Presidents Message
CAR Director Jeanne T. Nelson with NGC President Shirley Nicolai, and NCAGC President Vickie Godwin. This beautiful design was created by Jeanne T. Nelson. Jeanne traveled to Virginia from NY State to present Springtime! A Special Floral Event! Jeanne demonstrated a variety of floral designs using an interesting selection of containers and flowers.

June will be busy with the Presidents coffees for each District and Garden Clubs holding their last meeting or possibility a luncheon somewhere before most of us take a summer break. Sweet Summer. We can dig, plant and enjoy all the wondrous things Mother Nature provides for us. We will again send information to everyone via our website under the title of Presidents Package. Click on the mailbox and read all pertinent information for all of us. Please assist others to these resources if they are not familiar with how to use this website. The Capital Gardener will be delivered via the electronic method from now on. If there is someone who needs assistance in locating the Capital Gardener or perhaps doesnt have a computer, please be a BUDDY and print it for them. We are in the future, folks. We can conserve paper, save trees and time, and once you get the hang of it you will be happy for less clutter and more efficiency! There is still a small amount of time to sign up for the France Riverboat trip. My husband and I have made plans to go early and go to Normandy, France as well as the Claude Monet Garden and House. This is a train ride, about 1 hour, outside of Paris where the trip begins. You will need to add the extension onto the trip to have some time. Extensions are available at both ends of the two week trip. The date is mid July to the end of the month, plus a bit more for extensions. Things are blooming all summer at the US National Arboretum so please enjoy a visit there and dont forget to stop by the newly refreshed Arbor House Gift Shop. There are many new bright, pretty and great items available. HAPPY SUMMER one and all. Vickie Godwin, President NCAGC, Inc.

The National Capital Area Garden Clubs was represented at the National Garden Club Convention by Vickie and her friends. Poss Tarpley, Dale DeFeo, Estelle Woodcock, Ellen Spencer, Vickie Godwin, Anne Bucher, Libby Coffey Jo Sellers, Babs McClendon, MEllen Alden, and Jeannette Vaughn.

2013 CENTRAL ATLANTIC REGION CONFERENCE Bette Lewis, Chairperson The venue has been selected for the 2013 Central Atlantic Region Conference, which NCAGC, Inc. is hosting. The North Bethesda Marriott at Pooks Hill will be the site. The hotel, which has recently been renovated is elegant, convenient to transportation and well within our budget. Rooms will be charged at $114 per night, single or double occupancy, and will include free Internet service. There is transportation to and from both Metro stations every thirty minutes and parking is free. C.A.R. will be sponsoring a Symposium immediately following the Conference and the room rate for this event will remain at the $114 level, although as most of you know, room rates in the Metropolitan area are higher during the work week than on week ends. We are looking forward to having all of you in attendance at the Central Atlantic Region in 2013. As the Committee continues to meet, I will keep you posted on our progress. We have been receiving suggestions for program speakers from clubs and we appreciate your input.

MEMBERSHIP David Healy, 1st Vice President It is a rare gardener that creates a perennial border and maintains it unchanged for decades. Most of us are willing to give up on something that just has not been working out and to try something new or to make way for new varieties and other introductions into the market place. We should consider treating our clubs like we treat our gardens. Most of our clubs operate on a September to June schedule leaving the summer for gardening and travel. While the club year is winding down, the club leadership is busy planning for next year. The easy way is to do what we have always done. But the better way is to take a good look at ourselves and see how we might make improvements. Are we trying to do things for which we have lost enthusiasm? Are we moving with the times? Do we need new members with new ideas and new energy? Now is the time to garden our clubs. David Healy NCAGC NOMINATING COMMITTEE Joan Boudreau, Chairperson A Nominating Committee has been formed consisting of three former NCAGC Presidents who serve as non-voting advisors: Libby Coffey, Ellen Spencer and Mary Ellen Alden. Also, two members from each District were appointed by the District Director: District I: Connie Dalpra and Arleen Ankeney District III: Sandi Piccirillo and Chris Getek District II: Jane Goodman and Babs McClendon District IV: Dianne Gregg and Virginia Render At the March 5 meeting, Personnel Forms were distributed to members who will, in turn, ask possible interested nominees to complete and return before the next meeting on August 27. We have nominees for all positions except 2nd Vice President (who presently serves as the Awards Chairman), and for the Recording Secretary. Please think of potential leaders that you would like to suggest. We've had a tradition of strong and creative people in charge - how about you? Any member of NCAGC may submit a recommendation to the Nominating Committee. Being recommended to the Committee is no guarantee that the member will receive the nomination for office. Potentially, we could have more than one nominee for all the offices, but remember that permission, in the form of the completed Personnel Form, must be obtained. Copies are available from any member of the committee. Please contact me if you have any concerns, questions or comments. Joan M. Boudreau Nominating Committee Chairman, 2011 - 2013

COUNTRY - COMMUNITY - CHILDREN GARDENING IN THE PAST, PRESENT & THE FUTURE I am pleased to announce a new NCAGC Flower Show Award. It is the Harlin G. turner Award for the Most Innovative Design and is a rosette of fuchsia ribbons. The intent of this section award is to recognize a design exhibit which incorporates imaginative manipulation of components. It may be offered and awarded to the most innovative exhibit scoring 85 points or above the Design Division, provided all other General and Design Award Requirements are met. An exhibit may have been awarded another Top Exhibitor award and still be eligible for this award. Exhibits in both Standard and Small Standard Flower Shows and in both Creative and Traditional styles are eligible. Only one award may be offered per show. The rosette has been ordered from NGC Headquarters and will be available after May 1, 2012. Contact me if you need one . Hopefully, this award will be included in future flower shows. How wonderful to be the person to win the first Harlin G. Turner Award ribbon. The 2011 Awards that were won and presented at our general meeting on March 29, 2012 are listed in this issue of the Capital Gardener and on our NCAGC website. As I reminded members attending that meeting, garden clubs need to be deciding on candidates for the Perennial Bloom Award. The deadline for entries is September 1, 2012 so decisions should be made before your garden club shuts down for the summer. The form and information about the Perennial Bloom Award is also on our Website. This summer with the help of Springfield Acres Garden Club I will be offering a GENERATIONS GROWING TOGETHER summer flower program. We will be working with students from the 4th grade attending Crestwood Elementary School on this pilot project. Plants will be given to the children and we will meet twice a month to mentor the students and present gardening related programs. Then in the fall when school starts there will be a flower show at the school allowing the participating students to display their successes. Watch for photos in the fall Capital Gardener. Renee joined RSGC in 2003 and became very involved in garden therapy, as well as chairing several committees before becoming president in 2007. In spite of a difficult bout with breast cancer, Renee continued her presidency for two full years, became a dynamic force in RSGC's Garden of the Year program and floral designer for their Holiday Design Event. CLUB NEWS, Rock Spring Garden Club Rock Spring Garden Club Receives Arlington County Annual Award The members of Rock Spring Garden Club of Arlington, VA, were surprised and pleased this spring to receive the group award for the 2011 Bill Thomas Outstanding Park Service Volunteer Award from the Arlington County Park and Recreation Commission. This annual award "honors and encourages those residents who also demonstrate a passionate dedication and support for our dynamic programs, natural resources and public open spaces," says Dinesh Tiwari, director of Arlington County Parks and Recreation Department, in announcing the award to RSGC. This award was established in tribute to lifelong parks volunteer Bill Thomas. Rock Spring Garden Club members Sheila Moore, center, and The award was presented to Rock Spring Garden Dianne Simmons, far right, co-chair of the Civic Development Club at its April 19th meeting, and the club was Committee, with Marymount University students doing spring honored at a reception following the meeting of the cleaning in Rock Spring Park. Arlington County Board on April 24th. The 59-year old Rock Spring Garden Club has a long history of volunteerism in Arlington County starting in 1953 with an effort to save three stately oak trees near Rock Spring in north Arlington. The club continued to beautify the Rock Spring area and dreamed of creating a park there. Through the dedicated work of RSGC member Florence Taylor, that "dream became reality" in 1970 when the Arlington County Board approved the establishment of Rock Spring Park at the continuation of George Mason Drive. Since then the club has planted many perennials, shrubs and trees, including a dawn redwood and a Japanese maple donated by member Kathy Diggs, and thousands of spring bulbs in the Rock Spring Park. In 1994, a tot trail, proposed by member Emily DeCicco, was established for the pleasure of walking through the woods that are also part of this park. Each year RSGC members work with students from nearby Marymount University and Arlington Public Schools on educational projects and clean-up efforts in Rock Spring Park. Two years ago the Club's Civic Development Committee decided to focus on planting only native plants in the park. "This award recognizes the legacy of dedication of our past and present garden club members for service to our community, says Thea McGinnis, RSGC President. On their behalf, I thank Arlington County for this recognition. We are both humbled and proud to receive this prestigious award." Rock Spring Garden Club is dedicated to gardening through beautification and horticultural education. The programs and activities developed over the years reflect the special interests and diversity of its membership and the clubs strong desire be civically active in Arlington county. CLUB NEWS, Laurel Garden Club Laurel Garden Club's annual March workshop with senior residents at Burke Lake Gardens increases in popularity every year--19 residents attentively watched quick floral design demos by club members. Coffee mugs filled with floral foam soon sprouted handsome arrangements by proud participants. It is rewarding for club members to see design skills growing each year! A week later LGC members helped residents at Leewood Convalescent Center make their own floral arrangements, too. The Club's annual luncheon on June 9 will be preceded by tours of several member gardens. Then member Esther Pincus will host the club in her lovely wooded gardens and sunroom. Page 10

CLUB NEWS, Garden Club of Montclair The Garden Club of Montclair began their 37 th Season in March touring the Marine Corps Museum. On March 27 the Club honored past members and friends Barbara Niemi, Jackie Fitzpatrick, Marlene Rule and Sharon Colcombe with the planting of Red Knockout Roses in the Montclair Blue Star Memorial Garden at the MPOA Building. A special Rose was installed as a tribute to the Clubs longest serving Perennial Bloom recipient, Barbara Shutt. Kudos to Barbara Shutt, one of our founding Garden Club members. Come Join Us ! Its therapeutic. People who work with paper and computers need to spend quality time with living, breathing beings, like family, friends, pets and YES -- plants! The nursery business is very successful because we like to get our hands dirty, feel and smell the earth and living plants, and introduce new colors, textures and varieties of plants into our world. You are qualified. You dont have to be an avid Gardener or a certified Horticulturist to enjoy Gardening. All you need is a desire to learn, energy and time. Its fun. Join individuals with varying degrees of expertise (or lack thereof) in gardening. We learn, share, exchange and add new perennials to our gardens, and thrill each year when new specimens magically appear in our gardens. Dues are only $20 per year. CLUB NEWS, Centennial Garden Club Prince William County Fair August 10-18, 2012 Fun4U The 63rd annual Prince William County Fair held in Manassas in August promises fun for all. It is privately owned and is the largest county fair in the state of Virginia. The events include livestock exhibits, home arts exhibits, tractor pulls, a rodeo, demolition derbies, baby contest, live music and a large variety of midway rides and games. There is also a building with baby animals. The fair expects 90,000 to 100,000 people to attend each year. It is the only fair that holds two Standard Flower Shows every year and is sponsored by Centennial Garden Club. This year the first show opens on August 10th and the second show on August 14 th. Centennial offers judges for the two childrens flower shows as well as planning the adult shows. Two sets of three NCAGC, Inc. Accredited Judges, judge each of the adult shows. Ribbons are awarded if merited by the judges in each class. Each section is awarded a Best in Show award. In addition to the huge number of horticulture in the schedule, the design section includes a class for the novice designer. A novice is one who has never won a blue ribbon in a standard flower show. You need not live in Prince William County to enter. Youth groups are invited to enter a small garden outside each of the livestock buildings and will be judged as well. The schedule is online and the rules can be found there as well. Bring your children and grandchildren and enjoy the fair. Plan to have a meal or snack at the numerous food vendors. All your favorite fair food will be there for your enjoyment. See you at the fair. Evalee Ciuca Centennial Garden Club Flower Show Committee

CLUB NEWS, New Mark Commons Garden Club On Saturday morning, March 31, five intrepid members of the New Mark Commons Garden Club (ranging in age up to age 97!) arrived at the landscaped area between the County Council Office Building and its parking garage in downtown Rockville. Our aim was to remove English ivy choking a half-dozen trees around a pond. During our clipping, trimming, and pruning, we discovered that the English ivy was also smothering several azaleas and digging into the bricks on some ornamental walls. Our two hours of work took care of these items. We had to leave behind a lot more shrubbery that could still use pruning, but at least we made a definitive dent in helping the county take care of this neglected area. CLUB NEWS, Garden Club of Waynewood Garden Club of Waynewood Celebrates Fifty Years of Service
The image of garden club ladies sipping tea and wearing hats to meetings is long gone. The Garden Club of Waynewood, which is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year, is an example of the new direction of garden clubs today. Our members do so much to help the Waynewood community, says Marjie Morris, president. But we are also involved in broader regional and national issues. She pointed out club members involvement in the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture at Woodlawn Plantation. Members are helping with the vegetable garden which supplies food to DC area food banks. As part of the clubs fiftieth anniversary activities, a special $500 donation is being made to Arcadia. During the month of May, the Garden Club of Waynewood held a flower show called Bountiful which showcased spring flower arrangements and horticulture from members gardens. One category of designs featured a flower arrangement on a table setting, complete with tablecloths and dishes and glassware. Many of our members are skilled floral designers and this is a chance for the public to gain ideas that they can put to use in their own homes, said Morris. Also during May, a photography exhibit was on display at the Martha Washington Library at 6614 Ft. Hunt Road. The garden club members photos exhibit the members flowers as well as their activities such as their annual plant sale for the community. Throughout the Garden Club of Waynewoods 50 years, the club has contributed scholarship money to deserving local high school students. Each year club members maintain flower plantings at the three Waynewood neighborhood signs and decorate them for the holidays. Another annual event is the plant sale at Waynewoods Fourth of July celebration. The Garden Club of Waynewood established a Youth Garden Club at Ft. Hunt Elementary School, made financial contributions to the National Arboretums Washington Youth Gardens, and for ten years maintained flower beds at the Collingwood Library and Museum of Americanism. Other contributions support garden projects in the Alexandria area. The Garden Club of Waynewood belongs to the National Capital Area Garden Clubs, which is a member of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. Contributions from the Garden Club of Waynewood have gone to a forest education partnership with NCAGC and the USDA Forest Service to provide reforestation in national and urban forests. As an important part of the clubs mission, education programs are held at the meetings including such topics and environmental issues, landscaping, and caring for plants and flowers. Currently the Garden Club of Waynewood has 30 members. Meetings are held the third Thursday of the month, September to June, at 10:30 am in the Fellowship Hall of Plymouth Haven Baptist Church. Guests are always welcome and new members do not have to be accomplished gardeners, said Morris. One of the benefits of our club is how freely members share their expertise and help each other.

The event took place at the Garden Club of Waynewood's May flower show and was part of the club's 50th anniversary activities and their ongoing commitment and service to the community.

JUDGES COUNCIL Muriel Turner, Chairman At the Judges Councils General meeting in March a program was given by several of our members on how gourds could be used in Design. A most inspiring program held in conjunction with Estelle Woodcock distributing complimentary copies of the Gourd Book From Vine to Design which had been the inspiration behind the program. At this meeting a motion was proposed, voted on and approved for the distribution of funds to secure the Bethesda Marriot Hotel for the October 2013 Symposium, which will be held in conjunction with the CAR Conference. Morning of Design was presented at the Vienna Presbyterian Church on March 8, both MEllen Alden and Rilla Crane presented a terrific program which inspired us all. Thanks to Lisa Adelman and Sandi Piccirillo for organizing this wonderful morning. Flower show School is over and was, as always, a huge success thanks to the efforts of Sandi Piccirillo and her team. Many thanks to you all. The Fall Flower show will be held at the Arboretum on October 17, 2012. The Schedule is being finalized and will be given out at our annual Picnic As you are all aware many hands are needed to put on a Flower show. I know that you will all be willing to come forward and do your part in making this a great show. Our Picnic is to be held in conjunction with Floralia on June 20 at the Home of Evalee Ciuca who has once again generously offer her home and garden for this event. Come and enjoy A Farewell Tea for Rilla Crane was held on March 22 at the Old Brogue in Great Falls. Twenty-seven people attended this event to wish Rilla well in her new home in California. She will be missed. GARDENING CONSULTANTS COUNCIL Tom Lewis, Chairman The GCC meeting this spring with Don Hyatt at the National Arboretum brought home the importance of the arboretums azalea collection. This unique asset richly deserves the support that the NCAGC community is offering to provide an endowment for its future. Driving by, or better yet walking through, the collection each year is spectacular. The joint GCC/ECC annual picnic and plant sale will be at Mary Corleys home in Rockville at a date to be determined. We get to admire the work of a proficient and experienced gardener and interact with fellow council members. I always learn from the auction about unfamiliar plants that will thrive in our zone. The GCC is eager to encourage all gardeners to attend the Gardening Study course on September 6 and 7 at the National Arboretum. Remember that you can bring participants, including spouses, who have not yet seen the benefit of garden club membership. ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTANTS COUNCIL Jo Sellers, Chairman The dates of future meetings are: September 4, 2012 - November 6, 2012 - February 5, 2013 - June 4, 2013 I'm sure our Vice President, Mary Corley, will have some exciting educational programs planned. Watch for information about them in our newsletter. Karen O'Meara has offered to serve as the Accreditation Person. She is the person members need to contact to see if they need to refresh at the next Environmental School which will be held this fall. Environmental Websites Do you wish you could contact those responsible for environmental matters today? It is at the American Cancer Societys Hope Lodge in Manhattan. The use of natural elements - biophilac design - is a growing trend in healthcare. It is called Evidence-Based Biophilic Design, which maximizes human health and function. It further beautifies the area and creates a more peaceful communal space. The living green wall at Hope Lodge was sponsored by the Plant Connection, Riverhead, New York, and PNC Bank. Plant Connection, is a Long Island grower and distributor G-O2 Living Walls. They designed and installed the 10 X10 green wall with automatic irrigation.

Not an afterthought, but special mention of Lorraine Leonard for not only supplying great volunteers but for jumping in with her mother, Dorothy Yashinski, at the last minute to unpack, check in, price and set out merchandise that otherwise would have remained in the box during peak sale times. Her never ending supply of moral support is priceless. And then there is Casey and Dave Kneipp who never seem to run out of energy or enthusiasm for getting the job done. They make a great team and we are lucky to have them. We need to celebrate our red, white and true blue teams! Many many thanks to all. Mary Beth Cecil, Manager Thanks to Arbor House Volunteers!
