COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course focuses on the behavioral aspects of management in terms of human, economic and physical variables. Principle theories of individual and group behavior in organizations are examined to appraise motivation, leadership and the communication process.

IN ADDITION: Students will develop management skills such as influencing, cooperating, decision making, handling conflicts and other skills necessary to achieve organizational objectives. Understanding behavior in organizations will be accomplished through self-assessment inventories, case analyses, class discussions and so on. COURSE OBJECTIVES Learn to work with individuals and groups. Understand the communication process in formal organizations Understand basic concepts of group dynamics and interpersonal behavior

Examine various leadership models. Examine sources and effective uses of power and influence. Understand conflict, stress and change management Set foundations for leadership roles for effective organizational effectiveness. Understand the role of organizational structure and design Understand the influence of psychological and sociological forces affecting human behavior. Examine the concept of organizational development (OD)

TEACHING METHODOLOGY
Teaching methodology will involve combinations of: class notes; reading assignments from the book; readings from directed references to related articles in business (academic) journals and textbooks; discussions of case studies; role playing in the class room setting; a mid-term, a final exam and quizzes as needed. Meaningful class participation will affect the final grade. Students are expected to use library resources. Ask for textbook(s) under the instructors name at the desk.

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION
Performance will be primarily evaluated on the basis of a mid-term examination, a final examination, and a term paper with a presentation; term-paper topics will be assigned by the second week. Classroom attendance and meaningful participation will contribute to your final grade. Make-up exams for the mid-term examination will not be given except under extraordinary circumstances such as an illness, but supported with a doctors certificate. Students will be responsible for ontime presentations of all homework assignments and reading assignments even those given in their absence.

TERM PAPER AND PRESENTATION


There will be one required term project, which will be a MINIMUM of five (5) doublespaced typewritten sheets excluding the cover and any reference page. This paper must be of a very high quality: well-researched, and well-organized with consistent internal and external referencing. It also has to be well-presented. Suggested topics will

also be posted on Blackboard. A hard copy of your term paper must be handed in no later than one week before the close of the semester. There is also a required five-minute presentation, based on your papers subject matter. Grading criteria will also be given. MARKS: (Weightings subject to change without prior notice)
