Well, lets see what is going on!! I have a couple of loads of wood that I cut over the winter, while doing some thinning, that is now all cut and split. I have also been out this spring doing a bit more thinning and patch cutting. I am going to take it easy though until we get a woodlot management plan in place, because that will help set the priorities in terms of what should be done first. For those individuals who own woodlots and want to take some proactive measures to improve the quality and quantity of wood that is growing, there are remarkably inexpensive services available by joining a local wood co-op. For those who just want to sit on their property and let mother nature do her thing, that is fine also, just consider protecting the property through land trusts or easements that will stop future owners from clear cutting what has taken many, many years to develop. Thanks to the dry spells we have had this spring, I have gotten out to do some more work on my woods road. Unfortunately, after just one heavy rain it takes about a week for it to dry out and useable again. My biggest hope, is that before winter, I will have all of the ditching done so that it should only take a fairly short time to dry out and be usable after a heavy downpour. Back in the woods, we are scouting along the roadside for desirable small trees such as spruce, pine and some cedar, and replanting them in areas that are exclusively fir and/or birch. In just a hundred or so short years, the forest makeup of trees should be significantly better. Every time I walk by my dead hemlock remains, I wonder if there is such a thing as Tree CPR. If there is, I suspect that the time for which it might work is long past. Oh Sigh!! Outside of the woods, we are doing a bit more landscaping and planting, but nothing major so far. The grand-grand kids are both very cute and lovable, the missus is still annoying and The Jet seems to be following in her foot steps. (Maybe more later.) On the lighter side: 1. Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak 2. He who laughs last, thinks the slowest. 3. Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine. 4. Those who live by the sword get shot by those who dont. 5. Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool. 800

The annual KVC Bikaru goes on Sunday, May 27th and this recreational fun event is the kick-off for preparations for the Kennebecasis Valley Challenge Marathon/Relay in the fall. The 7k run circles the town of Hampton and begins at 8:00am on the Square; the 25k bike from Hampton to the Cameron Road in Rothesay begins on Main Street, Hampton at 9:15am; the 7k kayak from Cameron Road Beach to the Kennebecasis Kayaking Club in Renforth begins at 11:15am; the day concludes with a noon hour meal (compliments of Vitos Restaurant) at the Renforth Community Centre. This event is sponsored by the Irving Oil KVC Marathon, Town of Rothesay Recreation Department and River Bay Adventures. A charge of $7 will pay for student monitors for the event who are from Rothesay High School and they will be using the proceeds for a school rebuild project in the Dominican Republic Monitoring services for bikes in Hampton and kayaks in Rothesay will be provided. by Claire McCormick Its almost here! The end of the year, and the Grade 8 Semi Formal! The excitement is building for the end-of-the-year dance every Hampton Middle School kid lives for! If you have never heard of the Semi Formal dance, it is a dinner and dance for the graduating Grade 8 students and an end-of-the-year dance for Grades 6 and 7 students. The dinner is only for the eighth graders and is when they receive their awards for the year. If you have ever been to HMSs Semi Formal you have seen the magnificent dresses, hair and shoes people wear. Its all part of the dance, and I have to say, its my favourite part. Along with this, its the most romantic dance of the year with boys bringing their dates corsages and the dance floor filled with couples slow dancing at every slow song. Of course with Semi being one of the happiest dances of the year, it is also, by far, the most emotional, especially for the graduating Grade 8 students. They wont be coming back next year, like the other grades. Its the last time they will get to see familiar faces, classrooms, halls and lockers so, for them, its almost like a good-bye dance. To sum up, the end of the year is almost here, and so is Semi. Its a fun, enjoyable and emotional ride for both teachers and students alike. Claire McCormick is a Grade 8 student at HMS. 114

A Ladies Only Sprint Triathlon will be held on Sunday, June 10th in Hampton. This unique event the only one in Atlantic Canada will comprise of a 500m swim, 20km cycle and a 5km run. In addition to the individual competition there will also be a Team Event comprising of two or three competitors and a Junior Wave for competitors ages 16-19 years (in an attempt to build a team for the Canada Games 2013). The Hampton Ladies Triathlon will start at 8:30am from the Hampton Community Pool (Main Street). This event is being held as a fundraiser for Breast Cancer. The Peninsula Pearls held their regular meeting on March 26th at the Moss Glen Legion. Guest speaker was Holly Reid, from Brenans Funeral Home, who spoke to us about funeral planning. If you plan ahead the cost of the funeral will not go up. Cremation is cheaper than a funeral with a casket, however everyone is not in favour of cremation. Lunch was delicious and was served by Group 1. The 50/50 was won by Jean, door prizes by Joanne, Sheila and Audrey. Due to Easter Monday, our Easter meeting was held on April 16th with a pot luck and our Easter Bonnet Parade; what a great selection of decorated Easter Hats! Everyone did a terrific job on their hats. Prizes were given to everyone by numbers drawn which matched the number on your hat. We then paraded around the hall and pictures were taken. 50/50 was won by Lloyd. The next meeting, our annual meeting, was held on April 30th. The Sussex Valley All Terrain Vehicle club (SVAT Club) will be hosting their 3rd Annual Presidents Run on Saturday, May 19th from Adairs Wilderness Lodge leaving the lodge at 9:00am, after registration. The SVAT Club was formed in the early 1990s to promote ATV riding and we currently have 154 members. The club also supports various charities including the Childrens Wish Foundation and the Cancer Society. Proceeds from this years Presidents Run will be split between charity and improving our trails. The Sussex area trail system is also critical to the Saint John and Petitcodiac ATV riders, as we are the link between these two. When the hottest hangout in town straddles the Canada/U.S. border, you get the best of both worlds: strong Canadian beer at weak American prices, and the hottest entertainment on either side of the line.
After the life giving rains that we were blessed with in late April the gardens are off to a rollicking start and the plant outlets are bursting with an amazing variety of perennial plants. All very exciting and enticing but, be warned! Most of these will have been raised in an unheated but protective, covered environment. This means care has to be taken to harden them off, an extra cool night or blustery wind could easily destroy them; the best method is to expose them to the elements on days that are fairly cloudy, still and mild, increasing the time spent outside a little each day until they become sturdy. Care needs to be taken to insure that they dont dry out or become waterlogged by too much juice! Avoid purchasing annuals no matter how attractive the price, there will be a possibility of frost until after the full moon on June 4th. Keeping them healthy for a prolonged period can be time consuming, its better to wait a couple of weeks and concentrate on the many gardening jobs that need attention. Chief among these is the spring pruning, by now the rose bushes have leafed out and pruning out the dead wood while the leaves are small is easy to do without damaging the bushes. All dead wood should be trimmed back to the first really healthy leaf buds, making sure that the pruners are sharp; a ragged cut is an invitation to the pests that cause disease. The Forsythia has finished its spectacular display and a pruning with an eye on the overall shape that you would like to see is in order. One great virtue of them is, that a new plant can be produced simply by taking a low growing branch and burying it into the ground with a small rock on top to anchor it, by the end of summer it will have rooted and can be planted in a new location. Deer are again on the rampage and favorite among the early diners are the day lilies. Any smelly concoction will help to ward them off, 1 to 9 parts ammonia with water and a little added oil and soap; a mixture of beaten egg with powdered milk, oil and soap; granulated garlic with egg, soap and oil. These can be concocted fairly cheaply, best sprayed on a still, dry day at a time when you can bung your clothes into a washing machine and head for the shower. The commercially manufactured Bobbex seems to have been quite successful. Good Luck and happy gardening. 805

The Annual General Meeting of the Hampton Area Chamber of Commerce was held on Monday, April 30th at the Lighthouse River Centre. More than 50 members and guests enjoyed a buffet dinner catered by Hollys Restaurant prior to the business meeting. Retiring President Sheryl Moore opened the meeting and reviewed the activities of the Chamber over a very active year that saw membership grow from 77 to 95, and the formation of a number of new committees. HACC has been working in cooperation with the Town of Hampton to promote Hampton as a Destination, and to encourage support of local business. Following the election of Officers and Directors for the coming year, elected President Barbara Curry led the meeting in expressing appreciation to Sheryl and retiring Board members Adrian Gratwick, Carol Anne Forsgren and Tanya Whittaker Garnett. The Executive for the coming year are: Barbara Curry, President; Sharon Worden, Vice-President; and Lowell Jones, Secretary/Treasurer. Directors are: Sheryl Moore, Helga Lobb, Zelda McKenzie, Shawn Leonard, Marc Mathurin, Carley Parish, Nancy Mitchell and Peter Behr, who currently represents the Town on the Chamber Board. Perhaps by now some of you have noticed a new sign as you enter Hampton at the intersection of Main Street and William Bell Drive. No, its not an election sign although there are plenty of those to be sure. If you happened to look over top of them you would have seen The Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership logo has been added to the Welcome to Hampton sign. By the time this goes to print, the election will be over and the vote for signs should be coming down. But the tangible demonstration of the Towns bond with its partner community of Piggs Peak, Swaziland will remain. This recognition is a testament to how the Partnership has become ingrained into the unique culture of our town; and sharing the sign with Hamptons native son, John Peters Humphrey, is a particular honour. As we know, Mr Humphrey drafted the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The premise he expressed in the Declaration - that all human beings should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood - is a core principle of the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership something we know as buntfu or ubuntu. One of our original Starfish students was a young lady named Nontokozo Dlamini who many of you will remember from her visit to Hampton in the summer of 2008. In her very moving dinner speech in June of that year, Nontokozo made reference to a Hampton hero, John Humphrey, who stood for human rights. She identified the lack of human rights womens rights in her country as the leading cause of the record high incidence of HIV/AIDS in Swaziland. Men do whatever they want to women he doesnt use a condom when he doesnt want to he just does what he wants to do. Much of what the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership is doing in Piggs Peak is intended to advance greater equality between men and women. Our construction of the modern latrine to replace the womens pit toilet at Peak Central is a prime example. Like Nontokozo, we believe gender equality is a lynchpin to achieving universal human rights. We would like to think John Humphrey would be proud of what we are doing. We are certainly proud to share a sign with him. Bob Nolans most famous song, Tumbling Tumbleweeds, began as a poem about the leaves he saw being torn and whirled from the trees during a storm he was watching from his apartment window. In time the little poem was revised to give the version of Tumbling Tumbleweeds that is known to the public. The Sons of the Pioneers (first referred to by that name in the press of January 1934) had the theme song Theres a Blue Sky Way Up Yonder as the signature tune of their radio shows; later, Tumbling Tumbleweeds became their new theme song. The live studio audiences, as well as those who telephoned in their requests, frequently asked for Tumbling Weeds having misheard tumbling leaves. Bob Nolan eventually gave in and changed the name of the song and made a slight change in the melody and words. This is how he described the transition: The song itself, the melody, had different lyrics altogether and it was quite by accident that we thought of Tumbling Tumbleweeds. I didnt at the time. They kept requesting this Tumbling Weeds song and the song at the time was Tumbling Leaves. Id say about 7 out of 10 request for the song came in Tumbling Weeds so Harry Hall said, Why dont you change the lyrics and make it Tumbling Weeds? Tumbling Tumbleweeds. Just, eh, same melody except that it didnt have that tilted note in the latter part. When speaking of Tumbling Tumbleweeds historian Douglas B. Green states unequivocally, if western music has an anthem, this is it. This western anthem hit the charts of radio transcriptions in December 1934. For this transcription the group recorded 102 songs. In 1935 The Sons of the Pioneers and Decca Records signed a contract. It is signed by the then members of the singing group Vernon H Spencer, Hugh Farr, Len Slye and Bob Nolan. On a doublesided disc (one song on each side) they would receive a two cent royalty; on a one-sided disc containing one song the royalty was half that. When the sheet music was introduced for Tumbling Tumbleweeds is was given as Tumbling Tumble Weeds; later printing of the sheet music corrected the spelling error. 127

Six-year old Gabriel Arseneault, from Upperton, is the youngest child in the Maritimes to be diagnosed with Huntington Disease. This condition is very rare in a child and is usually found in adults or juveniles. Huntington Disease remains incurable. Its time to come together again and help someone in need! Oceans of Ink and the small business of Sussex are hosting their 4th annual fundraising event - Have a Heart on Saturday, June 2nd starting at 10:00am, and this year the funds are being raised to save the life of young Nathan Beaudoin. Nates family needs our help! So this year our fundraiser is for them! As before, we will be offering ribbon tattoos for $40, but this year we will also be offering small heart tattoos, especially for Nate, with 100% of the proceeds going to Nate and his family. Nathan, who has just turned one, has a rare and complex congenital heart condition called Right Atrial Isonmerism/ Heterotaxy. Nates only hope of survival is a complex heart surgery that is only offered in Boston. The estimated cost for the surgery is approximately $300,000, which does not include accommodations or travel expenses. But tattoos arent the only way well be raising funds. There will be food (walking tacos), live music, art, 50-50 draw, raffles, silent auction, and thats just at Oceans of Ink! There is a growing list of small business in Sussex that are also volunteering to participate in the day. Keep checking the event on facebook (Oceans of Ink Presents: Have a Heart!) for a list of business involved, activities and for more information! Our fundraisers in past years have been a huge success, and were all really looking forward to it this year! Thanks to the Sussex Literary Initiatives and Cultural Events (SLICE) organization, a workshop for middle and high school students is being offered on Saturday, June 2nd at the Lions Den at 58 Willow Court in Sussex. Local authors have offered their time and expertise at no cost to the students. The theme of nature is tying the workshops together, and several of them will actually be held outdoors. On Sunday, May 27th residents of Hampton are participating in the Purina Walk for Dog Guides to help provide Dog Guides to people with disabilities. The Hampton Walk is taking place at Hampton Town Square with registration opening at 12:00noon and the Walk starting at 1:00pm. Organized by local volunteers, the Purina Walk for Dog Guides is truly a grassroots event. It provides community members with a fun and meaningful way to positively impact the lives of those living with disabilities locally. The Hampton Walk is one of 250 Walks taking place across the country this spring. To date, more than 1,700 Canadians have received a Dog Guide at no cost because of the dedication of Walk organizers, donors, and participants. One hundred per cent of the funds raised from the event go directly towards the five Dog Guide training programs at Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides: Canine Vision, Hearing Ear, Special Skills, Seizure Response, and Autism Assistance. My name is Cheryl Hansen and I am a cancer survivor. I had Hodgkins Disease when I was 14 yrs old and Thyroid Cancer in 2009. It was that year that I decided to participate in the Relay for Life in Hampton by entering a team. My teams name is Running Late and so far we have raised a little over $12,500 for cancer research. My team consists of friends and family, all of whom have been touched by cancer. My two children, Keegan and Brayden, relay with me as well. Their reasoning is that since cancer is everywhere and has affected so many in our family, they want to better their odds of survival by raising money. The main reason I joined the Relay for Life event is because of the Luminary Ceremony. The luminaries are candles that are lit at dusk and remain lit all night. They line the track and each candle has the name of someone honoured as a survivor or remembered in memory of someone who lost their battle to this disease. I am humbled and grateful while I walk around the track and read the names. It gives me the chance to fondly remember those that I lost. Relay also gives me the chance to think about how lucky I am to be a survivor. I celebrate being a Cancer survivor with the many other survivors. After the 12 hours, I wont worry about how tired, sore, and (hopefully not wet!!) I am; or that I have to pack up my tent, chair and cooler before I can head home on June 10th. Instead Ill watch the sun come up, hug my children and go get a big breakfast before falling into bed to sleep the day away. We will find comfort in knowing we have made a difference because we decided to fight back. We recently sent out our very first e-newsletter. This is something we have talked about for some time and although the first issue was quite time consuming the response has been positive, with several of our customers even taking the time to email us to tell us so. It is our hope that our advertising customers will find it a useful resource full of all kinds of tips and information, much as we hope these community magazines provide our readers with a whole community of interesting and useful news and events. I sometimes think of just 12 years ago when Mike and I first began Ossekeag Publishing. We took on an office with just three computers, two for creating the publications and one which was hooked up the internet. Most of our editorial came in as hard copy and had to be typed. Ad copy was a hand drawn sketch or occasionally (from companies with a national presence) an ad mat that could be scanned. Very little came to us via email. My six year old grand-daughter is always fascinated by how little connection to the bigger world Nana and Grumpy had as kids. I was her age when our family got our first television, with all of one channel and a GREAT test pattern for large parts of the 24-hour day. Interestingly, though, yesterday we watched some of those same cartoons that I saw as a kid . . . thanks to YouTube. Tom & Jerry and Sylvester & Tweety were both big hits. She laughed . . . and then went back a bit to rewatch the funniest section again. Not only was that impossible when I saw them, I also watched them in black and white, a concept completely foreign to her. She is amazed that there was no Dora, no Treehouse and no Barbie. Progress has lots of good in it, but not all change is positive.
