INTRODUCT I ON

IB 6e1 02 .8-1 b Page 3

The electronic trip control unit described in this publication is a solid state, microprocessor controlled unit, used in conjunction with a power circuit breaker to protect power systems . The power circuits being protected are typically 3-phase, with and without a neutral connection, 50 or 60 Hz with AC RMS voltages between 20 8 and 600 volts . The unit will control continuous currents as high as 4200 amps, while ground currents may not exceed 1200 amps .

The MPSC-2000 trip control unit measures current to an accuracy of within 1% of the circuit breaker rating. The Voltage Interface Module (VIM) option measures voltage to an accuracy of within 1 !o of the circuit breaker rating, and power to within 2% of the circuit breaker rating .
The trip unit is completely self-powered, taking the the tripping energy from the current through the breaker without any auxiliary power supply . A battery is supplied for programming the control unit while the circuit breaker is deenergized . The complete control of the circuit breaker is achieved by a system comprising : (a) current sensors, (b) an electronic trip control unit, and (c) a magnetic latch trip device . The sensors, the electronic trip control device and magnetic latch are mounted a s an integral part of the circuit breaker to pr ovide com plete protection for overcurrent, short circu it and ground faults . Internal diagnost ic circuitry is provided to deter mi ne and visually identify the cause of circuit breake r tripping , as overload , short circuit or ground fault.

1 . FUNCTIONS.
The electronic trip control device provides the following four basic functions : 1 .1 Prote cti on Fu nctio n

Foutbasic trip elements within the unit perform the protective functions : Longtime, short time, instantaneous and ground .

1 .2 Information Fun ct io n An indicator (target) and an LCD screen display information for the tripping functions . The indicator shows if the device has issued a trip command . The LCD can then be polled to determine the type of trip . The LCD and keypad buttons are used to determine the settings of the unit . Arid LED indicates self -monitoring functions .

1 .3 Test Functions The unit can be connected to an external test set to check functions and settings . 1 . 4 Communication Functions The unit can be connected to switchgear mounted devices if they are connected to ABB INCOM Protocol .

2. SETTINGS .
2. 1 Range Selectio n

The range selector provides the primary amperage used as the base for the unit . It is either set for 1X or 0 .5X the breaker rating : Default is 1X .

If the short time unit is disabled, the instantaneous unit cannot be disabled . Default is 12 . 2.4.2 Trip time - There is no intentional delay in the instantaneous function . 2.4. 3 The instantaneous unit includes a j umper on the circuit board which eliminates the poss i bility of instantaneous and short time be i ng s im ultaneously disabled .

FIELD TESTING

(15)

IB 6. 1 . 2 e8-1 b Page 1 6 PROCEDURE FOR FI ELD TESTING THE M PSC-2000 S OLID STATE TRIP SYSTE M
There are two ways to evaluate the MPSC-2000 solid state trip system : primary current injection through the breaker main contacts ; and secondary current injection directly intoAhartrip device . Primary injection has the advantage of testing the current sensors and magnetic latch also . The following is a procedure for performing this field testing . Notes : 1 . Refer to time current curves TD-9651, T D -9652 and T D- 9653 (also in this appendix) . 2 . When checking calibration, disable the functions not being tested, or set them at their highest threshold and delay values . It is 2SeeC laOly tEportant to disable the Ground -function when testfng the other elements to prevent false tripping. 3 .3he circuit breaker must be closed before each test below. 4. Following ea ch test, check the MPSC-2000 event register, to ensure that the correct element tripped the breaker , especially if test results appear to be incorrect . s ection .5 and 6gi n t h e main 'body of th is instruction bulletin for instructions on setti ng the MPSC2000 . 6 . These procedures are written for primary injection . If the trip device is being tested by secondary current injection, use a special test cable available from AFB and follow the special instructions contained therewith .

/, 1 ! t! PUMP
4. Test for the actual threshold by increasing test current until the breaker trips . It is important to increase the current fast enough so that the breaker will not be tripped by the Long Time element prior to completion of the test. 5. The threshold tolerance is +/- 10% on all selector switch settings . Long-Time Threshold Tes t 1 . Either disable the trip elements not being tested or set them to their highest threshold value . 2 . It is recommended that the Range Selection be set to its lowest value to minimize the current required for this test ; however, it may be set to either available value . 3. Set the Long Time threshold . Set the delay to its minimum value . 4. Test for the actual threshold by increasing test current until the pelf Monitor light begins to blink quickly . The breaker should trip about 8-13 seconds later. 5. The threshold tolerance i s +1- 10% on all s e lector

Long-Time Delay Tes t 1 . Position other trip element selectors at their highest threshold value . 2. It is recommended that the Range Selection be set to its lowest value to minimize the current required for this test; however, it may be set to either available value . 3 . Set the Long Time threshold to its maximum setting . 4 . Set test current so that it represents three times (3X) the trip system Range Selection setting . Delays should be as follows :

Instantaneous or Short Time Threshold Test

1 . Either disable the trip elements not being tested, or set them to their highest threshold value . Set the Long Time Delay to its maximum setting . Set the Short Time delay to its minimum setting for Short Time tests . 2 . It is recommended that the Range Selection be set to its lowest value to minimize the current required for this test; however, it may be set to either available value . 3 . Response With ST 12t Behavior Defeated ("DES" or "OUT") MPSC-2 000 : M P S -C-3( I NST IT) ; MPS-C-4(ST .LT) ; and MPS-C5(ENST,d7,6T )
1 : This log-ooq~r~ph depicts the short-time response without Izt behavior . It the p`t choracteri is enabled ("I!T" or "IN"), then refer to TD-9653. If a ground function was odded to the trip system, then also refer to time-current curve TD-9652 for ground response . 2 : These purr?, are typical of single and three phase power functions for 50 ;' 60 Hz systems . If a trip function is not available on your unit, then ignore the corresponding curve . Curves were calibrated for a temperature range of 10-40 'C . The reset time for any trip function is 50 ms maximum . TE 3 : For any time band, the lower and upper limits define the time interval for which tripping will occur at a given ,multiple of rating current . If current exceeds the INST threshold, then the unit will trip the breaker by means of the instantaneou s -Function . If current less than th e INST threshold but greater than 90% of the ST threshold persists for a time up to the lowe r ST band limit, then the unit will trip the breaker through the short time lunation . If current greater than the the LT threshold but less than 90 % of the ST threshold persists unti l the lower LT band limit, then the unit will trip the breaker through the long time function . 4 : Use the circuit breaker only within its published short circuit current rating . Since, all trip values are selectable, they must be chosen to match the requirements of your power system .

5 : The instantaneous, short-time, long-time, and ground tripping functions operate independently . Trip thresholds are set as multiples of the rating current . The rating current is e0he r
50% or 100% of the trip system rating . EXAMPLE : An 800A K-Line breaker is set at a 50 % rating of 400A. If its threshold multipliers are (12) INST, (5) ST, and (0 .8) IT, then the thresholds ore 4800 A . 2000 A, and 320 A. respectively .
