Rev. Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd 1 Sam 3:1-20; 1 Cor 6:11-20; John 1:43-51 January 15, 2012 Epiphany 2 In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Brothers and Sisters, I have good news: God has called each one of us. Just like God calls Nathaniel, Philip, and Samuel in the Gospel and Old Testament readings this morning, God calls each one of us to participate in Gods story here on earth. By Gods grace, each one of us, in our own unique way, has responded to this callyour presence here today is a reflection of this response. But with this response to Gods call comes great responsibility. We make a promise to God and to one another. We promise to seek God out in our daily lives and to live faithfully in His grace. We become responsible to one another, and for one another, as a community of faith. We commit to caring for everything that God has given us as a community. This is no easy taskbut dont worry! You see, just as God calls us, God also joins us on our journey together. God helps us and guides us in fulfilling these responsibilities as people of faith. My focus this morning is on how we respond to Gods call and fulfill our responsibilitieswhat promises we make in accepting this graceand why we should be joyful about these responsibilities that we take on. My focus is on our responses, promises, and responsibilities, because they all connect with stewardshipand as you know, after church today, we will host a conversation about stewardship in relation to this congregation. Stewardship. Stewardship, in its most basic form, is the way in which we care for everything that God has entrusted to us. This definition may come as a surprise to you. If so, youre not alone. We, both as a congregation and as a larger historical church body, have not done a very good job of talking about the stewardship of Gods creation. We often define it only in terms of time, talents, and treasure. And on our really bad days, we define it only as money. Stewardship is so much more than simply giving money. Stewardship is about how we, as Christians, live out our responses to Gods love with care, gratitude, thoughtfulness, respect, joy, compassion, justice, and love, for God and our neighbors. Stewardship is so much more than simply giving money. The trouble is, the thing we need to talk about this morning, as a congregation, is money. After the service everyone is invited to join in a discussion about stewardship and our church finances. Our financial offerings, as you know, are one way in which we promise to care for one another, and everything that God has given us, as a community. To be quite frank, our financial situation is not good. We will get into many more details during the meeting after church, but to give you a sense of where we stand, heres

an example. In 2011 the church council anticipated receiving $20,000 pesos per month in congregational offerings, and budgeted accordingly. In 2011, we, as a congregation, consistently offered between $10-15,000 pesos per month. Over the course of 12 months, this adds up to a $60,000 peso shortage. And this is not a new situationits been happening for a few years now. We havent done a good job of talking about this openly, but clearly that needs to change. And so, today, we begin. On the one hand, our financial situation is not good. It doesnt look too promising. We are in a difficult place. On the other hand, I trust that you, as families and individuals, have been faithful in your giving. In doing so, however, we still havent covered our basic expensesso we are left with the question: What are we to do? Thankfully this question does not fall on one single person, but rather on all of us, as a community of faith. Together, through Gods grace, we will come up with answers. If this sounds like a huge task, well, it isstewardship is a fundamental part of our Christian life, both as individuals, and as a community of faith. It is a huge task, but lets not worry. Instead, let us take on this task with confidence, joy, patience, and love for God and for one another. Let us take up this responsibility with a Spirit of confidence and certainty, because we know God is with us. When God calls us and claims us as his own, he doesnt disappear. God joins us and walks with us alwaysespecially when we face challenges and take on important responsibilities, like growing in our stewardship of all that God has given usand thanks be to God for that. En el nombre del Creador, Redentor y Sustentador, Amn. Hermanos y hermanas, tengo buenas nuevas: Dios nos ha llamado a cada uno de nosotros. As como Dios llama a Natanael, Felipe y Samuel en el Evangelio y en las lecturas del Antiguo Testamento de esta maana, tambin nos llama a participar a cada uno de nosotros en la historia de Dios aqu en la tierra. Por la gracia de Dios, cada uno de nosotros ha respondido de forma nica a este llamadosu presencia aqu hoy es una reflexin a este llamado. Pero con la respuesta al llamado de Dios, viene una gran responsabilidad. Hacemos una promesa a Dios y no a otra persona. Prometemos buscar a Dios en nuestra vida diaria y vivir fielmente en su gracia. Llegamos a ser responsables de unos a otros y por unos a otros, como comunidad de fe. Estamos comprometidos a cuidar de todo lo que Dios nos ha dado como comunidad. Esta nos es una tarea sencillapero no se preocupen! Como pueden ver, as como Dios nos llama, Dios tambin nos une en nuestro viaje juntos. Dios nos ayuda y gua en el cumplimiento de estas responsabilidades como pueblo de fe. porqu debiramos estar alegres con las responsabilidades que tomamos. Mi enfoque es en nuestras respuestas, promesas y responsabilidades, pues todo esto se conecta con mayordomay como saben, hoy despus del culto, estaremos teniendo una conversacin sobre mayordoma en relacin con esta congregacin. Mayordoma. Mayordoma, de manera bsica, es la forma en la cual cuidamos de todo lo que Dios nos ha confiado. Esta definicin puede causar sorpresa. Si es as, no eres el nico. Nosotros, como congregacin y como cuerpo eclesial de gran historia, no hemos hecho un buen trabajo al hablar de la mayordoma de la creacin de Dios. Frecuentemente la definimos solo en trminos de tiempo, talentos y tesoros. Y en nuestros das muy malos , la definimos solo en trminos de dinero. Mayordoma es mucho ms que simplemente dar dinero. Mayordoma es sobre cmo nosotros, como cristianos, vivimos nuestra respuesta al amor de Dios, con esmero, gratitud, atencin, respeto, alegra, compasin, justicia y amor, para Dios y para nuestros vecinos. Mayordoma es mucho ms que simplemente dar dinero. El problema es, que del asunto que necesitamos hablar esta maana, como congregacin, es el dinero. Despus del servicio todos estn invitados a unirse en la discusin sobre mayordoma y las finanzas de nuestra iglesia. Nuestras ofrendas financieras, como saben, son una forma en la que prometemos cuidar unos de otros, y de todo lo que Dios nos ha dado como comunidad. Para ser franco, nuestra situacin financiera no es buena. Tendremos ms detalles de esto, despus del culto, pero para darnos una idea de dnde estamos parados, aqu hay un ejemplo. En el 2011 el consejo de la iglesia contempl recibir $20,000.00 pesos al mes en la ofrenda congregacional y la congregacin acord presupuestarlo. En el 2011, como congregacin se ofrend entre $10,000.00 y 15,000.00 mensuales. En el curso de 12 meses, esto suma $60,000.00 de dficit Y esta situacin no es nuevaesto ha sucedido en los ltimos aos. No hemos hecho un buen trabajo hablando de esto abiertamente, pero evidentemente esto necesita cambiar. Y por eso, hoy vamos a iniciar este cambio. Por un lado, nuestra situacin financiera no es buena. No se ve prometedora. Estamos en una posicin difcil. Por otro lado, yo confo que ustedes, como familias y en lo individual, han sido fieles en dar. Con esto, sin embargo, no hemos cubierto nuestros gastos bsicosas nos quedamos con una pregunta: Qu vamos a hacer? Afortunadamente esta pregunta no recae en una sola persona, sino en todos nosotros, como comunidad de fe. Juntos, mediante la gracia de Dios, saldremos con respuestas. Si esto suena como una tarea enorme, bueno, s lo esla mayordoma es una parte fundamental de nuestra vida cristiana, tanto individualmente, como comunidad de fe. Esta es una enorme tarea, pero no se preocupen. En cambio, tomemos esta tarea con confianza, alegra, paciencia y amor a Dios y a unos a otros.

Tomemos esta responsabilidad con un espritu de confianza y certeza, pues sabemos que Dios est con nosotros. Cuando Dios nos llama y nos declara para s mismo, l no desaparece. Dios nos une y camina con nosotros siempre especialmente cuando enfrentamos cambios y tomamos responsabilidades importantes, como el crecer en nuestra mayordoma de todo lo que Dios nos ha dado y gracias sean dadas a Dios por eso.
