A special
thank you
Morley War Memorial would like
to thank American Legion Post 554
and their Ladies Auxiliary for the
purchase of the wonderful fag pole
that has been placed at the memorial.
It looks great. Your continued sup-
port of the memorial and other com-
munity organizations is appreciated
more than you all know. Would like to
remind all patrons that the Legion is
always open to the public, located on
Northland Drive, serving breakfast,
lunch, and dinner. You can always
show your support for them by join-
ing in on activities they have planned,
or simply going in for a meal. So if
you know a member of the Legion, or
the Auxiliary, and think the fag pole
at the memorial looks great, let them
know you are one of many who appre-
ciate their contribution.. The Legion
Post 554 will also be replacing the
American Flag annually during their
Memorial Day Parade, that contribu-
tion is also very appreciated. Thank
you, thank you to all of you.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Scholarship available
The Science Excitement at Tri County
(SETC) Scholarship is a gift of Thomas and
Shirley Dean in memory of Shirley Eliza-
beth Tabaka, Shirley (Bradley 06) Deans
late grandmother, hero, and namesake.
Shirley Elizabeth recognized the value
of education and
wished to share that
with others by pur-
suing a degree in el-
ementary education,
which she fnanced
by working before
and throughout col-
lege. In accordance
to the donors desire
to support Shirley
Elizabeths inter-
est in an advanced
education that she
used to inspire fu-
ture generations, the
donors created this
scholarship to fnancially help the educa-
tion of students who are passionate about
science and their future education. In col-
laboration with both the Tri County Eng-
lish and science teachers, the curriculum
was designed to get middle school stu-
dents thinking about careers in science.
A science presentation given by Shirley
(Bradley 06) Dean will kickoff the annual
competition, where all eighth grade stu-
dents at Tri County Middle School will be
drafting an essay describing a science ca-
reer they are interested in, why they want
to pursue that career, and what education
is necessary to obtain that career. The es-
say will then be submitted to the awards
committee, who will determine the win-
ner of the scholarship. The winnings will
be used for college or technical school
upon graduation from Tri County High
School. The goal is to get students more
aware and excited about science in their
community.
The SETC Scholarship Endowment is
part of the Montcalm Panhandle Commu-
nity Fund family of funds. Contributions
to the SETC Scholarship can be made by
sending tax deductible donations to the

The event will bring Veterans and

Helping the
community garden
Did you know that the pan-
handle area has a community
garden? It is located at Heri-
tage United Methodist Church
on Kendaville Road in Pierson
Township. With the help of
volunteers and donations from
Saenz Greenhouse, MSU Ex-
tension and United Way, the
community garden produced
approximately 4000 pounds of
fresh produce for the clients of
Helping Hands last year. We all
know how costly fresh vegetables
are so it is nearly impossible for
Helping Hands to provide them
for their clients. During our frst
year we realized what a big un-
dertaking it was, but also how
very rewarding it was. Being able
to help others is what God calls
us to do. Now it is time to do it
again and this time we are ask-
ing for help from the entire com-
munity. We are holding a plan-
ning meeting at Heritage United
Methodist Church on April 30,
2012 at 6:00 p.m. to discuss
how the community garden can
best serve the clients of Helping
Hands. But, we need volunteers
and that is where you, the com-
munity, can help us. Once the
initial planting has happened,
we need volunteers to help with
weeding, harvest and delivery of
the vegetable to Helping Hands.
If you have any questions or
would like to volunteer but can-
not make the meeting, please
contact Brenda Hall at (616)
238-9110.

NOW OPEN
(NAPSI)According to the Na-
tional Oceanic and Atmospheric Ad-
ministration (NOAA), the 2011-2012
winter is the fourth warmest on re-
cord. The mild weather is triggering
an unusually early release of pollen
that causes pesky allergy symptoms.
Beyond the itchy eyes, sneezing and
runny nose, one overlooked side ef-
fect of allergies is dry or irritated
lips.
Managing allergy symptoms is
paramount to get through the sea-
son, and it starts with the skin, as
it is the frst line of defense, said
Dr. Charles Zugerman, associate
professor of clinical dermatology at
the Northwestern University Fein-
berg School of Medicine. Dry and
cracked lips cause fssures in the
skin, leaving them more susceptible
to infection. Additionally, by reliev-
ing the lip discomfort, allergy suf-
ferers also feel better, which in turn
helps them rest and recover.
Zugerman recommends keep-
ing a moisturizing lip balm on hand,
such as Blistex Cold & Allergy Lip
Soother, especially developed to
provide comforting relief and pro-
tection for lips that are feeling under
the weather due to allergies. A few
other ways to alleviate allergy symp-
toms include:
n Use an air purifer to remove
contaminants from the air, such as
dust, pollen and pet dander.
n Ensure that your vacuum has
a HEPA (high-effciency particulate
air) flter. A vacuum without this fl-
ter may make allergies and asthma
worse by disturbing and blowing the
dust particles in the air.
n Bathe in cool water and use a
mild soap without perfume or color-
ing.
n Wash your laundry in hot wa-
ter with a temperature of 130 de-
grees or greater.
n Change your clothing after
spending a lot of time outdoors to
keep the pollen out of the house.

SIDNEY Depression is to mental
health what the common cold is to physi-
cal health everyone will experience it
sometime in their life. But what about
chemical depression depression that
doesnt seem to have a cause like the
death of a loved one?
Clinical Licensed Master Social Work-
er Sue Ellen Pabst will lead the frst of four
presentations in Montcalm Community
Colleges spring Life-Long Learners Edu-
cational series as she explores Chemical
Depression and Understanding Depres-
sion on April 20 from 10 a.m. to noon in
room D305 in MCCs Beatrice E. Doser
Building on the colleges Sidney campus.
This presentation will help partici-
pants learn to recognize symptoms of
depression, how the brain might be the
cause of depression, what helps and what
hurts, and how to be a supportive friend
or family member to someone in pain.
Pabst owns Transitions Counseling
Services in Greenville and works with in-
dividuals, couples, groups and families as
an outpatient talk therapist. She also has
taught psychology, interpersonal commu-
nications and sociology courses at MCC.
Other LLL presentations include:
n Explore the weather with WZZM
Meteorologist George Lessens on May 4
from 10 a.m. to noon in room D305 in
MCCs Beatrice E. Doser Building on the
colleges Sidney campus. Have you ever
wondered how TV meteorologists prepare
and present our local weather forecast?
Lessens presents a behind-the-scenes
look at the making of West Michigans
proven most accurate forecast. Less-
ens has been passionate about weather
since the 1965 Palm Sunday tornadoes
hit West Michigan. He became WZZM
13s Chief Meteorologist in July 2001. In
October 2007, he became the longest-
tenured meteorologist at any single West
Michigan TV station. Lessens has been
recognized and honored with many dis-
tinguished awards including the Silver
Circle award given by the National Asso-
ciation of Television Arts and Sciences for
25 years or more of service. He is a six-
time winner of the Michigan Association
of Broadcasters Best Weathercast for
2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2005 and 2003.
He also swept the weather awards for
Best Weathercast and Merit Weather-
cast in 2003 and 2007 and he won two
Michigan Emmy Awards for Weather, in
2005 and 2009.
nDuring 1493 and Beyond, Les and
Shawn Morford will explore why earth-
worms, tobacco, potatoes, mosquitoes,
bird dung and Jamestown are all part
of the remarkable story of the momen-
tous global changes brought about by the
trans-oceanic movement of plants, ani-
mals and microorganisms, starting with
Christopher Columbuss frst trips to the
Americas. The Morfords will examine how
the sudden collision of unfamiliar ani-
mals, vegetables and diseases produced
wealth, misery, social upheaval and, ulti-
mately, the modern world. These stories
are largely based on the recent bestsell-
ing book, 1493, by Charles C. Mann.
This presentation is May 18 from 10 a.m.
to noon in room D305 in MCCs Beatrice
E. Doser Building on the colleges Sidney
campus. Les is an Instructor Emeritus at
MCC, where he taught social science and
economics for 25 years. He is a founding
member of the Life-Long Learners. Shawn
is a 1977 graduate of Greenville High
School and holds a Bachelors Degree in
Forestry from Michigan State University
and a PhD from the University of British
Columbia, Canada. She currently serves
as program manager for Rural Develop-
ment Initiatives, Inc., in Oregon.
n Learn about The History of Heri-
tage Village with MCC Dean of Instruc-
tion and Faculty Dr. Gary L. Hauck, on
June 1 from 10 a.m. to noon in room
D305 in MCCs Beatrice E. Doser Build-
ing on the colleges Sidney campus. This
presentation features slides and narrative
tracing the formation and development of
Montcalm Heritage Village as researched
by Dr. Hauck. Participants will explore
the progression of the vision of Heri-
tage Village from two buildings to more
than 25 structures during its 25-year his-
tory and learn about the people behind
the scenes. Hauck earned his PhD from
Michigan State University and has taught
humanities in the United States, Russia,
China and Ecuador. He is the author of
15 books. The most recent, The Story of
Heritage Village, is available through
Barnes and Noble and Amazon.
The LLL was organized in 1998 to
provide academic experiences for area
seniors.
Membership is open to those 55 years
of age or retired or semi-retired regard-
less of their formal education. The annual
membership fee is $8. Members attend

Announcing Candidacy
for
Township Clerk
Paid for by the committee to Elect Robin Sholty, 6317 Crooked Creek Dr,, Howard City, MI 49329
My name is Robin Sholty and
Im announcing my candidacy
for Reynolds Township Clerk.
Although I worked at the Lan-
sing State Journal for 30 years,
I was born and raised in small
towns. My career at the Jour-
nal included responsibilities
involving hiring, training, bud-
geting, purchasing, accounts
payable, advertising, promo-
tions, and general ofce man-
agement. In addition, my hus-
band Craig and I owned and
operated a small business in a
rural community. Because of my small town roots, Craig and I have
found Reynolds Township to be a warm community and see great
potential for its future.
I believe my past experience and my interest in local government will
allow me to serve you, the residents of our township.
In discussing my candidacy with other township residents, one of the
reoccurring comments was that the current township hours of 10 am
- 2 pm four days a week (closed Wednesday) left no convenient ac-
cessibility to conduct business. If elected, I would be at the ofce for
your convenience, beginning with evening hours from 5-7 every other
Thursday and would expand days and hours as needed. There would
be no misunderstanding; I work for you, the taxpayer.
I welcome the opportunity to answer questions or hear your concerns.
My e-mail address is rsholty@ymail.com
I would appreciate your vote at the August 7 Primary.
Respectfully, Robin Sholty
Hello, for those of you who
dont know me Im, Daniel

ness associates and many
other residents I am an-
nouncing my candidacy for
Township Supervisor.
I am a long time resident
and 1985 graduate of Tri
County. My wife Sherry,
also a Tri County graduate,
represents the third genera-
tion family (Kohn) living here. We have ve children. I repre-
sent the second generation of the family business Ron Fisk
Hardwoods where I am co-owner. As your Supervisor I would
work to create an atmosphere where all residents and busi-
nesses are respected, and that our Township is conducive to
growth and development. As a resident and businessman I un-
derstand many of the challenges and opportunities and would
work hard to represent you. If you have any suggestions, ques-
tions or concerns I would like to hear from you. My phone num-
ber is 231-937-4050 and my e-mail is sdzssne@frontier.com. I
would appreciate your consideration at the August 7th primary
election.
Respectfully, Daniel J. Fisk

Is It Time to Change?
A few weeks ago, Barb and I had the opportunity to see Bob Seger in concert (thank you, Bruce and Sally). It was a great concert
and an amazing performance by talented people. Rock music is no longer my favorite, but it induced great memories. I have also
learned that when an opportunity presents itself, I need to follow because there are lessons to be learned.
The lesson was in my observation of the crowd. The rst thing I saw was the incredible amount of beer that was being consumed.
This of course, necessitated many trips to the amazingly crowded rest rooms and a general disruption of the audience as people
were coming and going every two minutes to ll the tank and then empty it. I told one very drunken fellow who was drinking beer
as he was using the urinal to, just pour the beer in the toilet and cut out the middle man. He was not amused
The second observation was the deterioration of saneness as the consumption of beer increased. At rst everyone was having a
great time, singing, clapping, and dancing. This changed to a kind of rowdiness and then to belligerence and then wanting to ght
until two young men had to be removed from the crowd. It is too bad some people do not put limits on themselves, like one or
two drinks. Then the young men, their wives or girl friends, the people who had beer spilled on them and those of us who watched
the episode of Jerry Springer could have enjoyed the music.
The third observation was the distractedness of the audience. A huge number of people were using their cell phones during the
show, to send text messages, check email, etc. While cell phones are a fabulous convenience for urgent matters, it also shows the
general uneasiness of people. Many of us are deeply unsatised and cannot stay focused on what is going on at this moment. We
often want something different or to be somewhere else. Again our enjoyment of a night of entertainment would be better if we
could stay focused on what is happening now. We can learn to stay focused by intent and practice.
My fourth lesson was thinking about the words, smashed, trashed, in the toilet, out of control, wasted, hangover, disaster, etc.
All words used to describe the condition of our bodies after excessive use of alcohol. I am reminded of the recent email someone
sent me. It showed photos of the destructive power of tornados. This is what the inner workings of our bodies must look like after
any kind of excess. Yes, those damaged homes, towns, and lives can rebuild and recover, but things will never be exactly the same
as before. Some will never recover. And so it is with parts of our bodies that are trashed and wasted during
a night of FUN, they may never fully recover.
According to what we know about the Apo E Gene, some of us simply cannot tolerate the toxic effects
of alcohol. So, what can we do? We rst must decide to change. Then we start looking for solutions to
help us with that change. AA and Al Anon certainly have been a great help to many people. Prescription
Antabuse can be a big deterrent for the impulsive drinker. It will make you sick and vomit if you do drink.
Saner, safer medications are Homeopathic Nux Vomica 30C, one before going out to party and one in the
morning for the hangover and Hom. Aveena Sativa 3C once per day every day until things change. Both will
gradually reduce ones desire to drink.
There is nothing wrong with going out and having a lot of fun. There are ways to have great fun and not
destroy your body while doing it. For some of us it is time to change.
Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

More jobs than workers. At a recent job fair in Ann Arbor
there were more than twenty times as many jobs available as
there were qualied applicants, many in automotive industry-
related positions.
Michigan comeback. Manufacturing is leading the way to low
unemployment thanks largely to the success and comeback
of the auto industry. It has a trickle-down job effect. Auto
companies buy parts. Parts manufacturers buy functional sub-
assemblies. Manufacturers buy molds and dies from diemakers.
They buy rolled steel from mills, who buy raw materials, and
on down the line. The more companies in the chain of building
vehicles, and rebuilding the roads they run on, the more work.
Stats show it. The states March numbers show Michigan is
going back to work. Yet there are still available workers, and
an abundance of unlled jobs. Why?
Knowledge is in demand. In 1979-80, the rst desk-top
computers came rolling off the assembly line. Educators,
business, and industry knew the day would fast approach when
every person would have to be computer-savvy, not just people
who build computers and write computer software, not just
engineers who use them in rocket science, not just the IRS and
the bean counters in the Accounting department. Everyone.
A new kind of education. Elementary schools in the more
afuent neighborhoods were the rst to integrate keyboarding
and typing as required classes. But elementary teachers
couldnt even guess how to fully prepare their students for new
high school technology experiences. High schools looked for
teachers who were top-tech-savvy, to integrate technology in
high school classes. But those teachers hadnt yet been taught,
because colleges and universities were only beginning to nd
enough computer, math and engineering nerds to teach the rst
wave of their student teachers. And to the poorer schools and
school districts, the new educators and new technology came
even more slowly.
Failure of foresight. What many of us ostriches failed to do was
participate. We left it to the legislature and executive branches
of governments to magically produce the money to educate the
educators and to outt our schools with technology expensive
technology. We failed to insist that our tax money be routed
and rerouted into the technology revolution in education. And
privately, many of us failed to set our own example. Many
failed to push ourselves and our children to embrace the new
technology. (Ill bet 1/3 of all Michigan grandfathers still cant
turn a computer on.) Now, fully two generations of adults are
still struggling to catch up with technology.
How do we know? Once, working the line meant moving
parts, dunking parts, stacking parts and driving parts. No
longer. Now robots move, dunk, stack and drive parts. And auto
workers need one or two years of post-high school education to
qualify to run most lines. Without the education, job applicants
arent qualied. Which is why jobs continue to remain unlled
in Michigan.
Take responsibility. Of note, its still true that university
graduates earn ve times more money in their lifetimes
than non-college graduates. So it stands to reason that if we
individually take some responsibility to help provide a better
education for our children and their children, well help x the
unemployment problem and boost our childrens chances for
success in the future at the same time. Win-win. The question
for us is Where does the money come from?
529 Savings Plans or Prepaid College Plans. Or, how to save
money, keep tax-free earnings, educate grandchildren, and
put people to work. 529 Savings Plans are education savings
plans. 529 Plan funds can be used by children, grandchildren,
sometimes other relatives, in qualied schools nationwide. If
the children dont go on to college you get the money later
on. Much like a 401k plan, 403B plan or IRA, they offer you
choices of several investment options to choose from. And as
long as the Plans meet a few basic requirements, the earnings
are not taxed. They could be a tax-free retirement plan for
you.
Prepaid College Plans are slightly different, allowing you to
pre-pay all or part of the costs of an in-state public college
education. They may also be converted for use at private and
out-of-state colleges. The Private College 529 Plan is a separate
prepaid plan for private colleges. Both Plans are available
considerations in proper estate planning.
Call around. Colleges and universities can offer the plans. Try
your favorite university or college phone number rst. Or ask
your own retirement plan administrator if they sell 529 Plans.
Or inquire where you bank. Or online. Start the Plan as soon as
the child starts school. Just $20 a week could pay for two years
of college thats a couple six-packs, or a movie and dinner
a month for you and your spouse. And dont ask the family
money manager for permission, just do it. Blame me.
