to their story and caring for their soul you will realize a few things. You start to get so close you gain knowledge of things your students friends dont even know. They wont have to talk to you and you know what they thinking; or youll know their weakness and their strengths without having to ask. The only way to gain this level of intimacy, which produces drastic influence, is to make large investments of time with them, listen to them and learn about them. Practically: Take notes of specific things your students say they like to help you remember. Look for patterns your students have in dress, speech, food, friends, and ideas Learn their love language, Book: Gary Chapman Watch for how they respond not what they respond Go out to eat, Movies, Parks, Pic-Nics, Zoos, Visit them, Help them with projects Get $$ From Church :DD.

Live: Find the special gift they are and glorify God.
Each student is special in that no one in the universe shares the same personal live story and experiences that they have. Our students are so unique and clever in their own ways that they deserve to be understood outside the umbrella of the generic Youth Kids or the word I despised the most, Freshman. Esther, Debby, Nahee, Jenna, Kayla, Gloria, Jenny, are not just freshman. Esther is an organizer, Debby is an artist, Jenna is a soccer Player, Kayla is a sketcher, Jenny is a dancer and Gloria is a musician. Our students are much more than they seem. Once we find all the mysteries of their lives we are able to truly engage the teaching with their personal lives and not just give abstract truths. It is only when we become intimate with them where we can customize the bible studies and presentations to help change their lives into Christian Atomic Missiles into their world. I guarantee that you will see the students excited for bible study. They will ask for what the next bible topic is and they will get depressed when OICC steals away bible study time. It brings so much joy into my heart when students come to my office each Sunday to ask questions about the study. I heard one of the boys students say, I cant wait for bible study This was students who, a few years ago, loathed coming to church. You dont see young people excited for bible study like this. Actually Ive never seen student excited about bible study. Were truly are blessed.

How to Prepare for the Class
Thought 1: Seek for places for Repentance (Brokenness, need, hurt, false logic, bondage, anxiety, guilt, worry, suffering, fear, envy, discouragement.) Looking to the Bible helps our students see clearly on the right way they ought to live their lives. Not only does it begin to open the eyes of the blind to see the way Jesus would but it also begins to remove some of the gunk off of their glasses that they may see Jesus clearly. Thought 2: Make Jesus the Hero, So that Students ultimately trust in him. (The One You Need Shane & Shane). Too many of our students are left to believe the lies they have heard from school, friends, media and even parents & church. It is our job to free them from the bondage of these incarcerating ideologies through teaching the piecing, convicting and freeing word of God. With these two thoughts in mind Find your Burden Prayer. The life blood of the Christian life. Pray for each student in your class throughout the week. This helps you better engage and show your love to them. o Pray against the enemy and darkness with the authority of Christ. You wont believe how much of a difference this makes when it comes to class participation. Just try it. o Pray and proclaim victory over your students. God will begin to open up a hope for the student and you sill begin to see who they will become, not who they are now. Readiness: Clearly wrestle with the material and understand the main points o o Test:

1. Be able to state the main point of the message in your own words. 2. Be able to provide multiple examples of this point. 3. Be able to argue for your point and against other counter points (Assuming you have thought through its claim of truth) 4. Be able to write it a concise sentence or phrase. 5. Be able to walk in knowing exactly what you are going to say Create an Outline: An outline simply helps us stay on track with the message we are telling. Though, there are time where we need tangents where we are led by the Holy Spirit but otherwise we need to be discipline because we are so prone to be distracted; especially when it is a difficult point we have to make. Generally my outlines are shown in the next section with all the 3 letter acronyms. Tips: o o o o

Ask Students for help because they are at the frontline. They know more than you think. Challenge them out of childhood. Kids are depressed, bored and causing trouble cause they have not purpose and nothing in life challenges them anymore. Personalize your Material so they know that your heart was put into it. Respect Children of all ages. In other words, go down to their level. Appreciate what they appreciate because you appreciate them. Learn about what they have to say. Keep you promises. Validate their claims.

How to Led the Class - My Outline and Process
Pray for the specific message in the bible study o Leaning on his spirit to transform our students o Pray for Students throughout the week. Each one. Going over the outline: giving a general overview o A road map will keep students engaged so that they know where youre going. o High Light the key point. o Tell them where to look out for Watch Video Clip o Engage with the Video i.e. pause during the important points, replay to emphasis points, ask students if they got the main points. o Speak your excitement Student participation o Break out into small groups and come up with o Fill in your personal blanks and Answer the So what? Questions. If you cannot explain why this is important then youve just wasted 40 minutes. Focus on how the points connect with their daily lives We are in the business of renewing the minds of our students out of the cultural incarceration into a kingdom redemptive mindset. I see Cultural incarceration as anything that ends with an ism. The good fight that teachers face is to dissect how we live according to the Biblical God glorifying mandate. Humanism, Nationalism, Rationalism, Moralism, Relativism, Pluralism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Taoism and among the believes systems reject and blatantly proclaim that they are lies. When our students see that they have been lied to and how their decisions are based on flawed hopes, Jesus comes in and rescues us. o FCF Fallen Condition Focus Bryan Chapell (Condition without God) o BBB - Ballfield, Bedroom, Billfold Voddie Bachum (Cultural Conditioning Awareness) o RRR Reject, Redeemer, Receive Mark Driscoll (Steps towards decision Making) Its Hard but its worth it all. Matthew 7:13-14 Christianity is most effective when we teach it as it is. True Christian life isHard. Matthew 7:13 clearly says the easy way leads to destruction. To add on to this, there is absolutely no honor, no respect, no merit, nor virtue living in the ease of life. People of most high honor are those who live a life of sacrifice, work hard, practice diligence, and overcome impossible obstacles. Christianity is the greatest obstacle in life because it calls us to surrender our most valued desires for the sake of Christ. Popularity, Riches, Comforts, Dreams, are given for Christ Sake. If your teaching does not reflect this mind-set I assure you no one will genuinely follow Christ. If it is just learn some principles of easy-believeism, then we have gone no where but into the hands of Satan himself.

Matthew 7:14 Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
