Q. How would you develop a dry dock aspect? (Or) How would you prepare dry dock specification?

Purpose of dry docking is to inspect and carry out repair as necessary for those underwater parts which are otherwise inaccessible during afloat condition. Dry docking is also mandatory interns of classification society requirements. Scope of dry docking

Every 2.5 yrs periods and maximum interval not exceeding 3 yrs between two dry dockings. One of the docking has to coincide with special survey which is conducted once in 5 years.

Extent of survey items to be examined are1. Under water hull 2. Rudder (linkage, hydraulic test, damage), pintle 3. Propeller rope guard, set cutter 4. Seals for stern tube glands 5. Sea chest gritting 6. Overboard valves 7. Sea suction valves 8. Air /steam pipe 9. Anchor & chain cable

Repair specification which are prepared by ship officers so that dockyard can quote time/price per work should be divided under-

1. General services Shore daily basis power Noon hour cost for skilled and unskilled labour

Removal of garbage Connecting SW and FW supply, sewage

2. Under water repair No. of sea chest and O/B valves and their size and location. No. of anodes to be replaced and their position from drawings. Jobs to be carried out at tail shaft and rudder Propeller to be specified by nature of work and their drawings to be faxed to dry dock.

3. Hull cleaning and painting -

Report of last dry dock regarding cleaning and painting to be checked and calculate area. Cost of painting is normally on micron thickness and they are of m2 basis. Calculated area to be forwarded to dockyard along with requirements of cleaning and painting procedure.

4. Mechanical repairs

All mechanical repair jobs to be carried by dockyard should be categorized with complete details of particulars such as a. Name of jobs b. Manufacture details c. Spares required d. Drawings to be provided

5. Pipe lines repair

Length, size, materials and no. of pipes to be repaired. Drawing of renewal pipe should be send to dock yard. If any valve to be replaced then size and type of valve to be mentioned.

6. Steel renewal

Length, breadth, thickness and material of the plates to be mentioned and position of damage area to be mentioned such as deck hull or E/R.

7. Deck/navigational/electrical equipments

To carry out repair of above mentioned jobs should be categorised by o Name of the part o Manufactures details o Description of job o If heavy, then weight to be mentioned.

8. Others

Others jobs which require to carry out survey and need assistance of shipyard should be mentioned separately. In addition, as preliminary preparation prior to dry dock to be carried outo Report of last dry dock to be checked. o Inventory of spares for machinery to be overhaul. o Tools (spanners for propeller nut, poker gauge, shaft coupling bolts) to be kept ready. o Inventory of bends, flanges, valves etc are to be taken. If require raise requisition for spares and stores.

Continuous survey of machinery items should be identifying for dry dock.

o Identification of defects and preparation of defect list to be made in conjunction will all engineers and officers.
o

Requirement of any specialised service and equipment such as auto meter and control equipment has to be sent to office.

o Jobs to be done by ships staff and dock yard to be made in conjunction with superintendent o Jobs timing schedule to be prepared to ensure satisfactory completion of all jobs within dry dock period.

Maintain safety

Readiness of safety equipment and wearing of safety gears to be ensured during carious stages of docking. Arrange and attend in daily safety meeting Arrange fire patrol Ensure prevention of flooding of double bottom tank and E/R while undocking.

Dry dock specification

1. Spare parts to be checked, if necessary send requisition. So spare parts will be available

during dry dock period. 2. Special tools to be checked and kept stand by for use.

3. Take bunker in such a way that dry dock time there will minimum amount of LO and FO. 4. Check last dry dock report for any recommendation 5. Check last dry dock report for stern tube wear down, pintle clearances. 6. Drawing and instruction manual prepared for reference such as i. ii. iii. General arrangement plan Capacity plan Shell expansion plan (which include frame and plate no. and position, plate thickness, special plate thickness are position.)

7. Keep some empty tank for transfer oil during cleaning other tanks. 8. Give early notice to shore staff for large and unusual jobs. 9. Make a dry dock repair list based on previous fly/sheets and record defects and send it to office. 10. Make a survey list required by the classification society and send it to office.

Prior to dry dock

1. All valves and repair jobs should be tagged and numbered according to repair list. 2. Take crank shaft deflection. 3. Take sounding of all tanks and record it.
4. All extinguishers and detector should be in operational condition. 5. CO2 room should be locked.

6. Shore electrical supply and cooling water supply connection checked and kept standby. 7. Impressed current system power off and fuse taken off 8. Clean tank top and bilge transfer to shore. 9. Emergency escape marked and cleared 10. Necessary tank to be gas freed 11. All loose items lashed up

12. All spanners and tools must be collected and locked.

At arrival dry dock

1. Shut down auxiliary boiler 2. Press up air bottle 3. Air condition and fridge shut down 4. When water comes down, stop main generator. Inspection ,immediate after dry up the dock made by C/E.

1. Stern tube seal area for leaking/damage. 2. Rope guard 3. Propeller and blade 4. Rudder 5. Sea chest gratings 6. Zinc anode condition 7. Shell bottom plate deformation 8. Bilge keel 9. Tank bottom plugs ( sign of leakage) 10. Bow thrusters and blade 11. Echo sounder and speed log transducer.

Safety in dry dock

1. Attend daily safety meeting.

2. Remove oily rags from ship in daily basis. 3. Fire detector and extinguishers are ready. 4. CO2 room locked. 5. All escape route marked, cleaned and lighted. 6. No turning of M/E No turning of rudder No oil and ballast transfer No blow down of boiler No pump out of bilges. 7. Fire patrol in accommodation and E/R. 8. All phone number of essential services should be displayed in convenient place. 9. Before entry to enclosed space, follow enclosed space entry check list. 10. Protective gear worn during working.

Prior to undock, following inspection to be carried out.

1. Propeller rup guand in position and painted.

2. Rudder bottom plug fitted, pintle inspection cover fitted and securing bolt heads

secured by wire. Rudder stock flange bolts and nuts fully connected. 3. After stern tube seal space filled with oil, tap plug for wear down measurement is fitted back. 4. All zinc anodes are fitted and clean of marking tape/paint 5. All sea suction grids are fitted back and well secured. 6. All tanks plugs are fitted back. 7. Echo sounder, speed log transducer not covered by paint 8. All ship side valve are fitted back 9. Check paint and repair work completed 10. Check rudder freeness.

After flooding

1. Check all sea valves, pipes for leakage. 2. Check stern tube, ships side for leakage. 3. Check all tank sounding. If any leakage, lowered water and rectify. 4. Do not open high sea suction 5. All sea water pumps to be vented. 6. Start main generator, if every thing ok. 7. Resume power.

Check at repair berth

1. Inspection should be done on the repair items as well as adjacent areas for sign of damage causal by dry dock workers/ poor workmanship. 2. Special attention should be given on tank plate renewal, their welding defects. 3. Before closing the tank manholes, it is necessary to inspect inside the tank, to ensure the cleanliness and pipes are fitted correctly. 4. Tank to press up and manhole to be checked for leakage.
