Scrap Dealers at Banepa Valley

1. Introduction to Banepa Municipality

Banepa Municipality was established in 2038 B.S (1981 A.D). It is located in Kavre District, 26 km east of Kathmandu valley. The municipality covers an area of 6.5 sq km which is divided into 11 wards. The current population is estimated to be 21,000. The population was 15,822 according to the 2001 census. The no. of households in Banepa is estimated to be 385. The population growth rate of Banepa is 2.98% per annum. Every year 300 to 400 new houses are built in Banepa. Thus there is a growing market for the informal sectors in scrap dealing.

2. Introduction to Recyclable Waste

Recycling of the solid waste is based upon the 3R principle. 3R principle comprises of the Reduce, Recycle and the Reuse of the solid waste. Reduce part of the solid waste is enforced by the formal actor of the 3R principle. Formal secor consist of government, NGOS, legislation etc. Recyle and reuse of the waste is done by the informal actor of the 3R principle. Informal sector comprises of the scrap dealer, scavenger, and middlemen, recycle company, etc. In south-asia it is estimated that 20% of the generated waste is recycled.

3. Recyclable waste in Banepa Municipality

Banepa Municiapality being the heart of the district dominates the recycle waste market of the district. Waste forms all over the district are brought to the Banepa. Due to the large competion amoung the seven scrap dealers, attractive price are offered by these competitors. Also these dealers have huge potential in buying waste even in large amount. So scrap dealing of banepa doesnt reflect only on the recyclabe waste of the Banepa. Waste are brought and sold from Dhulikhel, Panauti, Kwopashi and sometime even Kathmandu. The waste collected is finally sold to the recycling industry. There are various ways of the waste collection. The household minor waste is collected by the scavengers. On supply the waste are bought from the seller as well. Old and useless vehicles are also bought by the scrap dealers. Big vehicle are often paid 2 lakh to 3 lakh rupees. Small vehicle like car, jeep are often paid uto 50,000 rupees. Waste like beer bottels are also sold by the hotels and resturant in large amount. The inorganic waste from dumping site are also collected by the scavengers and brought to the scrap dealers. 4. Scrap Dealer
Scrap dealer refers to the people who buy the used waste of the people and then sell it to the recycling industry. There are seven scrap dealers in the Banepa at present: I. II. III. IV. V. VI. VII. 5. Composition of Recyclable Waste

Composition varied according to the scrap dealers. Different recyclable waste with the estimated quantity according to the owners is as follow. Beer bottles and aluminium can is sold in per piece. Weight of the bottle is asumed to be 225 gram on average and for the aluminium can, the weight is assumed to be 35 gram per can. Waste Composition of Scrap Dealer

Thus the Iron was found out to be the largest part of the waste composition being the the easily available product with high selling value. 30.5 tons of the iron is collected and sold and it occupies 76% of the scraps. Bottels occupy 7%, papers 7%, aluminium can 1% and plastic and utensils 9% of the scrap.

6. Conclusion
The recyling part of the 3R philosophy is being followed in the Banepa. Recycling of the inorganic waste is well practiced in the Banepa Municiplity. It has also employed a lot of people and provided raw material to many other recycling industry. It has directly and indirectly employed a lot of people. Thus the scenario of scrap dealing in Banepa Municipality shows the prospect of the recyling in Nepal. In the country like Nepal such clean industry can serve in the sustainable development of the nation.
