Socratic Seminar Preparation - Roberts For Socratic, re-visit The Great Gatsby (Chapters 1-3) for the following:

Five Connections you can make between the book and the following questions: (Write down specifically what happens, page numbers, and how it relates
to each questions?) 1. WORLD CONNECTION QUESTION: Write a question connecting the text to the real world.

Example: How can you relate to the choice that Tim, the narrator, had to make in the story Ambush? 2. CLOSE-ENDED QUESTION: Write a question about the text that will help everyone in the class come to an agreement about events or characters in the text. This question usually has a "correct" answer.

Example: What happened to the wife in The Story of an Hour when she found out her husband was alive? 3. OPEN-ENDED QUESTION: Write an insightful question about the text that will require proof and group discussion and "construction of logic" to discover or explore the answer to the question.

Example: In Adam, why was Heinz disappointed with the birth of his son? 4. UNIVERSAL THEME/ CORE QUESTION: Write a question dealing with a theme(s) of the text that will encourage group discussion about the universality of the text.

Example: After reading The Devil and Tom Walker, can you pick out why Toms desire for money did not serve him well? 5. LITERARY ANALYSIS QUESTION: Write a question dealing with HOW an author chose to compose a literary piece. How did the author manipulate point of view, characterization, poetic form, setting, mood, dialogue, etc.? For example?

Example: In A Rose for Emily, why is it important that the story is told through flashback?

Agree / Disagree Has anyone else had a similar . . .? Who has a different . . .?

Benefits / Burdens What are some of the reasons this wouldn't (would) be a good idea? Would anyone like to speak to the opposite side? Those are some reasons this would work; what reasons might it not work?

Clarification I'm not sure I understand . . .? Tell me more about . . .? Do you see gaps in my reasoning? Are you taking into account something different from what I have considered?

Support Questions Can you give us an example of . . .? Where in the story . . .? What would be a good reason for . . .? What is some evidence for . . .?

Point of View / Perspective How might she/he have felt . . .? What do you think he/she was thinking when . . .? He might not like that, but can you think of someone who would? _____________ has expressed a different opinion. Are there others? Do you have a different interpretation? Do you have different conclusions? How did you arrive at your view?

Cause and Effect Why do you think that happened? How could that have been prevented? Do you think that would happen that way again? Why? What are some reasons people . . .?
