Ingress Protection

The Ingress Protection [IP] Code indicates the degree of protection provided by enclosures for electrical and electronic equipment. The code is separated into two characteristic numerals, the first numeral indicates protection against access to hazardous parts and protection of equipment against ingress of solid foreign objects. The second numeral indicates protection of equipment against harmful ingress of water. Why does a product need to be IP Tested? The IP Standard is designed to test a product?s suitability for a specific environment. Many safety standards call up IP testing as a basic requirement for environmental testing against external influence such as water ingress, dust ingress and protection against contact with live parts. Grades of Protection Against Contact or Penetration of Solid Foreign Matter : Number Figure Protection Explanation People are not protected against accidental contact with charged or moving parts. Machines are not protected against penetration of solid foreign matter.

No Protection

Protects large surfaces from accidental contact with charged or Protection against moving parts inside the machine, penetration by large such as contact with hands but does solid matter [more than not protect against voluntary contact 50 mm dia] with these parts. Protects machine against penetration by solid matter with diameter >50mm Protection against penetration by medium sized solid matters [more than 12.5 mm dia] Protection against penetration by small solid matter [more than 2.5 mm dia] Protects fingers form accidental contact with charged or moving parts in side the machine. Protects against penetration by solid matter with diameter >12mm Protects tools, conductors, and similar objects with a thickness >2.5mm from contact from charged or moving parts inside the machine. Protects against penetration by solid matters with a diameter >2.5mm

Protects tools, conductors and similar Protection against objects with a thickness >1mm from penetration by very contact or moving parts inside the small solid matter machine. Prevents solid bodies with a [more than 1.0 mm dia] diameter >1mm such as small tools and wires from entering the machine. Completely protects from contact with charged or moving parts inside Protection against dust the machine. Portects against dust deposits [limited deposits. The quantity of dust allowed ingress, not harmful] to enter the machine is reduced to ensure the machine functions properly.

Protection against Completely protects from contact penetration of dust with charged or moving parts inside particles [dust-tight, no the machine. Totally prevents dust ingress] form entering machine.

Grades of Protection Against Water Penetration : Number 0 Figure Protection No protection Explanation No particular protection

Protection against Water drops, which fall water drops moving in perpendicularly, must not damage a perpendicular the machine. direction Protection against Water drops, which fall, at any water drops moving in angle up 15% from the vertical an oblique direction must not damage the machine. 0 [15 tilted] Protection against Water, which falls, at any angle up dripping water [sprays 60% from the vertical must not 0 to 60 from the damage the machine. vertical] Protection against spraying water [limited ingress permitted] Water sprayed from any direction against the machine must not cause damage.

Jets of water launched from any Protection against jets direction against the machine must of water not cause damage. Water, which penetrates the machine because of temporary flooding, such as rough sea, must not damage the machine. When the machine is immersed for a predetermined time, water must not enter in such quantities as to cause damage.

Protection against flooding Protection against immersion [between 15 cm and 1 m]

Protection against When the machine is submerged at submersion / a predetermined pressure for an continuous immersion undetermined period of time, water [test to be agreed, must not enter the machine in such but exceeding number quantities as to cause damage. 7]

Examples : IP67 : Totally protected against dust and protected against the effects of immersion between 15 cm and 1 m. IP65 : Dust tight and jet proof. IP56 : Ingress Protection - Dust-protected and protected against heavy sea
