Introduction The EC1 series controllers are for use in commercial refrigeration systems, primarily to control the refrigeration circuit of display cases or coldrooms. The compressor relay output is designed to control the direct switching for integral display cases or allow for a pumpdown cycle in conjunction with a solenoid valve up-stream of the TXV. Primary function of the controller is to maintain the control temperature (air sensor) at a pre-determined setpoint together with fan and defrost management. The EC1 series are used in more traditional refrigeration systems where TXVs are used to control superheat and would typically be used in stand alone applications. Application The functions of the EC1 series display case / coldroom controllers are described in the functional diagrams below: The air-in temperature sensor (7) controls the thermostat function with a deadband control loop. The defrost function is activated internally by fixed timing intervals for either electrical heater (3) or off-cycle (natural defrost) applications and is terminated using the dedicated temperature sensor (9) or the internal timer. The compressor relay (2) is controlled by the thermostat function and the fan (4) can be linked to the on/off control of the thermostat or remain permanently on. In case of power loss the controller will switch off automatically, creating an intrinsically safe system. A liquid line solenoid valve can be installed upstream of the TXV for pumpdown applications. The EC1 series model is a traditional case controller with a thermostat for temperature control used in conjunction with conventional TXV (solenoid valve optional).

Parameters r1 & r2 are used to set min./max. setpoint. Alarms AL (Low Temp. Alarm Limit) and AH (High Temp. Alarm Limit) are active after delay time A1 has elapsed. The alarms are inhibited at start-up by delay timer A2. Sensors Emerson NTC sensors are available with different cable lengths to meet specific customer's requirements for optimal positioning of the sensors. The Standard Sensor length is 1.5m. All sensors are hermetically sealed in a plastic housing for high reliability and long life. Sensors can be extended provided the connection between the sensor and the extension cable is hermetically sealed. Compressor Control The compressor relay is activated when the measured temperature exceeds the sum of Temperature Control Setpoint (St) and Control Deadband Differential (rd). However, the minimum stop delay time must elapse before the compressor can start. After a defrost, both the Draindown Time (d7) and the Fan Start Delay (Fd) must elapse before the compressor relay can be reactivated. Fan Control Depending upon the application, during normal operation the fans can be designed to operate continuously or switch on/off with the cooling demand. i.e. when the control temperature reaches the setpoint (St), the fans switch off with the compressor relay. In addition, the fans can remain on or off during the defrost cycle depending upon the requirements of the system.

Temperature Control The Emerson NTC air sensor (S1) is used for temperature control of the display case. The deadband control function is described in the diagram below. The horizontal axis represents the temperature. If the measured temperature exceeds the sum of Temperature Control Setpoint (St) and Control Deadband Differential (rd), the compressor relay is activated. The vertical axis represents cooling operation (1=cooling, 0=no cooling) with the control set by an air temperature sensor typically mounted in the air return. A control parameter allows switching off the evaporator fan during no cooling. i.e. S1 reaches the temp. setpoint (St). The minimum compressor stop delay timer (C2) must elapse before the compressor can restart.

Defrost Control EC1 series controllers allow local defrost management through the built-in defrost timer. Two basic defrost modes are available: Natural Defrost For medium temperature applications without defrost heaters. In this mode the evaporator fans typically remain on during the defrost period. Electrical Defrost All timing parameters can be selected to cover specific defrost modes. See the diagrams below for the function of compressor, defrost and fan output at defrost: Defrost can be activated after power up (d4 flag) and the delay (d5). The defrost will end either when the defrost termination temperature (dt) has been exceeded or after the maximum defrost duration (dP). The draindown delay (d7) and the fan delay (Fd) must elapse before the system can restart. The next defrost will occur after the specified defrost interval (dI). End of defrost is detected by the dedicated defrost temperature sensor (S5). Fans can be switched off during a defrost (F1 flag).

Display and Keypad Display indicates temperatures with 3 digits in the range of -45.5 to +110 and a resolution of 0.1 within a range of -45.5 to 99.9. The display unit can be switched from C to F. The C symbol is lit and clearly displayed when applicable. Otherwise, the temperature is F. When the units are changed, all temperature parameters in the controller need to be changed in the respective units. Indicator LEDs show the status of compressor, fan, defrost and programming active. A blinking LED indicates that the EC1 controller is trying to fulfill a task, but is prevented from doing so by another restraint in the system, typically a delay timer. An example of this would be the minimum compressor run time. A fast blinking LED signifies a forced function, continuous cooling or manual defrost. Operation and Commissioning Setup and commissioning of an EC1 series controller may be performed by using one of the following options: - Locally through the 4-button keypad. - Downloading a control parameter set from an EC1 programming key. - Refer to accessories list. For initial commissioning of a new installation the first EC1 can be commissioned via the dedicated menus with meaningful default values. Additional EC1 controllers with similar applications can be easily commissioned by uploading the parameter list from the first controller and then downloading it into subsequent controllers using the programming key. Safety Functions Various safety functions are available for use particularly when the EC1 is controlling the compressor directly. These safety features are used to prevent compressor damage and include a minimum compressor off time to prevent short cycling. Safe operating modes allow the system to continue to operate safely even when the signal is lost from a defective or disconnected sensor. The controller can be programmed to run with constant run and stop times using parameters C3 and C4.

Electrical Connection The EC1 series have built-in transformers for ease of installation (refer to selection chart). The controllers are double insulated and are supplied with a safety electrical cover. Caution should be made when removing this cover against electrical shock The EC1 series uses non-removable screw connectors and will accept cables from 0.14 to 1.5mm Accessories The EC1 Series are designed to operate using Emerson standard NTC temperature sensors. These are available in a variety of lengths (refer to table below). The EC1 Programming Key can be used to upload a set of control parameters from one controller and then be easily downloaded to other controllers with a similar function. The process only takes a few seconds.
