FELLOWSHIP
Goal of the Fellowship
To oer a year's worth of reporting and writing experience
to an individual who has expressed a desire to launch
a career in journalism and has a record of academic
excellence. At the Calgary Herald, the fellow will hone
skills at a major metro daily. At Postmedia News there
will be opportunities to work on national political stories.
Both newsrooms will provide a welcoming, collaborative
experience in which to learn and be inspired.
Who is Eligible?
Michelle Lang held a Bachelor of Arts in English so this fellowship is
not limited to students who are studying journalism. The criteria for
selection are:
A commitment to journalism and a love of storytelling
through the written word
Academic excellence
Strong writing and communication skills
A desire to eect change through journalism
(either through public service, advocacy journalism or
commitment to a specifc social causej
An ability to work well with colleagues
A natural curiosity and desire to learn about people and
events, particularly those of international importance
Basic reporting skills
Participation in university or community activities
Bilingualism, in French or other languages,
is considered an asset but is not required
Previous daily newspaper experience is an asset but is not mandatory
Successful candidates must have a valid driver's licence

Michelle Langs journalism probed politicians, highlighted injustices, explored solutions to health care problems and told the stories
of ordinary Canadians in extraordinary circumstances. The Michelle Lang Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for a student
of any discipline to apply his or her passion for writing and interest in current events to a full year of reporting in two of Canadas
busiest newsrooms.
British Columbian Thandi Fletcher received
the Michelle Lang Fellowship in Journalism
in 2011 after being selected by Postmedia
senior editors. Fletcher joined the Calgary
Herald newsroom in March after six months
of reporting duty at Postmedia News. The
graduate of Carleton University's journalism
program has also worked at the Western
Wheel in Alberta and at the victoria Times
Colonist. Her special project on breast cancer
will be published by Postmedia papers this
fall. Fletcher is the second recipient of the
fellowship, following Laura Stone of Ottawa.
