HP Quality Center Training Plan

ExecutiveSummary
HP Quality Center 10.0 is ready to push to all users and there are changes and additions to the software, compared to the previously available Version 9.0. Current and potential Quality Center users have new documentation to review in an effort to adopt the software. The Quality Center 10.0 user guide is 754 pages of technical reading and the simplified tutorial is 184 pages. Additionally, the HP provided Whats New? documentation for Versions 9.2 and 10.0 total more than 36 more pages of changes and additions. The documentation provided by HP is good, but according to several Quality Center users, reading the documentation while working in production is difficult. This plan represents the results of a learner/task/context analysis, the initial goals and tools of the instructional design phase, and the plan for training evaluation, both formative and summative. The goal of the plan is to systematically demonstrate the need for training, the methods of development and deployment of that training, and the methods of testing and evaluation for HP Quality Center 10.0 learning modules. Instruction will be broken into 10 modules, between 10 and 30 minutes long, with each module representing a complete unit of instruction. Learners will be able to watch one module to learn about a specific topic, without watching all preceding modules, allowing users to complete training and move to a production environment quickly, without sacrificing quality of instruction. All learning modules will be offered through myLearning, giving users convenient and familiar access in a learning system with established credibility. Further, managers can monitor HP Quality Center training by adding appropriate learning modules to their employees learning plans within myLearning. The training solutions developed in this plan will help HP Quality Center 10.0 be a powerful quality testing tool for GE. If it is true that software is only as good as the end user, this training will make HP Quality Center 10.0 as good as it can be.

HP Quality Center Training Plan

Introduction
Currently GE businesses are using or could benefit from using HP Quality Center for software Quality Assurance testing. Stakeholders include IT Project Managers, businesses supported by the software, and the end users. Though HP provides documentation with the software, the most useful documents are quite lengthy and most employees will not spend the time necessary to read the manuals (User Guide - 754 pages, Tutorial - 184 pages, Business Process Testing User Guide - 406 pages). (This project plan is based on the Seels and Glasgow Model (1990))

Phase1Analysis
ProblemAnalysis
Although HP Quality Center 9.0 has been available to businesses within GE, the software has not been widely used or used as designed. Now, HP Quality Center 10.0 is ready to push to all users and there are changes and additions to the software, compared to Version 9.0. Current and potential Quality Center users have new documentation to review in an effort to adopt the software. The Quality Center 10.0 User Guide is 754 pages of technical reading and the simplified tutorial is 184 pages long. Additionally, the HP provided Whats New documentation for Versions 9.2 and 10.0 total 36 more pages of changes and additions. The

HP Quality Center Training Plan documentation provided by HP is good, but according to several Quality Center users, reading the documentation while working in production is difficult. The graph below represents HPSD support tickets opened in 2009 and 2010 YTD. The red line representing 2010 stops in May, although the implementation of Quality Center 10 Production went live on June 5, 2010 and is not represented on the graph. Based on past upgrade performance and an increase in Quality Center users based on new dPMM requirements, the number of support tickets is likely to continue trending upward.

TDAdmin Customizing projects Customizing QC Administer user groups Administer users ContextAnalysis Most learners will take the learning modules in similar contexts, in their typical office environment, with computers using the GE Core Load, which includes, at a minimum: Windows XP Adobe Reader Adobe Flash Internet Explorer 6

HP Quality Center Training Plan All learning modules will be designed for use in the basic working environment of most learners. Due to the individual nature of the training, every learner represents a learning site, meaning the instructional design must be robust and capable of operating in the minimum computing environment, as identified above, to the maximum computing environment, which is a moving target. Because the instruction will be provided in myLearning, the performance context and the learning context are basically the same, with many learners completing learning modules using the same computer on which they will be performing live tasks. Further, the learning modules will simulate the lessons using the same software screens the learners will access once they transition from the learning environment to the production environment, meaning learners will be watching, learning, practicing, and performing in the same setting, using a similar set of tools. Managerial support is still an unknown as of this report. From initial observation and analysis, it appears that managerial support will directly relate to the number of managers who actively support HP Quality Center 10.0 as a viable and useful testing tool. Recently, the named user base for Quality Center has grown substantially, due in part to dPMM requirements. This trend will likely continue and managers will become increasingly supportive. Additionally, hosting the instruction in myLearning means managers will be able to easily add the modules to learners Learning Plans and then track completions. The one contextual issue that should be addressed is the solitary nature of using HP Quality Center. Testers usually test on a computer by themselves. Project Managers and Developers typically think in a team setting, but use Quality Center in a more solitary setting. Project Administrators certainly administer the site in a solitary fashion. Because of the solitary nature of using the software, users do not have the opportunity to share their experiences or ask questions of other users, more experienced or otherwise. Setting up a Community of Practice in Support Central will give users a place to create, collaborate, or even commiserate about all things HP Quality Center 10.0. the forum will also help administrators see the real issues behind performance problems, with the employees and the platform.

InstructionalStrategy
Developing software training for HP Quality Center 10.0 requires addressing two main audiences: Project Managers/Developers and QA Testers. The goals and needs of these to audiences are vastly different and the training must reflect that difference. Project Managers/Developers need a detailed view of the software, from the start of the process to wrap-

HP Quality Center Training Plan up, including reporting function. In contrast, QA Testers only need to know how to access, run, and complete tests, with as little technical intrusion as possible on their normal day. For QA Testers, the training should represent and easy-to-use software interface that will help them tell the project team if the software being tested is performing as designed. In order to address the andragogical nature of the instruction, all training will be chunked into learning modules between 10 and 30 minutes long. Any topic that requires more than 30 minutes of instruction will be broken into multiple modules. Additionally, the training will all be based on constructivist learning theories, which state learners need: Instruction which builds on previous knowledge and experience Relevant and meaningful learning experiences (i.e. what and why) Designs that engage multiple learning types (e.g. visual, auditory, and tactile learners) Control over their learning environment and schedule Quality feedback on performance Immediate application of learning materials

Modules will be designed to provide comfort to users, taking an although this is important and useful software, it is just learning another software programs like youve done many times before approach. The advanced technical nature of HP Quality Center 10.0 does not require corresponding complicated training. Also, conversational narration during the learning modules will engage learners and help them develop instructional meaning while they discover the relevance of the tasks to their actual job functions, answering the what and why questions of learning (what are you trying to teach me and why?) Once the what and why have been established through training descriptions and stated objectives, learners will be engaged in the learning modules through visual, auditory, and tactile strategies. The visual components will include PowerPoint style slides intermingled with screen capture graphics and video showing the actual software performing the tasks covered in the instruction. The auditory component will include video voice-overs and task cues for the start of the lesson, lesson transactions, and the end of the lesson. All modules will be branded with similar introductions and closings to express continuity from module to module. The tactile component will likely include interactive flash components, such as in module drag-and-drop exercises, which require learners to match button icons with their respective functions, as well as end-of-module quizzes, all meant to involve learners in the process and promote transfer to the normal task environment. The tactile components will address all three learning styles, with onscreen text and graphics, voice-overs providing instruction and feedback, and tactile learning involvement. Overall, the modules will be designed to provide immediate transfer and application from the training environment to live HP Quality Center 10.0 production. At the end of each module, learners should be able to recall and apply the module lesson, including understanding and using

HP Quality Center Training Plan any corresponding module job aides. Providing meaningful and relevant instruction may also encourage learners to refer their co-workers to the training, citing its ease and usefulness.

MaterialsDevelopment
All materials will be developed using Adobe Presenter, Techsmith Camtasia, and Techsmith SnagIt, including AICC compliant Java applets for reporting completions to myLearning. Final products will be delivered in SWF format, which uses the Adobe Flash player already loaded on all GE machines and ensures compatibility with the storage servers accessed by myLearning. Job aides will be designed with Adobe InDesign and Adobe Acrobat for maximum compatibility, requiring only Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is currently part of GEs Core Load.

DeliveryMethod
Course modules will be delivered via GEs myLearning platform, with modules offered as individually searchable with no prerequisites. The module design allows for viewing at any point in the series, without the need for further viewing. For example, a QA Tester can simply access the learning module for testing, complete the lesson and short quiz, and begin using the new knowledge immediately in HP Quality Center 10.0. Further, a developer can access myLearning, start with the Test Planning modules, and learn enough to quickly create a testing plan and add tests to the Test Lab for QA Testers to begin testing. MyLearning offers the best access for users across the GE spectrum of businesses and countries, with available 24X7 access and quality support for end users. Also, once granted, power user access to myLearning will allow quick course uploads and module adjustments, keeping the content as current as possible. Power user access is being arranged for two users, allowing redundancy.

FormativeEvaluation
Formative evaluation will begin on or before July 26, 2010 and extend to August 4, 2010. The testing group will consist of 25 users of varying degrees of experience with HP Quality Center 9.0, from no experience to regular users. The 25 users will be recruited based on job function and will contain a proportionate division of tasks, such that each learning module is tested 5-7 times by users who are characteristically matched to likely production users. The QA Testers will only evaluate the QA Tester module, while the remaining testers will evaluate multiple modules, encompassing several tasks within Quality Center. All materials, including learning modules and job aides, will be available to testers through the GE libraries page during the testing period and testing instructions with links will be delivered via email and through a kick-off meeting through WebEx (to be scheduled). After each

HP Quality Center Training Plan evaluation, testers will fill out a formative evaluation hosted on GEs SurveyCentral, comprised of Likert-style questions, open-ended questions regarding the testing experience, and questions about previous technical experience. The evaluations will be compiled and the results considered for module and job aide adjustments before launch. A full formative evaluation report will be available by August 6, 2010.
