MAGNUM H. X-Ray Generator. Service Manual Doc: 5Y-40-001 Revision 0 WARNING X-RAY EQUIPMENT X-RAY EQUIPMENT IS DANGEROUS TO BOTH PATIENT AND OPERATOR UNLESS MEASURES OF PROTECTION ARE STRICTLY OBSERVED Though this equipment is built to the highest standards of electrical and mechanical safety, the

useful X-ray beam becomes a source of danger in the hands of the unauthorized or unqualified operator. Excessive exposure to x-radiation causes damage to human tissue. Therefore, adequate precautions must be taken to prevent unauthorized or unqualified persons from operating this equipment or exposing themselves or others to its radiation. Before operation, persons qualified

and authorized to operate this equipment should be familiar with the Recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection, contained in Annals Number 26 of the IRCP, and with applicable national standards.

APELEM-DMS Group

MAGNUM H. X-Ray Generator. Service Manual Doc: 5Y-40-001 Revision 0 RADIATION PROTECTION Because the exposure to X-ray radiation may be damaging to health, use great care to provide protection against exposure to the primary beam. Some of the effects of X-ray radiation are cumulative and may

extend over a period of months or years. The best safety rule for X-ray operator is Avoid exposure to the primary beam at all times . Any object in the path of the primary beam produces secondary (scattered) radiation. The intensity of the secondary radiation is dependent upon the energy and intensity of the primary beam and the atomic

number for the object material struck by the primary beam. Secondary radiation may be of greater intensity than that of the radiation reaching the film. Take protective measures to safeguard against it. An effective protective measure is the use of lead shielding. To minimize dangerous exposure, use such items as lead screens, lead impregnated gloves, aprons, thyroid collars,

etc. The lead screen should contain a minimum of 2.0 mm of lead or equivalent and personal protective devices (aprons, gloves, etc.) must contain a minimum of 0.25 mm of lead or equivalent. For confirmation of the local requirements at your site, please refer to your Local Radiation Protection Rules as provided by your Radiation Protection Advisor.

While operating or servicing X-ray equipment, keep always not near than 2 meters from the focal spot and X-ray beam, protect the body and not expose hands, wrists, arms or any NOTES other part of the body to the primary beam.

Before proceed to achieve the Filament Calibration procedure, please keep the equipment switched on and in the calibration display for 15 minutes.

NOTES The filament control of the MAGNUM H Generator works with analogical tube current closed loop regulation, with the filament current as control parameter, this means that if the tube current during the exposure is different than the demanded value, the control will modify the mA value accordingly to obtain the right value of mA.

In this way we can assure that at the end of an exposure we have the right value of tube current and the right value of the filament current (in an exposure of more than 80msec). We use this working mode to perform the calibration. 5 5555. ....1 11110 0000. ....1 1111M MMMMA AAAAN NNNNU UUUUA

If you have a waveform Figure 49 you need to increase the filament current and repeat until you have a waveform Figure 50. c. Don t forget to press SEND before attempt any exposure. 8. Repeat

this procedure in all the mA stations in both focus. After this we have calibrated the long time PREP filament current. The generator has a boost system to put the filament at the right temperature quickly. To do that when PREP is pressed the filament control demands 1.5 Amps more than the filament current calibrated before during

a variable time. The objective is that when this extra current is removed the filament has risen the right working temperature (same temperature risen when we made 8 seconds PREP to calibrate the filament current). To do that we calibrate the filament voltage, this voltage is continuously read by the microcontroller and when it arrives to

the calibrated value the extra filament current will be removed.

This procedure must be accomplished in the whole tube before proceeding to the tube auto-calibration, as it has

not been working very often it is not possible to operate with high KV values without making the seasoning. Refer to the X-Ray Tube manufacturer documentation for further information related to the tube seasoning.

The manufacturers recommend the seasoning procedure, if it has been provided use always that one instead of the detailed below. NOTES

Just Low Speed exposures are recommended to the seasoning, for preventing the excessive accumulated heating in the stator coil housing or in the rotor bearings. NOTES

ALL X-RAY TUBES THAT HAVE NOT BEEN USED FOR MORE THAN EIGHT HOURS, MAY SUFFER A SHOCK BECAUSE OF THE HIGH TEMPERATURE IN CASE OF

USE WITH HIGH LEVELS OF mA AND KV AND IF NOT PROCEEDED TO A PREHEATING PROCEDURE. WARNING A COLD ANODE (MOLYBDEN) IS VERY FRAGILE AND IF IT IS HEATED SUDDENLY IT MAY BROKE BECAUSE OF THE HIGH TEMPERATURE AND THE TUBE BE PERMANENTLY DAMAGED.

The object of this board is to provide the power necessary to the stator windings in order to get the anode at the right speed in the specified time. To achieve this, a three phase IGBT inverter is implemented. This inverter is controlled by the microcontroller in PWM mode to obtain the right voltage and frequency independent of

the actual value of DC Bus voltage; first to accelerate and after to change these values to keep the anode rotating at the right speed with minimum power applied to the stator thus preventing tube overheating. The main tasks performed by the rotor micro controller:

Receive demands from the Main Control and process them

Read the input voltage to calculate the modulation corresponding to the actual DC Bus in order to always apply the required voltage to the stator. Perform the right modulation to command the power inverter to obtain the voltages required (voltage, frequency and phase) for both windings of the stator. Control the High Speed Module (S0015692) when present to

increase the DC-Bus voltage to the value needed to obtain the right stator voltage when the mains voltage is not enough for the stator requirement to accelerate quickly at high speed. Read the stator currents to be able to measure the stator impedance to assure that the right stator is connected and correctly wired in order to guarantee that

the anode is running at the right speed when the exposure is made.

MAGNUM H. X-Ray Generator. Service Manual Doc: 5Y-40-001 Revision 0 CHAPTER 8. MAINTENANCE 8.1 MAINTENANCE INFORMATION For a secure and continuous operation of the X-ray equipment, a periodical maintenance program has to be established. It is the owner's responsibility to carry out and to keep this maintenance.

Once the installation is finished, the MAGNUM H need a maintenance every 6 months.

NEVER ATTEMPT TO CLEAN ANY PART OF THE EQUIPMENT WHEN THE EQUIPMENT IS POWERED ON. SWITCH OFF THE LINE POWER SUPPLY BEFORE CLEANING. WARNING

ONLY SERVICE PERSONNEL SPECIFICALLY TRAINED ON MEDICAL X-RAY EQUIPMENT SHOULD WORK ON OR MAINTAIN

THIS EQUIPMENT. ALL MAINTENANCE MUST BE DONE BY THE APPROPRIATE MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL, QUALIFIED FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF THIS EQUIPMENT AND AWARE OF THE WARNING POTENTIAL DANGERS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS EQUIPMENT.

BE SURE THAT WATER NOR OTHER LIQUIDS CAN PENETRATE IN THE ELECTRICAL PARTS. THIS AVOIDS SHORT-CIRCUITS AND CORROSION FORMATION IN THE EQUIPMENT COMPONENTS.

WARNING Maintenance frequency can depend on determinate legal requirements of the country or state in which the equipment is installed. NOTES Always check the legislation and local normative when determining the maintenance calendar.

APELEM-DMS Group

MAGNUM H. X-Ray Generator. Service Manual Doc: 5Y-40-001 Revision 0 8.2 CONSOLE AND GENERATOR MISCELLANEOUS TESTS The user has to periodically check that the X-ray equipment has no defects or evident damages. Inform service personnel immediately about any evident defect or irregular operation in any equipment and do

not use any equipment suspicious of failure until the repair is made. Operation with faulty equipment can cause many security dangers, including the risk of higher radiation.

Check all the visual indicators (warning and state lights, technique indicators screens, etc.) to verify that they work properly. Check all the audible indicators (loudspeakers, whistles, etc.) to verify

that they work properly and check that the volume indicators are appropriate for the environment. Check if the interconnection cables and connectors are not damaged. 8.3 CLEANING ADVICES The equipment should be cleaned frequently, particularly if corroding chemicals are present.

Do not use anything but water and soft soap to clean the plastic surfaces. Other clean-

ing products may damage the plastic cover. Never use detergents, corrosive polishers, solvents or abrasives. Be sure that neither water nor other liquids can penetrate the equipment. This caution avoids short-circuits and corrosive formation in components. Disinfectant methods in use have to conform to legal regulations as well as any directives for disinfectants and protection against

explosions. If disinfectants which may form explosive gas mixtures are in use, these gases must be dissipated before the equipment is switched on again. Aspersion decontamination is not recommended because the disinfectant may penetrate in the X-ray equipment. If the room decontamination is carried out with an atomizer, it is recommended to SWITCH OFF the equipment,

to let it cool, and to cover it with a plastic bag. When the disinfectant cloud has disappeared, the plastic bag can be removed and the equipment can be disinfected just with a cloth. Use only a soft cloth, fluff free, and non-ammoniac glass cleaners to clean the tactile screen. Always damp the cloth before cleaning the screen.

Be sure to pulverize the liquid on the cloth, not on the screen, to prevent drops from filtrating into the screen or dirty the frame. Avoid abrasive cloths.

MAGNUM H. X-Ray Generator. Service Manual Doc: 5Y-40-001 Revision 0 8.4 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE THE MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES SHOWN IN THE FOLLOWING TABLE HAVE TO BE CARRIED OUT BY AUTHORIZED MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL ONLY. HOWEVER, THE OWNER OR THE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR, HAS TO PROGRAM THE SUGGESTED MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES, WHEN NECESSARY,

WARNING CONTACTING APELEM -DMS GROUPMEDICAL SYSTEMS TECHNICAL SERVICE. MAINTENANCE ITEM FREQUENCY PROCEDURE DAP Calibration According to local regulations Recheck and recalibrate the generator DAP measurer. Cleaning and greasing 6 months Clean and grease all the high voltage connections using a vapour test compound. Connections 6 months Check that all the high voltage connections are properly tightened. General

cleaning 6 months Clean the control console and the main cabinet as necessary. Consult cleaning indications on previous pages before cabinet Airing slots checking 6 months or when one of the following components are replaced: Tube, Filament Power Board, Main Control Board, High Voltage Tank. Carry the auto-calibration routine of the X-ray tube. Visible damages checking 12 months

Examine the following items searching for visible damages and change any damaged component: 1. The outer control console, including the membrane switch set. 2. The cable that goes from the control console to the generator main cabinet. 3. The hand-switch and the cable that connects it to the console. Open the generator cabinet and examine the unit, searching for

visible damages i.e.; absent or damaged earth connections, oil leaks, damaged wires, etc. Other 6 months Carry out any other test that is required by the legislation that governs this installation.

MAGNUM H. X-Ray Generator. Service Manual Doc: 5Y-40-001 Revision 0 8.5 AEC FUNCTIONAL TEST The following procedure can be used to verify that the AEC circuits operate in generators equipped with AEC (Automatic Exposure Control). Procedure Switch on the generator and select an appropriate image

receptor. Align the X-ray tube and the image receptor selected so that the central shaft is directly over the central field of the AEC capture device. Establish the distance between the focal point and the film plane at 40 inches (1 m). Select the AEC (2P) operation technique. Select central field, large focus. Minimum

exposure time With no objects in the radiation field, adjust the collimator or the shaft limiter device so that it projects a field of 10 x 10 inches (24 x 24 cm) on the image receptor. Select the following exposure parameters: 80 KVp, 100 mA and a protection mAs of 50, provided that it can

be selected by the operator; otherwise, the predetermined AEC protection values will be used. Carry out an exposure and verify that the mAs reading is inferior or equal to 2 mAs. Maximum exposure time Close completely the collimator or the shaft limiter device. Place a folded leaden apron on the image receptor.

Select the following exposure parameters: 60 KVp, 100 mA and a protection mAs of 50, provided that it can be selected by the operator; otherwise, the predetermined protection values will be used. Carry out an exposure and check that the error message "Reselect AEC parameters" appears on the console screen once the exposure is finished. This confirms

that the exposure continued until it was finished by the protection circuits of the generator.

APELEM-DMS Group

MAGNUM H. X-Ray Generator. Service Manual Doc: 5Y-40-001 Revision 0 CHAPTER 9. GENERATOR EXPOSURE TABLES The table that is exposed next, shows the mAs values that correspond to the pre-established values of mA and ms (operation in 3P). The table also shows the interval and the relation

between these loading factors. For example, if in the AEC operation the pre-established mAs protection limit is 50 mAs, and 100 mA are selected in such technique, then, the maximum exposure time that can be possible (at which the mAs protection limit is reached) are 500 ms. For the previous example, search in the column 100 mA until

reaching the value of 50 mAs. The value of the column on the left, 500 ms, is the maximum time allowed for the enunciated conditions. The Norm IEC 60601-2-7 requires that this information has to be supplied in an adequate format in order to expose it in a prominent place in the generator control console, or next

to it. The mA/TIME values depend on the nominal power of the tube. For certain tubes, some mA/ms selections are not available with the highest or lowest kV choices. NOTES The maximum output power of the MAGNUM H generator is 32, 40, 50, 65 or 80kW. The generator software does not allow

to select a combination of kV and mA that overpasses this NOTES maximum value. In case the parameter selection overpasses the generator maximum output power, in the touch screen appears the following error PARAMETERS RE SELECTION and the controls

NOTES + and corresponding to the parameters that need selec -

tion adjustment appears in red and in a blinking mode. It always has to be accomplished that: Maximum Power < kV x mA The shading cells that appear in the table correspond to the available values of mA when working in large Focus.
