Firefighters announce new

Possible
changes
to posting
agendas
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Haddonfield Sun
After hearing several mem-
bers of the public mention
that they had no idea a meet-
ing had been scheduled to dis-
cuss the approval of funding
for an artificial turf field at the
high school, Haddonfield Com-
missioner Jeff Kasko agreed
that the process needed to be
possibly revamped to provide
more time for borough citizens
to see whats happening in up-
coming meetings.
Three members of the audi-
ence complained at a recent
rescheduled borough meeting
that they had no idea that the
borough was discussing the
possibility of spending more
than $350,000 for an artificial
turf field at a meeting on May
22. Pro-turf supporters domi-
nated the meeting, but as
Mayor Tish Colombi did point
out, a number of anti-turf citi-
zens did speak up at the meet-
ing.
Haddonfield residents Mary
Fagan and Sherry Gallagher
both argued that it was diffi-
cult to obtain information
about upcoming Haddonfield
meetings and that the agendas
for commissioner meetings
are either posted late on the
day of the meeting or in some
cases not at all. Gallagher said
Reflecting
on the
Haddonfield
alligator
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Haddonfield Sun
A three-foot long alligator
was seen in the Cooper River
near Oaklyn about two weeks
ago. Definitely a strange sight.
But for residents who have
lived in the borough for the
past five years, it might jog a
few memories of an action-
packed month in Haddonfield
in 2007.
Maybe, just maybe, Mayor
Tish Colombi, said the caiman
that was caught recently could
be the progeny of the alliga-
tor that was spotted in Hop-
kins Pond five years ago.
It could have floated out
through the pipes into the
Cooper River, Colombi joked.
Its been five years since an
odd wildlife story caught the
attention of the borough. On
May 11, 2007, a passerby walk-
ing along Hopkins Pond saw
the hard-to-believe scene of a
three- to four-foot alligator
thrashing about in the water
at 9:50 a.m.
The citizen quickly called
the police and the department
notified the Camden County
Department of Parks.
Sgt. William Draham, of the
Camden County Park Police
Department, responded to the
caller. He quickly drove to the
park and found the reptile
feasting on a goose in the
pond, according to The Suns
Penn State University Athletic Department
John Walter, a Penn State University junior and graduate of Haddonfield Memorial High School, was
drafted earlier this month by the Kansas City Royals in the 29th round of the Major League Baseball
draft. He will pitch in a low Royals Single A league for the remainder of the year.
Headed to the big leagues
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Haddonfield Sun
John Walter, a 2009 graduate of
Haddonfield Memorial High
School, is going to the big leagues.
Well, hes actually flying into
Burlington, N.C., right now, but
hes taking the first step on a long
road to Major League Baseball.
Walter, a powerful right-hand-
ed pitcher for Penn State Univer-
sity, has decided to forgo his sen-
ior year at the university after
being drafted in the 29th round of
the MLB draft by the Kansas City
Royals.
It was crazy. I was in the
Northwoods League in Minneso-
ta, playing for the Mankato Moon-
dogs. I was going to one of my
games and right after it was over I
saw I had a message from a scout.
I called the scout from the Royals
and he said that he got me, Wal-
ter said from an airport in North
Carolina. I had to drive from
Minnesota to Chicago with my
dad, and then we drove from
Chicago to New Jersey. The scout
came to my house, and I signed
with the Royals. Ive been all over
these past few weeks; its nuts.
The six-foot, five-inch, 205-
pound power pitcher was picked
number 883 overall, on the third
day of the draft, June 6. Walter
went 2-8 with a low 4.00 ERA in
2012, but picked up about 85
strikeouts in 80 innings of work,
averaging more than a K an in-
ning.
He said that teams were calling
him before the draft and he was
anticipating being picked any-
time from the eighth round on.
The Atlanta Braves, the Cincin-
nati Reds, the Minnesota Twins,
the Miami Marlins, and the Seat-
tle Mariners all showed interest-
ed in Walter, but ultimately the
Royals pulled the trigger.

she didnt see the agenda posted
for the turf meeting at all on the
day of the meeting. Kasko said it
was posted at 5 p.m. that night,
certainly not enough time to dis-
seminate the information to the
public at large.
It was not publicized ade-
quately by the borough, youre ab-
solutely correct, Kasko said.
The borough failed to adequate-
ly prepare the public about this
issue. We failed and its some-
thing that needs to be discussed.
A week after the meeting,
Kasko said that he will likely pro-
pose a change to when the work-
shop and commissioner meeting
agendas are posted to the bor-
ough website.
I will suggest we publicize our
agenda and everything on that
agenda at least three days in ad-
vance of a meeting. That will in-
clude the agenda for our work ses-
sion meetings, the commissioner
meetings, and any ordinance or
resolution that will be considered
or any item up for discussion,
Kasko said. Ill propose that we
send it to the local print and on-
line media sites and post it on the
borough website.
For a Tuesday night commis-
sioner meeting, the agenda would
have to be posted the Friday be-
fore the meeting date under this
proposal.
Borough Clerk Deanna Bennett
is in charge of posting agendas
online. She was not in attendance
at the Thursday, June 14 meeting.
The agenda for the meeting was
still not posted on the website as
of Thursday, June 21.
After the meeting, Mayor Tish
Colombi defended the boroughs
practice of posting the agendas
online several hours prior to each
meeting.
There is no requirement from
the state about when anything
needs to be posted. There is no re-
quirement at all. The agendas for
the meetings change sometimes
right until we come in at 7 p.m.
for the small work session. If
something new comes in or is
deleted, it needs to be changed be-
fore the meeting, Colombi said.
Sometimes if Deanna feels that
theyre accurate shell put them
on our website that day. Jeff said
they should be up Friday, but
theres no way that can be done.
Theres too much stuff going on
and changing for the meeting, so
the agenda it would be in flux.
At the meeting, Kasko said that
the Haddonfield Turf Committee
didnt provide him with any in-
formation or project documenta-
tion about the proposed turf field
prior to the May 22 meeting. He
said he was handed a piece of
paper 10 minutes before the
meeting on May 22.
Commissioner Ed Borden dis-
agreed and said Kasko had met
prior to the meeting with the turf
chairman Joe Del Duca and he
didnt raise any complaints about
the project.
Kasko confirmed that he met
with Del Duca but said that no
project reports, environmental re-
ports, or official documentation
was provided to him or made
available to the public at the May
22 turf meeting.
I told him it sounded good. I
wasnt given any paper; I was ex-
pecting that all of this would be
made available for members of
the public, Kasko said at the
meeting.
Kasko went on and said this
issue is about the public having
information at their disposal.
Colombi defended the bor-
oughs dissemination of informa-
tion to the public and said this is
one of the most open govern-
ments Ive ever experienced.
We are not doing a poor job. I
think we are doing everything
that is asked of us and more.
Some of the obligation falls on
you (the public) to keep up with
the work and information,
Colombi said.

story on the event.
The Haddonfield Police Depart-
ment took the necessary precau-
tions and closed off the public
park around Hopkins Pond for
the next two weeks. The en-
trances to the park were roped off
with yellow caution tape and resi-
dents were warned to stay away
from the pond after the sighting.
The park wasnt reopened until
May 25, 2007.
Other than the initial sighting,
the alligator or whatever the
heck it was wasnt seen again.
You know what it reminds me
of ? The Loch Ness Monster. They
show that same picture weve all
seen our whole life with just
the head sticking out, Colombi
said.
The mayor actually wasnt
even in town when the incident
happened. She said she was on va-
cation at the Jersey Shore and
didnt know about the supposed
sighting until she saw the front
page of The Haddonfield Sun
when she returned.
There arent exactly many pro-
tocols for the mayor in a situation
when an alligator might be on the
loose and in a pond, so Colombi
said she let the police department
handle the situation.
And what if there really had
been an alligator terrorizing the
pond?
The police would have loved
it, they would have pulled out the
SWAT team, Colombi said.
Police Chief John Banning
said he remembered the call com-
ing in, but there really wasnt
much the local department could
down. A captain at the time of the
incident, Banning said the de-
partment could only monitor the
pond and inform the county
parks department about the sup-
posed incident.
But he said he hasnt given the
incident much thought since.
It was a funny, interesting
story that people like to hear
about, but we really didnt have a
whole lot of involvement. You
wonder about the credibility. Did
somebody think it was a turtle, or
some other reptile that they mis-
took for an alligator? he said.
We never found anything, so we
took it as unfounded.
This reporter has seen enough
horror movies to know that the
alligator is most likely waiting,
lurking, in the depths of Hopkins
Pond.
Better think twice before going
for your daily dip in the local
water source.

in our opinion
T
he good news: New Jersey ac-
counted for 25 percent of all
new jobs created in the United
States in the month of May: 17,500 new
jobs were created.
The bad news: the states unemploy-
ment rate rose from 9.1 to 9.2 percent.
And lets be mindful: the 9.2 percent
figure really isnt an accurate unem-
ployment percentage at all.
There are countless people whose
unemployment benefits have run out,
and whose cases no longer count in de-
partment of labor statistics.
And there are others who may have
lost a job, who were ineligible for
unemployment benefits, and, again,
whose cases are not factored into the
state unemployment rate.
And so as encouraging as it is to
hear our state created the most new
jobs in the country, the overall known
unemployment numbers are still ex-
tremely alarming.
Gov. Christie says the new jobs re-
port means consumers are becoming
more confident.
The overall figures paint a complete-
ly different picture.
Were many years into this econom-
ic mess. And were still struggling as a
state, despite the so-called comeback.
While the governors 10 percent
across-the-board income-tax cut would
certainly help some, it certainly wont
help the middle class all that much.
A person making an annual salary
of $35,000 would see a whopping $1 a
week increase in take-home pay.
This is hardly enough to spark con-
sumer confidence.
Much more still needs to be done at
the federal and state levels to inspire
confidence. Realistically, the unem-
ployment percentage needs to drop to
close to 8 percent before theres any
reason for anyone to celebrate.
And even then, the numbers will
still be too high.
We look forward to the day we can
agree consumer confidence is back.
Were just not sure that time is here
yet.
States uptick in unemployment
Number rises despite creation of 17,500 new jobs; more must be done
How confident are you?
Gov. Christie says he believes con-
sumers in New Jersey are gaining
confidence. Yet the unemployment
rate jumped in May. How confident in
the economy are you? We want to
know.
Will Brandywines plan be held
to same building standards?
On May 23, I was one of many people
who attended the Historic Preservation
Commission (HPC) meeting to voice our
objections to the planned Brandywine ex-
pansion of their assisted living facility at
132 Warwick Road. At that meeting both
residents and a merchant of Haddonfields
historic district presented plans for addi-
tions to homes and signage for a storefront.
The HPC posed detailed questions regard-
ing the building materials to be used and
the number of words to appear on the sign.
In fact, a discussion regarding whether
to use vinyl or wood windows took up sev-
eral minutes. Such is the level of detailed
attention paid by the HPC in attempting to
fulfill their mission of preserving the char-
acter and integrity of our historic dis-
tricts buildings and streetscapes. Follow-
ing the Brandywine discussion, the HPC
voted to reject the application of Brandy-
wines planned expansion, which would
significantly increase the facilitys size, as
well as add an underground parking
garage with fewer spaces than what is re-
quired. Why? Because the plan would fur-
ther exacerbate the non-conformance of a
commercial property in a residential com-
munity in the historic district which is
inconsistent with the very mission of the
HPC.
When the Planning Board meets on July
9, will the standards established to main-
tain our historic district be honored and
drive a responsible decision to also reject
Brandywines plan? If not, we need to seri-
ously question why some residents and
businesses are held to the letter and intent
of the HPC guidelines, while others are
not.

Beer tasting a huge success
for Indian King Tavern
On May 5, for the first time in 139 years,
beer was served at the Indian King Tavern
in Haddonfield. Or, to be more exact, the
Friends of the Indian King Tavern staged a
fundraising beer-tasting event. The event
was a huge success, thanks to the dedicat-
ed work of many volunteers, suppliers,
governments and others.
We particularly want to thank our spon-
sors and suppliers the Pour House, Yards
Brewery and the British Chip Shop. Spe-
cial thanks to Terrie Murphy, Christopher
Thomas and Bill Brown who led the effort
and made sure everything came together.
Thanks also to so many others who helped
out in so many ways. We also thank the
Borough of Haddonfield and our three
commissioners, Mayor Tish Colombi, Ed
Borden and Jeff Kasko who officially start-
ed our event by tapping the kegs to start
the beer flowing.
The Friends of the Indian King supports
the state's parks department in interpret-
ing the Revolutionary War era Indian King
and helping to keep it open to the public.
We also are working to bring back a part of
the tavern that has been lost to history
the ark that was built in 1760 but torn down
at the beginning of the 20th century.
The beer-tasting event brought more
than 270 visitors to the tavern grounds,
many for their first time at the Indian
King. Many visitors have compared the In-
dian King experience to a small version of
Williamsburg but unlike Williamsburg,
which is just a reconstruction, the Indian
King is the real thing the original build-
ing where history occurred.
The day was a great success in raising
funds, in introducing new visitors to the
Indian King, and for showing the potential
of this grand old building. Thank you to
everyone who participated and con-
tributed. Who knows, maybe this idea of
having beer at a tavern will catch on!

I was drafted more for my pro-
jected ability, Walter said with a
chuckle, in regard to his 2-8
record.
Since June 6, Walter has trav-
eled cross-country twice on a
whirlwind of airplanes, has had
countless blood tests and partici-
pated in pitching drills for the
past two weeks. After signing at
his family home in Haddonfield,
Walter hopped on a plane and
flew to the Kansas City Royals
spring training facility in Sur-
prise, Ariz. Walter was subjected
to a bevy of medical tests and an
extensive physical before he was
allowed to take the field for a few
days in an extended spring train-
ing session for first-year draftees.
His first appearance against a
professional hitter? He plunked
the guy. Yep, right in the back.
I thought that was hilarious,
my first pitch I hit someone. But
after that I got the next hitter to
pop out, then struck a kid out,
and then gave up a hit up the mid-
dle but then got a hitter to
groundout to end the inning. It
was one inning, and in game
workout to get my work in, but it
was a rush, he said. Im getting
better. I definitely pitch around
the zone; it throws hitters off.
While most young pitchers
only have two or three pitches
they can throw for strikes and
usually have to develop a fourth
to be successful Walter said he
is comfortable throwing five dif-
ferent pitches in any situation of
a game. He throws a low to mid
90s fastball, a 12 to 6 curveball
think about the numbers on a
clock to envision the curveballs
path a two-seam fastball, a
changeup and a cutter.
For the next three months, Wal-
ter will be in a low Single A
league in North Carolina, spend-
ing his days playing baseball with
other draftees and living in a
hotel while he works toward his
dream.
Hopefully after this season
ends hell be called up to an in-
structional league and then per-
haps an AA League team next
year.
Im just really excited to be
here and very proud for everyone
who supported me, he said. You
have to take it day by day, you
cant jump too far at a time. I
want to get called up as soon as
possible though.

Thanks to everyone who
made picnic a success
This past June 3 was the annu-
al Ashland Church Community
Picnic, and what a great event it
was. The desire was to put on a
church wide event that would
also serve the broader communi-
ty in which we live, whether or
not they would call Ashland
Church their home. And that is
just what happened.
The day of the picnic offered
beautiful weather, good food (and
lots of it) and plenty of fun activi-
ties for all ages. The kids really
enjoyed the two human hamster
balls and the foam pit, as well as
the rest of the games offered by
the Games 2 You people. We
also witnessed dozens of happy
and wet kids on the slip-n-slide.
Combined together, the kids went
home washed, rinsed and tumble
dried from going to the slide, the
foam and then into the hamster
balls!
Entertainment aside, the reali-
ty that communities came togeth-
er was a beautiful thing. Across
the church yard people were able
to make new acquaintances, re-
connect with old friends, and just
having a laid back, enjoyable af-
ternoon to relax and play. Even
after the alleged incoming storm
lead to the picnic to be called an
hour early, a few dozen people
stayed to brave the weather only
to find more beautiful sun and
some good volleyball games to
carry the event on way into the af-
ternoon.
I would like to say a big thank
you to all those who prepared or
donated food, time and expertise
towards making the picnic a suc-
cess! Also, a big thanks to every-
one who came! It would not have
been as good of a time without
you, and if Ashland Church is not
your home community of wor-
ship, thank you for coming and
know that you were appreciated
and are always welcome to join us
in the future in any of our events,
programs or worship. You can al-
ways find out what is going on at
www.ashlandchurch.org.

Shrinking unions struggle
to gain, maintain power
River City, Haddonfield, is a mi-
crocosm of the national scene.
Shrinking unions are struggling
to gain and maintain power over
our governing bodies, for exam-
ple, Wisconsin, Ohio, and New
Jersey. Where unions have gained
control over voters and legisla-
tors, taxes have always gone up.
People power disappears; public
employee roles get bigger, along
with their generous salaries and
inflated retirements that are not
payable.
Well-meaning wealthy citizen
groups are like unions that want
to coerce legislators into commit-
ting your tax money to their pet
projects and have you continue to
pay for the projects long after
their foot is out of the doorway.
The struggling economy doesn't
matter to Washington, D.C., and
two of our three commissioners.
Folks shouldn't be so ready to
agree without checking the cash
box to pay for it.
Stay tuned folks, this battle
isnt over yet, and your influence
counts. The difference being suc-
cessful or not, is not strength or
knowledge, but rather a lack of
will.

sity letter winner, won the Na-
tional Greco-Roman wrestling
title at 46 kilos, defeating a Min-
nesota wrestler 4-1 and 1-0. He
will now go on to represent the
United States in the FILA Cadet
World Championships held Aug.
21-27 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Boychuck will train for the
event in Colorado Springs and
will be coached by the U.S. Na-
tional Team coach Ike Anderson.
Boychuck (106 pounds) con-
cluded the 2012 wrestling season
with state prep championships,
earning second place honors. He
received All-American honors at
the national tournament.
Boychuck helped the Blue
Knights achieve a national team
ranking of 10th place this year ac-
cording to WIN magazine, and
was part of the teams sixth Penn-
sylvania State Prep Team Cham-
pionship and a second-place fin-
ish at the National Prep Champi-
onship in 2012, according to Scott
Green, head wrestling coach.
