A Reaction Paper

In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements in the Course E 609 Seminar: Management of Educational Institutions/Systems

Introduction: Internet, Mc Donalds in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Spanish telenovela in the Philippines, English speaking Japanese, Filipino workers around the globe these are just some of the many examples of how globalization becomes an inevitable trend in every country. Globalization has been one of the greatest challenges that every country in the world is facing nowadays, primarily because it was seen as one of the main ingredient in every countries development and prosperity. Although, globalization as a concept is very ancient, however, its application and schema had been since time in memorial. Even from the time of early people trading and exchanging goods and trades, the concept of globalization is already present, it was only in 1960s when the term was formalize. And through its formalization, the challenge of reducing and removing of barriers between national borders in order to facilitate the flow of goods, capital, services and labor was more realized. Globalization is a challenge. It entails change that somehow will alter the routine, culture and tradition. Globalization made realized that every nation is part of a whole and there will be a vis--vis effect if one will not change and embrace globalization. It is challenge that we should respond to in order for a country to cope and survive in the international market, one should be able to innovate and create marketable products and quality services. However, despite the positive impacts of globalization , there are also negative effects and disadvantages that was drawn.

On the other hand, education was defined as the best vehicle for change; and therefore among all factors present in the society, education was the most influential. In this paper, the writer aims to identify the positive and negative effects of globalization and moreover, its implication and impact on education. Positive Effects of Globalization Globalization in a greater sense is positive and challenging. As enumerated in buzz.com, globalization was emphasized as the destruction of boundaries among countries that permits free trade, open competition, venue for employment locally and internationally. Through globalization, we are able to be socially aware, social mature and critical. We are being able to understand and take part in each other culture, and most of all technology is being available in across nations. Through globalization, we are realized that we are one. Globalizations primarily aims to unite each country. These are but some examples of the effects of globalization. Negative Effects of Globalization In Isaacs 3rd Law of Motion he states that in every motion, there is an equal and opposite reaction and this also applies in globalization. If there are positive effects, there also negative and disadvantages. In terms of economy, surprisingly, globalization instead produces monopoly rather that free trade. Instead of improving lives, globalization produces poorer working condition. In other words, developed and rich countries become richer while developing countries cater the dirty part of servicing for the developed ones. While the rich are getting richer, the poor are struggling for a square meal. If the current Occupy Wall Street protests are a reminder

of how angry people are with the current set-up, then those who govern us should take notice, and work towards alleviating poverty. Ideally, globalization should have resulted in creation of wealth and prosperity, but corporate greed and corrupt government has ensured that money is not distributed equally. Globalization enables free and open trade, yes, especially taking into consideration smuggled goods and illegal drugs. Globalization may have inadvertently helped terrorists and criminals. At the heart of globalization is an idea that humans, materials, food etc. be allowed to travel freely across borders, but 9/11 was a ghastly reminder that people with evil intentions can use it as an opportunity and cause damage. Because of Globalization, developing countries suffered brain drain due to exits of nationalities for greener pasture. Environmental degradation is an issue which has been debated ferociously in various international meetings, and it has to be accepted that globalization is one of the most important factors that has aggravated the situation. The amount of raw materials needed to run industries and factories is taking a toll on the natural reserves of planet earth, and pollution has severely impacted the quality of air that we need so very much for our survival. Globalization degrades health and nutrition, due to the fast moving trade, people tend to embrace instant instant noodles, instant coffee. Fast food chains like McDonalds and KFC are spreading fast in the developing world. People are consuming more junk food which has an adverse impact on their health. Apart from the health concerns, there is something else that globalization has been criticized for, and it is the accusation that it

has opened floodgates for restaurants and eateries which are insensitive to the religious beliefs of the host nation. Globalization and Education Education is the best vehicle for change. Globalization is a great change that we should respond to. Education is a very influential tool in spreading the aims and principles of education. In fact, in the Philippines, in roder to cope with the need to be globally recognized, in SY 2012-2013, the K12 curriculum will be piloted, hoping that through this, more and more Filipino will be able to compete in the international arena of employment and trade. In order to make education a vehicle of globalization the following are necessary: restructuring of the contents, duration, quality and standards of educational offerings in line with the broad frame of higher educational systems. This is the very reason why most of the counties now are having alliance and memorandums, treaties with other nation in order to be allowed to benchmark and have exchange of strengths and weaknesses. On the other hand, due to these changes and expectations, education has been difficulties in being consistent to what globalization requires, because of the fast changing challenge of globalization, it seems that the value of education is being taken for granted. Nations must create and sustain a highly educated and innovative workforce and the capacity to generate and apply new knowledge, supported through policies and investments in developing human capital, technological innovation and entrepreneurial skills.

Education must be well crafted in order to be useful for the need of the students to respond to the challenge of globalization. Philippine Education and Globalization Our country is one of those that pursue to respond to globalization. In different aspects of our nation to name a few the country had high levels of education and English literacy due to the influence of Uncle Sam, decent savings rates, and an exportoriented agricultural sector that generated more than sufficient foreign exchange. The industrial sector was growing rapidly and the country had one of the highest per capita incomes in Southeast Asia. As a result, the Philippine state has failed to create the kind of organized socioeconomic environment that would have prepared the country for global competition. There are many things that globalization that brought quick changes into the Philippine society. With its vast development it has brought about technologies mostly computers and software and also telecom companies are being introduced into the market. However, along the way, it can be observed that due to the demands of change, we often times accept change even without monitoring and evaluating the factors that goes within our system. In the our country, we do not have strong political will to pursue what is right rather than what is effective for the moment. An I guess this should rather be address first before going with the heap of globalization. There are many countries that had difficulties in creating gateways in the international economy and tracing these countries history you can be able to realize that

initially, they were able to strengthen their localities before moving forward. In this point we should realize the Japanese concept of GLOCALIZATION. We Filipinos has less appreciation and value for our own product and country and this we should empower.
