May has me thinking about mental health. I know theres a stigma. Why are we so afraid to talk seriously about it? According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in four adults approximately 57.7 million Americans experience a mental health disorder in a given year. So, given the odds, we all know someone who may be silently suffering. Maybe its your coworker. Maybe its your aunt. Or, maybe its your yoga instructor. If someone you care about is struggling, dont you want to know so you can show your support and concern? Yes, May is mental health awareness month. Its the perfect time for us to eliminate the stigma and get the dialogue started! Most importantly, if you are one of the one in four, please know that you are not alone. Reach out to family, friends or your healthcare provider for support. Visit nami.org or nimh.nih.gov for more information. As I look over the 2012 National Health Observances calendar, there are so many illnesses to command our attention: arthritis; hepatitis; lupus; skin cancer; asthma; celiac disease; high blood pressure; and more just in the month of May. Observing these awareness months not only educates all of us, but also pushes us to show more compassion and to focus more closely on a healthy, happy lifestyle. Wed like to help you on your journey! In this issue, Tony Bednarowski shares with us some super foods we can include in our healthy diet. Whats that tapping sound? Alexandria Binkowski educates us on Emotional Freedom Technique (also known as tapping), which brings about needed emotional and energetic releases. And, Dr. Jodie educates us on managing our dogs medical care, food and environment in a naturally sensible way. Theres much more, so keep reading!

y healthy foods list consists of items that are super nutrient dense. That is, they have more nutrients per calorie than most other foods. They have also been proven to contain vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that will help prevent an array of chronic diseases. These super foods are perfect for heart-healthy, low-fat cooking and most fit perfectly into a lower-carb lifestyle as well.
3. Citrus fruits
The citrus bioflavonoids in oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit have anti-cancer and antioxidant properties. Many of these citrus bioflavonoids have also been shown to have antiinflammatory and blood clot inhibiting abilities.
2. Broccoli
Broccoli (and other cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower and cabbage) helps fight cancer, especially that of the breast, colon and lung. It boosts the immune system. Broccoli also contains antioxidants and a substance called sulforaphane, which research has shown to be a powerful cancer fighter and preventer.
4. Nuts
Walnuts are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, a special type of fat that is essential for our bodies, but is not produced by the body. Omega-3 essential fatty acids protect us against heart disease and have the ability to help lower bad cholesterol.
www.naturespathways.com
7. Tomatoes
Tomatoes contain high levels of lycopene. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant and as such helps to protect the cells in our bodies from oxidative stress leading to free radical damage.
5. Salmon
The omega-3 fatty acids in salmon and other fatty fish help prevent heart disease and stroke by lowering the bodys rate of blood clotting. These fatty acids also smooth out the blood, helping stabilize blood sugar levels; thus protecting us against type 2 diabetes.
8. Turkey
Turkey is one of the leanest protein foods and is low in calories, making it an excellent healthy food choice. Turkey also contains selenium, which has been shown to inhibit cancer development, improve the immune system and aid in the stimulation of our thyroid hormone.
You can see that my list of super foods includes some of our favorites. By including these on a regular basis in a healthy diet, you can easily gain many health benefits. Making healthy food choices just got easier!

n reflecting back on my two pregnancies, I have to say there were some things that I wish I would have known. Though I dont know with certainty that it would have changed things for me, it definitely would have for my two unborn babies. Wanting to bring a healthy, happy baby into this world definitely was always my focus. We have to keep in mind that life happens and were not always fortunate enough to live the perfect, stress-free, healthy life that we want for our babies. For myself, remembering that whatever I ate or drank, my babies were eating and drinking also, was important. It goes without saying that any medications you take, drugs or smoking are also shared with your baby. What I didnt realize at the time was how your baby seriously is born into a world with a pallet similar to what he or she was fed in the womb. For my son, Logan, I ate primarily meat, potatoes and vegetables, and to this day he still craves the same foods at the age of 16. With my daughter and second child, Alix, I was more into the carbohydrates and sugars. So guess what? She is now and always has been my carb queen a diet I dont wish for any woman, particularly if youre trying to keep weight off. As for alcohol consumption, a sip of wine once in a while may not endanger your baby; however, you need to try as much as possible to avoid alcoholic drinks during the gestation period. This is because the quantity of alcohol that will harm your developing fetus is not really known. Pregnancy is usually one of the most memorable stages in a womans life, given that she is carrying another life inside of her. Pregnancy is also one of the most challenging phases in a womans

life. For me, the added weight with my second child, versus my first, was very difficult to deal with. Particularly when most of your time is consumed with the children constantly needing you after birth, finding time and energy to exercise becomes all too exhausting, more times than not. Taking my prenatal vitamins prior to bed was something that I learned in a hurry, so I could sleep through the horrible taste of them. Otherwise, they upset my stomach when ingested during the daytime, particularly if I drank a lot of water. Just as avoiding gestational diabetes during pregnancy is definitely a must, so are taking prenatal vitamins and eating healthy. Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar that starts or is first diagnosed during pregnancy. Usually there are no symptoms, or the symptoms are mild and not life threatening for a pregnant woman. The blood sugar or glucose level usually returns to normal after delivery. Exercise was always something that I had done prior to my pregnancies; however, increasing exercise with my first pregnancy was definitely not a good choice. I remember taking on a lifeguard certification course in my first trimester, which honestly was not a very bright thing to do, as it just added additional stress to my
www.naturespathways.com
body and my baby. Spotting blood, with added exercise, became very common for me. Thus, I learned in a hurry to exercise at a moderate level, as I had been prior to becoming pregnant. Starting new exercise routines at a higher level than your body is used to is definitely not encouraged. The best book that I read while pregnant was What To Expect When Youre Expecting, written by Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel, which now is in its fourth edition. What an amazing stepby-step pregnancy guide to have when expecting your first child. As with anything else, this definitely is a new and exciting chapter in your life. Always remember that from the air you breath, to the stress you incur, to the food you eat, to the feelings and voices you surround yourself with ~ your baby is right there with you through the good and not so good moments. Those first nine months definitely begin to shape the personality and sensitivity of your baby. Always question what your gut is uneasy or curious about during your pregnancy, because the health and happiness of your new family all starts with how you are living your life. Best wishes for a healthy and happy baby!

he medical term for itching is pruritus. Muller and Kirks Small Animal Dermatology text describes this as an unpleasant sensation that provokes the desire to scratch The skin is richly endowed by a network of sensory nerves and receptors The itch sensation may be modified by emotional factors and competing cutaneous sensations a host of chemical mediators have been implicated Anxiety, boredom or competing cutaneous sensations (e.g., pain, touch, heat and cold) can magnify or reduce the sensation For example, pruritus is often worse at night because other sensory input is low Stressful conditions may potentiate pruritus through the release of various opioid peptides. Kirks Current Veterinary Therapy XIII lists allergies, vaccines, numerous drugs, shampoos, dips and sprays as common products associated with pruritus, specifically, rabies, distemper and antibiotic injections are mentioned. One thing is for sure, allergies are complicated and multicausal. Rarely is an allergic individual only allergic to one thing. Everybody has an allergic threshold, above which allergic symptoms manifest. Allergy testing measures hypersensitivity responses to grasses, weeds, molds, fleas, dust mites and even human epidermis. (Yes, some pets are allergic to their guardians!) These tests cannot measure all allergens and they do not measure the cumulative effect of multiple allergens on an individuals immune system. Food allergy testing is often inaccurate and inconclusive, but surely some ingredients do cause some pets to scratch!

Snoopy is a bichon frise whose story exemplifies the importance of recognizing allergy triggers and how managing allergies in a healthy way can lead to a long, quality life. Snoopy presented at three years of age for euthanasia due to severe allergies. He had worn an e-collar for most of that time to prevent severe excoriation of his face if it were removed. He would rip out sections of fur and lick his paws incessantly. He suffered from frequent ear infections. He had been treated with antibiotics, antihistamines and steroids to no avail. An allergy test identified his sensitivity to June grass, ragweed, dust mites, cat dander, wheat, corn, lamb and venison. His symptoms manifest year round, but worsen in July, at night, with heat and when he is nervous or groomed. This curly, little white dog is now happy, comfortable and 13 years old! He has been drug-free for ten years. He eats a balanced, prey-concept raw diet that is free of all grains and starches, especially free of wheat and corn. Meats are rotated and never include lamb or venison. Omega-3 fatty acids from krill oil are used intermittently as a natural anti-inflammatory. He walks on pavement as much as possible, avoiding the grass. He sleeps (with cats unfortunately), but on hypoallergenic sheets which are washed frequently in hot water. There is a fan over the bed for warm nights. Furnace filters are changed frequently and the ducts in the home have been professionally cleaned. The groomer uses a special shampoo and never plucks his ears as this can damage the canal, increasing susceptibility to infection. During ragweed
www.naturespathways.com
season, Snoopy is bathed more frequently with a detox soak and, if necessary, is treated orally with an herbal blend of nettle and licorice. Once used for nervousness, a Chinese herbal called Shen Calmer is no longer needed. Snoopy never receives spot-on flea and tick preventatives. Most importantly, Snoopy is never re-vaccinated. Vaccine manufacturer inserts state, Vaccinate only healthy animals. A pet with chronic allergies certainly is not healthy. Also pets who are undergoing allergy treatment with steroids are immune suppressed and cannot respond properly to vaccines. Dont overburden a failing immune system of an allergic pet by giving an unnecessary or perhaps detrimental vaccine. Did you know that it is legal for a veterinarian in Wisconsin to issue a rabies waiver for an unhealthy pet? Dont expect to cure allergies. Suppressing symptoms is not curing allergies. Eliminating triggers is not curing allergies. However, these approaches, and supporting the immune system to enable it to process allergens appropriately, can certainly decrease the frequency and severity of allergic episodes. Strive to use treatments that do not have serious side effects. Avoid excessive antibiotics, antihistamines and steroids. Know what the medication is that your pet is receiving. Google it! Give the body the tools it needs to heal itself. Feed fresh, species appropriate foods. Mimic nature the best you can when making diet and treat choices for your pet. Did you know that it can take three months for a food allergen to leave the body? Remember that the next time the nice lady at the bank drive-up gives your dog a biscuit filled with wheat, soy, dye and artificial preservatives. So, if your pet starts scratching shortly after his spring visit to the vet, is it due to the vaccine, the treat he was given, the spot-on pesticide, the food component of the chewable heartworm pill, his anxiety or the grass outside? Dont push your pets immune tolerance over the threshold. Manage his medical care, food and environment in a naturally sensible way so that he can handle smelling the flowers!

with just a basic walking cool-down. By the time you get to 10 weeks, you should be able to run consistently for 25-30 minutes without stopping. Not bad for a former couch potato, huh? Do a Google search for couch-to-5K training programs or check out www.halhigdon.com for more information. Good luck! Question: Im looking to add some serious muscle mass and Im curious about the engineered weight gainers out on the market. In other words, do you think weight gainers should be used to gain weight? Answer: Weight gainer supplements can have a place when it comes to adding muscle, but heres my general philosophy on the matter. First of all, we know calories are of prime importance if gaining weight is the goal. We also know that some people simply cant eat enough to gain the type of weight that theyd like to. This means that liquid calories become pretty important because liquids obviously arent quite as filling as solid foods. But my personal preference would be to create my own weight gainer smoothies with real foods, like fruits, yogurt, protein powders, oats, milk and even things like peanut butter, frozen yogurt and a little bit of chocolate. Then, you can combine these beverages with some hearty meals, and youll be on your way to a bigger you in no time. If youve found a particular weight gainer supplement that you happen to like, and you can afford it, then you can certainly go that route, too. I just happen to be a food first kind of gal, and Ive always found my smoothies and shakes more palatable than what is on the market. In the end, do what you think is best, and dont forget to train for weight gain as well.

Get healthy, glowing, ready-forsummer skin with organic sugar scrub ......................................................................
By Caitlin Brotz
ummer is almost here, which means lots of fun in the sun, and undoubtedly along with that bare arms and legs. This year, when you first break out your favorite go-to summer shorts or tank, you may find your poor skin in need a little postwinter rehab. This year, I encourage you to incorporate organic sugar scrub into your daily or weekly beauty regime for fabulous, healthy, glowing, ready-for-summer skin. Sometimes using soap alone to cleanse skin is not enough to remove excess oil, impurities or dead skin cells. This is where an organic sugar scrub can be extremely beneficial. Sugar scrubs are good for all skin types and will help to exfoliate, clean skins surface, unclog pores, turnover cells and even minimize ingrown hairs. It can also help you get THE closest leg shave that you have ever experienced leaving legs oh-so-silky smooth. Today there is a wide variety of organic sugar scrubs on the market, or you can make your own. While sugar scrub in general is good for all skin types, confirm when purchasing or making any scrub that the oil base such as rice bran, olive or grapeseed is complimentary to your specific skin type. Most importantly, make sure that the sugar included is organic. Organic sugar is not refined as heavily as conventional sugar, and as a result, may contain more of the vitamins and enzymes that existed in the natural sugar cane plant. One of the most amazing properties found in an organic sugar is glycolic acid. This natural alpha hydroxy acid is used in many anti-aging and beautifying skin treatments for its ability to improve the skins appearance and texture. Glycolic acid is believed to help reduce wrinkles, scarring and even hyperpigmentation. It also protects against toxins and helps to exfoliate the skin, weakening the binding properties of lipids that hold dead skin cells together, exposing fresh and healthy live skin cells. When you regularly exfoliate your skin with a sugar scrub, youll quickly find your skin becoming healthier in appearance and
www.naturespathways.com
function. After dead skin has been exfoliated, your bodys largest organ is enabled to work more efficiently expelling toxins and taking in nutrients. Regular use of organic sugar scrub can also help to combat ingrown hairs that may pop up on your arms, legs or elsewhere on the body. By removing dead skin cells and helping the skin to become more moisturized and pliable, hairs can more easily release and point back out of the skin. For the best results, use a sugar scrub on legs while taking a shower. After rinsing the skin with a cleansing body wash, use scrub to exfoliating and condition the body. Spend a minute or two massaging the scrub on your skin, paying careful attention to dry areas like elbows and knees. Rinse the scrub, and with it all of your dead skins cells and dirt will be removed. If shaving, next shave legs as you normally would. The oil base will help to lubricate the razor leaving your legs looking and feeling amazingly refreshed and healthy. Try a scrub with a fragrance and herbal additions for an even more enjoyable experience. At Oliv 426, our customers like to build custom scrubs starting with an organic sugar base, and then selecting their choice of oil, fragrance and herbal blend for additional skin nurturing benefits. Try fragrant essential oils such as tea tree oil, known for its antiseptic properties to prevent or fight off ingrown hairs, or lavender oil, known to fight inflammation and redness, and herbs like heather or lavender, for detoxifying and balancing benefits. And last but not least, as with any beauty regime component, have fun with it! Your skin will thank you.

y first encounter with a homebirth mama and her 5-month-old son was during an Options in Childbirth class at the Mom and Pop Place in Neenah, Wis. Sure, Ive seen the documentaries like The Business of Being Born and What Babies Want, so Ive gotten some pretty great images of the process. But I had yet to see the end result the relationships of the family until now. They were the most bewitching pair I have ever seen and not necessarily because of physical attributes, though they were quite cute. It was the love they had for each other. I could see their connection as clear as day. So in tune with each other, they performed this amazing dance of bonding, breastfeeding, sleeping and playing and I observed this in a span of only 2 hours. This baby was so very alert and happy, smiling at everyone in the room individually as if to say, This is what you can have if you choose natural childbirth. This is the reward. A baby like me who has absolutely no doubt that he is wanted and loved and came into this world KNOWING that. He was born gently with love into an inviting place his own home. His mom held him fresh without cleaning him off first. He wasnt whisked away for a vaccine or to get ointment smeared into his eyes. This mother and child were allowed to do what nature intended them to do bond, float away on the euphoria of each others scents, fall in love and nourish one another. Nothing else was necessary.

This baby was so very alert and happy, smiling at everyone in the room individually as if to say, This is what you can have if you choose natural childbirth.
Since then, Ive met several more homebirth mama/baby pairs. Thomasa, a local natural parent, was kind enough to give her comparison of hospital and homebirth experiences, as shes done both between her four children. She felt that while in labor in the hospital, the restrictions were minimal aside from not being allowed to eat. For her, the big difference between homebirth and hospital birth was more glaring once baby arrived. The restrictive part was after I had the baby. This was all new to me. They kept wanting to take the baby away from me. When my first three were born at home, they were immediately placed on my chest and got to relax for some quite time. They checked the baby out while I was cuddling and bonding. In the hospital, I got a second for a quick hug and then they took her to check her vitals and everything. This freaked me out and after that I was labeled difficult because I wouldnt let them take her. They kept coming in and wanting to take her to the nursery so they could bathe her, let me get my rest and the list went on. Then, before we could leave, a pediatrician had to check her out to clear us. Because we do not vaccinate and I did not allow

Many women choose homebirth because theyve had a hospital birth and felt it lacked the love and warmth that should come with childbirth.
the Hep B vaccination to be given, he gave me a lecture that would make even a person that had not just given birth and had crazy hormone issues cry. When I asked Thomasa what shed like every mom to know about choosing a childbirth method, this is what she said. I would tell a mom that she just needs to listen to her gut. If having her baby in the comfort of her own home feels right to her then she should go with that. Society has many women believing that the only safe place to have a baby is in the hospital. Granted they have their place, but we were giving birth long before hospitals ever existed. When women go into a hospital to deliver without a clear birth plan they can be more easily lead down the path of what is best for the doctor and the hospital over what is best for the mom and the baby. Homebirths are totally focused on mom and the baby, the way it should be. Our society has come to rely heavily on the hospital and less on the woman who is having the baby. The fact is women know how to give birth. It is instinctual and it is intimate. If a birth experience ends up being scary or bewildering for either mom or baby, the trauma can indeed remain. Many women choose homebirth because theyve had a hospital birth and felt it lacked the love and warmth that should come with childbirth. Many women feel there is no way they could give birth outside the safe harbor of a hospital. It is your choice to make. My intent in writing this article is not to convince every pregnant woman to have a homebirth. Instead I just want to expose women to the idea that they have choices. Mothers know best when they know all their options, is my slogan after all.

the value of emotional release firsthand to relieve what was eating at her emotionally. It is not surprising in todays fast-faced, stressful world that people simply do not take the time to deal with inner turmoil and show themselves compassion and love. Waters draws upon both her nursing/medical background and creative, artistic talent as she continues to develop offerings that will facilitate peoples self-nurturing and overall health. Among her many services, Waters specializes in therapeutic bodywork, herbal medicine and emotional release work. Foot reflexology is at the heart of her practice. Starting out, this was Waters original offering; and her business slowly grew from there. Now, The Country Doctor since 1984 offers an extensive menu of services, including:
Reflexology
This service is offered to relieve stress, stimulate deep relaxation, improve blood supply and promote the unblocking of nerve impulses to balance the entire body. Joanne Bunkelman, of Fond du Lac, can attest to the benefits of reflexology. She has been seeing Waters for 15 years in an attempt to better manage her blood sugar levels. She admits that she was
skeptical at first, not sure what to expect; but after that initial appointment, she was hooked. It really helps keep my blood sugar under control, she says. I started on a weekly basis, then moved to biweekly and now I go on a monthly basis for maintenance. It makes a big difference! Bunkelman has avoided many of the complications that diabetics are susceptible to. I have had no foot problems, no immune system issues and no problems with wound healing, she explains. It is amazing to me how Renee can sense when something is bothering me, continues Bunkelman. I especially recommend reflexology to all of those full-time working moms out there. Its a great way for them to de-stress, release toxins and just feel so much better!
House calls
Waters also travels to the homes of the aging and disabled population. There is a huge need for this as our population ages, says Constance Row, executive director of the Maryland-based American Academy of Home Care Physicians. Waters is happy to make house calls for those who are not able to come to her, especially if it will help those individuals safely stay in their homes longer.
Holistic iridology
Traditional iridology dates back at least 3000 years and is based on the study of the irises of the human eyes. Waters, who is currently studying iridology level III, under Dr. Pesek, analyzes the color, fiber structures and other features of the irises, which reflect the clients genetic makeup and the strengths and weaknesses of their physical body. While it is not used for diagnosis of diseases, it can be used as an assessment for conditions and levels of health. This system is used to evaluate genetically inherited physical, emotional and mental predispositions that can be in a persons conscious awareness or subconscious, explains Waters.
Waters brings her naturopathic knowledge together with her therapeutic and artistic abilities in this special timeout for busy individuals. Clients are offered a variety of modalities to help them discover, balance and strengthen the mind, body, spirit connection: healing meditation, intuitive design, creative writing, color therapy, herbal medicine, emotional release work and various wellness ideas. Waters also offers nutritional health workups for people who want to take charge of their health using natural alternative and complementary medicine. During the two and one half hour visit, she takes a pH of your urine and saliva, checks your vita flex points, performs an iris analysis, takes a complete medical history, educates on detoxification and diet information, and provides a program that is tailored to your specific needs. Throughout Waters 28 years of experience in natural health, she has accumulated many recipes and innovative ideas to help the body heal and maintain homeostasis. She is also a Natures Sunshine manager and sells herbs to help her clients achieve optimal health. Waters is happy to speak or teach at workshops for your organization or retreats. The natural health field is really so simple; it doesnt have to be hard or complicated, according to Waters. I encourage people to give the natural, simple life a try. I am happy to help anyone on their journey, she adds. Contact Waters to learn more about her inspiring life.
whatsGROWINGon?
ome people believe you are what you eat. At Growing Power, we take it a step farther; we believe what you eat, to a certain degree, represents who you are. Of course, this stands truest for those of us who have the privilege of choice when determining our meals. There are, unfortunately, countless people and families who would like to eat better, but do not have the access or the resources to afford some of the healthier, locally produced food. Nonetheless, these families and individuals living in food desert neighborhoods, unwillingly represent the type of food that is most consumed in their locales fast food and highly processed convenient store snacks high in sugars and fats. Countless research and assessments have revealed that people living in food desert neighborhoods suffer a higher risk of poor health outcomes. For children especially, who have little control over their meals, this is devastating and a hard reality to swallow. At Growing Power, we are purposefully trying to shift the paradigm in which food is grown, distributed and consumed in the city. We have taken great care in our sustainable agricultural practices, from the seed we plant to the compost nurturing the plants growth, to our distribution system that strives to provide wholesome, affordable and locally grown food to people in all communities. Ultimately, we strive to transform the community food system in Milwaukee to be able to supply at least 10% of the food consumed by Milwaukee residents with locally grown produce. That would be a ten-fold increase from the current less than 1% sourced from local producers. With over 200 acres in production throughout Metro-Milwaukee, Growing Power is well on its way to achieving this goal. In fact, we have already served over 40,000 Milwaukee Public School students a locally grown snack from Growing Powers greenhouses. And, this spring we have prepared over 500,000 transplants to be planted in our fields; and our construction team is building greenhouses every day so we are able to provide healthy food year-round to the entire community. Our sustainable food production is impacting people everywhere. We are creating jobs, greening the city, and focusing our food distribution efforts to give people in all communities access to healthy, locally grown, fresh and affordable food. Our food production system keeps local dollars in the community. Traditionally, when we think you are what you eat we imagine only

Will Allen, son of a sharecropper, former professional basketball player, ex-corporate sales leader and longtime farmer, is recognized as among the preeminent thinkers of our time on agriculture and food policy. The founder and CEO of Growing Power Inc., a farm and community food center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Allen is widely considered the leading authority in the expanding field of urban agriculture. At Growing Power and in community food projects across the nation and around the world, Allen promotes the belief that all people, regardless of their economic circumstances, should have access to fresh, safe, affordable and nutritious foods at all times. Using methods he has developed over a lifetime, Allen trains community members to become community farmers, assuring them a secure source of good food without regard to political or economic forces. In 2008, Mr. Allen received the prestigious MacArthur Genius grant for his efforts to promote urban sustainable food systems. Later, in 2010, Mr. Allen joined First Lady Michelle Obama as she launched the White Houses Lets Move campaign to address issues affecting American youth and the risk of obesity. In 2010 Allen was also recognized as one of TIME magazines 100 Most Influential People in the World. Since then, Mr. Allen has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the James Beard Award in 2011, the NCAA Theodore Roosevelt Award (2012) and most recently the NEA Security Benefit Corporation Award for Outstanding Service to Public Education award in 2012 for his work with children, teachers and schools. On May 10th, Will Allens Good Food Revolution book will be released. Leana Nakielski, Growing Power Development Manager, co-authored this article.

it experiences a life. Sometimes the lives are similar, sometimes they are completely different. Just like dreams, each lifetime is a message. When the soul wakes up it may interpret the lifetimes symbolism in order to continue evolving just like we would interpret a dream to learn. Going back to your question, there may be many parts of you that are similar in each lifetime, just like in a dream. Our soul travels with the same clique called a soul family. Members of this family will experience lifetimes together over and over again. So you may feel like you know someone that youve never met. You also may deal with similar issues in many lifetimes, but the only thing that absolutely remains constant is your intuitive gifts. Those come directly from your spirit and you always use those gifts to fulfill your spirit, soul and each particular life purpose.
Tina, a Madison-based intuitive counselor and energy healer, is a lifelong student of the paranormal. She had her first clairvoyant vision at a young age and continues to see and hear energy. Tina is trained in clairvoyant reading and many modalities of energy healing, but through professional training she was disappointed in the methods many schools used to devalue everyones natural gifts. Tina started The Chakra House to teach how natural and easy it is to work with energy. She believes that everyone has natural psychic gifts and can access their abilities if they realized their potential.

hat is all the buzz about tapping? Let me tell you! It is all about Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT. Its origins lie in ancient Chinese medicine from 5000 years ago and the development of acupuncture, a healing technique that uses needles on areas on the energy meridians or the path through which the life-energy of our bodies flows. Acupuncture was not developed to treat emotional problems, but physical ones. EFT has also been named emotional acupuncture, of course, using a tapping technique instead of needles. It was developed to heal emotional problems. What practitioners of EFT have found is that the emotional and energetic releases brought about by EFT frequently result in profound physical healings. The Discovery Statement of EFT is that the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the bodys energy system. There has been a great deal of medical research done showing that stress causes chemical changes in the brain, and these changes influence the state of our physical wellbeing, as do unresolved emotional issues. More and more research on EFT has shown its positive efficacy on emotional issues. EFTs history is also based on Applied Kinesiology (which uses muscle testing to determine the appropriateness of any form of treatment), developed by Dr. George Goodheart. In the early 1960s, he substituted simple manual pressure, or tapping, for needles on acupuncture points and found that he could obtain the same beneficial results. In the early 1970s, Dr. John Diamond, a psychiatrist, took Dr. Goodhearts work a step further by developing Behavioral Kinesiology, which adds stating or thinking an affirmation (a positive statement) while at the same time manipulating acupuncture points.

In the early 1980s, Dr. Roger Callahan, who specialized in anxiety and phobias, put tapping and focusing on the problem he was trying to help his patients resolve together and that this technique would remove or lessen the fear causing the problem. His success was so great that he started to use this technique on other emotional issues. During his experimentations he found that he used specific sequences of acupoints for different emotional issues. He would use Applied Kinesiology to determine the sequence needed on an individualistic basis for each of his patients. He called these sequences algorithms. His method of treatment was known as The Callahan Techniques and later named Thought Field Therapy, or TFT, another form of tapping technique other than EFT. In the later 1980s, Dr. Patricia Carrington, psychologist, and Gary Craig, an engineer and personal performance coach who studied under Dr. Callahan tested Dr. Callahans techniques and found that a single algorithm method could be just as effective as the more elaborate procedures of TFT. This single algorithm method is the basis of EFT and can be used for a myriad of problems ranging from pain relief, anger, addictions, weight loss, anxiety, trauma, depression, fears and phobias, allergies, respiratory problems, blood pressure, school, sports and sexual performance issues, serious diseases (from migraines to cancer), relationship issues, womens, mens and childrens issues, to name a few. In other words, for almost everything. Gary Craig gave this method the name EFT. Dr. Carrington named her technique Acutap, but after studying EFT she started to only use this method. In 2000, Dr. Carrington developed the EFT Choices Method, which changes the process of EFT by adding individualized affirmations instead of the ones commonly used in Gary Craigs method. 27

Aloe .......................
By Cheryl Hosmer
loe is a succulent plant of the lily family (Liliaceae) that is indigenous to East and South Africa. It has been introduced across the warmer parts of the world and grows readily in the southern part of the U.S. There are quite a few varieties each offering varying amounts of active compounds. The variety Aloe Vera has been used for ages for its many healing properties. Having an aloe houseplant on hand is a must as herbal first aid. The best juices come from plants that are three years or older. The most common use for aloe vera, besides soothing burns, is for healing and soothing inflamed tissues, especially in the gastrointestinal tract. The effects on the gastrointestinal tract range from soothing stomach irritation, removing toxins from the colon, stimulating bile secretion and peristalsis, and reducing bowel transit time. Because of these effects on the gastrointestinal tract, aloe is recommended for many complaints from stomach to colon irritations. Aloe vera helps improve allergy symptoms by enhancing the removal of allergens and toxins from the body. Aloe vera stimulates cell regeneration and has been used to heal and mend tissues after radiation. Aloe can also be used as a natural underarm deodorant, or it can be applied to an incision to prevent scar tissue from forming. Aloe excels in healing many skin and mucous membrane ailments. A database of studies collected at GreenMedInfo.com includes benefits for IBS, burns, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, oral lichen planus and much more. The aloe leaf can be broken open and the juice used directly. If the juice is bottled, it must be preserved to stay fresh. The capsules of dehydrated aloe are handy to have in a first aid kit. The opened capsules can be mixed with water forming a paste to use topically for

sunburn. Or the capsules can be taken internally to soothe the stomach or absorb toxins from the bowel. The powdered aloe has more of a laxative effect, whereas the juice functions more as a yin tonic. It is rare, but some people can have an allergy to aloe vera, so apply a small amount to the underarm before using. Pregnant women should avoid taking aloe internally.

ell, its that time of year again when the fleas and ticks are starting to come alive and send everyone running to their vets with worry about heartworm and flea infestation; not to mention Lyme disease. With good reason! It can be a very serious situation to have your pet get any of these parasites. The almighty flea can not only be a real problem for your dog or cat, but it can also take what seems like forever to get rid of including all the work to get them out of the house and bedding. Even with bombing and a good flea comb, it can take weeks. Lyme disease can be a very painful inflammatory disease and, of course, the mosquito can do a lot of damage carrying heartworm. There are drugs that can be given, and usually are supplied by your local vet, for such things as fleas and ticks. Heartgard and Frontline would usually be the two suggested. Some vets recommend they be given 12 months a year. But, what many vets wont tell you is how many dogs outright die from applications of Frontline and that the side effects from Heartgard can be awful. The main ingredient found in Heartgard is called Ivermectin. Ivermectin is a prescribed medication that is often used to treat parasites in dogs. It has also been used to treat ear mites and as a heartworm preventive in dogs. Ivermectin can cause allergic reactions in some dogs. Symptoms can be wheezing, difficult breathing and swelling of lips, eyes and tongue. Symptoms of toxicity can

be vomiting, tremors, weakness, blindness, dilated pupils and lack of appetite. Other side effects while taking the medication can be dizziness, fever, joint pain, rashes and more. Using flea control products at the same time may even increase side effects. The good news is, there are a few wonderful products that can be used that are totally safe and will repel fleas, ticks, flies and mosquitoes. Neem sprays are of a natural nature, are totally harmless and repel the worst of the insects. Neem sprays can be sprayed on from weekly to about every two weeks to be safe. If
you are in an area that may be more infested, they are safe to use more often. Safe enough to use on yourself! Please consider using a safer product that can be used as often as needed with no side effects at all. Have a long and pest-free summer.

The basic recipe for EFT is: The Setup; The Sequence; 9 Gamut Procedure; The Sequence (again); The Reminder Phrase; and Adjustments for Subsequent Rounds. Your energy system is a set of subtle electrical circuits and is subject to a form of electrical interference that can block the balancing effect of the tapping. In the Setup Phase, the blockage (called Psychological Reversal) must be removed for the rest of the technique to work. A neutralizing affirmation is repeated three times while you rub your Sore Spot or tap on your Karate Chop point. The Sequence is the exact order of where to tap on the end points of the major energy meridians in the body and the method by which the energy block in the energy system is balanced out. You tap with your fingertips of the index and middle finger; tapping about seven times on each point while repeating a reminder phrase. The points are the eyebrow, side of eye, under eye, under nose, chin, collarbone, under arm, below nipple, side of thumb, index finger, middle finger, baby finger and karate chop. You also repeat your affirmation while tapping. The 9 Gamut Procedure fine tunes the brain by using eye movements, counting and humming to stimulate the brain. Through connecting nerves, certain parts of the brain are stimulated with the eye movements. The creative side of the brain, the right side, is engaged when you hum, and the digital side of the brain, the left, is engaged when you count. After the 9 Gamut Procedure, you repeat the sequence again. The Reminder Phase is simply a word or short phrase that describes the problem and is repeated out loud each time you tap one of the points in the Sequence. Subsequent Round Adjustments are done when only partial relief is achieved. The technique of EFT seems to be very simple and can be used by lay people and professionals with their clients, but it is not to be taken lightly. Our emotions and particular problems have layers to them and each layer must be dealt with to resolve the problem. EFT can do this but it should only be done with someone that is trained and skillful. There are not many side effects as this technique is not invasive and Gary Craig reported that at one time with over 100,000 people using the technique that under 1% had complaints. These were in the form of feeling nauseous, feeling worse, crying or other forms of distress due to bringing up memories that have been repressed. Some people can have these results just thinking about their problem or reliving a trauma or stressful memory so it is uncertain if EFT was the cause of the complaints. If EFT is a technique that you want to use by yourself, then get training. It is not advisable to go on the computer, get the steps and do it. As a holistic psychotherapist, energy therapist and EFT practitioner that studied under Gary Craig, I have seen situations where only a professional who is trained in their field and EFT will know how to handle a person if they have abreactions due to their serious illness or problem. The best policy to take is, Dont go where you dont belong. Use common sense and do not try to alleviate ailments that are beyond your capacity or training.

ermatology Associates of Wisconsin is a comprehensive dedicated skin disease practice offering services for patients of all ages, in convenient offices throughout the state of Wisconsin. Having numerous office locations has two benefits for our patients, says board-certified dermatologist, president and founder Dr. Kenneth Katz. First, when a patient has an acute problem such as a bad rash, hives, boils or shingles, we are actually able to see that patient the same day or the next day. We take a thorough, aggressive approach to treatment so we can bring relief as quickly as possible. Second, this proximity and convenience approach to practice location means most patients dont have to drive more than 20 minutes to receive the most comprehensive array of services available. High-quality care is only good if a patient can get to it, Dr. Katz points out. Our approach means patients can usually schedule nonurgent appointments in less than a week, and be seen promptly when they arrive for consultations and treatment. In this practice, emphasizes Dr. Katz, both expertise and personality are important: Patients may not remember where a doctor was trained, but they will remember a doctor who treats them kindly. Thats why we recruit our board-certified dermatologists from all across the country, seeking excellent credentials and compassionate, friendly people skills.

Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin has the states largest team of doctors who are fellowship-trained in Mohs Micrographic Skin Cancer Surgery. These doctors trained at some of the most prestigious centers in the country. In 2011 alone, they performed over 6,700 of these highly specialized procedures, placing them among the most experienced, as well. During Mohs surgery, we remove the cancer and then process the tissue so we can examine the surgical margin, explains Dr. Katz. Once all the cancer cells have been removed, we perform reconstructive surgery to restore the cosmetic appearance. All thats needed at
that point is time for the patient to heal. Developed by Dr. Frederic E. Mohs at the University of Wisconsin, this microscopically controlled surgery results in a cure rate above 99%, compared with 85% to 92% for traditional skin cancer surgery.
